Elizabeth is at a crossroad. Will rumschpringe lead her away? Or bring her home?

She's been given the chance to experience life outside of her community, away from the responsibility to care for her eight younger siblings, but Elizabeth Bontrager can't decide which road to take. Goshen has its charms and pressures, but Paradise, Pennsylvania, sounds . . . well, like paradise. And it's also home to her Englisch friend, Paula. Decision made. Elizabeth is Paradise bound.

But will the small town live up to its name? When Elizabeth meets Paula's friend, Bruce, she quickly learns he wants more than a friendship. And the same might be true of Saul Miller, her new boss at the country story that sells Amish products to the Englisch community. As the two compete for her attention, Elizabeth is surprised to realize she misses her family and becomes even more uncertain about where she belongs. She has a choice to make: return home or embrace this new life and possibly a new love?

The bus trip to Paradise, Pennsylvania was long and terrifying to Elizabeth Bontrager who questioned her decision to run away from her large family. She was weary of her life as the eldest of eight siblings always “needed” by her mamm to care for them. Work, work, work, with no promise of a life of her own in Goshen, Indiana. She was uncomfortable with the strangers on the bus, especially the Englischers until a young Amish man Saul Miller comes to her rescue and soothes her fears, especially when she learns he is also traveling to his home in Paradise. WOW, what a hook! Author Barbara Cameron caught my attention immediately and I kept reading in fascination.

Ms. Cameron’s story of Elizabeth is so unlike other Amish stories I have read. She presented completely different aspects to the Amish/Englischer co-existence that were thought provoking, amusing, and complicated. Elizabeth was beginning a new life, learning astounding, perplexing, and comical details about the Englisch lifestyles living with roommate Paula, who is a harmonious helpmate for Elizabeth, aiding her to understand many things about the Englischer life in Paradise. Paula is waiting the return of her soldier boyfriend from Afghanistan.

Saul Miller is on the rebound from a serious romantic relationship, and Elizabeth has not known romantic love prior to meeting Saul. Will she realize genuine love when she is confronted with the emotion? Consequently, enters Bruce, an Englischer that showers Elizabeth with compliments and attention. Is Bruce a likely candidate for romance or is he really who he seems to be? Elizabeth’s first job came too easy when Saul employed her in his family’s business. We learn that Elizabeth is gifted with a talent for sewing. She dreams of a future working with fabrics and design. Saul is patient with Elizabeth, hoping she will return his romantic feelings toward her. Ms. Cameron’s story left a new impression of Amish romance with me, and one I like immensely with respect for the challenges 20 year old Elizabeth faced and overcame. There is no question that God was nearby through His Holy Spirit – always a present help.

A Road Unknown speaks of the many pathways in life that each individual follows. Skillfully written lexes specific in particulars about the Amish culture in today’s world embellishes Barbara Cameron’s lovely story of a young woman’s prayers being blessed with answers by God. Elizabeth discovers surprising findings of unknown family, new friends, and love in Paradise. Paradise is not lost and Elizabeth’s future is full of promise in Paradise. Ms. Cameron brilliantly ended the story at the perfect time, leaving this reader wanting more. At least I hope she intends a sequel to A Road Unknown so we can learn of God’s plans for the residents of Paradise….the one here on earth that is.

This book grabs you from the very beginning. You’re wondering why Elizabeth is leaving her family. How does she know the Englisch friend she is going to live with? These questions do get answered but more and more get uncovered. I tore through this book and enjoyed it greatly.

It’s interesting to read about how Saul and his family have created a good living with their gift shop. At one point, Elizabeth examines the goods for sale from local Amish people and thinks about how many of the items are just parts of what the Amish do in their regular lives, not necessarily goods to be admired and sold. What we look at as beautifully hand-crafted is just another part of how they live.

I was also grabbed by the fact that Elizabeth’s grandmother seemed to call the shots in her family. I feel like I might have missed that story from another of Cameron’s series; I could definitely use a bit of background on that family dynamic. However, it is not really necessary to understand that Elizabeth wants a life of her own.

I would like to read more about Saul and Elizabeth and how they make a life together. I’d like to know how they integrate their differences in world views and how they interact with the modern world.

I received a copy of this book in order to provide a review. All thoughts are my own.

3 A Road Unknown Stars

This is not my normal category to say the least, I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either.

The story line was really quiet good but it was a little long and a little dull for me. If you break it down not much really happens but you do see the relationship between Saul and Elizabeth grow and those parts were interesting.

