A serial killer is targeting illegal aliens in southern Texas. Texas Ranger Cody Jackson is paired with a local police officer, Liliana Rodriguez, to investigate the murders. While the case brings Cody and Liliana ever closer, the tension between Americans and Mexican Americans heightens. As Cody and Liliana race to discover who is behind the murders and bring peace to the area, what they uncover isn't what they expected. Will Cody and Liliana's faith and love be strong enough to survive the storm of violence?
Margaret Daley, an award-winning author of seventy-six books, has been married for over forty years and is a firm believer in romance and love. When she isn’t traveling, she’s writing love stories, often with a suspense thread and corralling her three cats that think they rule her household. Shattered Silence is a relevant novel for people living close to the Mexican border. Though I live in Arizona, one can see the border fence at night from my front porch, so I know what it's like to wonder what those helicopters mean when a bunch fly overhead at night. A lot of stuff happens that I'm sure we only know a little bit about. Anyway, this novel is set in Texas. There is just something about those Texas Rangers that seems sexy to me (and I'm sure I'm not the only one.)
The hero in this story was intriguing and very likable. The fact that he wanted to be a good father to his teenage son gave his character some depth. The heroine was spunky, but at the same time very real and guarded because of childhood abuse. She was strong, but not in a way that seemed forced or created for the story to make her seem tough. Liliana's characterization made her feel real enough to be an actual person, even though she's fictional. I wanted her to find love and be able to trust a man knowing that all of the men in her life had been violent before she met the handsome Texas Ranger.
There were a lot of subplots through this story, but they tied together nicely. They all had to do with violence of one type or another. From a serial killer, to bullies at schools and domestic violence in her sister's family, there wasn't a slow moment in this book. One thing I noticed -- and liked -- was how the author ended a lot of scenes with a cliff-hanger. It was cool the way the author did it. Like the snake was about the strike, then a scene break happened and she went on to another person's point of view, which began in an entirely different area and/or scene of the story. It almost made me want to hum... da da da dum dum... like in the TV series, Dragnet.
If you like suspenseful romantic tales that keep you reading, and ones that have a lot of plot twists, you'll enjoy this book. It had some vivid scenes and deep emotion that held my interest. And the romance was...sigh worthy. Great story!
This book was only ok for me. It came off too much like an after-school special. Kyle had no period of growth. His views on minorities changed pretty much instantaneously, and then he immediately gets the backing of all of his classmates against the bullies.
The rest of the book was pretty predictable and only did a so-so job of holding my attention. I won't continue the series, I'm not interested in reading more of the same predictable storyline.
I was very interested in Margaret Daley's series, "The Men of The Texas Rangers," for a couple of reasons: One - I'm from Texas, and two - I have a cousin who was a Texas Ranger. I was curious to see how she would portray these men who are almost mythical here in my home state, and in reality are some of the finest law enforcement men there are.
I'll have to say - Margaret Daley did good! Not only is her portrayal of Ranger Cody Jackson accurate, Daley adds a personal touch to the character that gives him a softer dimension without taking away from the fact that he is one of the toughest bad-assed cops a criminal would ever not want to meet! You do not want to mess with a Texas Ranger!
"Shattered Silence" is a well-written story that moves at a quick pace with a plot that is relevant to today. Daley's characters are realistic and personable, her background setting and additional characters add to the tale, and overall it is a fascianting mystery that keeps readers entranced up until the very final page. This book is also a well-done Christian novel and has elements of inspiration and faith mixed in without being too "in your face." This is the second book in Daley's series, but first-time readers can read it as a stand-alone novel with ease.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a fast-paced mystery. I look forward to the next book in this series!
The narrator was good but I kinda felt like the story lagged a bit. There was plenty going on with three different situations going on, with a murder, an abusive husband and the romance developing between the characters, but..... I kinda felt like it was missing something. It just didn't keep me as engaged as I would have liked. Nearing the end, I just wanted everything to get tied up and be done....
Wow! This book has a lot going on! Generational physical abuse, bullying, white supremacy, murder, gun trafficking, loss of a parent. It's a lot, but after a few chapters you start to feel in the know instead of lost in chaos. There's a Christian element, but it's minor. I wish it was highlighted more. I thought the narration was very good. Except for a few scenes where the new white Texas Ranger is conversing with the previous Hispanic Texas Ranger. These few scenes sound like one guy is talking to himself. There is no difference in these two character's voices at all. One thing is for sure, you can't trust just anybody, but you have to trust somebody!

