Obedience is better than sacrifice…and trumps romance, no matter how sweet. Profound loneliness propels a childless widow west with the idea of choosing an orphan to share her life. On the way, a fellow traveler takes her by surprise. She never dreams, is unprepared, doesn’t need another man, but can’t get him out of her head…or heart. He’s so perfect—every bit the one she’d searched for as a young woman—except his mistrust of God has erected a wall she cannot breach. Marcus Ford blames God and struggles for peace after losing his wife and baby. Not once has he considered another woman could be the answer, but the widow is like none other he’s ever met. He falls hard, but plans are taking him east. Hope dashed sends two hearts into the pit. If only Ford could forgive God or the widow ease up on her adamant resolve. Will God’s mercy shine a beacon in the fog of despair and prove sufficient to heal their souls?
Born in California, Caryl McAdoo got to Texas in time to celebrate her first birthday. As a Dallas seventh grader, she remembers a homework essay on ‘What will you be doing in 2000?’ Looking into the future, she saw herself as an inter-galactically famous author, streaking from planet to planet signing books.
She laughs, “But I didn’t start writing again until the late ’80s, then was so blessed to find the DFW Writers’ Workshop in ’93.”
Her first book debuted ’99, then for the next nine years, she averaged a title a year from four traditional presses: two non-fiction, four novels, and three mid-grade chapter books.
In March 2014, her first historical Christian romance VOW UNBROKEN debuted from Howard Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
In April that year, she re-released LADY LUCK'S A LOSER (formerly The Apple Orchard Bed and Breakfast) with a new chapter. In September 2014 HEARTS STOLEN, book two in the Texas Romance Family Saga historical romance series, debuted as her first new Indie, and in November A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS, her first Biblical fiction series The Generations launched. So four titles in 2014.
Book three of the historical Family Saga HOPE REBORN debuted in January 2015 to start off a whole new year with eleven new titles planned. THE PREACHER'S FAITH comes in February, Caryl's first contemporary in Red River Romance series. THEN THE DELUGE COMES, volume two of The Generations, follows in March.
Since 2014, she's published over sixty new books, averaging over seven new titles a year through 2020. She completed the 'Texas Romance Family Saga' with a total of ten novels, plus several 'Texas Companion Books'!
Plus, she's eight books into a second series, the 'Cross Timbers Romance Family Saga' and debuts a third New Beginnings saga's book one WAGONS WEST in November 2022, her fifth book for the year.
Also known as Grami, she adores twenty-five grandsugars, and she and O’Pa—her high school sweetheart and husband of fifty+ years write together. She’s dedicated to advancing God’s Kingdom through her novels, praying her story gives God glory!
Caryl loves to share her testimony, pray, and praise and worship Him; He frequently gives her new songs.
She believes all good things are from Him and that her books will minister His love, mercy, and grace to her readers.
Irving, Texas remained her lifelong home until 2008 when she and Ron followed God’s leading to Red River County in the far northeast corner of the Lone Star State. There at The Peaceable, the twenty acres of blessings they call home, the McAdoos raise chickens and goats while waiting for God to open the next door!
I have read each of the books in this fantastic series and with each book, I find a blessing, a message, a moral, and fall in love with the people all over again. I admire the characters, their faith, and devotion to family and God. Rebecca Rusk has been widowed for two years and has resigned herself never to marry again, but the desires of her heart are to be a mother. She travels to see her sisters in California to visit, but she also plans to find a child or two to adopt. She is tenacious when she feels God is leading her and finding two children, siblings, her heart and soul knows they are the ones. She is determined, even if she must remain in California to adopt them, that is what she will do.
Meeting Major Marcus Ford on the stage to New Orleans and finding out he was a friend of her late husband Wallace and served under her father brings mixed emotions. He knows so much about her and her family from where Wallace, Levi and Henry had shared while serving during the Civil War. The most unsettling for her is an attraction to this man. Marcus has been widowed for twelve years, his wife and daughter dying from Yellow Fever and he has mourned their deaths ever since. Why is Rebecca Rusk so easy to talk to, is it because he has heard so much about her? What would make a man change his complete directions and plans after one day talking with a woman? God works in mysterious ways.
