The Heart of Frost

Rate this book
At the North Pole, no one is more powerful and feared than the Prince of Frost. As general of the toy soldier army, Jack Frost has been working extra hard to put away the villainous Mouse King once and for all. If that isn’t taxing enough, Jack has to deal with the scandal and gossip brought on by news of his relationship with Rudy Rein Dear, captain of the Rein Dear Squadron, which hit headlines last holiday season. Lucky for Jack, his reputation has managed to deter any foolish attempts to stir up trouble. At least until now.

When someone sabotages Rudy’s plane during a test run a few weeks before Christmas, Jack is determined to find the culprit by any means necessary. The closer he gets to finding answers, the more difficulty he has not falling back to his icy ways. Has the Mouse King stepped up his game in order to throw Jack off his, or is someone a little closer to home behind the attempt on Rudy’s life? Either way, Jack has every intention of delivering a Christmas they won’t soon forget, even if it means losing the newfound warmth in his heart.

This sequel showcasing the reimagining of the North Pole continues to maintain its charm and originality.

Prince Jack Frost is in love with pilot Rudy, captain of the the Rein Dears and is not afraid to show his devotion. When Rudy’s life is endangered, the outcome is more serious than expected as Jack’s protectiveness turns into cold blooded anger and only Rudy can melt his lover’s deadly demeanor before he destroys all in his path.

Cochet definitely knows how to bring the cute and charming with a nice dash of sweet sexy. I look forward to more of this Christmas world and other Rein Dears getting their happy ending!

Deliriously cute and wildly imaginative, Cochet’s second North Pole City story was a delight to read leading up to the holiday season.

Jack Frost and Rudy Rein Dear have been in a secret relationship for over two centuries. As the Prince of Frost and as the Captain of the Rein Dear Squadron, Jack and Rudy knew their relationship would come under great scrutiny, starting, but not ending, with their differences in social status as Prince and lowly Christmas elf.

Due to the events in book one, Jack and Rudy’s relationship has finally been made public to the North Pole Kingdom, and as expected, they find themselves facing all sorts of prejudices and roadblocks in their fight to maintain their once-in-an-immortals-lifetime love.

When a spiteful plot to separate the two ends with Rudy injured, Jack’s heart begins to frost over in his rage and frustration to find the culprits responsible for hurting his beloved. Stakes become high, as the icier Jack’s heart becomes the harder it will be for Rudy and their friends to bring Jack back from the clutches of the frost.

I absolutely adored Jack and Rudy, which was a pleasant surprise considering I’m not all that fond of established couple stories. I really expected to feel a big disconnect here because I love witnessing a book couples first big moments together, and the idea that we were diving into Jack and Rudy’s relationship TWO HUNDREAD YEARS IN was a bit daunting and slightly unappealing to me, at least initially. Thankfully, Cochet endeared me to these characters quickly and I found myself completely engrossed in their love and devotion to one another.

What stands out most to me, though, is the epically imaginative world-building Cochet has created here. The settings and the atmosphere, as well as the vibrant characters and their too-cute-to-be-believed dialogue all comes together to make for a truly wondrous holiday reading experience.

I had fun reading this little delight and I’m looking forward to revisiting these characters in future stories.

Wow... I thought the author would have trouble topping "Mending Noel", but in this second book she out did herself. This story went past jolly fun and went a bit more serious in many ways with Rudy's fight to thaw his lover's heart and pretty much save his soul. This story was powerful, touching and reaffirmed that true love can overcome anything! This series is truly incredible and reading it does my heart good!

"Suddenly Jack broke their kiss, his expression scandalized. "You set me on fire!"

"Yes, darling, but only because I love you."

Ha! This is my kind of fluff: sarcastic, reasonable level on tension without taking itself too seriously, and some sweet sweetness I just can't resist.

Jack and Rudy have been together a long time and I so enjoyed the depiction of that fact. They didn't have fake miscommunication mishaps or unnecessary separation. The entire story worked.

I still want to hug Tim and hang out with him. Noel is his fiercely loyal, protective and grumpy self. Grumpy-pants as Jack loves to say.

