Caught in the vicious ice storm of 1998, would you survive?

A severe ice storm hits Montreal and parts of Eastern Canada. Ethan’s dad is in Toronto on business and his step mom, Sylvie, is going to have a baby in about three weeks. The weather is so bad his dad can’t fly home. When the power goes off in their building, they try to adjust, but it’s cold despite all the blankets, and it’s dark despite candles and lashlights. Sylvie suddenly feels unwell. Is the baby coming early? Ethan needs to act fast to help his family. Will they survive?

While Edan's father is away and his step-mother is in the late stages of her pregnancy, the Ice Storm of 1998 hits Montreal. With no power and no heat, they struggle in the cold, worrying about their elderly neighbour, Mrs. Greenbaum.
This easy to read chapter book is great for new and reluctant readers. The plot develops steadily and finishes well. The limited amount of characters focuses the story on them and the particular struggles they face. Recommended to middle grade readers who enjoy true stories with an element of survival.
