Called Up
There's one thing Max "Deke" Deacon can always count on besides his old high school teammates: Angelica "Fitz" Hawkins. Having enjoyed the first book in Jen Doyle's Calling It series, reading Called Up was really a no brainer; I love the best-friends-to-lovers and best-friend's-sister tropes, and the seed had already been sown nicely between Deke and Fitz.
"Two weeks ago he’d made her judge a burping contest in which extra points were given for substance and tone...How was she possibly finding him even close to attractive?"
This was a book of two halves for me. I found the first slower and a little cluttered with lots of characters mentioned, some needlessly, and the second tighter and paced much better. Fitz didn't have an easy time growing up and has put barriers up to protect herself, but one person has been there for her for the past sixteen years and when she notices her best-friend and the town's resident playboy looking at her rather differently, their relationship begins to shift.
What stole this for me was the emotion that Fitz's past brought and the relationship with her family--there were moments when my heart hurt for her. And I loved how hard Deke fell; he really is Fitz's rock but isn't overbearing with it, and together they have a wonderful chemistry which brings humour, banter, sweetness and passion.
"How is it that kissing you is better than sex with any other guy?"
Despite the slower start, this did develop into a sound addition to the series. Overall Jen Doyle has a writing style that works for me, she creates likeable characters and I'm looking forward to seeing who falls next.

Not as good as the first book, a little too much back and forth between the characters. It was mostly Fitz that was the cause of reading "whiplash". Deke was awesome...loved him. Enjoyed being back in Inspiration, Iowa and I'm really looking forward to Lola and Jack's book. Wondering how the author is going to pull their story off considering Jack's back story with Nate.

I read book 1, Calling It, in this companion series… wait no, let me be honest… I devoured book 1 in this series in about a day last week and as soon as I finished it I went on the hunt for book 2. Yes, that’s how much I loved it… and that’s how much anticipation I had for Called Up.
I had huge expectations.
Huge.
I’m here to tell you that all expectations were met and more!
Max Deacon is known around town as the fun guy… he’s not looking for a relationship, but if you’re down for some fun, then he’s your man. No strings and hot sex. And he’s been happy with the status quo, hooking up with ready and willing women, but suddenly he can’t seem to get his mind off someone who is completely off limits.
Angelica “Fitz” Hawkins is Nate’s half-sister. She’s never quite felt welcome in the small town she’s been forced to grow up in. After the unexpected death of her mom and dad, she’s struggled with the sidelong looks the people have given her as well as the less than warm welcome the friends of her half siblings have given her.
Deke and Fitz have become best friends over the years though, and along with that friendship, some additional feelings have risen to the surface. Though the fear of Nate’s wrath is strong, in the end it doesn’t deter them from acting on their attraction for each other. Now Fitz is looking to escape the judging eyes of the town and she finds she can’t confide this to Deke… and she won’t let her feelings for him sidetrack her plans either.
I don’t know what it is about Doyle’s guys… actually, I think I do. I think I love that they aren’t at all afraid to share their vulnerability and emotions. These very manly men are totally okay with laying it all on the line for the women they are falling for and that is so incredibly sexy to me. And the ladies she creates are relatable and fun and dare I say this… not at all annoying.
Doyle’s writing paced wonderfully and the story flows perfectly. I loved the extra glimpses we got of Nate and Dorie in this! Baseball is still a part of the story as well, since Fitz runs Nate’s foundation and in addition to the pro players, we get to see some moments where Deke is coaching the town little league team *swoon*.
I also really liked that we got to know a bit more about Mama Gin… I thought it was a bit weird that in the first book we know she’s Nate’s mom but there was very little interaction between them, so it was a welcome change for this second book. I love that we find out a bit more about why she stepped up and adopted Fitz after the death of her ex.
There is some back and forth in this one, mostly because these two are best friends and Fitz really struggles with the idea that if things go south between them, she could lose the one person she’s learned she can count on over the years, and that scares her. It was completely understandable, and while some may find it annoying, I found Fitz’s struggles with this believeable and it totally worked for this story.
I know I mentioned it in my first review, but fans of Jill Shalvis really will find this series completely enjoyable! If you’re looking for books with that small-town feel, a story filled with tough, sexy & sweet guys… strong and independent women, and a story that you’ll find yourself completely invested in, then look no further. Jen Doyle’s fun, lighthearted books full of sweet and sexy moments are definitely what you need to pick up next!

