Inventing medical devices - A perspective from India

Rate this book
In this book, the author shares his experiences, anecdotes, insights and failures while inventing medical devices in India over the last five years. The idea is to give entrepreneurs (clinicians, engineers, designers, business professionals) a realistic expectation of the time, money, co-ordination and teamwork required to develop a new medical device in India. This book is specially recommended for Indian healthcare professionals who are passionate about solving unmet clinical challenges by inventing new medical devices, but are not sure of how to go about taking their ideas from a concept stage to an actual product. Entrepreneurs from engineering, design and business backgrounds will also find this book useful, as it illustrates ways to engage with doctors, and gives a comprehensive perspective of the path from ideation to commercialization.

We all know that the health care system in India is broken and requires some good steps in the direction of improvement. However, rather than copying expensive solutions from developed countries, which are often ignorant to our needs, we need to develop home grown solutions. This book by Dr. Chaturvedi provides a good framework that is going to help doctors and engineers come together to develop devices that is going to improve the medical system. I liked the way things have been explained. The “How-I-Do-It” and “Advice From The Expert” section are quite informative which is going to help entrepreneurs to bring some big changes in the medical industry.

Dr Chaturvedi does a great job of covering a lot of the relevant issues in developing and commercializing medical devices in India. The book is a quick, useful read; rich with real-life examples to illustrate the range of problems and approaches. Dr Chaturvedi himself is an inventor, and he has perfectly captured his experiences - all the way from finding and defining the unmet need (which is very critical) to taking the product in the market and get end-users to actually use it (which is the real test of the success). The appendices detail all kinds of useful information - various seed funding schemes, subsequent funding, regulatory approval processes, and the like.
(Trivia:This is a book fresh out of the oven - published in Nov 2015; and written over merely 3 weeks!)

In daily life, we come across a lot of people who are researching upon different medical inventions to help the mankind, and i have never ever come across such a wonderful book that talks about invention in such an easy and broad way. This book describes an entrepreneur’s entrepreneurial journey and this book is an asset for the entrepreneurs who are trying to enter the healthcare market and try something on their own. The author has brilliant described the process, his personal experiences and easy way to enter this market and to create a product on their own keeping the complexities and India’s environment in mind. What i really liked about this book is the easy going narration and i got to know something about a field and product which was totally new to me. The book is simple without any grammatical mistakes, simple cover and it goes well with the book. This book is a sort of self help book, so it might please the masses but it will surely appeal to the larger audience who are trying to break the shell and get out of their comfort zone and so something for the society. cover and story is appealing, must read

So, starting with the cover, the cover is attractive. The title is quite intriguing along with the blurb that sounds to be quite exciting. Dr. Chaturvedi has put in all his experiences in the field of medicine to develop and invent medical devices as per the needs of the country. Since, the health system in this country is in a very bad shape, he has tried to provide a solution that is as per the requirements of this country rather than copying from developed western countries. I think this book has tried to provide a framework to both engineers and doctors to work together to invent and commercialize the ideas so to improve and better the health system in India.

To be true, I liked the illustrations in the book. It was funny and made reading quite enjoyable. Moreover, the simple and lucid language was another good thing which made the things easy to understand and didn’t hinder the flow. The book is basically about inventing medical devices in India. Normally, the engineers don’t understand clinical problems whereas the doctors don’t know how to commercialize their ideas. This book provides a framework for both of them to come together and innovate and develop so as to improve the poor healthcare system in India.
