Hunting Down Dragons

Rate this book
Death is coming for you, Anne Moody...

The Oddsmakers have been overseeing the use of magick in Las Vegas since the city's inception. For a dragon sorceress like Anne Moody, who tries to stay beneath the radar while running her cursed pawn shop, the Oddsmakers are the boogeymen she never wants to meet. They have the power to strip of her of her magick or worse if they deem her a danger to the city.

Unfortunately, the Oddsmakers want her for a mission and Anne can't refuse. However, she has her own agenda: investigating a sorcerer who possesses the power to not only create life, but to raise the dead. With the gargoyle Vale by her side and with the help of her magickal friends, Anne tracks strange creatures beneath the streets of Las Vegas. But when tragedy strikes close to home, Anne realizes she may have to risk the wrath of the Oddsmakers and call upon her dragon for help. Because in the isolated desert, far from the eyes of ordinary humans, she is about to confront her parents' killer, and nothing is going to stop her from finding vengeance.

The half-Chinese 'dragon' continues on her adventures. Which consist of owning a cursed pawn shop. And attempting to keep from following her blood lure (bah, how was that worded? Ancient family ways, blood lure, ancient blood, pfft) and accidentally turn dragon and go on a rampage. Oh, and keep from being 'dealt with' by the 'oddsmakers' who control Los Vegas.

She goes and watches fireworks in the desert with her friends. Gets magically teleported by these oddsmakers. Told she'll get a task to prove herself. Isn't told what the task is. Finds her boyfriend hanging against the wall there, frees him, gets knocked out, both end up sitting in desert. Without knowing if it is actually the task or not, Ann Moody and her boyfriend Vale (the gargoyle) hunt the man who killed her parents. Since the oddsmakers had said that her parents, and uncle, had been given the same task they will give her and they failed. Well, what better way to fail than to die, eh? So Ann assumes that the killer has some connection.

So, her friends and Vale go down this specific path.

Interesting story. Not great, but interesting.

I enjoyed the blend of friends that Anne has, and her love interest. The world here is full of supernaturals - monkey shifter, gargoyle, fortune teller, wolf shifter water fae, and Anne herself who's dragon blood. Anne is a great person that's also of a diverse nationality and so common. I love the writing of her as she's a normal, regular person as she should be. Anne and her dragon familiar are connected. But the connection could draw Anne to be a dragon, which is not a good thing. It's so tempting yet so dangerous that she could lose herself. And she will be watched by he Oddsmakers who rule the supernatural in the city because of her heritage.

****FULL REVIEW****
*This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review at my request.

Someone is looking to set Anne up, get her in serious trouble with the Oddsmakers who rule the city. Or so Anne thinks. No one's to do magic around normal people, and someone adds a dragon to the firework display, hoping it will point to Anne with her dragon familiar. After facing the Oddsmakers, Anne learns from Vale what her mom was looking for when she died. A necromancy artifact. Anne is determined to find this artifact, and learn who killed her parents on that mountainous road years ago and maybe find her Uncle who's missing.

Anne Moody's mom and uncle have each had their own task to perform for the Oddsmakers, and failed. Per the Oddsmakers, Vegasso was the first to arrive to capitalize on their failure, others will follow. But before Anne can know what the task was her family was to perform, she must prove she and her ancestors are not traitors. Or her life and those of her friends will be forfeit.

Jenna is a new narrator to me. I like when she gives a sound to one voice as though spoken into a room that has a large feel to it the distant echo-y voice. This extra really is awesome to get in an audio book. I enjoyed Jenna as she voiced the character's personalities. The audio felt seamless along with the cadence and emotions feeling to flow smoothly as she brought the story to life for us.

I've not read or listened to the first book. I know, that's out of character for me. But I liked the sound of the book and had to give it a go. It's all okay though. It's easy to pick up with the characters, world, and story in this second book without reading the first. The beginning of the book lists out who the characters are to each other and what they are. We learn about the Oddsmakers and even get mention of what happened in the first book as we head into what happens on the Fourth of July in Nevada as Anne and her friends sit watching fireworks in the desert.