Why hadn't I heard of this author and series before? I'll be going find book 1 in just a few minutes.
I really liked this! Fitz and Deke have been friends for years. Best friends. What we find out is that they both crushed on each other when Fitz first moved to Inspiration. Fitz was hurt by letting her crush be known to the wrong people and Deke pushed his away when he found out she was the half-sister of his best bud, Nate. But that crush made it's self known again and it was sweet watching them fall in love.
My heart broke a little for Fitz and what she's had to endure from the people of Inspiration. They blamed her for Patrick Hawkins leaving his wife and kids. Ummm, she was a child. It wasn't her fault he was a cheating you-know-what and left his family and started a new one. It hurt lots of people's feelings and I think the only who had any real right to be hurt would be Mama Gin and her kids. And while they were hurt, they got over it before everyone else.
There were LOTS of characters in here that I had a hard time at first figuring out how they were connected...sisters and brothers, friends, etc. I don't know if I had a hard time because I didn't read the first book or if my brain was just on overload LOL After I figured them all out though, I was good to go!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I was excited to read the next one. Sadly, I struggled with this. Hard.
The first half of the book is Fitz and Deke thinking about kissing, then actually kissing and swearing it can never happen again, only to continue to think about kissing. It was exhausting. When they actually had their shit together, they're adorable. They have a fun, friendly relationship and I would have loved to see more of it instead of the constant push and pull.
My main complaint is that there are a lot a lot a lot of characters. Some are related, some a friends, and some are townspeople. I legit had no idea who fell into what category and I finally had to give up trying to figure it out.
I kept readings because the BFF to more trope is my favorite and I needed to see how it all happened. I might read the next in the series, but I would depend on who the MCs are.

Deke was such a sweetheart, and even though he hadn't crossed the line from playboy to manwhore quite yet, it was damn close. Fitz has dealt with her parents' death when she was a teenager, and she grew up under a judgmental microscope, giving nobody in Inspiration, IA cause to question her morals. The two have always been close friends, and both suddenly seeing the other in a new light was somehow both sweet and sexy. Witness:

I just love Ms. Doyle's lighthearted yet delicious voice, her fabulous blend of humor and heat that of a much more seasoned author (did I mention this was only her second book?). She has earned a spot on my auto-buy list, and I'm super excited for the next story in this über excellent series!

Deke and Fitz are good friends and they spend a lot of time together. Deke has quite a reputation when it comes to women. His friends have made it clear that he can't date anyone close to him, because that would end in disaster. Fitz has never been in a serious relationship and her wish is that this will never happen to her either, because of the pain losing someone can cause. She has a big wall around her heart. Deke and Fitz are attracted to one another, only they shouldn't act on their feelings or should they? They have everything against them, but maybe something beautiful is hiding underneath all the obstacles they have on their way.
Called Up is a great romantic story about two people who aren't experienced when it comes to relationships. It was interesting to see the friendship between Fitz and Deke evolve into something more. Deke owns a bar and he's good at listening to people. He's kind and is always willing to help out. Fitz had a difficult childhood and there are many things that are still bothering her. My heart ached for her sometimes. She's a strong woman though and she tries to conquer her fears. I liked that about her. Deke and Fitz are suddenly attracted to each other on many different levels and because of their close friendship Jen Doyle could give their relationship a lot of depth. I enjoyed reading about the strong connection between them. They're different when it comes to sex, but the result is the same, they've never been in love before and the first time is special straight away, which is such a romantic idea for a story.
Jen Doyle writes about bonds between people in a fascinating way. I love how she explores the relationships between her main characters, she's writing about love, family and friendship in an open and honest way. She's giving her characters clear values and she describes their personalities in detail, so it's easy to get to know them well. There's a lot of pushing forward and pulling back between Deke and Fitz and that's being done realistically and beautifully. I understood why it happened and it was definitely interesting to see the emotional developments. It's what I enjoyed most about Called Up.
In Called Up the main characters of Calling It appear from time to time. It was lovely to read about them again. It isn't necessary to read Calling It before Calling Up though. The books can easily be read as standalones. I love the warm group of friends Jen Doyle has come up with. The main characters belong and that is something precious and heartwarming. I really like this series and enjoyed reading Called Up very much.

I read the third book in the series a couple of months ago, and it instantly made it to my 'favorites' shelf. That being said, my expectations were super high for this one. I think it would've definitely made it to that very same shelf if it weren't for a couple of -what I'd call- shortcomings within the book.
Fitz is seriously a character I'd add to my "badass-heroines" list. Needless to say, she's got to be my favorite character in the series, so far. Her past was tragic. But her forgiving and selfless mind-set was so inspiring and beautiful. I honestly don't know how a person who's gone through the things she has could possibly continue on with their life like she did, she's absolutely incredible. I definitely sympathized with her, especially after reading the part were she talked about how the whole school knew who she was, and all the bullying she had to go through, and then her getting stuck with that "nickname", it was awful. I loved Nate so much. I'd sometimes forget that she wasn't his actual sister with all the over-protectiveness going on, but I enjoyed every second of it. Then Deke was this super hopeless-romantic guy with this cool demeanor below which lies that vulnerable side of his which made me weak to my knees. He was so patient and loving and him noticing the little things about Fitz that no one else noticed was a sight to behold.
It felt like the first 70% of the book was a little slow-paced, and there were way too many minor characters that were introduced, which messed up with my head. It felt like that part mainly consisted of flashbacks rather than actual present events, which made the book a little harder to get into.
All in all, this book was a hopeful story about two best friends that basically saved each other and altered each other's lives incredibly. The character transformations were remarkable. And the writing style has proven to be one of my favorite things about Mrs Doyle's novels!

