Prairie Hearts #5

Whispers on the Wind

Rate this book
A straitlaced bookseller and a rowdy trail guide fight their ill-suited attraction in Book Five of the Prairie Hearts series by USA Today bestselling author Caroline Fyffe.

Wyoming Territory, October 1883

Tabitha Canterbury came to Logan Meadows with one to open the bookshop she’s always dreamed of having. In a town full of illiterate cowboys, though, making the Storybook Lodge a success is easier said than done. And things get more complicated when the saloon next door gets a new co-owner and Tabitha finds herself falling for the wrong sort of man…

After a lifetime guiding settlers across the prairie, Hunter Wade isn’t looking to stay put in Logan Meadows. But as a partner in the Bright Nugget saloon, he’s determined to turn a profit—and if that puts him in competition with Miss Hoity-Toity Canterbury, that’s fine. Even if she is beautiful, and clever, and always ready with a witty retort.

Can these two stubborn souls come together—or will pride keep them apart?

I really liked the hero, but I didn't like the heroine at all. If I had been the hero, I would have turned and run as far away as I could. The rest of the story is good. Happy reading!

Oh, this was the best western romance by one of my favorite authors. MS Fyffe has gold here and I loved it every minute. It was funny, tender, and absolutely wonderful read. You have a woman who is called a spinster by the towns' citizens. Her name is Tabitha Canterbury who left her home in the East to open her own bookstore. She wants to be independent and rely on her own smarts who sees Wyoming as a place to settle down. She sees nothing wrong with the plans she has made and new friends along the way. Tabitha is a person who knows that she will never marry and have a family on her own and does the best she can. But then an unlikely hero will come into her world and turn her life upside down.
Hunter Wade has been his man for a long time. He has done a lot of things in his life, now in Wyoming he gets a chance to be something different. He's no green lad, but an older man of forty who looks for the opportunity to run a saloon and make money. Wade is one handsome and strong type of person who meets the spunky Tabitha. He knows that this bossy woman makes him so aggravated he wants to shake her up. Wade doesn't know if he wants to spank her or kiss her. The sparks fly between these two with a battle of wills. Love will be the most thrilling of all!
I just adore this book because of the talents of the author and seeing previous people from the earlier books. You must read this to find out if Wade and Tabby get their happy ever after.
Thank you Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review

Caroline Fyffe's Prairie Wind Series, is truly a fun and enjoyable series. Although I felt the 5th book in this series wasn't as fast paced and dramatic as the previous four books, I did enjoy it. Can't wait to read the final book to see what happens with everyone in Logan Meadows. One thing I truly love about this series, she has kept everyone from all the books still active in each new installment.

TRUTH AND LIES

I'm approaching the end of this series and don't like it!
In this book, we get to know Tabitha, who has been mentioned in previous books, but we never really saw her much until now. This is her story.
We also see more struggles with Jake and his mother. Jake is still working on Chase Logan's ranch after coming farther west with them, and he's been unofficially adopted into their family, but he still doesn't know much about his real father. His mother has always refused to tell him, even, apparently, saying at one point that she didn't know. But Jake has never had a good relationship with his mother, so he's not surprised that she's lied to him...again. What he is surprised about is the news she brings with her.
Tabitha comes west to start her own business. Her parents are wealthy and, when she's not interested in marrying who they think she should, but she'd rather use her dowry to open her own bookstore, her parents put her money in trust, so she's on her own. Against all odds, she makes it in the town where Frank, the banker and her uncle, lives. She'd like to marry some day, but if that means giving up her independence, she'd rather keep her own business, even if being called the town spinster does hurt.
Hunter comes into town to collect a debt. Someone owed him money but couldn't pay, but the owner of the saloon in Logan Meadows borrowed money from him and never paid it all back, so the only way Hunter is going to get his money back is to go into partnership with a man who doesn't want a partner. To make matters more complicated, Tabitha's bookstore is just down the street from the saloon, and Tabitha is one of the business owners and town residents who think the saloon is too rowdy already. Hunter's ideas are just going to make it more so. Many of the residents seem to have something against him, but Hunter can't figure it out. They don't even know him.
In this story, we see how a few well-placed lies can destroy a person's reputation, then when you find out that person wasn't so bad after all, undoing the damage is a lot harder than creating the mess in the first place.
Hunter isn't looking for a family. He's not the settling-down sort of person. But there's something about Tabitha that attracts him, no matter how different they seem, and the more Tabitha sees of Hunter, the more she knows the things she's heard about him can't be true. But Tabitha has more than her fair share of meddling family members, and a relationship with Hunter doesn't stand a chance...or does it?
This book didn't have a a whole lot of action until towards the end, but it's a nice story, and by the end, you still find yourself rooting for Hunter and Tabitha and glad for the way things turned out.

