Sometimes the villain must create the hero.

The streets of Arcania are overrun with crime, deteriorating as a madman named Fortune makes himself at home. He shows no mercy, striking down anyone in his path – including Nova Benson’s little sister. Devastated, Nova vows to seek justice for her family, but aside from her freak strength and impenetrable skin, how is she supposed to stop a monster like Fortune?

Cole Warner wants to help people. Entrusted to keep his family’s secret, he’s also frustrated at having to hide his gift. He knows he could do more to help in the fight against Fortune. If he could convince his sister Penelope to join him, they might even have a chance at beating him. When Cole meets Nova, he realizes his whole world is about to change. And he’s going to welcome it with open arms.

Falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan.

Then again, neither was becoming a superhero.

Wow! I have to be honest, the first few pages made me eye roll, a typical teenage story with cringe-worthy relationships... I was so wrong!

This books has everything; a great story, an intensity that set you on edge, lovely humble relationships and a cool villain that genuinely made you tingle with a touch of fear. It was a fantastic first book of the series and I desperately need the next one! I genuinely shouted out when it ended!

The novel follows the formula of a typical YA novel, really, but I am a sucker for superheroes/Vigilantes. Though I couldn't get fully obsessed with this story, I still found it pretty quick and easy to read.

As a reviewer, we often get requests for books. That are similar to ones that we’ve reviewed before, well not similar but in a genre that is similar. Usually, when someone says if you like this book, then you’ll love this one. Sometimes that's not the case and sometimes it is.

Supernova, came to me that exact same way. But I felt that I should give it a chance. I love super power type stories. So I jumped in. Arcania is another world, one with the gifted. The gifted have powers. Some stronger than others. Nova is an unbreakable but has never really understood her gift. She doesn’t feel pain and has an unbreakable type skin. But her gifts don’t really come in full force till Fortune. Fortune is the ultimate bad guy. He just doesn’t care about anything but himself. He enjoys his power and at one point, he does the unthinkable.

After the chance meeting with Fortune, Nova becomes sullen. Doesn’t want to do anything, doesn’t want to go anywhere. And eventually makes it her own personal mission to take down Fortune. So that way he can’t hurt anyone else and hopes that he will leave the city.

Supernova, is an incredible story. About determination and self discovery. We never know who we truly are, till were given the opportunity to do so. This story seriously had me on edge. I love when I’m reading and don’t even know how long I’ve been reading, till I glance down and realize the story is going faster than I thought. That’s when you know, you're really reading something good.

Long, has created this world full of powers, danger, heartbreak and love. I’m glad I was given this opportunity to get to know these characters and read their story. Her writing style makes it so easy to jump in and never want to leave.

Overall, I give this book Five Boundless Stars. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment....Lissa

*My Thoughts*

SuperNova is the first installment in Liz Long's Heroes of Arcania trilogy. Meet 17-year old Nova Benson. She of the impenetrable skin, increased strength, speed, and agility. The one her little sister Sterling called SuperNova before she was killed by a villain named Fortune. The one who lives in a town called Arcania which was once a thriving place to live, but now is overrun with criminals and like minded individuals. The one that has hid her abilities from everyone fearing reprisals.

The dedication of this book conveys a fine sentiment. We definitely do need more female superheroes out there.

But do you know what we probably don’t need more of in the YA genre right now? Beautiful blonde heroines who are skinny just because, with gorgeous blue eyes and are so very kind (or so people say despite there being zero evidence of this), and who team up with blinding blond heroes with mesmerising golden-brown eyes that glint and glitter. Just look at that cover. Does it really say blonde teenage heroine to you? Because to be honest I had no idea this was YA when I requested it. Not that that’s a problem, but still, it’s worth noting. It may look and sound like it leans more to NA, but it doesn’t.

Do you know what else we definitely don’t need, in any book in any genre? Racial stereotyping. Race isn’t something that gets mentioned much in this book. In fact the descriptions are pretty sparse throughout, other than Nova being beautiful and having blue eyes, Cole being beautiful and having brown eyes, and the bad guy having nice suits and blue eyes. Which makes it all the more noticeable when colour, race, ethnicity or nationality are raised.

I didn’t take notes, but it stood out to me on six occasions. Two refer to Amber, but I’ll come back to her later as she is a separate issue. One refers to the Chinese man working in the planetarium who speaks in broken English, another is the black prostitute, then there are the Latino teenagers robbing a convenience store, and guess what? That convenience store is run by an Indian man. Offensive, lazy writing. Don’t do this.

Another thing we could have less of is a heroine who basically hates other women. Oh, Nova never says she hates other girls, but she doesn’t exactly think well of them either. The good friend Amber isn’t such a good friend any more, she sort of drifted away over the summer and now is too shallow for Nova, because she just wants to party. She dresses in low cut tops and short skirts, she flirts and eyes up the boys, and despite Nova saying how much she likes Amber, she really doesn’t. Then there’s Penelope, Cole’s sister, who is bitchy and mean and obviously hates Nova as much as Nova dislikes her. Other girls in the book are dismissed with rude comments (Brittany has no brain, but wow, what a nice house;

Positive female friendships are every bit as important as female superheroes. More important, actually, because they’re actually real.