Then Deke was this super hopeless-romantic guy with this cool demeanor below which lies that vulnerable side of his which made me weak to my knees. He was so patient and loving and him noticing the little things about Fitz that no one else noticed was a sight to behold.
It felt like the first 70% of the book was a little slow-paced, and there were way too many minor characters that were introduced, which messed up with my head. It felt like that part mainly consisted of flashbacks rather than actual present events, which made the book a little harder to get into.
All in all, this book was a hopeful story about two best friends that basically saved each other and altered each other's lives incredibly. The character transformations were remarkable. And the writing style has proven to be one of my favorite things about Mrs Doyle's novels!

I love sports romances. Everything about them give me chills, but this one actually sent me on a new high. This is not your typical sports romance, that we are talking about pros and how there are so many woman that they can't decide, or when the do decide they found the one. This book had a lot of depth to begin with. Both characters Deke and Fitz are a match that you can not deny. Deke is not you pro athlete. He runs a bar and runs a little league, he is just a normal guy that everyone loves. He loves his town and everyone in it. He is the poster child of the community, but he realizes that he too has lived in a bubble for years and never knew it. Fitz is a different player too. You have to love her, she has so many things stacked against her in her life at the beginning, that she thinks she is the town joke. She has few friends she trusts and that includes Deke. What makes this story so great that is that it doesn't happen overnight. You gain trust over years and that is what has happened. I think they were in love with each other longer than they care to admit, but both afraid to ruin that friendship that had built throughout the years. After they let what has building up between them escalate, they don't know how to proceed, so many things happen that it is so back and forth that you don't know what do do. They know they want each others, but when secrets come known and then new secrets come up will it be enough to destroy the new found happiness that they found with each other. Deke's a player at the beginning, but as time goes on you see so much depth in his character that you root for him throughout the book. Going back to the characters, Deke is awesome he is a stand up you that only wants the best for everyone. He was the person you want to succeed. You want him to find what he is looking for Fitz is perfect. Her past is hard, it is a small town and so many rumors are spread and they blamer her, when it was nothing she could control. She accepted that, but once again the author showed so much growth in her that you see so many changes by the end. All the secondary characters were great too.
I would love to know more about them as if they would get their own books. I think there is so much more in this book that I can only hope for more from this author. Thinking everything over in this book I have to say I just ant more. I want more for these characters in the book, not going to give away the story but I have to tell you I sat down and read it in one sitting. They story grips you from the beginning and doesn't leave you till the end. You want more from these characters and you see them grow so much during this book that you wish you had more. The only thing I would have liked to see a little more of was closure for the these two. I am so hoping that they get another book, because I feel they still have things to work through, or at most they are written into a book that is about other characters of this book. Either way I just want more. Just a great book all around and I hope that I get to read more from this author.

I don’t think falling in love with your best friend had ever been this sexy or sweet. I firmly believe this because this book was those and more. I fell in love a little bit with Deke myself every time he appeared. My heart broke for Fitz, so much so that I wanted to get inside the book and try and become another friend to her. And when I’m this invested in the characters, their lives, it’s a no brainer I’ve enjoyed this story. So so much. How can I not? Not only was I already crazy looking forward to it, but I also knew that there was a small town involved-which, by the way, became almost a requirement for my choice of romances lately, I won’t lie- and a friends to lovers story that was one of the deepest, most complicated yet simplest I’ve ever read.
For those of you who haven’t yet read the first book, my advice is to change that fact immediately. I was so excited for this series, and it seems like it’ll only get better so it’s better to start from the beginning. And for those who’re familiar with the tight knit crowd of Inspiration, yeah, you’ve got a sweet ride waiting for you. Especially if you’re a fan of friends to lovers stories because let me tell you, this is the king and queen of those rolled into one.
I’ve already said it but I’ve loved both Deke and Fitz from the first book. Although we had clues as to the nature of their relationship-which is purely friends only plus a dose of chemistry- the intensity of their friendship and care for each other was palpable in their own book. We knew the background of Fitz since she was the step sister of the previous hero, but clearly we were only scratching the surface. The deep emotions she had buried inside, the hurt she carried all those years..I’ve never felt sympathy with the likes of this for a character before. Fitz and Deke’s friendship was something to envy too. Everyone should have someone like Deke in their corner, let me tell you.
As emotional as this book was, it was also very sexy. There’s just something enticing in two friends slowly falling for each other. The secret glances, the odd reactions, the self delusion phase of friends with benefits..It worked out so well, so sweet and sexy that it was impossible not to fall in love along with them. Yep, that’s what I did, folks, I fell in love with this couple. Individually, they were okay, they got by and they dealt, but the real magic was when these two were together. Their actual strength came through when they stood up for one another, when they were alone, existing in their own world. That was the kind of strong bond I thought they had and it was beautiful. Kinda made me feel like a third wheel invading their private moments.
I don’t have any more words to tell you how much I loved this book. This was a deep story, one of love and trust, friendship and love, forgiveness and understanding. It was a kind of friends to lovers story I’d want to read. One I definitely recommend.