Cody is now in Durango, with his son Kyle. Now having sole custody of his son, is not easy, Kyle is angry at him and everything. His way was bullying people that he learned from his step father. They are close to the Mexican.border dealing with illegals. Having three murders Cody has his work cut out to figure what is going on. His portrayal as a Texas Ranger was good, and fit into the story. Would things change between him and his son. Good series, showing life when one is close to the border.
Well written Christian story. Enough suspense to keep you involved from beginning to end. If you like a good mystery with a happy ending (and I surely do), you’ll be glad you read this one
This is the second book in the series Men of the Texas Rangers. The series is all about Texas Rangers but included cowboys so that makes it even better. I read all four and thought they were suspenseful and romanic so I liked all of them.
This was an okay book for me. I really enjoyed the story line; however, it was missing the suspense that I usually find in Margaret Daley books. I really enjoyed watching Kyle grow & change throughout the book.
I really like the storyline. My only remark is that even though it’s clean - but even with religion. Clean doesn’t mean religious. Either way, it’s worth the read.
After the death of his ex-wife, Texas Ranger Cody Jackson and his fifteen year old son Kyle moved from Houston to Durango. He wanted to get his son away from the dangers of the city and out of the influential clutches of his step-father, who belongs to a white-supremacist group currently under investigation. Unfortunately some of the step-father's bigoted racial influences has rubbed off on Kyle, causing him trouble at school. Cody also moved to Durango to help find the person who was responsible for the shooting of his mentor, Texas Ranger Al Garcia, who was forced into retirement.
Liliana Rodriguez is a Detective with the Durango Police Department. Liliana is no stranger to trouble, she grew up in an abusive household, and her sister Elena is continuing the vicious cycle of staying in an abusive marriage.
When a serial killer targets illegal Mexican immigrants in Durango, Cody and Liliana are partnered together to investigate the murders. As they work together to solve the murder cases and a case involving a smuggling ring, there is an attraction that builds between them even though they try to fight it. With tensions building in the community between Americans and Mexicans, and the struggle to deal with their own personal issues, can Cody and Liliana solve the cases and find love among the tension and violence?
Shattered Silence is a suspense thriller that packs a powerful punch. Mixing murder, racism, bigotry, bullying, and domestic violence with a healthy dose of romance, faith and inspiration, author Margaret Daley weaves another spellbinding tale in the second book of the Men of the Texas Rangers Series. While this book may be part of a series, each book has new characters and can stand alone. Written in the third person narrative with alternating perspectives by Cody and Liliana, this riveting story has a lot of subplots that will keep you engaged and guessing what will happen next.
Rich in details, vivid descriptions and intriguing subplots; with characters that are realistic and complex; and with dialogue and interactions that are engaging, Shattered Silence is an exciting story full of romance, suspense and thrilling twists and turns that make this one heck of an entertaining read!
Shattered Silence is part of a series of books that combines romance and suspense with social issues and Christian inspiration and faith that will engage and entertain readers from beginning to end, and keep you yearning for more.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by Pump Up Your Book! Virtual Book Publicity Tours.
Disclaimers: I received a temporary e-galley of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I loved the first in this series and so naturally I was psyched to hear that Daley had written a sequel. Even though this is a sequel, this novel can stand on its own. This book focuses on new characters and a new plot.
Having said that, I adored this book. Daley has the ability to combine romance and suspense with deeper issues. Her first book she tackled on human trafficking; with this book, she tackled the effects of abuse and the complex issue of immigration and illegal immigration and racism.
I love authors who take on hard topics and still manage to craft a brilliant story. While I would say I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I did the first one in the series, I still really enjoyed this one.
The characters were intriguing. Cody and Liliana switched off perspectives as the story unfolded and I loved watching them interact as they tried to solve the murders.
I also love how Daley focuses on an older generation as well as characters who are in their teens. Readers are also able to gain insight into teenager Kyle's mind who is ticked at his dad Cody for making them move and is on his way to being racist. I loved watching him grow and develop.
The Christian element was never forced in this novel and I loved that. I also loved watching all the characters progress as the novel developed.
I have read so much suspense that I'm beginning to be able to guess the murderer. I managed to do that with this novel, but that is my only complaint about this novel. All in all it was a great read.