As for the rest of the book, well,

And that was before the vigilante stuff is randomly shoved aside because, oh, this is YA, we must now divert into pointless dating angst in which Nova can feel more mature and superior to her date before acting like a child to make Cole jealous.

No, just plain no. The only good part about that is when Nova takes her date's keys to stop him driving drunk. Look, a positive message! Blink and you will miss it.

As for world-building – there isn’t any. I was expecting a futuristic dystopia, I got high school drama, with a rundown inner city and no sign or mention of life beyond. We’re in the US, but it’s a completely isolated bubble version, in which a gangland criminal like Fortune will take over the city and rob all the banks, but there is zero reaction on a national level.

Judging by the overwhelmingly positive reviews this is receiving on Goodreads, I must have read a different book. Bland characters, empty world, inconsistent powers, offensive stereotypes, to say I was disappointed in this book would be an understatement. The only reason I made it to the end was in the hopes that I was wrong and it would somehow turn itself around. It didn’t, it just hit me with clichés and unlikely scenarios with the villain. Severely disappointed.

3 stars -- I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.

Honestly, I could even go lower to 2.5 stars with this book, but I'm trying to shake off the negativity. This book just wasn't a match for me, and practically right from the start. I can honestly say that I didn't feel any emotion at Starling's death (the little sister from the blurb, not a spoiler). And right there that's not a great sign. I mean, if I'm not tapping into an author's writing enough to feel emotion from a murder of a loved one, then it's probably not a good match. But I hate DNFing ARCs without giving it a fair shake, so I kept going. And quite frankly it didn't pick up for me until around the time Cole appeared in the story and we got his POV. And not because he was necessarily book boyfriend material for me personally, but I thought he was a sweet and genuine person, and there was a bit more intriguing stuff coming into play with more gifted individuals.

So, basically, Nova was a dud for me. On the surface we're told she's going through a lot, and sometimes I definitely felt her despair, but just not as I'd hoped I would I guess. I didn't really appreciate her habit of talking to herself, but that's a Lenore taste thing, not necessarily a bad thing in general. And on a side note, her friendship with Amber confused me. I know she supposedly wasn't as close to her but still liked her and whatnot, but she could be a bit superior in her own head with so much of the high school stuff.

My biggest problem with this story is that it constantly had me furrowing my brow in confusion and disbelief. I do NOT understand the choices that the characters made. I was constantly thinking "Seriously? No one's going to call the police, you're just going to leave?" "Seriously? They have a major encounter with the bad guy, and they just easily run away and then it's like a date and they don't even really look at the news or anything to find out what happened?" Sorry, I'm trying to be somewhat vague so as not to give spoilers, but the sequence of events in the plot just baffled me.

And the PARENTS!!! Yet another story where they exist on the peripheral and just do not come into play basically ever. Her father is a freaking lawyer, and she never updates him on her activities, or asks him how things are going on his end? Cole and Pen's father seems to be in the know on all things gifted, but we NEVER meet him? I mean, I sort of get it, but it was too frustrating to me.

And crap, I've started getting ranty, so I'm going to stop. Because that's so unfair. Basically this one just didn't have enough good stuff sucking me in to want to continue with the series. It was definitely not a match to my reading personality. I will say that I'm glad I continued on and didn't DNF b/c we did get some good stuff (particularly in Cole's POV), and I enjoyed the sweet romance, even if it was a bit slow for my taste. I just wish that someone was there to answer all my questions. :P

SuperNova by Liz Long is the first book in the Heroes of Arcania series. Nova is carrying a lot a guilt over the loss of her sister. It's never easy to lose a loved one, but Nova feels like she could have saved her. Her character was pretty believable, and there was a lot to her. Cole and Pen were interesting as well. Cole had an innocence to him. It was cute. Henry was really the only character I didn't care too much for. He seemed to always be in Nova's business one way or another. You always have to have that one.

There was action, and humor, and twists. SuperNova was definitely entertaining. And what about that Cliffhanger??

The ARC of SuperNova by Liz Long was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Ms Long, I have to take my hat off to you. Your writing levels was on the red carpet, but still allowing your readers the emotional balance of the plot. Especially when Nov lost her little sister. But readers be warned this book is filled with twists and turns that you will not see coming it a screamer !!! The cliffhanger had me wanted to email the author for the next book in this series!!!!

It’s weird that there aren’t more books written about vigilantes, which is odd considering how flooded (some would say oversaturated but I’m not one of them) the market is with superhero stories. Or maybe I’m just not looking in the right places. Nonetheless, Liz Long’s SuperNova is one of those few stories.