We get more of some of the other Rein Dears, Toy Soldiers and Elves in this one. Even in a novella like this, all of the relationships felt grounded in understandable truth and detail. The family dynamic was a good inclusion that helped fill everything out.

I'm not sure I'd forgive the ultimate culprit as quickly as Rudy, but he does possess a massively beautiful heart, so it worked. The mystery was rather easy to decipher but didn't negatively impact the story. I mean, we're in North Pole city, after all! :D

And, of course, I'm intrigued by Vale and Vixen. <<<< a very apt name. ;)
Or is it? What will Vale bring out in Vixen, hmmmmmmm?

As always, fun, snappy dialogue, much heart, good action scenes and yummy heat, the incredibly enjoyable ingredients in Cochet's stories.

I definitely recommend.

Book – The Heart of Frost (North Pole City Tales #2)
Author – Charlie Cochet
Star rating - ★★★★★
No. of Pages – 120
Cover – Gorgeous!
POV – 3rd person, dual POV
Would I read it again – Yes
Genre – LGBT, Holiday, Fantasy, Christmas

I thought I loved book one, but this one was a complete emotional rollercoaster!

As before, the worldbuilding and storytelling were fantastic! Such attention to detail. This is only my third story by Charlie Cochet (after book 1, obviously, and The Soldati Prince), but I can already tell that they're going to be an Instant Buy author for me, from now on.

Again, the story perfectly embodies the holiday cheer and the wintery feeling of Christmas. But the added danger and drama of that plane incident and what happens with Jack nearly killed me. The way that everything is fine one minute and then crumbling apart the next was a great piece of plotting that worked seamlessly with the events that took place.

I loved that we got to see Tim and Noel back again, but this time Rudy and Jack took centre stage and it was perfect. Tim, Noel and the addition of Vixen (who was intriguing and is up next), Hollis and Vale made great back up characters, as well as subtly introducing the next story and the characters that would be most important to that. I thought the addition of Ginger, the little Sugarplum Fairy, was genius and a perfect lead into more possible changes within North Pole City.

I loved that we got to explore Jack's relationship with his father in more detail, as that's such an important part of who he is as well as being vital to what happened previously. It was great that aspects of book 1 were picked up on and continued here – the Mouse King, the explanation of what had once happened to Jack, even the repercussions of Jack's relationship with Rudy.

Favourite Quote

““What are you all doing here?” Rudy asked quietly. Four pairs of wide eyes stared at him.
“You didn't really think we were going to sit in front of your cozy fireplace while Prince Pouts-a-lot turned you into a frozen tasty treat, did you?” Vixen replied. He looked over his shoulder at Vale, whose cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. “You're breathing down my neck, handsome.”
“Oh, I'm terribly sorry.” Vale started to shuffle back but Vixen grabbed his arm, a less than wholesome expression coming into his face.
“I didn't say move.”
“Oh. Right.” The red in Vale's face intensified and Rudy rolled his eyes. They were in immortal peril, and yet Vixen still managed to find the time to flirt.”

“Jack might be the Prince of Frost, fierce and powerful, but underneath it all was a fragile heart, one in need of Rudy's protection. For as long as he remained on this earth, he would love Jack and do his best to keep him safe.”

Love Jack and Rudy, and in this one I thought one or possibly both would end up dead. How the power of love can melt a frozen heart, sighs. Next up is Vixen, the big hunk and Vale, who is Jack's cousin. 4 stars. Must just say I loved the line 'Jack, please, I'm very fond of your baubles.' **snort**

This was an absolute delight! I enjoyed this unique interpretation of romance between fierce Jack Frost, Toy Soldiers Army General (how cool is that) and Rudy, the captain of Rein Dear Squadron (the name is too sweet for words). This story was a bit angstier and more action packed than previous one. I really liked the Rein Dears and their lives, Jack and Rudy's relationship - all the hard and the sweet parts of it. The whole society with its quirks tickled me pink. It reads easily - a bit funny, a whole lot delicious and absolutely magical. Rudy is such a sweetheart, and he balances Jack's power and smooths his rough edges. I loved them together. Short adorable novella!