My Review:
I was worried going into this second book from this author because the first book was so good, but I should have had more faith. This book was fabulous, too...and that was in no small part to the character that is Fitz. Gah...everything about her story broke my heart. She has been through so much and still holds her head high. She's such a strong person.
And even better...this is a friends to lovers story...which I adore. Fitz and Deke have been best friends for years, but suddenly things seem to be changing between them. There's a new awareness that neither of them know what to do about. The thing is...Fitz is hiding things from Deke that he's never known about and suddenly all that stuff that's been buried for years is coming out, too.
This story was so good. I love angst and this book is filled with it. Sixteen years ago, Fitz was on her way to Inspiration with her parents when a tornado struck...killing them and throwing her life into a tailspin. Because what she never knew is that her father had a whole other family in Inspiration...which includes three half-siblings that she never knew anything about. In a bizarre turn of events Fitz finds herself having to make a new life here in this small town where everyone loves her siblings...so she's the enemy. As if her life wasn't already tragic and devastating enough, but now she was the target for scorn and rampant bullying. How she ever survived that is astounding...and heartbreaking. I could have just read her story and loved the book because of so much that she overcame.
But then there's Deke. Deke's story is very different from Fitz's. He's grown up in the center of town. He's a happy-go-lucky, friendly guy that everyone likes. He's always happy. And he likes everyone...including most every woman in town. Since his family owns the local bar where he works every night, he has LOTS of opportunity. He's a bit of a man-slut...Fitz's word for him. And his partner of choice for years just happens to be her biggest tormenter....but Deke never knew.
I love how this relationship between them changes them both. It's a great character arc for both the hero and the heroine. And even better, I just really liked both of them, too. It was so fun to read how they work through their friendship as it becomes more. It felt very real, but kept those levels of romantic moments that melted my heart. I loved this story so much and then the story on the backdrop of baseball and the charity foundations that Fitz works with....it was all just phenomenal.
I loved the book and highly recommend it. You can easily read both books in the series as a stand-alone, but they are both excellent books so I suggest you pick them both up.

I've previously read Calling It, book one in the Calling It series, so I dived straight into Calling Up; a much anticipated second book, where I'm instantly drawn into the plot by the familiar characters from Inspiration!
Angelica 'Fitz' Wade Hawkins is baseball player Nate Hawkins' half-sister. At thirty-two years old, she runs the Iowa Dream Foundation set up by her brother in Inspiration, the town where she's lived for seventeen years...if only it felt like home. After an incident during high school, her brother, and his friends provided a much welcome protective shell around her, as she'd lost trust in those supposed to be her friend. All those years later, she still prefers to be one of the guys, with Deke as her best friend. However, she's reached a crossroads in her life and begins to consider other options, only she didn't expect her best friend to make her life changing decisions more complicated.
Max 'Deke' Deacon, Inspiration's bar owner and League League coach is also a favourite with all the townswomen. He's never been embarrassed by the fact he's never wanted a serious relationship, yet recently, hooking up with any woman he fancies has lost its appeal...why?
I love Fitz and Deke together. Neither expected to come to some serious conclusions within their close friendship; the realisation they don't know each other as well as they thought!
How can best friends satisfy their new found lust for each other without ruining their friendship?
"Regular anything equals a relationship," she managed, closing her eyes.
"No," he said, "It's like… It's a schmelationship. Sounds like, but not the same thing."
We get to experience a full set of emotions from both protagonists as Deke realises he's found his 'your it for me,' with Fitz, but feels guilty for missing important facts in her life where he could have actively helped her overcome her issues. Fitz wants it all too but believes her past is too broken; that she's not capable or deserves to expect more from her life. It's a time for soul-searching; to find a compromise that works for them mutually once the secrets are out openly.
I really love that within each book in this series, the secondary characters are so much more than a quick introduction and exit. For those that have previously read Calling It, we get plenty of insight into how Nate and Dorie are doing. Other members of the Iowa Dream are included too as their lives are very much interwoven with those of the protagonists. However, this isn't overwhelmingly so, as Jen Doyle does a pretty good job at keeping the balance just right. All this is glued together with witty dialogue, some sizzling sexy times and a cast of likeable characters you'd want to befriend in the real world.