In Summary: This is the second book I've read by Daley and I can assure you it won't be the last. With the ability to combine intriguing characters with a compelling plot that delves into some deeper issues in life, Daley is definitely an author I'll be keeping my eye on.
Warnings/Side-notes: This book was very clean. It does deal with abuse but in a way that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to any reader.
The Wrap-up: Daley writes beautiful, profound, and insightful books that I really enjoy reading. I recommend you read Daley if you like romantic suspense, and especially recommend her if you like Christian romantic suspense.
Texas Ranger, Cody Jackson, headed to the town of Durango, Texas for a few reasons. One was to help solve a case involving a fellow Ranger, Al Garcia who was shot while on duty and was now recovering and retiring at the same time. The second reason was to removes his teenage son, Kyle from his stepfather's white supremacist habits and thinking. Since Kyle had recently lost his mother three months ago, he clung to the beliefs that all other races of people were wrong to associate with and began bullying kids in his old high school. Kyle wasn't any bit happy about his dad, Cody taking him far from Houston almost before the school year was out and trying to be a dad now after divorcing his mother three years ago.
But his new job in Durango is about to get interesting as a rise in murders begins to climb to three in four short days, launching Cody into a new working relationship with Durango police officer, Liliana Rodriguez. She has just the right influence to draw the local Hispanic community into talking with her and Cody about the recent crime spree in their usually quiet town. Now on the heels of what could be a serial killer, someone begins burning down all the crime scenes in an effort to hide evidence. Is there a connection between all the murders and recent arson fires in Durango, or is it possibly a Mexican drug cartel who is trying to make sure that Cody and Liliana don't connect all the dots between drug and arms smuggling into Texas?
I received Shattered Silence by Margaret Daley compliments of Pump Up Your Book Tours and Abingdon Press for my honest review. This is the second book in The Men of the Texas Rangers series and I would rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars. This is the story of dealing with issues from the characters pasts in this case especially with Cody and Kyle. Both father and son have to deal with healing their divided relationship that time has worn on to find true forgiveness and second chances for a new life. For Liliana Rodriguez the patterns of her past become something she has to face with an abusive father growing up and now her sister is living with an abusive husband. However this time, Liliana is in a position to do something about it. The ending offers a conclusion you didn't see coming and well worth picking up this series of books.
Cody Jackson moved to a smaller town for a variety of reasons - to get his son out of the dangers of Houston, and so solve the attempted murder of his mentor.
The first day proves one thing: Life is definitely not quiet in a small, boarder town.
As Jackson and local police officer, Liliana Rodriguez, work together to investigate a series of murders, they discover that villain in an unexpected place.
This is the second book in the "Texas Rangers" series by Margaret Daley for Abingdon Press. It opens with a murder and keeps moving until it's final page.
What I like: Daley is good at combining mystery, suspense and romance in a novel. The book has just the right mixture of the three elements.
I like how she keeps the villain a surprise - and a wee bit unexpected (it's not someone you first imagine.) She is good at building characters and creating interesting and unique situations.
Another plus: even though it's book two, it truly is a "stand alone" book. If you didn't read book one, you won't find yourself lost trying to catch up with missing dialogue.
What frustrates me: In both this novel and in the first book, Saving Hope, the book moves at a "warp" speed as we find out who the serial killer's identity. But then, it "drops" off. It just ends. The conclusion seems rushed and as if there's something missing.
Jackson is in the town for two reasons - to pull his son away from the influences of his stepfather, and to solve the attempted murder of his mentor. Neither of these two story lines came to a satisfactory resolution.
On the scale of one to five, I give this book (and series) a solid three. The novels are interesting and solid. They are a good read - especially ifyou are looking for something with the twist of suspense.
(I was given a copy of this book through the Net Galley review program - but the review was not influenced by the free book.)
Durango is a nice town in Texas. Police Detective Liliana Rodriguez has lived in Durango all her life and she knows most of the residents. She loves her job and her family. There's not much time for other things in her life--surely no place for a love life. Liliana's partner is going on vacation when the new Texas Ranger arrives in Durango.
Texas Ranger Cody Jackson has just moved to Durango, Texas. Soon after he arrived, a pregnant woman was murdered. In the week that follows more people were murdered. Cody and Liliana are going to work together to solve the case. While doing that they come across a gun smuggling ring. Are the smugglers responsible for the murders, or is there another killer out there?