This was another fun novella in the series, but this one was about Rudy and Jack Frost, and it was longer with a bit more to the story. It managed to be light and fluffy while still covering some heavier things, like prejudice against people in same-sex relationships. And guys, I just, I can't get over all their Christmas curse words and insults and euphemisms. I love it every single time, haha.

"I'd rather freeze my baubles off."
"Jack, please, I'm very fond of your baubles."

Like the first book, there were times when realism was pushed aside for the sake of fun and sweetness, but that's ok because that's the kind of books these are. The relationship in this one had more depth though. And there was one on-screen sex scene, but it was short and not too graphic. All in all, another cute Christmas read!

*Note: Even though each book has different main characters, I recommend reading these in order.*

*I've read this book multiple times. This review was written after my 1st read.*

Things took a more serious turn here but still not ever bad enough to lose the wonderful sense of place and the festive feel of this series.

Jack's being set up for a fall but it's not just a joke and has far more serious repercussions than originally intended.

I'm loving how Charlie is pulling elements from all the various different festive and Winter traditions and mythos in creatubg this setting.

Next up vain Vixen 🙂

I hope the Mouse King escapes and adds some spice to this sugar fest. He was the only character I sorta kinda connected with. 1.5 stars rounding down.

Almost one third of the book was taken by nothing happening at all, the characters were just hanging out here and there.
Jack’s father couldn’t make up his mind whether he was strongly against Rudy or just genuinely concerned about the boys’ relationship. Why was he even in the story? What was his purpose? For his son to borrow his magic? For him to smack his son across the face?
Jack gave off a huge bully vibe. Not only he was a total jack ass (yep, pun intended) to Tim and Noel, but even to Rudy, when he spun completely out of control while hunting for the villain. Watch out, Rudy, read the signs: this is your future husband! But of course, it’s “not Jack’s fault” ......says almost every abused spouse out there.
And then there is the Mouse King. Throw us a bit of a back story here, please. The guy is a nasty piece of work, sure, or so the canon says, but somehow this story left me feeling more for the dude than anyone else.

”Jack, please, I’m very fond of your baubles.”

Oh how I love this series. If the first book in the North Pole City Tales, Mending Noel, was candy canes and tinsel, this book was crème and velvet.

Go ahead, read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to the kids, then pick this up and treat yourself to romance - North Pole City style. For MM lovers this series is a Must Read holiday tradition.

THE CHARACTERS

Jack Frost - Jack needs Rudy to keep him warm, but when someone threatens Rudy’s life how can Jack keep from freezing up?

Rudy was only a Christmas elf, while Jack was the Spirit of Winter.

Rudy Rein Dear - Rudy knows how special Jack is, but is Rudy special enough to keep Jack safe? And everyone else safe from Jack.

Luckily for lovers of Mending Noel, Tim and Noel are here too and they are in perfect form.

Ooooh, ooooh, oooh and just wait until you meet Vixen!

THE STORY

How had a humble elf from the snowy plains of Gingerbread Grove ended up with the powerful Prince of Frost?

Jack has been working himself to the bone to finally bring the Mouse King to justice. Which should be more than enough to make his father, the Frost King, proud. Instead, the king seems intent on tearing their relationship apart.

Rudy’s life is threatened by the Mouse King and after Rudy is injured Jack’s cool temper is tested. Rudy will stop at nothing to find a way to keep Jack from having a meltdown.

Most of this book is set in present day North Pole City (lol), but we get to glimpse Jack and Rudy’s early relationship. We also get to see a sumptuous bath scene and lots of magic and action. Plus a gorgeous waltz at the Silver Bells Christmas Ball that will have you swooning.

THE WRITING

Charlie Cochet puts us smack dab in the middle of North Pole City. Her imagery creates a fantasyland of sumptuous delights filled with rich palaces and sparkling ballrooms. Then she surrounds all of this wonder in a love so full and deep that you can’t help but believe.

If you’ve read Mending Noel you will see a distinct difference here. As I said earlier this is richer and not quite as sweet, but have no fear you will be swept away on fluffy snow drifts to a land of enchantment.

