Rate this book
The Complex Book Series.
A Lone Planet. One Complex.
Unlimited Chaos.

The small population of Incubi in the Complex is clinging to old traditions and shunning contact with other species. Each year, the Incubi fight for the privilege to lead and mate. Only one can win. Kearn Layk never planned on winning, only doing better than last year’s previous dismal result that left him at the bottom of the pack. A year’s worth of secretly training more than paid off. He shocks everyone and wins. In the process, he makes an enemy of the man who was leader. Now filled with the burning desire to find a mate, he goes in search of a woman.
Phoebe Evans came to the Complex to reinvent herself. Being surrounded by the Metas is as strange as it is fascinating, but she hasn’t had the courage to date one yet. Then she meets Kearn. He’s smart and interesting and most definitely not Human.
Incubi traditions and Humans desires clash, and as new ideas are tested, old enemies rise up and threaten lives. Not everyone wants to see the Complex succeed.

Not romance, just off putting

This was just all around strange. I've been reading several of of the stories about The Complex, some good, several just bad, but this one falls in at weird and uncomfortable. It was ok, but the romance, if you can call it that, is the H/h barely knowing each other and then "I love you". Not like true mates though as in so many shifter type romances, but literally after a handful of times being in each other's company and having sex once when he impregnates her with a parasite incubi, they love each other. Which would be ok I guess if 1. She wasn't "pregnant" with his parasitic clone (basically) 2. He wasn't an incubus with more of a hive mentality (must have a minimum of 10 incubi living together or they go mad and die) 3. They could have sex more than ONCE a year and ONLY if he wins the"leader of the incubi tribe fights" that are held once a year 4. The premise that incubi are basically sexless with the exception of the ONE incubus that wins the annual fighting, and even then, that one is only sexual for 24 hours after winning.

I mean, 2 stars cuz I finished it, although I'm somewhat sorry I did, especially since the h has sex with three other "metas" ( supernatural beings) in the 4-6 weeks after having the one time sex with the H and 2. From there on out the H gives her handy jobs which is sorta glossed over with a "at least it's not my own hand" type of sentence.

Maybe if this was STRICTLY sci-fi, (even though the H is called an incubi, he is an alien) with a different name given to what he was, and maybe once he got sexual organs he got to keep instead of a couple inch stub ( 😝) he has if he doesn't win the leader fight, and maybe there wasn't a weird hive mentality (we must be together, we thrive on touch, we need others of our own incubi kind) this could have worked. I don't know. The whole thing was disturbing to me, probs cuz of the cognitive dissonance of expecting a romance and getting a poorly done science fiction clone impregnation story instead.

This book... Sigh. What to say about it...
Aside from a political subplot which was quite interesting, it was a story about true love and forming a friendship that goes along with it. And that captivating writing style sucked me into this universe right from the beginning and spat me out all chewed up at the end when it was done with me.
A few times, I felt so sorry for Incubi and their strange traditions, especially their "curse" . But this curse was the main reason, why the relationship between main characters appeared to be so pure and sweet and, for a little time, so incredibly hot.

If your looking for a lotta sex... Nope even though this book is about an Incubus. This guy is not like any other you've read about. He only gets to do the dirty once a year and that's for procreation only aaaaaaaand he only gets to do that if he wins a battle of his whole tribe for leadership. Whew. Yeah that was a lot to wrap my head around and then the relationship with Phoebe. Ok just strange. Can't say I hated this book but... uhm I just dunno too odd.

2 stars (because I kinda liked the plot)

I didn't liked it. First the plot seemed interesting, but the characters were boring and in the end I found it very unbelievable that they fell in love. No passion or romance going on, but yeah, they had sex and there is another parasite... I mean baby.

For me it was just NO.