I liked getting to see Elizabeth grow up and put herself forward first and stand up for herself. Right from the beginning you know she isn’t a push over and is done with people telling her what to do.

I guess I just wished Saul had gotten his head out of his a - r - s - e just a little earlier because when they did come together it felt rushed to get to the end.

The narrator was ok, I didn’t really feel much emotion in her voice it was all kind of monotone to me. I found myself with my headphones off and doing something else then being like oh right the book. And I think a great narrator can make you be interested in a book even if the story isn’t really there.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

I enjoyed going with Elizabeth on her journey. She basically jumped on a bus after some quick good-byes to family, and ventured into the unknown to start living her own life. She meets Saul in a sweet way, and they slowly build a friendship as a foundation for something more. Paula is one of my favorite characters- what a loyal and supportive friend through all of the transition Elizabeth goes through. The message that God watches over each of us was inspirational.

This was a book that I won from Good Reads and I'm very grateful to have won it. It was an OK book, but I was disappointed with the ending. The friendship between the main Amish character, Elizabeth and her Englisch friend, Paula was endearing and I also loved Saul. It could have been so much better if the writer would have gone into more detail regarding Elizabeth's parents and also that is where it seemed to be rushed in the end of the book. All in all I did enjoy it.

I always enjoy reading the stories that reflect some of the Amish way of life - and this one was no different. I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters and couldn't wait to find out how it ended. I would recommend to those who enjoy a light-hearted Amish romance.

This was a good break book. To me the plot lacked something and I can’t put my finger on what. The characters could be more developed. I don’t know the probably of an Amish girl rooming with an English girl in a modern apartment?

I hope Elizabeth's parents know why she left home and don't make their other children feel the same way. She missed her childhood and became their maid. I am glad she found true love.

My Review:
Elizabeth is at that age in the Amish way of life, where the young person is given a chance to experience life outside the Amish rules and regulations. And even though some parts of that are freeing to her a lot of it is sort of scary. So Elizabeth is at a crossroad in her life is the English way of life going to cause her to run from her Amish upbringing or will she return to the only life she has ever known?

I being the baby of the family have never known what it was like to be the main caretaker of my siblings. That was something my older siblings had to take on even as children. With that being said I really couldn't relate to the main character but I do see a lot of my oldest child in her character. My daughter feels the need to get out of caring for her three siblings. And my husband and I realize that we rely on her quite a bit, so we try to let her do things on her own when we are able.

Too me no matter how much Elizabeth felt that she was just a burned out caretaker, she should of never left her family behind like that. Self-discovery is a hard thing when you are young especially when you can look back as an adult and see the mistakes you made. At first things seem to be tipping in Elizabeth's favor but its not long before she misses home. This is the first book in the series so it leaves you to wonder how this will all play out in the long run.

If she ever wants a future, she will have to return home to resolve the issues from her past. Elizabeth Bontrager had run away from home even though she was twenty-years-old. She needed a break from being the oldest of nine children and having all the responsibility of helping to care for her brothers and sister was simply more than could handle. It was rapidly changing her outlook on what marriage and having her own family should look like, and now it was the furthest thing from her mind. Even though she was still in her rumschpringe, a period of deciding whether she wanted to be baptized into the Amish faith or walk away, she figured out some distance is what is needed to help her decide.

Only she didn't plan on fate intervening on a bus headed for Paradise, Pennsylvania as Saul Miller took a seat beside her. She had no plans to have a conversation with him and simply wanted to be left alone with her thoughts, but Saul had other things in mind. He wanted to know what someone as beautiful as Elizabeth would leave home if she wasn't taking vacation or enjoying her rumschpringe the way most Amish do. It seemed to Saul that she was running away from something and he hoped he might convince her to let him help in any way he could. Even if it was simply sharing a Big Mac and fries on the bus to Paradise.

Elizabeth plans to stay with her English friend Paula who is attending college to become a nurse and has offered Elizabeth a place to stay. When Paula learns that Elizabeth can cook, the agree to deal where Elizabeth will do the cooking and Paula will pay for the groceries. Now all Elizabeth has to do is find a job in Paradise. But with limited skills working in a fabric store in Goshen, she isn't sure it will be that easy, until fate plays its hand again. She literally is given a job at a country store selling Amish products while Miriam goes on maternity leave for a couple months. Guess who her employer is? Yup Saul Miller. Now it seems God has more in store for Elizabeth and Saul as they realize that all roads to the future lie where God guides.