Charlie Cochet is a fantastic writer. I really love her style; so easy to read and get carried away with. I am a big fan of her stuff . . . I still absolutely LOVE the scene I read in her The Auspicious Troubles of Chance where the two main characters meet in a box! A box! What a fantastic way to meet have the heroes meet!

Note: I don't particularly like much historical-based books, but her stories focus more on relationships than the time period they are set in and, for me, her stories read as smoothly and enjoyably as contemporary stories, which are my favorites.

I also loved her follow up The Impetuous Afflictions of Jonathan Wolfe . . . I think it's her way of drawing out sexual tension and showing us on many levels the love/romance that is happening between her characters that grips me.
Even if some of the plot is a touch unbelievable, I love it for the escapism it offers, and I just . . . gah, I just click with her writing! And I think she should be more hyped up than I see she is.

That being said, after reading Mending Noel, I had my hopes built up for a different story between Rudy and Jack. I was disappointed mostly due to my own expectations of what I wanted this story to be: namely, the story of how Rudy first melted Jack's heart and how they fell in love together.

This story had a chapter that summarized that love story, and it was gushing for me to read that summary, because I saw HEAPS and HEAPS of potential as how that would have made a brilliant friends/enemies-to-lovers story! (another of my favorite tropes).

If I am to try judge this book on the story it was, it was okay. At least, once it got the point where Jack was reverting back to Ice-Heart Jack, the tension of the love story shot up, but the first half of the book didn't really . . . move much. Rudy and Jack were happy, they were in love, yes, there were issues with King Frost's acceptance of them both, but I didn't feel much was at stake until a good chunk through the book.

I should have been gripped earlier.

*sigh*

I love the way Charlie can spin a tale, and I will continue to read all her books . . . just that this one was only so-so for me.

I am hoping that 2014 will see Vale and Vixen's story! ;)

In book one (Mending Noel) we met Jack and Rudy, an already established couple, in love and helping two Christmas Elves in trouble. The author introduced us to her sometimes hysterical, sometimes tongue in cheek, always creative and sometimes exciting alternate or adjacent world in the North Pole. Kringle is the Superior Being and Jack Frost is the Prince of the land, his father the king. Rudy is a Rein Dear, a pilot for Kringle, of course.
(You can definitely read this as a stand alone, but I suggest reading the series in order for the most enjoyment.)

In book two we learn more of Rudy and Jack’s back-story. Before Rudy, Jack had a heart so frozen he had no compassion and was feared throughout all the land. Rudy came along and thawed that heart, showing him love. At this point in the story, they’ve been a couple for hundreds of years, but only recently have they become public knowledge. Rudy has just moved into the castle and his presence is causing lots of trouble.

Rudy ends up in a suspicious accident and Jack ends up with a frozen heart again. Now it’s up to Rudy and his friends to try to unfreeze that heart before it’s too late.

**
This was not nearly as light hearted as book one. Jack has a dark side and we see a lot of it in this story. The heat between Jack and Rudy a little hotter in this book but it’s still pretty tame.

I absolutely love the Christmas-isms and the different roles all our favorite characters play in this alternate reality. How can you not laugh at curses like Holy Holly?!

Because they were an already established couple, the “romance” was a little less the focus and the drama more compelling than in book one, but it was still very tender and sweet.

I’m really enjoying these novellas and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a light holiday read full of fun and magic.

I give it 4 of 5 hearts.

I think it's going to take quite a bit to top this one. I was already intrigued by Rudy's story after the first novella. It's a really cool twist on the traditional Christmas Story. Rudy, the red-haired pilot, boy-next-door love interest of Jack Frost... Not A Christmas Tale to be missed. I was having a bad day when I started this book, and I was instantly hooked. I felt a lot better by the end of it. I can't wait to read more of this series, but the next few are going to definitely have trouble living up to this one.

A sweet gay Christmas Tale. 5/5

What a great sequel to Mending Noel! I loved how, in this world, the North Pole is run like a modern company, some elves are better than others (or think they are), and the seemingly biggest and baddest of them all, Jack Frost himself, is really just a guy who wants to enjoy spending time with Rudy, his lover, now that they have come out after 200 years of a secret relationship.