It did not take much for me to fall not only in love with this book but its characters. Mrs. Fyffe knows how to create a story that captivates you not only by the plot but it’s wonderful scenes and heroic characters. I was sucked in from the start with a plot you think you have it all worked out until this author throws a few major twists in your way giving romance a whole new meaning. You will be cheering Tabitha and Hunter on as they butt heads over and over again as they worm their way deep into your heart. What you will find in this delightful story are bad guys, good guys, saloon, cowboys, saloon girls, friends, family some nice and some not so nice, lies, secrets, hard times, good times, a kidnapping, fights, gun fights, lovely name calling that will make you laugh and so much more as this author entertains you with her very talented writing.

I have read and listen to both the book and the audio I can’t make up my mind which is best. The book you get your own feeling of it but the audio really comes alive. I totally enjoyed both but I will let you decide.

I loved John Glouchevitch as the narrator he has a strong male voice and brings many wonderful different voices. He has the right pitch for time in history to make you believe he really is each character. I did not hear any background noises just a very rich audio that pulled me in. There are not any places where the audio what louder or lower at the beginning of chapters which usually means a break was taken. If any breaks were taken you could not tell. It was easy to hear each emotion that each character was feeling through his tones. You had to trouble knowing what each felt whether they were happy, sad or anger. His male voices were as nice as his female ones each given the right pitch as he takes you through each down fall or happy times. This is the first I have listened to this narrator, I am very much looking forward to letting me take me away to another place and time in the near future.

Tabitha is a woman after my own heart as she takes the bull by the horn going west to live her own life away from her controlling mother who has handpicked a man for her to marry. She isn’t happy with her pick and just wants to live her life reading and selling books. She finds what she is looking for in the wonderfully sweet town of Logan Meadows where her aunt and uncle live. She is happy that is as happy as a woman can be with no one to hold and love. She lives her life haves her business, family and wonderful friends around her. She is happy that is until one handsome stranger comes in town turning her world upside down making her mind of a husband and family.

Hunter does a job for a man who cannot pay him, in return the man gives him half of a saloon the kicker is his new partner doesn’t know about this and isn’t too happy when he finds out. Hunter is tired of moving around and wants to settle put some roots down the saloon is just what he needs. He takes one look at the beautiful Tabitha and wishes he could make her his own. Knowing this isn’t going to happen she is way above him he gets to know the town and the people, than he breaks the news to his new partner. Tempters rise and things get a little out of hand leaving Hunter with trying to make the best of it and dreaming about Tabitha.

One thing leads to another and before you know the author throws some twist on you that will leave you smiling and a few with your mouth hung open. I loved the humor along with the true meaning of friendship, family and love the author brings to this story. I really enjoyed the baiting back and forward between Tabitha and Hunter along with some other members of the town. It was a pleasure to get to see some of my old favorite characters and where they are in their life and what is new with them. There are some characters I came to like and then not like so much. Tabitha’s mother is something else but she will grow on you. I did have a few good laughs at her expense lol. I dearly loved Violet I would have loved to have been part of her family, she is a witty old women whose heart is as big at the moon. She gives so much but she doesn’t take much crap. You want to stay on this woman good side for sure. The way Tabitha and Hunters romance plays out is so delightful and refreshing. You are in for such a treat watching these two fight their attraction as they get into disagreements, and the mess they make they are having a hard time keeping their hands off each other. Jealousy can be a bad thing and I truly think Tabitha’s aunt really loves her but is jealous of her. There is nothing worse than family sticking their nose in your life telling you what to do when you are 29 and fully able to run your own life. I love small towns where everyone knows everyone, they help each other giving so much back to the town and its people. The romance build up is slow and steady with a few twists. This is a story you will forget you are reading as it takes over your mind pulling you in taking you away giving you smiles after smiles along with a few heart breaks. It was a book I could not put down I had to know how each twist would play out. Things are still up in the air with Jake, Daisy and his mother but that is another story I can’t wait to read.