The plot of the story is full of emotions, loss, anger, confusion, regrets and blame, but also comes with attraction and falling in love. Another does not share the faith of one and as a Christian, she knows she cannot be with an unbeliever. He questions how anyone can accept and believe in a deity that would allow so much death and sickness. This story takes the reader on a spiritual and emotional roller coaster ride but sticks with the ride because God is working, and seeing how he works in people’s lives and their faith and prayers is what makes this series a real joy and blessing. The cast of characters is well developed, with witty and heartwarming dialog and the pages turning as we continue on this journey. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understandings. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
At Liberty To Love by Caryl McAdoo is the seventh book in the Texas Romance series. It is a Christian historical romance set in 1865-66. There are many themes within the novel but a major one is being unequally yoked to an unbeliever. Rebecca trusts God and knows He will always have her best interests at heart. She puts God's Word above everything, even above her heart. "Stubborn woman, putting her religion above him." For the Christian, it is never about religion, but always about relationship with God. The novel concentrates on the command to take care of the widows and orphans. Newly widowed Rebecca longs to adopt two children. Her sisters run an orphanage, so Rebecca travels there, in the hope of realising her dream. She knows that being a lone woman will count against her, but trusting in God, she makes the journey. At Liberty To Love shows how God can speak through dreams, visions and small children. As God spoke in biblical times, so He can still speak that way today. There are some wonderful exchanges of dialogue with four year old Michael. He certainly brings out the mothering side of the reader. Caryl McAdoo demonstrates within the novel the power of trust and faith in God. "Nothing was too hard for God." God shows that He loves to step in and make the seemingly impossible, possible. Another great offering from Caryl McAdoo. I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review. No monetary compensation was received and all views expressed are my own.
This was way too soap-opera like to be enjoyable to me. There are so many characters, and the reader gets treated to the perspective of nearly each and every one of them. There was definitely some confusion here for me. This is the 7th book in a series about this extremely large family, and it’s a little hard to follow each of the many characters and how they are related to each other. I haven’t read any of the previous books in the series. The many grammar and punctuation errors added to the confusion.
The main storyline follows Rebecca and Marcus as they fall in love. It was fine until the hero’s unbelievable conversion to Christianity. One minute he’s cursing God and the next he’s confessing Christ. Wait, what!? The plotline with Francy made a bit more sense. But mostly I just didn’t care about any of these characters. I felt no connection with any of them.
This was the first book I have read by McAdoo and it won't be the last.
I loved reading and experience the faith and love of the Lord with these characters. Rebecca comes from Texas, widowed and determined to adopt her family in California. Marcus is a spiritually wounded man, with a talent to create and bring joy. They meet and instantly fall in love. The romance is instant, the faith is the best part however of this book. I loved reading what felt like true struggles with faith, and questions of the Lord, prayers and worship made this book a great read. I truly felt my faith becoming stronger reading through this book.
Rebecca met Major Marcus Ford on a stage to New Orleans. She found out he was a friend of her late husband Wallace . Marcus has been widowed for twelve years, his wife and daughter dying from Yellow Fever and he has been mourning their deaths ever since. Rebecca Rusk has been widowed for two years and has resigned herself never to marry again, but her heart desires her to be a mother. She travels to California to visit her sisters but also plans to find a child or two to adopt. Marcus asks himself why is it so easy to talk to Rebecca and what would make him change for her to to fall in love with him.
Rebecca's journey is one we have all been invited to embark upon. Will she lay down her dreams in obedience to the Father? Will she trust that Father knows what is best?
At Liberty to Love is an exceptional story of adventure, love and redemption! I was engaged in the story from the opening scene. Grab a warm beverage and enjoy the company of the Buckmeyer family.
Recommend to readers who enjoy inspirational, historical fiction.
I purchase a copy. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
I felt like this was well written and the characters were well developed. This book was fun to read as it contained excitement and humor. Rebecca had to forgive herself for her past mistakes and move on with her life after her husband passed. It was nice to see how the story moved forward after that.
I was given a free audio copy of this book by the author and I am voluntarily leaving this review.
There are some problems with the ebook version of this story but so enjoyable! Rebecca is a Civil War widow with no children. She embarks on a trip to San Francisco, where her sister's & their families run an irphanage. She meets Marcus Ford, a former major in her father's unit, who she falls in love with. He also loves her but is not a Christian, and she takes seriously the command to not be unequally yoked. What follows is a grand story of God's redeeming love.