In SuperNova, we have the titular character, Nova, having witnessed the murder of her darling little sister at the hands of a monstrous criminal by the name of Fortune. In hindsight, I can see how on the nose that name is… Anyway, the story centers on Nova, as well as the other lead, Cole, as they work together to find and put down/take care of Fortune. But how can teens take down a seasoned criminal who has a superpower? Ah, I forgot to mention that did I? Well, yes, Fortune has a superpower, but he’s not alone. The world is teeming with superpowered individuals, or as Cole refers to them, “gifted.” Oh, and Nova, Cole and his younger sister Penelope are a few of these gifted individuals.

So, we follow Nova, who has an admittedly awesome name, as she stumbles through learning more about herself and her powers, living a double life as a vigilante and experiencing the usual ups and downs of high school, including crushes, jealousy, and of course, love. On top of all that, her purpose in life is to hunt down the man who took her sister from her and bring him to justice, by her own hands. Certainly a cool premise. Sadly, the end result left a bit to be desired.

I’d be lying if I said the approach on the powers of the book weren’t simple, because they are, all the way down to their straightforward and underwhelming names. Still, that’s better than being overly complicated I suppose. Apart from the powers, I can’t say there was much more that stood out. The characters, while entertaining at times, were cliché, one-note and forgettable. I don’t know, it just seems all of them could be summed up in a few words, and I need more than that in a character.

The plot was easy to follow, the pacing mostly steady throughout, and the though the twists weren’t that hard to see coming, I don’t think that this was a bad read. It wasn’t particularly groundbreaking, but I had a good time with it. They aren’t high up on my tbr, but I’ll be getting the sequels in the future.

I love the superhero genre! And I especially love superhero books when they star a strong female heroine, who doesn’t feel the need to wear black leather to emphasize her toughness. Nor does it only have one token female hero who is there for little more than ogling. This is a teen story and can easily be given to a teen audience. It has action for the boys, and dating, boy-crazy hormones, along with a school dance for the girls (though I personally thought the teen drama part droned on a bit long for my tastes). I think teens would especially relate to the coming-of-age, trying to fit in, trying to re-invent themselves (as she goes from a fall of popularity before her sister’s death, to finding herself and making new friends, as well as discovering new things about her powers, where they come from, and how large the world of super-powered people really is), and the whole dating issue. Cole comes off as being a bit effeminate, but personally, I do relate to that shy, quiet, serious type better than other types. I even loved Henry, the Lois Lane investigative reporter. Amber felt rather clichéd as the stereotypical popular girl and Penelope felt rather sparse on personality. I did love that nothing was hidden from Nova’s parents. It felt more believable that they would know, though I am surprised they gave her as much space as they did and weren’t more involved in her life. I tend to fault books in which people keep secrets from each other needlessly, obviously set to cause problems further down the line. I should also warn that this book ends on a cliffhanger. So many of the reviewers nowadays want a full book with an ending to it, with perhaps details to lead to a next book. But in this case considering I did relate to all of the characters, the cliffhanger does what it’s supposed to and it’s got me itching to pick up book 2.

Supernova was a fun YA read for me. It's the story of Nova, a high school senior with special powers, and how she ends up on a vigilante path, meets a boy and starts to uncover a lot of information about herself and her talents that she didn't know. Those are all pretty standard riffs in YA (and superhero) literature, but there were some differences here that I enjoyed — such as Nova's parents knowing about her gifts and the different dynamics that created in the story.

The plot is fast-paced and well-written, and if there's a bit of a repetitive feeling in the middle as teenage vigilantes begin to come into their own, it's at least authentic to the story. The romantic subplot is sweet and endearing but doesn't overtake the larger plot, which I think is a definite plus for this type of book, and the villain is electrifying, even if he doesn't get a lot of time on stage in this book. I think that actually makes him a better bad guy — I'm a sucker for the super powerful but not super present scary presence.

I also enjoyed that Long incorporates some teen subplots and secondary characters and that each one helps steer the main characters in some way.

Who would I recommend this book to? I'd recommend this to fans of young adult contemporary or superhero fiction starting around age 14 and up.

Supernova does end on a major cliffhanger — I actually thought it ended right as it was picking up steam in the best part of the story. I'm looking forward to picking up the next book in the series.

Nova Benson, an Arcania high school student, is big sister to Starling, best friend to Henry, and has teen problems like homework, boy crushes, and hiding a gift she does not want the world to know about.

Not even Henry knows Nova is invulnerable and has super strength. But its all for naught when Nova, Starling, and their dad, the city District Attorney, enter a bank where criminal mastermind, Fortune and his band of thieves are escaping with bags of loot. To make a statement of terror the criminal kills the DA’s youngest daughter with a bolt of electricity discharged from the killer’s hands.

Nova is devastated by the loss of her little sister, but in time revenge becomes Nova’s ambition and a hero is born.

A new family, the Warners, moves into Nova’s neighborhood. Penelope is a junior and brother Cole a senior. They too have extraordinary abilities. Cole is a Timekeeper with the power to stop time while Penelope has the ability to move objects with her mind—telekinesis.