After an abusive childhood, Liliana has built a wall around her heart. There's no place for a man in her life. Her father was an abuser and her sister is also living with an abusive husband. When she gets to know Cody better, she finds out he is different. Can she let a man into her heart and busy life?
Cody's ex-wife died a couple of months ago. His son Kyle lived with his mom and now comes to live with Cody. He's trying to be the father Kyle needs, but Kyle doesn't like to live with his father and to live in Durango. Soon Kyle will make new friends and he will have to make an important choice in making friends.
Shattered Silence is book 2 in Men of the Texas Rangers series. Although it is the second in a series the book can be read as stand-alone. I think Margaret Daley has written an enjoyable and exciting story full twists and turns. I kept guessing how the story would end. It was just near the end that I began to suspect the bad guy. Nicely done, Margaret!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my review copy.
Liliana Rodriguez is a detective on the Durango Police force (apparently, Durango is in Texas. This initially confused me, because I’m sure I remember visiting Durango in Colorado. Never mind. This is another Durango, population 1885, if the internet is to be believed). Her partner has recently retired due to injury, so when a murder victim is discovered, Liliana is paired with Cody Jackson, the new Texas Ranger in town.
Cody has just moved to town with his son, Kyle. Cody’s ex-wife, Kyle’s mother, has recently died, so Cody has taken custody of his son rather than leaving him with his step-father, because the step-father is a white supremacist who is currently under investigation, and it appears that Kyle has picked up some of his step-father’s unfortunate beliefs, and this is causing trouble at his new school.
Soon another murder victim is found… then two more. Four victims in three days, with no obvious relationship between them. Yet there must be something connecting the victims. Outside work Cody and Liliana each have their own problems, Cody with his son, and Liliana with her sister, who is married to an abusive man but can’t be persuaded to leave him.
Shattered Silence covers a lot of ground – murder, racism, domestic violence, school bullying (along with a dose of faith and some romance). It does it all well, but it’s almost as if there are too many subplots that end up taking focus off the main murder plot. A good book, certainly, but not a great book.
This is the second book in the Men of the Texas Rangers series, following Saving Hope, but is a stand-alone title. Thanks to Abingdon and NetGalley for providing a free book for review.
Illegal aliens are being targeted by a serial killer. The first victim was a pregnant Hispanic woman. Maria a young child was a witness to this but the killer at the time did not know the child was in the abandoned house. Liliana Rodriguez, a police officer and Cody Jackson a Texas Ranger band together to try to solve this mystery. Each have their own set of problems. Cody Jackson is raising his son after his ex-wife died. He's trying to undo all the damage that his bigoted ex wife's husband inflicted on his son. Liliana has her own set of problems. She grew up in an abusive household. Her mother never would leave the abusive husband. Liliana's sister Eleana is repeating the same cycle were her own marriage to an abusive man.
To be honest I did not like this book as much as I liked the first book in the series. Too much police work and at times I got confused at all the suspects in the story. I think the chemistry between Liliana and Cody was a bit lacking but that's just my opinion. I think the storyline of the abuse that went on in her sister's marriage was written well. I got really frustrated with the sister for putting up with her abusive marriage. I hope the message gets across to the reader that there are options. You don't have to stay in an abusive relationship. There are people and services to help you. I hope the message gets across to break the cycle.
This book is due to be released in September 2012. Thanks for Netgalley and Abingdon Press for providing me with this ebook to review.
Shattered Silence by Margaret Daley The Men of the Texas Rangers Book 2 Texas Ranger Cody Jackson has just moved to Durango, Texas from Houston. After the death of his ex-wife he now has full custody of his fifteen year old son, Kyle. Instead of moving to the quiet town he imagined….he has a murder to solve within hours of his arrival. And it only escalates from there.
Police Detective Liliana Rodriguez will do all she can do to protect the people of Durango but especially her family. She demands control in her life because she didn’t have any growing up with an abusive father. Because of her father she never wanted to trust a man to have any control in her life….and then she met Cody Jackson.
The first book in this series is Saving Hope, excellent book. Even though they are a series they can definitely be read as stand alone books. Shattered Silence is full of individual stories. Cody trying to be the father that Kyle needs. Kyle step-dad had raised him to hate anyone different, he is now faced with making his own choices. The book has bullies and the damage they can cause….no matter what age. And of course the murders. Margaret does a great job of keeping the reader guessing who the villain is by throwing in several guilty looking suspects. Never a dull moment. **Received through NetGalley for review http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