After years of being best friends, Max Deacon aka Deke and Angelica Hawkins aka Fitz, nothing can really tear them apart. They spend every chance they can together and nothing has ever been nothing but platonic. However, one night that all changes. Deke knows that being with her in any way besides friends is all kinds of wrong. Being right is so overrated! Over the course of a few months’ feelings grow deep; friends with benefits will no longer be enough.
After the first book, I was not sure if I was going to continue with this series. I enjoyed the first one but it was not something that really grabbed my attention. Called Up gave me hope for this series. We got to know more of Fitz and Deke from the first book, Calling It. Fitz could stand up to the guys and was even considered as one most of her life. She didn’t mind as she didn’t do well with feelings. She has taken care of herself and those around her for most of her life. Deke was one she could count on for a good time and reliability.
Both Deke and Fitz were fun characters and complimented each other well. As we got to know the Dream Team more, it is easy to see how well these friends overcome obstacles that include natural disasters as well as ones they create. I loved their dynamic and the support they shared even when they were fighting. A few things that bugged me was how Fitz did not respect Deke’s feelings nor his one request for honesty and trust. Where she fails miserably and puts her blame on Deke and her past.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel and will definitely continue this series! If you like contemporary romances with secret encounters, a reformed playboy, and a woman trying to find her place then this one is for you.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Even without the professional sports glamour, I enjoyed the second book in this series even better than the first. The whole town of Inspiration remains a little too sweet for me, but Fitz and Deke are thankfully a little more caustic than Nate and Dorrie in the first book.
Both of these characters are fantastic. Deke is the laid back town playboy who finally finds out some long kept secrets and actually falls for a woman for the first time ever. He is endearing as a Little League coach and uncle and the way Fitz runs circles around his new emotions is amusing.
Fitz is Nate’s half sister, known in town for her ugly family history. Life has taught her not to trust and not to love. Always one of the guys, she can offer casual sex, but she won’t let her heart get broken.
This second book feels a little more modern than the first. While the town is still All-American community family values, there is more awareness of differences and outsiders in this story. Fitz and Nate’s friendship/hook-up/more? relationship will feel familiar to younger readers. Fitz’s professional struggles are interesting and I really loved her as a strong female lead.
Ultimately, this story is more small town realism than superstar sportsman fantasy and I enjoyed the honesty and wider themes explored in this book. For me, there are still a few too many cute and sweet moments in this story, but I liked the slightly grittier look at the perfect hometown. This might work as a standalone, but I think readers should start at the beginning of this fantastic series.

Loved every heartwarming, crazy funny, sigh worthy moment of this second book by this wondrous breakout new author. Having read the first book in the series, Calling It (giving it five stars no less), I didn't think Ms Doyle could out do her debut book, but she's definitely surpassed that with Called Up. With what I now see as her signature wit and snappy dialogue, Ms Doyle has once again brought to life such memorable characters that stay with you long after the last page is read.
Brought back are Nate and Dorie to hand off the baton to Deke (Max Deacon) the deliciously handsome and charming the pants off the ladies bartender/Bar Owner of Inspiration, Iowa and feisty, gorgeous and independent Fritz (Angelina Hawkins), Nate's little sister, a.k.a. Baby Hawk. Deke and Fritz are combustible, but fooling hardly anyone trying to keep their chemistry under wraps while she works through issues about her past, that have been a long time in bubbling to the surface.
With the whole humorous cast of secondary characters that this author has clearly lovingly created to compliment Deke and Fritz, the story winds through a rich ensemble of emotions as these two find their way to make a life long friendship turn into a romantic relationship. There's HEAT between Deke and Fritz that is harnessed into a HEA that'll literally leave you cheering and sighing together.
I look forward to reading what's up next from this author, whether it's more in the Calling It series, or something entirely new.

I really enjoyed Calling It (book 1) so it was with great delight that I embarked on this newest book in the series. Nate and his friends were very engaging, so I was sure that this would be a good read.
This time we get Deke and Fitz's stories, and story. Their lives have been intertwined since Fitz (Angelica) was first fostered by the Jensens, and then adopted by Nate's Mom (Mama Gin). As we rejoin the gang and get to see much more in Nate's home town, a number of secrets are uncovered. I love that we get both points of view, and that Deke, in spite of being involved in everything, is somewhat clueless - had he been too perfect it would have spoiled the story. I really enjoyed Calling It (book 1) so it was with great delight that I embarked on this newest book in the series. Nate and his friends were very engaging, so I was sure that this would be a good read.
This time we get Deke and Fitz's stories, and story. Their lives have been intertwined since Fitz (Angelica) was first fostered by the Jensens, and then adopted by Nate's Mom (Mama Gin). As we rejoin the gang and get to see much more in Nate's home town, a number of secrets are uncovered. I love that we get both points of view, and that Deke, in spite of being involved in everything, is somewhat clueless - had he been too perfect it would have spoiled the story. This was my first book from Jen Doyle and I really enjoyed it. Although when I started reading, I didn't realize that Called Up was the second story in this series and while I was disappointed I didn't have some of the back story - I couldn't stop reading about Fitz and Deke. I will definitely go back and read Calling It.
Long time friends, these two are as close as a male and female can be without it being sexual. They've always acted like their are only platonic feelings for one another between them because they each believed that was all the other wanted.
As they discover that is not the case, I wanted jump for joy. It was so much fun to read. I loved their banter and stolen kisses. Their lust for one another was barely controlled in some scenes and I was giddy for the moment when they surrendered to it.
Getting their happily ever after is a bit rocky but that's what made Fitz and Deke's book such awesome reading. Their story moved at a fast pace - it's jammed packed with lots of drama and hella hot sex. I devoured it in one afternoon.
Called Up a highly entertaining friends to lovers story, full of quirky characters whose lives and loves are worth experiencing. I absolutely suggest grabbing a copy of this book.