I enjoyed the blend of friends that Anne has, and her love interest. The world here is full of supernaturals - monkey shifter, gargoyle, fortune teller, wolf shifter water fae, and Anne herself who's dragon blood, and these are just Anne's close friends. Anne is a great person that's also of a diverse nationality. I love the writing of her as she's a normal, regular person as she should be, in a supernatural world. Anne and her dragon familiar are connected. But the connection could draw Anne to be a dragon if she gives to much when using Lucky, which is not a good thing. It's so tempting yet so dangerous that she could lose herself. And she will be watched by he Oddsmakers who rule the supernatural in the city because of her heritage.

There is more to Vale than meets the eye. We start to see this here, but I think there is more to come out and want to learn about him. I want to see Anne with her other friends too. But there is more to the past with her parents and uncle. We learn about what happened to her parents, but there was something else with her mom and what she was searching for at the Oddsmakers demand. Also, Anne's uncle is still missing. I am curious about them all.

I know it sounds like we don't get answers, but we do. I just have a feeling there is more than meets the eye with it all. I look forward to the series as it all unfolds for us and the characters.

Something in the story telling reminds me of Linsey Hall's Urban Fantasy series. If you enjoy one author, you may enjoy the other.

I like the creation of a world with many supernaturals in Las Vegas. There is so much that can happen there and lots of space to happen in. Anne having a potential danger with her dragon heritage. And we get a feel there is more to Vale.

Overall, after writing my thoughts, I've found I really enjoyed the story and want to read/listen to more books with Anne and her friends.

I like the variety of characters and their ethnic, sexual orientations, and behavioral and personality differences. I love that she doesn’t wear leather pants and stiletto boots like so many urban fantasy characters. I like that she presented homeless people as real people.

But like those annoying leather clad heroines, she mouths off and antagonizes the extremely powerful beings. At least someone else yells at her about it later.

This was the beginning of a story arc I’m not thrilled with: super powerful beings give vague orders to the heroine that she has to figure out. It’s not original. The bad guy just didn’t do it for me either. But it was interesting enough that I’ll read the next one.

One nitpick:
If they just need to know when the guy dies, why don’t they just go to a spiritualist like Celestine?

DNF - quit at 10%
At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

"Hunting Down Dragons" once again highlights the antics of dragon, Anne Moody and her quirky set of friends. After being absent from Anne's life, her gargoyle boyfriend Vale is reunited with her when she is taken to another dimension by the notorious Oddmakers. Rather than be appropriately, humbled and subdued, Anne is snarky and rather disrespectful if the group when she undercoat Vales has been strung up naked and abused in order to keep her in line.

The elusive oddmakers reveal to Anne they have been watching her. Her parents and her uncle have both failed to accomplish the task they set before them. However, before they reveal what they want Anne to do she and Vale are whisked back into they lives in Vegas, They believe that it is their task to locate a mysterious golem that is hidden in Vegas and discover who it's master is. In doing so, they must find the artifact that creates the golem.

As Anne enlists the aid of her friends, some fall victim to this new threat. Anne is unwilling to risk any more lives of those she loves; yet, there is no way Monkey or Vale will leave her to fight this battle alone. Of course, the cameos continue to foretell doom and gloom for poor Anne ; however, she manages to weather the storm!

This was a great installment to the first book in this series. I loved the crazy world in which Anne lives as well as the quirky cast of characters. There's also plenty of action and bad guys to go around. I just feel the ending felt a little unfinished. However I can't wait for book three.