This is Mrs. Fyffe at her finest giving you a highly exciting entertaining read. If you haven’t read any of her books you should give this one a try. I highly recommend any of her books or audios they are truly wonderful, humorous, exciting, thrilling, with a little danger and along with a lot of love she gives each one.

Whispers on the Wind (A Prairie Hearts Novel Book 5) by Caroline Fyffe, but can be read as a stand alone. However, because it is such a wonderful series, I'd suggest reading them all! Another thoroughly satisfying Historical Western Romance! I simply adore the "A Prairie Hearts Novel", series!

In "Whispers on the Wind", readers find themelves, once again, in Logan Meadows, Wyoming Territory, in 1883 with a rowdy trail guide/wagon master, Hunter Wade, a strait-laced, smart mouthed bookseller, Tabitha Canterbury, and some interesting sparks flying.
Hunter, is a drifter, looking to set roots and settle down, he is co-owner of the Bright Nugget saloon, which is next door to where else, Miss Canterbury's bookstore. Sparks fly!
With trouble on the horizon, danger lurking, a hasty marriage, misunderstandings, healing, forgiveness, will Hunter and Tabitha be able to find their HEA, or lose all to the threat at hand, horrible, and thoughtless misunderstandings?

Well written with well-developed and captivating characters. The storyline is steady paced, with many twists and turns, a true Western Historical Romance, from beginning to the last page. Readers will find themselves caught up the the lives of the people of Logan Meadows, especially Tabitha and Hunter. What amazing and dare I say, entertaining characters! Readers can't help but feel their angst, and their love blossoming.
Ms. Fyffe has written an incredible tale of love, with a bit of suspense, throw in a bit of mystery and lots of sparks, and you have a very entertaining, captivating and seductive tale.
Once again, Ms. Fyffe shows her talent in mesmerizing storytelling, her well-developed characters and her knowledge of the Wyoming Territory in the 1880's. Fantastic read! I would strongly recommend picking up your copy today, set back and be throughly entertained.
A sweet, charming and well thought out story! Another must read from Carolyn Fyffe! I can't wait to see what awaits her readers next!

Once again Caroline Fyffe has created a story that was just captivating. A hero that I absolutely fell in love with, and a heroine that I was completely rooting for from the first pages.

Tabitha is her own woman. Leaving all she ever knew, she headed west with nothing but her dreams of owning her own bookstore. And she founds those dreams in Logan Meadows. Known as the town spinster at the age of almost 29, she has her home and her business, not to mention countless friends to make her happy. Life is good. And then Hunter rode into town.

Hunter has always been a sort of drifter. Being a wagon master has given him opportunities to see the country. But never set down roots. And with his half ownership into the Bright Nugget saloon that is exactly what he will have. Can be adapt to having a place to call home? When he meets Tabitha he is instantly drawn to her. Her confidence and beauty alone are more that enough, but he senses in her more. A strength even she must not realize. And therein lies the danger to his heart. She is well above him and he knows it. There's nothing he could ever offer her to make her see him as anything else as the saloon owner and a thorn in her side.

Through many disagreements about the saloon they are drawn together and the attraction between them grows. And when a speedy wedding and a murderous threat come to town, maybe they will see their own hearts. Will misunderstanding and thoughtless words keep them apart or will they realize they are perfect for one another?
Another perfect and mesmerizing story and I can't wait for more!!

Logan Meadows, Wyoming Territory, October 1883 is the setting for this novel. Tabitha Canterbury is a 28-year independent business owner of the Storybook Lodge who is determined to make it on her own. Hunter Wade is a 40-year wagon master now half saloon owner wandering into town to collect on debt. They are both drawn toward each other but at the same time totally put off because of their strong opinions & current business interests. As the two skirt around getting to know one another the ques from one another make it hard to believe they will ever be friends at all. When Hunter makes a decision to bring an act to town to drum up revenue for the saloon, it may be the breaking point of the strained friendship. As Tabitha finds a voices to support the new entertainment in town & her mother arrives to haul her back to New York where she belongs. Tabitha makes a declaration about herself & Hunter that will forever change their lives & she hopes he will play along.