I received A Road Unknown by Barbara Cameron compliments of Abingdon Press and Litfuse Publicity. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed are strictly my own. This is the first novel in the Amish Roads Series, from Barbara Cameron and I LOVED it. I always wondered if the Amish oldest girls often got tired of the weight of helping raise children and what would they do, how would they act. I think Barbara captured this very essence in Elizabeth's character. In no way was she disrespectful to her parents but simply looked for a breather to gain the right perspective. I love how Saul enabled her to see things clearly in the end and can't wait for the next novel in this series. I think it's going to be a favorite of mine. There is a readers discussion guide at the end along with a sneak peek at Crossroads, the next novel in this series. I personally give this one a 5 out of 5 stars!

WOW! Barbara is such a wonderful author.

I haven’t actually read any of her other Amish novels but after reading this one, I will be!

I have read a story or two of hers from collaborations and they were wonderful but they could not have prepared me for what unfolded in “A Road Unknown”.

So few authors are able to capture the essence of something that is totally or even mostly foreign to them but Barbara Cameron does it beautifully.

At least, I hope so… I would hate to think that Barbara herself experienced the same things her main character in “A Road Unknown” has. But if she didn’t, you would never know it because From her masterful writing, you’re certain she has.

She brings us right into Elizabeth’s world. From the first paragraph, I was hooked. Barbara Cameron captured me and I’m certain I’m not the only one. We are immediately pulled into the story and it doesn’t let go of us until we’ve turned the last page.

It’s a great book and I am already looking forward to the next one! Of course, it doesn’t hurt that there’s an excerpt of book 2 – right there in the back of book 1.

It’s so exciting to find a wonderful new series from an author who – then becomes one of your favorites. And I have to admit, I’m excited I can go back and read more about some of the characters I’ve “met” who were already introduced in her earlier series – at least it will give me something to do while I’m waiting for book 2 in this series.

One thing I’m noticing more and more in Amish fiction is the reliance on cell-phones and characters who do not shun technology but are extremely cautious in it’s use. I used to think this was inaccurate but the more I am getting to know people in Amish communities (not fictional) and the more I read other books with this as part of the story, the more I am convinced that Amish communities are embracing cell-phone technology. And it makes sense to me when I stop and think about it too. They hold themselves apart so a cell-phone with no contract (one of those pay-by-the-month deals) would actually be better and easier than having the Englisch install phone shanties all over their community.

I love when you read a book, and get a fresh perspective on something, don’t you?

Well “A Road Unknown” is full of fresh perspectives. It gives us a look into Amish life from a perspective that most people would never even consider. It gives us a deeper feel for the difficulties that these wonderful people who live “plain” endure – and not just from their simple lives either.

And I love that it gives a whole new perspective on being a young woman in a tough situation. Amish or not, there are many girls who have been in the exact same position that Elizabeth was in and I believe this book will touch the hearts of Amish fans and non-Amish fans!

If you enjoy Amish fiction at all, do NOT miss this book!

Elizabeth doesn't just take an unknown road in this book, but a most unique one, as well! Forget trying to decide if she's going to be Amish or English - she's going to live Amish but in an English house and work in an Amish business and date both Amish and English! While it might sound confusing, it really wasn't - but the reader definitely hops between both worlds.

Yet it was really a fun read. Elizabeth doesn't spend as much time mentally trying to figure out her life spiritually or philosophically as she does just taking the next logical step. Because these steps have put her in a rather unusual predicament, watching her navigate the sideways current makes for a great story.

Elizabeth was definitely someone I'd like to get to know, but Saul Miller, on the other hand, is a bit different. At first he sounds like a 'player,' the kind of guy whom you'd really want to see put in his place. As time passes, however, he comes across as a guy who has his head on straight but has just now figured out what he wants - and is going after it.

I flew through this book. It's an easy read, pretty light-hearted and smoothly written. With such likeable characters and a flickering romance, you can't help but want to see a happily-ever-after at the end of the book, and Cameron won't disappoint you.