Sometimes they say the backstory tells it all. In this case having backstory was necessary to move forward with Deke and Fitz. Their past shaped their present and was making waves for their futures. This friends to lovers had more than just being friends to connect them. There was so much more behind it all and it was needed to make their bond so complete. I believed that neither took it lightly when they made that step to become more than just friends.
This coming together has witty banter, a delicate sweetness, and a rich passion that focuses in on the two and all they had between them. After traversing the past to the present things work in favor of both Fitz and Deke. They had a connection that just could not go unclaimed.

Friends to Lovers is one of my favorite Troupe and this one takes the cake as one of my favorites.
Fitz and Deke have been friends forever. Deke was one of the only people that made her feel as if she wasn't the outcast in their tiny little town - although she totally was. Even her own half sister couldn't stand to be around her.
Now 17 years later, things are starting to change between the two. Deke is starting to notice more things about Fitz that he never felt before. I mean come on! She's practically his sister, with her being his best friends little half sister. But for some reason, he just can't get that out of his head.
But Fitz has a secret... one that kept her as an outcast still. At least in her own eyes.
This was a great story and I loved every minute of their journey. A fun and sexy read.

Loved this story! From the first page to the last I was captivated. It's a classic best friend's little sister trope but it is very well done and the characters of Fitz and Deke make it fresh and unique.
Fitz never plans to open her heart to love again. After the terrible loss of her parents she never wants to risk feeling that pain again. So when she starts seeing her friend Deke in a new and scary way she tries her best to push those feelings and Deke away. Deke's not going away that easily though. Now that he has seen and tasted Fitz as a woman there is no way he can let her go. Convincing Fitz to give them a chance may be the hardest thing he's ever done.
Definitely a recommended read!

The first one wasn't fantastic but it was cute. I'm struggling with this one because the trigger for Fitz and Deke to go from friends to lovers is basically nonexistent. I don't feel where their new feelings are coming from, which sticks because that's the best part of this trope for me.

I always like a friends to lovers romance. CALLED UP gives up just that.
Fitz and Deke have been best friends for a long time. The hang out and understand each other. But when they both start feeling something other than friendship "love", both of their worlds get turned upside down.
Fitz hasn't had the easiest life. Her parents died in a tornado and she found herself being raised by the one woman who should hate her....life most of the town. She's worked her butt off to atone for the sins of her father, but a small town never forget or lets you, leaving Fitz to feel like she needs to find someplace else to spread her wings. She also realizes that spreading her wings might mean leaving behind the one person she doesn't want to be without. Her best friend.
Deke is the easy going guy. The one who's a lot of fun but doesn't really pay attention to what's going on around him. That's how he missed all the things Fitz went through in high school. And continues to miss how she's still treated by certain residents of their hometown. Once her understands that what he feels for Fitz is more than just friendship, his eyes are suddenly opened to everything. He's hurt and frustrated to know that he missed all of this while at the same time mad that Fitz never confided in him.
Fitz and Deke don't make it easy on themselves when it comes to their romance. It takes an act of nature for them to get over the past and look to their future. But when they do, this fun romance leaves you with a smile on your face.

I absolutely adored Calling It when I read it over a year ago. Jen's writing was a breath of fresh air and I loved her take on baseball romance. (Which isn't always my favorite because baseball isn't my favorite sport.) I blew through the first book and was so excited to learn it was not, in fact, a standalone, but the first in a new series. I couldn't wait to read this one when I got my hands on it. Unfortunately, I struggled a bit when I first tried, so it got reshelved for a few months. I'm glad I gave it a second chance, however, because I did wind up thoroughly enjoying Deke and Fitz's story.
With it's mix of friends to lovers and best friend's sister tropes, this pretty much had my name written all over it from the moment I read the blurb. Both Deke and Fitz were wonderful. I especially liked that Fitz was the one who was more locked down and less interested in a relationship, regardless of how attracted she was to Deke. Of course, she has a good reason to keep her walls up high and tight... especially with Deke. Fortunately, he's persistent and their chemistry and attraction is no match for her reservations. I smiled and swooned my way through this one, enjoying the humor, romance and sexy times.