A truly enjoyable book. This book shows how trusting in God, even when your heart is broken, can lead you to great joy. Trusting in God as she mourns the loss of her husband leads Rebecca to fill her empty life. Whar plans does God have for Rebeca? Walk with Rebecca and see where God leads her.
I'm loving this Texas Romance series! In each book, we get to know more about a few of the family, but, we also get to stay in touch with the others we've come to know and love. I just don't see that this series can ever end! Can you imagine if down the line a current book comes out of descendents of Henry and Susan Buckmeyer?
I didn't realize this was a book so far into a series. It was good as a stand alone but if I had read the previous books it would have been more enjoyable. My first book by this author.
BOOK REVIEW: " AT LIBERTY TO LOVE" by Caryl McAdoo is a Christian historical novel set in 1865 -66 on the heels of the American Civil War. The major theme throughout the book is not to be 'unequally yoked' to an unbeliever of the Christian Faith. Rebecca Rusk, the main character, an ardent believer of 'The Word' is also widow of the late Major Wallace Rusk who, after seeing active service in The War was fatally wounded. Rebecca decided not to remarry but, to compensate for the loss of her husband, by adopting children from an orphanage in San Francisco. On the stage coach journey to San Francisco, a conversation developed between her and fellow passenger Major Marcus Ford who had served in The War with her husband. Rebecca and Marcus were immediately attracted to each other. The major difference between then both was that Marcus, after the death of his wife and only infant daughter by yellow fever on the same day became very angry and denounced the Christian Faith as he could have no faith in a God who had robbed him of his favourite persons. The 'love-at-first-sight bug' bit both of them and could result in marriage. This was not to be as Rebecca could and would not be unequally yoked in marriage to Marcus a heathen. So they painfully parte company. But, following on the plot, what God has designed must be so. Later, in sharing with Jethro Resin, Rebecca's uncle Marcus hears, accepts and is converted to 'The Faith'. Will this bring Rebecca and Marcus together?? Read " At Liberty To Love" and get all the answers. The book will hold you spellbound to the last line and have you hankering for more if you love Christian fiction that is clean and decent romance.. All the characters are real and life-like and get the reader wrapped-up in them. Reading this book could help to deepen ones faith in God and also shows that He always comes through for those who trust Him.
My review I have loved each of the previous six books in this series but I think this one is my favorite because it doesn't have an abundance of characters and it deals with adoption and one of the babies that gets adopted is named Gabe, ( that is the name that my soon to be adoption grandson has). This story also is about love at first sight and obeying God. This story is also about believing in God and shows that you are never too young to be used by Him, as all of the stories in Texas Romance series do. "At Liberty To Love" shows that God places people in our paths and in places where we least except them when we obey Him. Carly McAdoo writes in a way that when the reader gets to the end of the story you want to keep reading and a little disappointed because you feel like you are leaving your neighbors and friends for a long extended vacation (till the next book comes out). I haven't shared too much of what this book is about because you can read the book info and the guest post from Caryl because it explains the story. I will say that I was hoping that Rebecca would get her heart's desires! Now I can hear you asking, "Did she?" Well, if I told you that you wouldn't want to read the book so I am going to say get reading and find out and if you haven't read the other six books, you are missing out on meeting and loving a great family that lives in Texas. I was given a copy by the author and Celebrate Lit for an honest review and I have given it. I am giving "At Liberty To Live" by Carly McAdoo five stars!
Once again the author has written an emotional book filled with characters that tug at your heart. Her details about the time period sweep you away and place you right there watching the story unfold before your eyes. I love the way she tells a story so rich with raw emotion and honesty.
Rebecca Rusk has found herself lonely for awhile since her husband died in the Civil war. The emptiness she feels is hard on her. She makes a decision one day to change her unhappiness to a life filled with joy. Why does she travel to San Francisco? Will she find happiness waiting for her there? She is very devoted to God and her faith is strong which will help her make the right choice.