Jack Frost is ambitious, and wants to please his father, except they have a few issues. One of them is the father's strict and unrelenting attitude toward Rudy, who is "just a lowly Christmas elf", even though he made it all the way to Captain of the Rein Dears. Jack is determined to stand by Rudy no matter what, and it is that stubborn determination that almost destroys everything he has been working for.

Rudy is the sweetest guy and he loves Jack deeply. There is even more to their story than I thought, and as secrets were slowly revealed, I liked Rudy even more. Rudy can see the problem and the impending doom much clearer than Jack, and is more than determined to stop the danger about to take Jack away from him. What a guy!

If you like Christmas stories set at the North Pole and including all the fantasy creatures you'd expect there, if you enjoy reading old legends with a modern slant, and if you're looking for a heartwarming story about two men from opposite ends of the elf spectrum, you will probably like this novella. I loved it just as much as the first book in the series.

This continues to be an enjoyable series, and I think it's perfectly suited to audio format. Robert Nieman did a lovely job with the narration, although I don't have any specific comments since it's fairly straight forward. Although this has a bit of a mystery plot and some drama, I consider it a light read (hard to take Rein Dear and Christmas elves seriously I guess).

Generally I don't like books in which the MC's have a pre-existing relationship, because we miss that exciting 'new' phase. But we were introduced to Jack and Rudy in book 1, Mending Noel. Rudy gave us a recap of their relationship partway through this, and although I can see why having it be a surprise added to the mystery, I do think a short story prequel would be lovely!

I'll say it again, this is a creative, unique, light and enjoyable series, and certainly one that gets you in the holiday spirit! I recommend it as an audio because it allows to sit back and enjoy, as you see what sort of trouble the elves of North Pole City get themselves into!

Wow! This is the continuation of Mending Noel and in my opinion even better. It had action, suspense, a little drama and of course lots of romance.

Not at all the type of book/story I normally enjoy but a sweet friend (thank you, Nico!) gifted the first one to me. I'm glad I trusted her and read it. I was very surprised that I really enjoyed it. Then I couldn't wait to read this one. {Note to self, keep an open mind and trust your friends.} The author is very creative here and the romance was superb. I would definitely recommend this series!

This was also a gift from another sweet friend. Thank you, Ann!

2.5* This is the example of the book that makes me a bit mad to read. The main characters appeared in the first book of this series, they had a pretty nice ending, and the author decided to write this book to make their life more complicated and angsty ;_; why

My favorite part was when they explained their love story.
Sincerelly, I would prefer if this book would be a more detailed flashback about their story.

The characters of the previous book are still adorable! My favs! Tim and Noel :///)

I didn't like this one at all :( The pace was very strange, mostly it was slow. The relationship between Rudy and Jack was already established YEARS ago, they were sweet together, at times a bit too sugary even. But my problem was the plot part of the story took WAY too much time and while all the action happened Jack behaved SO badly I couldn't care less about him. Yeah he had his reasons and mostly he "wasn't to blame" still doesn't mean I like him..

Rudy and Jack have been in a secret relationship for years. Yet they have kept it a secret most of their lives only to reveal it about a year ago when they met Noel and Tim (now Rudy's helpers). It's not because they are gay.. it's because Jack is a prince and though Rudy is a well known and admired pilot he is still common and not royalty. Yet Rudy means the world to Jack and not only because he saved his life years ago.

When Rudy's life is in danger Jack finds himself in the same place he was years ago when Rudy and him connected while Jack taught him how to fly. Rudy is determined to have his Jack but Jack is more determined to make the one who hurt Rudy pay no matter the cost.

As I've written above, I didn't like this one. The pace was mostly slow and then when the action started I found I totally lost interest in Jack. If the book would have grabbed me from the start maybe I could have been more tolerant towards Jack and everything that happened yet I was mostly tired of him (and Rudy). I'm not even sure what was the point of this book because if you think about where we start and how we finished very little has happened to make a difference especially for the next installments.