Author Liz Long has a firm understanding of teen angst and hormonal upheavals as she relates Nova and Cole’s story in each character’s voice. Romance between Nova and Cole is written beautifully as is Cole’s role as big brother to troublesome Penelope.

SuperNova: Heroes of Arcania is the first installment to the Heroes of Arcania, a series that consists of three books (so far) following one story arc. YA readers will not be disappointed by this fast-paced, high-octane novel. Its subsequent sequels seem to offer the same sit-at-the-edge-of your-seat action.

First, I am an adult who reads YA and I’m good with that! However, I’m not a big fan of love triangles and drama…I come for the saving the world type stories and, yes, happily-ever-after too.

Liz Long delivers with the start of this superhero series! The characters are fun and there’s just enough teenage angst to draw you in without wearing you out. I do love that girls are in the lead and that there are some darker teases with a bit more vigilante than hero. The plot to find vengeance and defeat evil while hiding your post-curfew activities from your parents is fast-paced and interesting! It is well-written and easy to read which is always a plus. While it is the start of a series, it leaves you with good resolution for the current drama while setting up the next books.

I’ll be reading the next books with high expectations and I recommend you give Book 1 a try today (if superheroes are your thing)!

I received a Reviewer's copy for this but opinions are my own.

At the start, I rolled my eyes because it feels cliché. Villain kills a loved one, main character seeks revenge and a love story thrown in, not to mention the whining angst of a teenager. The night strolls seeking for Fortune are moderately interesting, with a few bumps into his men. This was almost a touch and go story for me.

The story picks up after Henry mentions the witness for the attempted bank robbery and his own investigation into Fortune. Besides, there is still a mystery surrounding Penelope; what did she overhear? Is it bad enough to make her to go to Fortune. Then I am questioning how these people became gifted. Is it really hereditary?

All in all, I love how this story progresses; it begins slowly and warms up to me after. Definitely getting the second book to continue Nova's story.

This is good enough it would get an extra star, except there's way more teen romance than I realized when I bought it, and that's sooo not my genre (so obviously YMMV). Romance aside, this has a good opening (metahuman teen Nova sees her sister murdered by the equally superpowered villain Fortune) and the superhero stuff that follows is good too. The romance, though, bogged it down, but that's more a personal reaction than a flaw. I do wish the book had explained the "gifted" better — there's clearly a reason everyone thinks a particularly character is doomed to turn evil, but I've no idea what it is.

My Thoughts:

With all the negatives we see in our world on a day to day basis, we're in desperate need of heroes. Be them on the big screen, in our books, or in real life, fighting crime to keep us safe, heroes are always needed in our world. I'm a huge superhero fan. I read comics, I've seen all the films, but I've never actually read about any in novel format. I've always been on the side of 'this medium works better visually than mentally'. As much as I love the works of Liz Long, I'll be honest and admit my hesitation in picking up HoA: SuperNova.

Thankfully with Long at the helm, I knew I would get a quality story. And did I ever!

In true superhero fashion, it takes an event to turn a 'super' into a 'hero'. Heroes aren't born, they're created. Sure Nova Benson has always had the Gift of super strength and impenetrable skin, but until her life is stopped in its' tracks, its never been more than a second thought to her. When Fortune arrives in her hometown of Arcania looking for nothing but trouble, Nova's life is forever changed after the death of her kid sister. With a broken heart and full of rage, Nova sets out for revenge. Vowing to stop Fortune before others suffer as she did. Along the way she discovers she may not be the only one hiding gifts. An entire new world opens for Nova, but will her new friends and their combined gifts be enough to stop Fortune and liberate Arcania from his clutches?

Sounds awesome, right? Where are the film rights?

While Liz has already created her entire Gifted universe with the Donovan Circus. She build on that world in some incredible ways with this new series. Fans of Long will recognize the Gifted terminology, while new readers will be excited to learn all about the world that Long has created. Sure our heroes have incredible gifts, but what's the best part about them? They're teenagers! High school-aged, curfew breaking, real-life teenagers! It's so refreshing as a reader to see YA characters actually acting YA age appropriate. Nova, Cole, and Penelope (our heroes) all face real-life challengers in their day-to-day lives and still fight crime by night. It's a testament to the writing talent of Liz Long that she can craft such a creative story, but still make it as realistic as she does. YA readers will strongly relate to these characters and will feel their pain as they journey through their story.

The series has a rather large cast of characters so make sure you're paying attention. In the end, everyone has an important role to play, will you catch on? I also applaud Long for the vast diversity of her characters. We see various age groups, genders, races, ethnicities in this series and that's something to be proud of! Kudos to you Liz Long!

As any good YA series should, SuperNova is full of some extremely hard hitting themes that will leave the reader with a lot to reflect upon. Themes of love, family, loss, responsibility, good vs evil, and judgement are all present in this series. It's really an incredible story that will leave you with that satisfied feeling down in your bookish heart. And it only gets better with each installment!