Rebecca still aches for the loss of her husband, but in her travels to San Francisco, she meets Marcus Ford. I loved the banter between them as they get to know each other. The author does a great job of developing their relationship slowly . As their attraction becomes stronger , Rebecca knows that she cannot continue their relationship. Marcus has suffered a great loss and is angry at God. What will Rebecca decide to do? Can these two find a way to be together? What holds Rebbeca back from giving her heart to Marcus?
This is one book I couldn't put down. The writing was so good I pictured the steamboat they traveled on , the town they stayed at and the beauty of the land they traveled through. It is a story that captures the true meaning of faith, second chances, strong family ties and left me in tears at times. This author knows how to dig deep and pull an emotional story to the surface and give it life.
"She knew she could never be joined to a man who didn't love the Lord with his whole heart."
I received a copy of this book Celebrate Lit for an honest review
Well...I looked back over my McAdoo books reviewed and I said I was done with this author, and I'll never read her books again. I had to laugh, but I wanted to give her one more try. Maybe the last one I read was an aberration. I'm so glad I did. This book was sooooo much better. I giggled at a lot of the conversations betweeen Marcus and Rebecca, or with little Michael. Fun. It got a bit preachy in a trite sort of way somewhere in the middle, but other interactions about faith were spot on and very well done. Integrity is the strong suit in the story. Rebecca takes the verses about being unequally yoked seriously. Plus advice all around is well thought out and adhered to. Loved the interaction Marcus had with Rebecca's brother-in-law/preacher. He handled Marcus' anger with God so well. Story...Rebecca has been a widow for 2 years. On her way from Dallas to San Francisco to adopt a child or two from her sister's orphanage she has a chance meeting on a train with a man who served in the civil war with both her husband and her father. Time on the train, and being with such a charming man turned Rebecca's head in a strong way. They were both quite smitten, but she's off to SF and he's off to a professor interview in Nashville. Life takes an about face and the rest of the book is basically him following her around the US and even into Central America. Good book. The metaphysical stuff happening to several people was a bit much...including Jethro talking to a dead girl...just not realistic, but made for an interesting storyline.
At Liberty to Love is book 7 in the Texas Romance series by Caryl McAdoo. Rebecca Rusk longs for a family, being widowed for two years, she sets off to visit her sisters in California. While she is there, she looks into adopting children, when a set of siblings catches her heart and she vows that these are the children she should adopt. All Rebecca longs for is children, she has vowed not to love another man. Marcus Ford still blames God for the loss of his wife and baby, he is not looking for another woman not until he meets Rebecca. He falls hard for her but his duties are calling him east.
Will he forgive God? Will she finally let her heart go?
At Liberty to Love is another great book from Caryl McAdoo. I have throughly enjoyed reading the Texas Romance series. She will have you reading all night!!!!! If you love Historical Christian Fiction then this is the book for you!!
Thank you to the Author and Celebrate Lit for providing me with an Ebook copy of this book for my honest review.
I don't know how Caryl McAdoo does it, but each book in this Texas Romance series just gets better! "At Liberty to Love" is book 7, and its message is "Obedience is better than sacrifice" trumps the sweet romance. Rebecca Rusk, lonely childless widow, is going west with a plan to choose an orphan to share her life when she meets a fellow traveler, Marcus. She doesn't need another man, but he won't stay out of her dreams, thoughts, or heart, but he has erected a wall of mistrust of God that can't be breached. Marcus has lost his wife and infant daughter. He has never considered another woman, but he can't forget Rebecca. Will they ever be able to work out their differences? Can God get their attention by using a child? Will God's mercy prove sufficient to heal their souls? This series is a must read. I highly recommend this author and series. I was given a copy for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a little slow starting for my taste but once I got into it, it grabbed me and would not let go. I felt bad for Marcus. To see so much loss and suffering, I can understand how it would be hard to believe there is a loving God. Rebecca is also very lovable but sells herself short. She believes her husband is her one and only shot at love. Despite being extremely beautiful she feels she is unworthy of another chance at love. She clings tightly to her faith so much so that it almost cost her love. Oh, how I long to be strong in my faith like that. To put God's desires and plans above my own. It's not easy, and the author didn't spare Rebecca the pain or gloss over the struggle of choosing God's ways over what she thinks will make her happy. The characters are so real it's easy to get wrapped up in them and forget their fictional. I highly recommend this book to anyone but especially those who love historical fiction.
