It's is a fast-paced book about the fourteen-year-old Mathias who had to leave his village to work as an apprentice for a businessman in Bergen. There a unique friendship develops between him and another apprentice named Simon. Together they master everyday life, characterized by hard physical work, physical abuse and other adversities. And slowly, a stronger feeling of affection for Simon developed. Nevertheless, I wished to see their relationship more deepened to learn more about their feelings and past. The same applies to the other characters, about whom little in-depth information has been obtained. Still, I enjoyed reading this book more than I thought at the beginning.