I was so excited to see this new book by Barbara Cameron, my favorite author of Amish fiction, and even more thrilled to find that I would be returning to Paradise in this novel! Miss Cameron always writes with heart, warmth, and values, and this story was no different.
This story grabbed me from the first page, watching a young woman who had missed out on the life that most people take for granted in order to help her mother with her siblings, break out on her own in order to discover her true path. It was interesting seeing how Elizabeth adjusted to life with an English roommate, while holding tight to the values and the person that she is, and I love the mentions of familiar characters from the Quilts of Lancaster County and Stitches in Time Series! My favorite aspect of this book was the repeating theme of the sparrow (His eye is on the sparrow) which served as a good reminder for me personally.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever struggled with difficult life choices, or who just wants a book that will touch their heart and make them feel good.

I know I know another Amish fiction review but I couldn't help it. I loved this story from beginning to end.

Elizabeth is struggling, she has a decision to make. The book starts with Elizabeth on a bus making a drastic change in her life. We all come to a time in our life when we have to make a decision, stay where we feel comfortable or reach out into the unknown. Elizabeth has a unique opportunity she has the chance to live in both worlds for a time. While leaving her hometown she meets a good Amish boy and well it adds a great mix to the plot. Moving in with her pen-pal Paula causes a little quite a stir in Elizabeth's family. Suddenly living a modern house, with electricity, telephones, and television becomes very inciting. There are choices to be made, and priorities found.

I stayed up till about 1am to finish this book, I loved it. It was nice having an Amish girl living in the English world, most books that I read are the other way around. If you like Amish fiction this is one you should read.

I was given a copy of this book from the Litfuse Publicity Group however the thoughts and opinions are my own.

What is there to do, when your growing up and life is passing you by? You cannot complain, you must honor your parents. You spend your time taking care of little ones, you are the oldest in the family of eight children.
This is the reality of the world that Elizabeth Bontrager lives in. So what does she do?? What you would expect anyone who is an adult and overwhelmed would do...she runs away!
We follower her and her experiences with freedom. She could go either way...wild, or keep her faith! You will love some of her experiences in the kitchen..need dishes washed?? Ha Ha!!
I loved her room mate, she wasn't what I was expecting. I thought she would be encouraging her to leave her faith. I also enjoyed Saul, and the community. Made me want to move there! There is sure a lot happening here, and Elizabeth does play a big part.
Will she give up and move back? Or will she leave and become English? Or is there something all together else in store for her. Enjoy being absorbed into this book, and hope you love your time here, as I did!

My Thoughts On The Book: This was my first book by Barbara Cameron so I had no clue what to expect. I found the basic storyline quite inviting and there was a fresh and different look at traditional Amish fiction I've read in the past. The story moved along at a good pace and the characters were very intereting. I loved the theme of following God's plan for your life. All in all this novel should appeal to all fans of Amish fiction. They will surely find enjoyment in this story. I cannot wait to read, Crossroads, the next book in the series. I enjoyed the little snippet of the second in the series at the end of the book and the discussion questions were quite thought provoking.

How many of us have felt weighed down by responsibilities of the home as young people? We may want our own home some day but not as a teen. We may want to run around and have fun like the Englisch friends we see, if we are an Amish teen who is expected to care for many younger siblings as well as household duties. Elizabeth feels this way and just can't take it anymore. She feels God leading her to leave Indiana and move to Paradise to stay with her Englisch friend, Paula. She hops on a bus and heads off to create her own destiny, her own world, without all the burdens her parents place on her. I loved this book. Elizabeth is refreshing in her honesty and desire to do what is right. I thoroughly enjoyed observing the workings of an Amish shop and the differences between the Indiana Amish and the Amish of Paradise, Pennsylvania. Read this delightful book to find out if Elizabeth succeeds in making her own way. Will she find love and happiness along the way? or will she be forced to return to Indiana? 5 Stars!!!!

"A Road Unknown"is the first book in Barbara Cameron's Amish Road Series. There are some characters from her series"A Stitch In Time". I really liked this book and especially liked these two quotes from the book"Supper's not just about eating. It's also about enjoying family and making memories." and" Sometimes when we let go and stop trying to tell Him what's best for us we find it, eh?" I just felt there was so much truth in those two statements.
Elizabeth Bontrager is tired of not being able to go to singings or have any fun because she has to take care of her eight younger siblings. She leaves to go Paradise, Indiana because it is well, Paradise.
On the bus she meets Saul. Then she meets Bruce through her English friend Paula. Both Saul and Bruce want to get to know her more. Which one is the right one for her?
There are a couple of fun scenes in this book that I literally laughed out loud reading them.
This is a fun read and even through it is Amish I didn't feel it was the average Amish story! I have book 2 and book 3 in my to be read pile.
I am giving this book four stars.