Review: In the second book in the Calling It series from Jen Doyle, we have Fitz Hawkins(Nate' sister who we met in Calling It) and Max Deacon a.k.a Deke one of their best friends.Though this book can be read as a standalone it would certainly be more enjoyable if you read Calling It before this one.
Fitz and Deke have been best friends for a long time and Fitz used to have a crush on him in high school which was used against her in an incident instigated by Peggy.Lately, Deke has been giving her these looks that set her on fire and she doesn't know what to make of them.Deke has also been thinking of Fitz a lot and not in the sisterly way.Though, both of them are attracted to each other , they don't want to ruin their friendship.
Fitz has had a difficult upbringing.The town of Inspiration hasn't always been kind to her considering her childhood.Her father had left Nate and his children with Mama Gin to go off with Fitz and her mother.She had never known that she had half-siblings.When she came to Inspiration, she and the Hawking siblings where blindsided by this truth, causing a lot of hostility even though she wasn't the one to be blamed for her father's mistakes.
Though Nate warmed up towards her and protected her after a threatening event, her half-sisters took some time to be nice to her.These experiences have caused her to be wary and not too trusting.Deke on the other hand is the hometown hero.He is handsome,charming and loved by all.He also has a lot of flings from time to time.When a particular incident from sixteen years ago comes to light, it brings him closer with Fitz and they act upon their attraction to each other.
But will they agree to give their relationship a try or live in denial forever?
I loved Nate and Dorie in Calling It!(personally they're my favorite couple).We've seen the attraction simmering between Fitz and Deke in book one itself and so I was very excited for Called Up!
Both Fitz and Deke were well done.I loved how Fitz is strong,loyal and vulnerable at the same time.I loved her relationships with Nate and Dorie too.(Glad to see Nate and Dorie doing well :D)
Deke was also an amazing character.He helped out with his family, took care of his widowed sister and her children.Lola's triplets were adorable!Peggy, the woman who tormented Fitz in high school adds a little tension to the story.As Fitz's experiences in high school come to light, he begins to see a darker side of Inspiration that he hasn't really seen before.
My only gripe with the book was the constant back and forth that Fitz and Deke did with their relationship.Two steps ahead and then back to we-must-not-ruin-our-friendship square.It would have also been more believable if it was showed that they have been a little attracted to each other always.In the book,the writing made it look as if all of a sudden over a span of one week, they suddenly developed feelings for each other.(I guess both of them were dense since everyone could see the attraction between them :P)
Though I know I shouldn't compare, Calling It still remains my favorite book.Fitz and Deke's story was wonderful to read.It had a perfect mix of romance,humor and steam.

When I read Jen Doyle's Calling It, I knew we'd have a long author/reader relationship. There was something so fresh, exciting and comfortable about her writing that she drew me immediately in and she's done it again with Called Up. Maximillian "Deke" Deacon and Angelica "Fitz" Wade Hawkins are the best of friends and one night that changes when they both begin to see each other in a new light and that light burns brightly, no matter how hard they try to turn it off it just keeps on shining and guiding them through their ups and downs and all the complications that arise as their friends and family begin to realize their relationship has changed and as they try to adapt to their new normal.
The thing is the heroine is neurotic as hell and why she has every reason to be, it could have been too much if she also wasn't such a strong and selfless person. That balance is what made her likeable, but the hero, OMG the hero is so totally my kind of guy even though he has man whorish tendencies. He's such a great guy that even the women he's been with (and there are many) never say anything bad about him. He's selfless as well and one of those people everyone wants to be around because of his personality. This author's ability to round out these characters who have a lot of flaws, hang-ups, and baggage really amazed me and watching them go from best of friends to more (with a lot of neurosis in between) was riveting. I loved these two together, they balanced each other, they helped each other and yes, they drove each other crazy in more than one way but the LOVE between them was easy to see even before they wanted to admit they went from loving one another to being IN love with one another.

It was interesting watching Deke who has always loved his hometown and his perfect life to realize that not everything and not everyone's life was as easy as he thought it was. For a man like Deke, this was a bitter pill to swallow and letting it all go was very difficult for him. For Fitz, confronting her past and putting to rest all the hurt and learning to trust proved to almost be more than she could handle and it took her a long time, a lot of soul searching and tackling her worst fear to help her see the light.
I loved this story, this group of characters and the little town of Inspiration and with each book I get more drawn in and I can't wait to see who is next in line for their happily ever after!