“The dead are coming for you, Anne Moody…”
Anne and Vale are back, and so are the cranky cameos, their newest barrage for Anne all involve death. Anne finds more than fireworks July 4th, in the desert, she sees a dragon (thankfully the humans’ just think it is a fancy pyrotechnic). Shortly after, she gets an abrupt introduction to the Oddsmakers who have Vale and threaten to use him to get her to do a mission. Of course, Anne does not take threats well and tells them in no uncertain terms they are not going to use Vale. Vale, concerned that Anne is going to get herself in trouble Lucky cannot get her out of gets her to agree to the mission (even though the lousy Oddsmakers refuse to tell her what it is, her only lead is that her parents and Uncle all tried and failed). From Vale she finds out her parents were after an artifact that could raise the dead, thinking that must be what the Oddsmakers want she picks up where Vale and her parents left off and find evil doers wielding dark magic, golems (one is a really nasty troll), and zombies. Just when it looks like they have prevailed the Oddsmakers state the artifact was not the mission (although they are pretty quick to grab and keep it). Just as exciting and thrilling to read as the first one and I am waiting on pins and needles for the next one!

Good of its kind

This series is holding my attention, something a little hard to do since I've gotten older. The heroine is likable, though mouthy to the point of being bone stupid at times. The occasional unique bit, like the harbinger cameos, her haunted home, and monkey shifter bff, raise this world a cut above average, but still so far there is nothing unique enough on a large scale to rate a five star. There are occasional editing glitches that get on my nerves a little. Unfortunately, both these errors seem to be a trend in paranormal novels. Ladies, the proper spelling of being put through the wringer, as in going through difficulties, is with a w. It refers to a part of an old fashioned washing machine that mashed things flat, not to a telephone, which would be ringer. And, the proper way to state the following is: if you think you can do that, you have another think coming. Not another thing coming. Yes, I know, it's pedantic and picky of me but I've seen this so often that I need to say something before it becomes standard and doesn't make any sense at all! Sorry, rant over, but closer editing would avoid jarring me out of the story, and might have been the difference between a four and five.

I wasn't a fan of the cliffhanger :( It didn't annoy me too much, I've got kindle unlimited and can just go straight to the next one but cliffhangers always annoy me.

I also felt like the romance aspect was a bit strange in this book, there were times when I felt like Vale was being a bit creepy and I wanted to know how old he was, it felt like Anne and Vale were just jumping around the subject- there are quite a few comments about how he's alot older but neither of them actually bother to say by how much.

I really love this series. I'm so glad I tried it out. The cover is again beautiful. The only thing I hate about this series is the main characters name. Anne. It's so plain...when the character isn't at all.

Anywhoooo....

This is the second installment of the Moonlight Dragon series. (There will be a third...YES!) This book got started off way faster than the first book. Really liked that. The cover is awesome...again.

Anne and the gang spends this book hunting down any information pertaining to her parents deaths. They meet a new foe and a new species of magical being. I love Anne and Melanie's sense of humor. Lots of laughs again with this book.

If you haven't picked up Hunting Down Dragons yet you definitely should.

As with the first, the characters were great fun. The story was interesting and I enjoyed the continuity from the first book as well as learning more about the people. However, it was a little on the slow side. I had trouble getting into it at first and it dragged in places. I’d also say that this is a book that’s definitely about the journey rather than the destination. There’s excitement, but the ending left a little something to be desired. I’m interested to see what’s to come.

Hunting Down Dragons was a fascinating chapter in the story of Anne and her friends. Don’t miss out!

Love love love it!

This is such a different story with fantastic characters that I'm obsessed! Anne is one of a kind with a best friend that's hilarious! Her love interest is good so far but too mysterious for my liking, so I hope more is revealed in the next book about Vale. Each chapters holds its own and I'm never bored or skimming. Definitely worth reading g

Anne and her quirky friends are back. More is found out about the "Oddmakers." Will be interesting what job the Oddmakers have her do (assuming for future book). She did find out more about that happened to her parents and was able to get some closure (and vengeance).
The cameos continue their creepiness "Death to Anne Moody."

Well, the story is getting impulse. I don't trust Vale completely: he keeps too many secrets. And he is all mysterious and sexy, but I haven't got to know him. I mean, I know he is hated by what he is, that h is a prince and he feels attracted to Moody, but I still haven't laughed with him. Don't know how he feels toward Moody (besides aroused). And he disappears too easily.

But I liked Moody. This time she was strong, resourceful and witty. But I'm not in love with Melanie.