Book 6 of the Texas Romance series was a little disappointing to me, but Caryl McAdoo has come through for me and other readers with number 7, At Liberty to Love. Rebecca Rusk is a widow now that her late husband went to his final reward, but Rebecca is tired of being lonely. She opts to go to visit her sisters in California and look into adopting a child, or two, to bring back home to Texas. She doesn't have plans to marry again, but when she meets up with Major Marcus Ford on the stagecoach heading to New Orleans, they strike up a conversation about Rebecca's late husband, who Major Ford served with during the Civil War.
The chemistry between these two is something to read. A story of love and redemption for all ages. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and I know everyone else will. I would tell more about this book, but I don't want to spoil the fun. Get yourself a copy and Enjoy!
This is one of my favorite authors and favorite series.. I love the Buckmeyer family. Each one feels like family! Rebecca has become a childless widow due to her husbands stubbornness to save himself after being seriously injured. She has dreamed of being a mother. Now she prays that when she travels to California to hopefully adopt a child from an orphanage her family supports, her prayers will be answered. Along the way she meets Marcus Ford and her heart takes a fall for this man and we follow along as she tries to follow God's will and stick to her plans that had once seemed so clear. The characters are interesting and the story just pulls you in. Take a chance and get a copy, this is definitely a book I'd highly recommend ! ! I was gifted a copy for review.
Caryl has done it again and written another a story that is a wonderful addition to this series. This is the 7th book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone, and I certainly do recommend reading the entire series to get the full background on the characters.. Caryl certainly knows how to combine Texas history, romance, and faith and write a story that is a delight to read. I have loved following the Henry Buckmeyer family in each book and I definitely recommend the entire series. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review, and it is another one of Caryl's that I loved.
I had trouble keeping up with names or catching n to some back stories. While the attraction between the two main characters was decisive and refreshing, other elements took away from the enjoyment. Why would she think 2 years a widow is too soon to remarry? The boys prophetic bent was too much, even to someone who believes in God directing people. And Francy was an awful character to do what she did with no remorse. Her eventual apology wasn’t convincing and she didn’t have the maturity to get engaged, and the boy didn’t either. And what was he story with Marcus helping a family along the way?
This is a very good story. I love how Rebecca and Marcus met. Marcus knew many of Rebecca's family members during the civil war. He was friends with her now dead husband. Marcus felt he already knew a lot about Rebecca when they had their chance meeting. Rebecca is on her way to California to see some of her sisters and their families. She also has a secret that she won't reveal until she gets to California. They have some adventures and romance. Well done. I received this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion.
Loved the story. Marcus overcame the trials the devil put in his way. And true love was found. Rebecca after becoming a widow, wants nothing more than to adopt a child. On her journey, God leads her to love. Marcus unfortunately has lost his faith in bitterness over the loss of his child and beloved wife. This beautiful story unfolds with mercy and Grace.
This was such a good story. I loved getting to know the heroine better and meeting Marcus. The story shows that when you trust in God and follow his instructions then he will give you the desire of your heart. I would definitely recommend this book. I received a PDF copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
I’ve followed Henry Buckmeyer and his family since the first book, "Vow Unbroken" and couldn't wait for this one. Could this be the true love the widow has never known before? At Liberty To Love as always, gives glory to God. All Caryl McAdoo’s stories are uplifting and truly enjoyable. I highly recommend this one and all of the stories in the Texas Romance series.
I so enjoy Caryl McAdoo's novels. I know that they are going to be faith filled with exceptional characters. I loved that Rebecca stood her ground about not being unequally yoked to Marcus. It was great to re-visit with the characters I have enjoyed before and to delve deeper into Marcus and Rebecca's lives.
At Liberty to Love was a great read. Rebecca had to forgive herself and move on from her husband dying and give herself permission to Love again. The being unequally yoked played a part in the story. Another great historical fiction romance. Excited to read the next book in this series.
A young widow finds romance with one of her deceased husbands friend's
A young widow finds romance and love with a friend of her late husband. This is a page turning story of their romance and love. The widow tries to adopt a child. This is a must read.
This is my first time reading Caryl McAdoo. She writes with warmth and humor and takes you where the characters are. Love how she naturally weaves scripture and the plan of salvation in her storyline. I heartily recommend her.