SuperNova ends on quite the cliffhanger that will leave readers begging for book two. Thankfully, we won't have to wait long as Long is rapid releasing the entire series this summer to make sure all her readers are satisfied! I know this series will be one that's discussed for many years to come. It's got everything you'd look for in a superhero series: heroes that slay, villains that are truly evil, and even a touch of that YA romance that readers love! Seriously folks, this series is off to an incredible start and it's only going to get better from here.

The perfect series for readers of all genres, HoA: SuperNova is sure to please. While the general tone is definitely YA, it is safe enough for younger readers while being satisfying to older readers of any age. Only mild language, no gore, and no sexual content, but there's all kind of action-packed awesome within these pages, plus some instances of teenagers being teenagers!

As you can see, I was clearly a huge fan of Heroes of Arcania: SuperNova and I am so glad I have the opportunity to share these thoughts with you all. I am so excited to be granting HoA: SuperNova a well-deserved, near-perfect 5-star review. I highly recommend this series to all fans of sci-fi, paranormal, or superheros. Add this series to your TBR today!

Reader thoughts: To put it bluntly, this superhero tale didn't live up to its potential. And the character didn't, either.

First, there was nothing novel in this story. Nova had little personality aside from grieving over her sister and wanting vengeance against Fortune.

Quote: "My thoughts were no longer boys and parties; I wanted Fortune's blood on my hands." I liked that about her, although she still thought more about boys and parties than she needed to.

There was a party. There were drunk teens. It was dumb. At least Nova was normal/wise enough to realize that it was dumb. Then why did she go??

The save-her-from-a-runaway-car scene (exposing Cole's powers!) was downright cliche, but there was a very good line afterward. No, two.

Quotes: "Nova hadn't saved him because of who he was; she'd saved Andy because that's who she was."
"Maybe he'd even saved me because he liked me. God, I hope he isn't a vampire."

I like the powers. They were clear and limited. The neatest thing, though, was that Nova couldn't feel pain, and that wasn't expanded on at all. She kept saying things like, "That didn't hurt," but how would she know what it felt like? Then, at the end, she said something about "aching" describing the only pain she'd ever felt. Um, really? How would she know how to categorize it? She's never felt pain before!

There were a lot of scenes where Nova or Cole or Pen could have used their gifts and didn't. They kept chasing after Fortune but not doing anything when they found him. Like, "Oh, yeah, you're scary. I'll run away now instead of trying to fight you off, even though I've been searching for you for months." Three times.

I like Henry, an earnest and good friend who puts up with too much. Nova keeps yelling at him for dumb things that he does to cheer her up, though, which just makes me care about her less.

Nova's relationship with her parents is okay. It's pretty removed but doesn't make them sound absent. They care, but they seem to forget about her. Her mom did take her shopping.

The "We have to catch Fortune red-handed because else they'll never be able to convict him" was just dumb reasoning. All it did was put innocent people in danger. Better to nail the bad guy and find evidence to convict him rather than wait for him to attack and risk him killing people and getting away. Again. Argh!

Writer thoughts: There were lots of minor grammar issues. Nearly every compound sentence was missing a comma. That's probably three or four missing commas per screen page. It's an issue I can ignore, but it's still amateur.

You know it's a problem when the reader can imagine ways for the good guys to win, and the good guys aren't trying/considering those. That happened too often in this book. "Fear" and "just lost concentration" only works as an excuse so many times.

As I read The Reality Bug, I knew how the good guys were going to win and save the planet. Then, the good guys did NOT do it, and the bad guys won (sorry to give away the minor spoiler, but it happens in books sometimes). This put a sour taste in my mouth for the entire series.

As I read The Mage of Trelian, I had the perfect idea for the climactic moment against the bad guys. It also did not happen, and the actual climax was dull in comparison (in my mind).

Now, I love it when authors astound me with their brilliance beyond mine, but it has to be as good or better than whatever the reader can imagine. So, authors, we can either step up our game or wecan cater to unimaginative readers.

