Jess is on the hunt for his next prey, Britt Hanlon, after leaving the newly named town of Williamstown, Texas, formerly known as Hades. He was about to give up on Hanlon and move on to the next man on his hunt list when he finally finds Hanlon and another wanted man in Wickerville, Texas.
Ed Treadwell, a wealthy man who owns the Gold Palace Saloon in Wickerville, offers him a job as his personal guard. Jess turns the offer down and friction begins between the two. Jess starts finding out that things aren’t quite the way they appear in Wickerville, but he has no proof of any wrongdoing. He starts asking questions and that leads him to the town of Sundown and George Rustenburg.
Rustenburg is a wealthy business owner in Sundown and when Jess visits the town, he finds out that one of the men on his hunt list, Watt Gainsforth, is working for Rustenburg as a guard at his gambling establishment. Jess kills Gainsforth and has to travel to the county sheriff’s office in Butterfield, Texas, because the marshal of Sundown refuses to pay the bounty on Gainsforth.
Jess is quickly making both Treadwell and Rustenburg nervous for some unknown reason that piques his interest even more. The more questions he asks and the more he delves into the business dealings of the two wealthy men, the more trouble he seems to find himself in.
As he rides back and forth between several towns, he seems to find trouble in every corner and he has the distinct feeling that all the while, someone is trailing him.

What can you not say about our boy, Jess Williams other than just a Bounty Hunter, U.S. Deputy Marshal lets add Detective and don't forget Philanthropist to all he feels needs help. Widows, with small children and without any financial help, very little food broken down housing but these women are strong and make what they have work. I love this author and his series, the plots all have a western theme, but the characters are like a bowl of jelly beans, different colors, but they are independent of each other. Great stories of the West and the many psychopaths Jess Williams hunts and they all get a free dirt blankets.
Jess Williams is a kind and just man. He kills Bad people but he takes care of widows and people who have been victimize. A true hero of the old west. Great series.
What happened to the bad guys daughter. That thought her dad was a good guy. Those guys though they had it made. No one could tough them. Shows you what can happen. JD
I have read all 50 books in this series and they just keep getting better. Jess Williams is a superb bounty hunter who dispenses justice his way. A no nonsense man who has all the tools required to hunt and bring to justice the most evil of men. Ten toes up is the only way Jess knows to ensure that the most vile of men will no longer practice their dastardly crimes. All you cowboy fans will thoroughly enjoy this series. Start with Volume 1. So, "Giddy Up."
Thomas just seems to be getting better. I've read all of the Jess Williams series and they are getting better. This one is more reminiscent of the first ones. Jess gets the bad guys and helps the widows. He even manages to kill the only prisoner he ever brought in alive.
As always I have enjoyed a Jess Williams novel. The books are a nice combination of action, humor, warm heartfelt good tidings for the innocent, but most of all good old fashioned cowboy heroics. Mr. Thomas, well done !!!
Jess has another repeat mission. He and Marshal Reedy uncover evidence of a robbery a couple of years ago. The men responsible have control of of two neighboring towns and need to be stopped.
I have read all fifty of these books. I really love them. I love the way Jess always gets his man and helps other people as well. I really look forward to the next one.
This was a typical Thomas book---Great. I have read them all and they all have the same basic theme but with the Thomas touch to make each one different.
I have read all of Jess's books and some of them twice. With that many books in a series you have to refresh your memory once in a while. Keep'em coming!!!!