In this opposites attracts loves story, everything is old west proper. It is a good story, well written & the characters are well developed. I did however miss what happened to one of the young men in the book, Jake but believe it maybe because he will be the topic of another book in this series. This book is appropriate for all ages. I would recommend it to anyone wanted to read a darling love story with happy ending.

I received a FREE copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having read several of the books in this series I was excited for a chance to catch up with the folks in Logans Meadow and meet a few new additions to the town. From an early age, Tabitha has always wanted to open a bookstore. In order to do so however, she has left her hometown to get the needed independence from her parents. Determined to make a success of her store, Tabitha is convinced that she will remain a spinster but she will have her bookstore! But seeing all of her friends settle down is making the idea of spinsterhood less appealing especially when Hunter arrives in town. However, family members think that Hunter is too far beneath her, since rumor has it he is a gunman and if that's not enough he owns a saloon! This historical romance features a marriage of convenience that slowly leads to the main characters revealing their true feelings.
Interspersed in Hunter and Tabitha's story we get an opportunity to catch up with all of the other couples from previous books and also set the stage for future stories. I imagine Jake will be the next to get a story and I eagerly await that one. And hopefully we'll even find out just why Jake's mother never revealed Jake's parentage. If you haven't read the earlier books in this series, I definitely recommend reading the books in order to really appreciate the series.

Delightful tale of opposites attract. The charming town of Logan Meadows comes to life once again in this latest Prairie Hearts novel. I have grown to love the characters in this town through the earlier books in this series. It is so fun to get another peek into their lives as I grow to know and love new characters who have joined the community. Tabitha and Hunter have both found a special place in my heart. They are both fiercely independent but also lonely. They have reached a point in their lives where they want companionship but don't know how to reach out to each other. Misunderstandings and rumors threaten to keep them apart. The twists and turns that finally brought them together kept me laughing and on the edge of my seat. Someday I would like to go back and reread this whole series one right after another so I can remember the details about each character. In the meantime these books stand alone just fine. You don't have to start at the beginning of the series if you have not read the previous books. As always I look forward to the next story in this series!

Whispers on the Wind is the fifth book in the series. While it can be read as a stand alone title, I highly recommend that you read the series from the beginning. That way you can experience the true beauty of Logan Meadows and it's inhabitants. With each book we are introduced to new characters and get to revisit the ones we lost our hearts to in previous volumes. Caroline has a way of painting beautiful pictures with her words so it is impossible not to become emotionally invested in her characters' lives.

I laughed and I cried and I felt my blood boil as I read this story. I was rooting for my favorites and shaking my head when some reverted back to their old ways. As always, from the very first page, I was on a roller coaster of emotions.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series because I have so many questions that I am hoping will get answered.

Not as good as previous books in series

Hunter is an ex wagon train boss who has repossession of half of the saloon in payment of a debt owed to him. Tabitha owns the book store next to the saloon. They are as different as chalk and cheese, but there is a growing attraction which they both fight.
I didn't enjoy this story as much as the previous books in the series as I felt there was too little real interaction between the two main characters. Instead there were lots of inner thoughts which became repetetive. I think involving too many secondary characters detracts from the story, but is used only for padding.

A Rare Enduring Romance!

I absolutely loved this part of the Prairie Hearts series, 'Whispers on the Wind'. It was an enduring romance that lingered in my heart and mind for a while after reading this book.

This wasn't just romantic, but it showed a time in our land where prejudicial situations happened on EVERY level. Yes, if you were a different race back in those days you were looked upon as being able to sell, but the more I read I also realized that woman were looked upon as no longer able to marry if passed a very young age. That was a true prejudice. As well as a man who wasn't the exact look for ladies, who didn't ware the right clothing, who visited salons, was looked upon as being the wrong kind to marry for a woman.