You know how in the recent years both Tv and Movies are all about superheroes? Well I have to say that I am liking them in books more. A friend and I were going over the movies we needed to watch and I had still yet to go see the third X Men movie. I saw the Captain America one fairly quickly after release and as usual we were debating that I loved Marvel movies better than the DC Comics ones, but DC did a fab job on regular television. We are not discussing the ones on Netflix, that is different.
I have always liked those movies and shows and to be honest, I have never ever read the comic books. So lore wise, I know nothing (worse than Jon Snow). But it doesn’t stop me from enjoying them, and more recently to enjoy them in proper books.
Looking back since I started this blog, I was given the chance to review Blood Surfer, then came The Halfling and now my darling we have SuperNova! Can I just say that those books are awesome and Supernova is way way out there in terms of pace, action, characters, drama… let’s see the book has it all and so much more!
Let’s see, it all starts with pretty much a tragedy!
This one really sucks and is quite upsetting actually and it makes you empathise with Nova our main girl very quickly and easily. But, and you knew there was a but coming she is not like the rest of her family, Nova is “gifted” and it is pretty much a secret, no one knows not even her best friend Henry that she has been besties with her whole life.
I did say there was a but, though it fact it is a big BUT!
Enters into the picture yummy Cole and his sister and well…
I really do not want to say too much, but based on the cover and the blurb, you have already tons of info to make you guys happy!
I loved Nova and Cole, they are typical teenagers and yet they are more. Nova is the more complex one of course since she lost her little sister, grew up differently due to her gifts and had to keep them a secret from anyone who isn’t her direct family. Plus now we have the added layer of revenge/justice however you want to see it and the discovery that she is not alone.
Cole is different, he has know what he was and grew up with that understanding, though it has also to remain hidden, it was not the same thing for him, plus he likes our Nova and that makes him A Okay in my book.
The building of their friendship and relationship was really nicely done and at the right pace, even with sister’s interference and Henry’s.
The part most annoying is the end, we ended on a cliffhanger and those have a way to be irritating because I lack the patience to wait and I always want to know what happens next.
I have not mentioned our resident super evil baddie Fortune, a nasty piece of work and just as I like them super easy to hate. But there is something going on there behind the mischief he does and the secrecy he keeps. Oops I may not have told you that he too is gifted.
The good news is that we know there are 3 books to the series and now I only pray that we do not have to wait overly long to get some answers.
Supernova was action-packed, exciting and really well written. The characters are so vivid and very lovable. I am sure you will be falling in love with them just like I did.
Plus, did book did make me want to have a superpower too, so if you are like me and love all these kinds of movies and tv shows or even comic books, this is the one for you.
Now all I need to know is the release date for book 2 and be begging for a copy (pretty please dear Liz) and be able to tell you more and more! If I get more news and updates, I will make sure to update the post for you all, in the meantime you have Supernova to read!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I read the first two books in this series back to back, so I had to go back and look at my notes to write this review. Let me just warn you folks, this first chapter was a tough one for me. Right from the beginning, Long rips your heart out, shreds it, lights it on fire and dashes on its ashes. But in the very best way. You see, Long has the uncanny ability to write characters you care about. Bad guys, good guys, those characters that are only in the book for one chapter. Of course this also means that when she George R. R. Martin’s those characters, it’s… I’m reading the third book now, and I had to set it down earlier this week. That’s how it is.

But now that I’ve spilled my heart ache on you… (A little club soda will get that right out, don’t worry)

In SuperNova, Long brings us back to her Gifted world. This time we’re not going to the circus, though, we’re going to high school. And I know that sounds like a nightmare straight out of your childhood (oh did you think you were getting cotton candy? SURPRISE, YOU GET CARDBOARD PIZZA AND POP QUIZZES) Long does not disappoint. Nova is an unbreakable who doesn’t even know other people like her exist (just that she’s weird) until she runs across another gifted. This one a super criminal with a major chip on his shoulder. A chance meeting that changes the course of both their lives. It addresses the question of what would you do if you had powers? Would you do nothing and keep your head down, become a villain, or take the hard road and become a hero?

Nova embodies the good in us all without being infallible or impossibly perfect. She’s what I like to imagine I’d be if I was faced with her gift. And while she might struggle and falter, she stays the course. Even when it’s hard. Basically, she’s my hero.

I adore this world, possibly even more than Gifted, and can’t imagine a better summer read for super hero fans.

I just realized I spent this entire review fangirling over Nova and missed talking about her father, Cole, Pen, Henry, Fortune, and Soccer Dad… This is awkward. Here, let me do a quick rundown.

· Nova’s dad: Nova’s dad is strong, cool, confident, and supports Nova every step of the way. I picture him as Idris Elba, even though the character was white. He’s Idris Elba cool.

· Cole: You know those jokes where people would cut pictures out of a magazine to form a picture of their perfect partner? Cole is that, but for leading men. Strong and supportive without being overly alpha male. Smart without being unfailingly correct. Flawed and perfect because of it. I really loved Cole. But like a brother. He’s perfect for Nova and I want to smoosh his cheeks to death.

· Penelope: If Nova is who I want to be, Pen is who I actually would be. Impetuous with a selfish streak. Girl’s got a good heart, she just seems to forget that little fact.

· Henry: God save me from the nerdy best friend. They’re my kryptonite.

· Fortune: God, I hate Fortune. With a burning, fiery passion. I don’t think I’ve hated a villain Long’s created more than Fortune. Ever.

· Soccer Dad: And this would be who I was after being impetuous got me in trouble. A former criminal who doesn’t want to do wrong but can’t do right. Ugh, I love Soccer Dad. He’s probably my favorite supporting character. I’d totally wear a Soccer Dad t-shirt and buy his pop vinyl.

NOW! SuperNova is the perfect summer superhero read. Check it out and get in on the ground floor of an amazing new series.

An ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This review originally appears on my blog, PopCrunchBoom Books

3.5/5 stars

SuperNova follows Nova, a seventeen-year-old girl living in Arcania. She has always been a bit different and while her parents warned her about sharing her "special abilities" with the world, Nova was content to remain a "normal" teenage girl. However, after a tragic event early on within the novel, Nora's world shifts. She's no longer thinking about boys and prom, but about her struggles to overcome the guilt, sadness and anger she has been feeling since the event took place. Then an idea begins to form in her mind. Maybe her special powers can take town the evil person who cause so much tragedy not only in her life, but in the town of Arcania. Throw in a new cute boy who's moved into town and Nora has a whole new mission for senior year.

I loved Nora as a character. Long did a great job of balancing her "teenageness" with her "superpowers." I felt like I connected with Nora and I sympathized with her plight. And while I lent some disbelief when it came to her parents and their role in her new "hobbies," I still felt that Nora's storyline was believable and that she rang true as a character.

Long does a great job of setting up the scene in true superhero story fashion. The storyline had some cliche moments, but most superhero stories do. I was immersed in the superhero world that Long had created. Long also did a great job of creating the villain within this story. As everyone knows, a superhero needs a great villain and vice versa. With that said, I think his superhero name (and some of the other bad guys' names) was a bit cheesy. Thought to be fair, some superhero stories are like that and it could just be a throwback to superheroes stories being like that.

While, Nora's character was very well developed, I felt that Cole's character was missing something. I feel like his chapters could have been more on point and his character a bit more fleshed out. He seemed confusing at times as a character. I think moving forward he could be a really strong character.

Speaking of Cole, I really enjoyed his sister Penelope. I think she's a very intriguing character and I can't wait to find out more about her and what happens next in regards to her storyline.

Overall, the story was a quick and entertaining read. It had some hiccups for me, but I'm going to chalk it up to being an ARC copy. I'm interested to see what happens next in the sequel. If you want to give a YA female superhero story a try, then I'd definitely suggest you check out this gem!

Really?!? Full review coming soon, but for now, that's all I got. o.O

You know that you're in trouble when you are reduced to tears in a book before you even finish the first chapter. I mean, what kind of author attempts to emotionally break you before you even get to know the characters? An evil author, that's who... kinda makes you wonder which side of the villain/hero fence Liz Long would fall if she was a citizen of Arcania, doesn't it?

As you probably gathered, SuperNova started with a very intense 'bang' and it really never slowed down from there. Nova was one of those characters that you can't help but like. She had a power that she couldn't explain, parents who loved her and a little sister who treated her like a hero. Once tragedy struck, nothing was the same. Nova shut down and closed herself off from pretty much everyone, yet she had one good friend who didn't give up on her. I loved Henry for the most part, but even he had his limits... and his weaknesses.

Then there was Cole. He and his sister Penelope shared their own secrets. They were a part of a world that Nova had no idea existed, even though she was a part of it.

There were some surprising twists, secrets revealed and some still kept close. There were also a few unanswered questions that I hope get answered sooner rather than later... which reminds me... did I mention the CLIFF HANGER?? The fate of more than one character is left hanging in the balance at the end of SuperNova. It's a good thing that Fortune's Favor is scheduled to release in July.

If you haven't read any other books by Liz Long, SuperNova is a good place to start. While you're waiting for the next book's release you can check out her Donovan Circus series, which starts with Gifted. You can also learn more about the Heroes of Arcania on the trilogy's website.

I received SuperNova in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I've been a Liz Long fan since picking up A Reaper Made at the end of 2014. Gifted, Book 1 in the Donovan Circus Series, ended up being one of my top reads of 2015. So when I heard about the Heroes of Arcania series I knew I had to read it right away. I was thrilled to get an ARC of SuperNova. Here's why I loved this book.

First off: Superheroes. But yet normal people at the same time. Normal high schoolers. I loved that Nova didn't quite realize how special she was. She was a fabulous character--strong, determined, brave. The boy she meets at school, Cole, and his sister are well-developed characters and play off of each other and Nova extremely well. Which brings me to point 2.

Second: The best build up to a high school relationship, or really any relationship, I have ever seen. It was one of those things you want to happen, but both are hesitant because of their own secrets, so despite the instant attraction they have, the relationship builds. You see all of the butterflies and the doubt and the aww moments that come from two people getting to know each other and falling for one another. It's awesome.

Third: The villain is complex. His motives aren't quite clear. His background is unknown. He's not afraid to be a major bad guy...he doesn't pull his punches.

I've had to make the pedestal I put awesome books upon bigger so that I could place this one upon it. I loved this book. It was a fast-paced read that I couldn't put down. All of the components from characters to setting to plot came together so well. I can't wait to see how all of them come back together in Book 2.