This was actually the first book I read by Barbara Cameron! Once I did, I was immediately hooked and we hurriedly purchased many of her other books. We didn’t realize until we began reading them that the three series we purchased were all connected, not only the characters but the communities as well.

I really identified with Elizabeth, being expected to do all the chores that no one else wanted to do. I’m not sure how realistic the story is of her parents not allowing her to date or go to the young people’s fellowships, as they kept her busy with chores and caring for her younger brothers and sisters.

But the story grabbed me and I could barely put down the book until I was finished with it. This was another story that involved a situation that could have been described as abusive, in that the daughter was totally controlled by her parents, without any love shown toward her. Barbara handled it with tact and respect.

I encourage you to read this story. At the least, it’s educational. But it’s so much more! It’s a great story about hope, love and family. Just read it!

I really love Amish fiction. Elizabeth has been given a chance to leave her home, responsibilities and start a new life adventure. Paradise is her destination. She will live in an English world while being Amish. Two men take an interest in her (one Amish, one English). As the time passes, Elizabeth realizes she misses her home but she does like her new life.
I really liked Elizabeth. She was on such an exciting adventure and to go from living Amish to living with English conveniences had to be amazing. Bruce seemed like a really great guy, as did Saul. I honestly wasn't sure about Saul to begin with but as the story unfolded I liked him more and more. This is a good, quick read and if you like Amish stories, you will love this book.
I rate this a 4/5. It was a good read.

I really enjoyed this story about an Amish girl trying to figure out her place in the world. I liked the characters and their relationships with each other. I love getting the guy's and girl's perspectives and what they're thinking. Sometimes it felt like Elizabeth didn't think things through that well and I thought the relationship progressed too quickly. It was fun to see some of the characters in Cameron's previous books pop up. I really liked the message about God having a plan and that He will take care of us since He takes care of the sparrows and we are so much more important to Him. If you like Amish or romance, you should check it out!

This book kept my interest the whole way through. It is a very fast read. It was well written and flowed really well. I really connected with Elizabeth. I felt that her family was wrong to expect her to give up her wants and dreams to help with her younger siblings. She has a lot of decisions to make and some people think she makes the wrong ones, but she is a strong character. This book was filled with other great characters and I can't wait to find out what happens next in this series. I highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed.

A well written love story. There are twists, turns and honest emotions in this fast paced book. And don’t think you have the book figured out – until the end! I read this book in a few days because I had to know what happened and how things turned out for Elizabeth. This is the first book I have read by this author and I can't wait to read more and to also read the next book in this series. I have to say that I was so glad that she didn't end up with Bruce because from the moment the introduced him I really couldn't stand him. I love how this book turned out and I can't wait to read the next one.

I love reading Amish Fiction and this fit the bill. I feel as if I am right there with Elizabeth going through the same things. The author really paints the picture with this novel. I of course got caught up in reading this that I could not sleep! I had to finish the entire book. I would LOVE nothing more than to write out the entire plot for ya, but then you wouldn’t need to buy your own copy! I give this book 5/5 stars. I LOVED it!

ght of how they will effect our siblings.
Together with Elizabeth, we can experience the frustration and joys of living away from a close knit family unit.
Barbara writes a delightful page turner and I learned a lot about myself, and some about others. There is no problem unique to myself!

I revieved this book free from Amy Lathrop at Litfuse Publicity Group and Abingdon Press in exchange for an honest review. A positive critique was not required. The opinions are my own.

This is part of the Amish Roads Series-Book 1 and was sent to me as an advance reader copy.
I enjoyed the authors style and felt there was more of a story line than I have found in other books about the Amish. Ms Cameron showed that the Amish have the same problems as the rest of the world but may handle them different. While family values are important, they are not always easy or straight forward.

Elizabeth Bontrager is the oldest child and is like a second mamm to her 8 siblings . She loves her family but her mom has trouble managing the family and Elizabeth has had the lions share of work to do even with working outside the home to provide housheold income. Although she wants to honor and respect her parents , Elizabeth decides to leave and go stay with an English friend in Paradise, Pennsylvania to find God' s will for her life. Heartwarming story.

I enjoyed this book, because it was not your typical Amish book. I loved Saul's character and the way he acted towards Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth is on the bus headed to Paradise, Pennsylvania and the woman on the bus makes a comment about Rumspringa, Girls gone wild, Elizabeth's thoughts cracked me up. "Elizabeth wondered where the Englisch got their ideas about Rumspringa."