So like I said, the true romance was there, but the unsaid words about each other are such a disaster if each other doesn't speak the truth.

I loved it, I'm sorry if my review doesn't say a lot...I don't like giving spoilers, but I truly recommend this beautiful story for everyone...

WHISPERS ON THE WIND -- ADVENTURE, ROMANCE AND LIFE AS IT WAS IN WYOMING OF TH 1870'S

This was my first Caroline Fyffe novel, and it certainly won't be my last. I felt right at home in Logan Meadows, Wyoming, with it's warm and lovable inhabitants. The heroine, Tabatha, a strong an independent woman for that time, refused to give in to all the attempts to have her give up her dream of a book store. When she meets the hero, Hunter, orphaned and raised by a wagon train master, he is a strong and handsome loner who has become a drifter, who finds a new home in Logan Meadows. Theirs is a sweet and tender love story. The book addresses the problems of the 1870's that women had endure in their second class status, and the serious issue of prejudice toward immigrants who were different.

I loved this book about Hunter and Tabitha. Tabitha is a lady from back east and she owns a bookstore. She reads daily. Then into town comes a mountain man dressed in buckskins and fringe. He is wild and handsome.

Tabitha can't help but be attracted to him but he can't read or write and they have nothing in common. He is half owner of the saloon that is the bane of her existence. They have their problems then he brings in a young woman to sing in the saloon and she realizes that he is attracted to her.

Beautiful story

Some say all romances are alike. I don't agree. An author who seems to read minds, who shows good people in odd situations and tries to teach us true right from wrong without "preaching" is a gem.
People can change and grow. It is wise never to value people with only one narrow point of view. Many gems are difficult to recognize if you've only seen them cut and polished.

Uplifting ride to an earlier era

I’ve been listening to all the Prairie Hearts novels. While a good outcome is predictable, I found myself wanting to read to see how things would work out. There are a lot of modern concerns in this and others in the series, such as prejudice and racism, the value of family, what constitutes a family and others. I appreciate the writing for the authors insights and characters with integrity. Refreshing and satisfying.

Another good story by Caroline Fyffe about Tabitha, a bookstore owner, and Hunter, a dislocated/new saloon owner, are from two different worlds with an attraction to each other they are fighting. Even though Tabitha and Hunter are the main characters; Caroline Fyffe's storytelling continues the stories of previous characters in the series and has many side stories besides the main romance. It is very well developed and well written. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this/the series.

A great addition to series

I'm pretty much addicted to this series. Oh, my-- Hunter Wade is a hunk and a good man. Strong values and high work ethic. No wonder Tabitha can't get him out of her mind when she first sees him. Other favorite characters from prior books appear. And you'll learn more about Mrs. Hollyhock in this one. She is a hoot and a lady I'd like to know. What an enjoyable read.

This story was almost too good to put down. It's the story of the town book seller and a man who becomes partners in the bar, Hunter Wade. Hunter comes to town to collect a debt owed him by an investor. The local bartender is not happy he's there,

Tabitha is an educated woman who meets Hunter and is intrigued in him. She finds that he has some ideas to gather more income for the bar. She doesn't like having the bar next door but she must say his ideas are good,

Carolyn Fyffe writes such beautiful stories. This is one of my favorites. I love that Tabitha and Hunter are older. His backstory is one I've never heard before. I feel like I live in this town because she makes all the characters seem real. God has given her a gift and she used it well!

She's done it again!

Just when you think something is about to happen it doesn't. Then everything is going along fine and bam. Talk about a page turner and somewhat of a cliffhanger! The ending begs for the next book in the series. Caroline is truly an excellent story teller and this is a great series you won't want to put down!

Nearing the end of this series of stories, we find it centered around Tabitha Canterbury, a splintering bookseller and a true cowboy hero, Hunter Wade, come to Logan Meadows to collect a debt owed to him. These two are as different as night and day but soon prove that opposites do attract. This series is a quick and easy read and leaves you wanting more.

Must read

I love the Logan Meadows books! I love the adventures. The characters from previous books are like old friends and we meet more in this book. Hunter and Tabby overcome many obstacles and cultural differences to become a great couple. I also love the way the Chinese immigrant issue developed.