*Thank you to Liz Long for an e-ARC of this book. It in no way shaped my opinion of the story.*

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was emotional, the beginning brought tears to my eyes, especially since the readers get to spend some time with Nova’s little sister before she loses her.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this book and I can’t help but think that all fantasy young adult books should be written like this. There was high school drama but the plot was still in the forefront, the drama just helped to keep the story relatable to its intended young audience and I applaud the author in how she pulled it off.

I felt connected to the characters and I loved that the POV’s would switch from Nova to Cole, giving the readers insight to how they were both feeling, especially when coming to terms with how they felt about each other. Along with the high school drama, that also kept the story relatable, I know I’ve dealt with that when I was younger.

That twist at the end was something that I didn’t see coming, I mean I knew something was coming but I didn’t expect that to happen.

The ending was great, such a superhero ending and the cliffhanger got me excited for more. I even took a sneak peek at the first chapter of the next book, which I don’t usually like to do, and that didn’t disappoint either, keeping it a suspenseful cliffhanger to excite readers and get them ready for the second book.

I’m highly excited to see where this is going and I am very thankful to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I would highly recommend this to teens, young adults, young girls looking for a teen female superhero who can kick butt and even adults who are young at heart. Mark your calendars for June 16th, readers!

Thank you for reading my review.

The first thing I have to say about this book is how unique it is! I have never come across a book quite like this before! I really enjoyed reading this book and I would love to read more of this series in the future!
I enjoyed the storyline in the book, it comes across as a fun read although it does have some serious and heart-wrenching moments filled t and with hard emotions.
I really enjoyed reading about Nova's character, this book takes her on a personal journey, you see her developing from the beginning, right through to the end of the book, she changes and matures, however I wont say too much as I wouldn't want to ruin the surprises that fills this book for anyone.
This book is filled with secrets, some you find out about and some you don't..... keeping you guessing and needing to read on in the series. This book does keep you guessing the whole way through, especially at the end, once I read the full book all I wanted to do was read the next book, the end was really really good! I definitely want to read more of this series and of this authors work as the world building, the plot and the way the characters are written in a very "real" way but filled with imagination, a hard combination but Liz Long manages to pull this off perfectly!
After reading this book I would definitely recommend this book and this author!

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

I really liked the premise of the book. A girl going after a Big Bad that’s been terrorizing the city AND killed her little sister. It was so sad 😭 But idk, it was kinda underwhelming overall.

I did like the superhero aspect. The world isn’t full of superheroes, but there are some people here and there with hidden powers. Nova’s skin is pretty impenetrable. Then we got two new kids, Cole and Penelope. Cole can control time and his sister has telekinesis. And together they go out at night and kick bad guy ass. Lol. One thing I liked is that her dad was in on this vigilante stuff. I mean, I guess not into it into it, since he’s a DA, but at least he was aware of what was going on with Nova. This is so different from what usually goes on in a YA novel.

But idk, I just wasn’t that super into this book. The characters were kinda blah. And because we got so much Nova POV in the beginning, every time we switched to Cole I got confused before I remembered the dual POV. The ending was... wow. A character made a very interesting choice that made absolutely no sense. I don’t know why, but I just didn’t really vibe with the book. It was just... fine.

Thanks to Netgalley for giving me an ARC of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. No compensation was given, offered, or taken to alter the opinion.

This is my second book by Liz Long and let me just say that I am in love with her books! All of Liz's books are original and make such entertaining reads. I really enjoy Liz's writing style. It's simple and clean which makes for easy and fast reading because you aren't boggled down in "flowery" writing. Another thing that I like about Liz's books is that multiple age groups can read them. Younger readers can read them because her writing is simple and clean, yet older young adult readers can read this and not feel like they're reading a "kiddie" book. I really liked the concept of this book. A story about superheroes, what's not to like?? Liz has created a unique world with people who have special gifts and plot twists that you will not see coming! I loved that our heroine Nova is brave and tough, even after everything she's been through. She doesn't need a white knight to save her. That cliffhanger at the end!! How can you leave us hanging like that Liz?! I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series! Don't miss out on this fantastic read!

Nova was a not-so-ordinary high school student whose younger sister, Starling, called her SuperNova. Well, she definitely is super given that she is an Unbreakable. No matter how much stupid she did as a child, she did not get hurt or break bones.

Nova's father is the assistant district attorney in Arcania. He takes his daughters with him to the bank after work. Little does he know that they are walking in on a bank robbery by the villain, Fortune, and his minions.

Fortune is also gifted with the ability to control electricity. He uses this gift to kill Starling right in front of Nova, who froze and could not help her sister. Of course, if she had, she might also have been killed or severely injured since Fortune's gift does have the ability to hurt Nova.

Soon, Nova starts her senior year of high school where she meets the new students, Cole and Penelope, siblings who are also gifted. Nova, Cole, and Pen work together to find Fortune to end his reign of terror in Arcania.

I highly recommend that you read the book to find out the rest of the story.

Liz Long, the author, is also gifted,...with the ability to write her imagination into excellent books. I recommend all her books.