I had no idea when I started reading the book that it would even surpass Calling It. If I loved Calling It then I heart Called Up. This book is much more than the first. The author continues to rock the readers with her awesome story-telling skills.
This book is an extension of the previous one. All the characters are present from it and it focuses on Fitz and Deke and oh my hotness, this is one complicated relationship. The tropes of best friends to lovers and best friend's sister are very much present in this book. But it's not limited to the very often used themes. The book is much much more! It has all the angst of a complicated small town life and the past baggage derived from it.
I liked Fitz earlier but totally fell in love with her in this book. She has so much heart in spite of being hurt by everyone in the past. I for one salute her for her strong will and cheerful attitude. I understood her hurt and I felt so bad for her. Deke is one hero who gets better and better as the story progresses. He changes from an uncomplicated easy going guy to a sensitive person in the end. One thing I never understood was how he could be so blind with his friends' situations.
The small town feel is authentic and the darker side is revealed in the pages of the book. Usually only the bright parts are highlighted but the author did right in bringing to light the negative nuances of a small town. Kudos to the author for her wonderful writing and her gumption. The writing was easy to read and I got lost in the characters in no time.
This book is a easy one to reread and I believe it will touch my heart every time I read it. This is one book which easily falls under my favourite reread books. And that tells me that the author is one to watch out for. I can't wait to read about the other characters.

Called up is a friends to lovers romance that left me craving more.
Fitz and Deke have been friends for almost two decades. One tragic event made their paths come crashing together. Although they were both attracted to each other from the moment that they met, it would be a long long time before either of them acted on it.
Fitz's whole life came crashing down when she was a teenager. Everything that she had taken for grated was ravaged and disintegrated in the blink of an eye. She moves to a town where no one likes her because of her fathers mistakes. She gains a new family and new bullies. There seems to be nothing good to look forward to, until Deke rushes into her life and returns her stolen backpack. 17 years later he is her best friend, or is he something more?

Deke has always been attracted to Fitz but has never considered being in a long term relationship with anyone. He runs a bar, coaches little league and has short flings with women. He is very happy with the life that he has created for himself. However while he has been keeping everyone at a distance it seems that he has also been wearing blinders. Slowly he has to face some hard realities. The first one being that he wants a relationship with his best friend. Bad.
There were certain aspects of this novel that I like and some that I adored. The last page left me in tears. I could not have imagined a better ending. Jen Doyle did a great job bringing her characters to life. I really loved the main characters and the secondary ones. I can't wait to see who will get there HEA next in this series.

4 Uncomplicated, Just Friends Stars. I’m a sucker for people who’ve grown up together, her big brother’s best-friend, his little sister is off-limits, kind of story. This one has all of that going for it. Add in the Iowa Dream Team aspect and a healthy dose of baseball and you’ve totally got me. This is the second of the Calling It series by Jen Doyle and it’s every bit as good as the first book.
Max “Deke” Deacan has protected Fitz, his best friend’s younger sister, since the day he met her. It’s what he does. Lately, he’s been looking at her a little differently. He shouldn’t be. Nate will kill him. But, darn if he cares. Deke is the happy-go-lucky one of the Dream Team pack, he guy everyone goes to when they need to talk. It’s natural, Deke runs the local bar.
Fitz, Angelica Wade Hawkins, first came to Inspiration seventeen years ago. It was the night of the fateful tornado that put Inspiration on the national map. It was also the night she lost everything. Her parents died in that tornado and shortly after she was adopted by the woman her father left, the family he left behind, the family the whole town loves. Angelica and her mother were the reasons he left. Until that night neither family knew the other existed. So, yeah, she lost everything that night. She’s been the town pariah ever since. She’s done everything she could to be perfect, to stay in the background, to not draw attention to herself. She knows everyone is waiting for her to show she’s just like her father. She can’t wait to leave this town and her past behind.
This a cute, quick, and easy read. It’s pure entertainment and pure fun. You get to see plenty of Nate and Dorie and even find out more about some of the other characters you met in Calling It. This town, and it’s residents, make you fall in love with them.

She had a group of guys that she became close to, but they didn't know the extent of trauma she went through, as she never complained to anyone. Now with her locked up heart, she is ok with being alone the rest of her life, instead of suffering the all encompassing pain that happens when she loses them. Deke has been one of her best friends for years, but when he instigates a sexy encounter, she feels something more than friendship, and that terrifies her. Max "Deke" Deacon is the town playboy, as he doesn't let women close to him. He knows he can count on his old high school teammates, and Fitz, to have his back. Even though he's been secretly fantasizing about her, he knows she's off limits. He finally crosses a line that opens up the can of feelings they've been fighting for a long time. When he admits to himself that he wants it all with her, will he be able to convince Fitz to take a chance on them?

Deke and Fitz have been friends forever. What Deke does not understand is why he is so overall attracted to her lately. There is no way he can date one of his best friends sisters. But he cannot contain what he is feeling for her. When he learns all of the childhood secret’s that she is holing in that have everything to do with him he realizes that his life could have changed a long time ago. When their lips lock for the first time they both realize there is no chance of them not doing that again.
This was a fun read. Fitz has a lot to lose if Deke breaks her heart. Deke on the other hand wants to show her that she can be happy and let her guard down. The chemistry between them is scorching. They were friends first but seems they might be willing to see where this can go. That is if she can get over the past.
