After hearing the authors read from this anthology at the launch, I had to get my hands on a copy. This book covers an expansive landscape of subjects, characters and emotion. Handling comedy, crime, child marriage, aggression, suspense, regret and the supernatural to name a few masterfully. In Mango Tree - Andrew delivers one of the finest, poetic moments of character realization I've read in a while-
"At nights he stopped being Johnny, the powerful black man. At nights he became Johnny, the little black boy, crying out to the mother who forsook both him and his sister, always begging his uncle in a little boys voice to leave his sister alone. In his voice Melda heard weakness. Not a black mans weakness, born out of frustration fueled by things he could not change. In his voice she heard powerlessness, defeat, his childhood. After pleading with his demons, he would cry himself to sleep, as he had so often years ago. And it was she who held him, rocking him, wiping the snat from his nose, loving him as a mother loves his child. "
Other favorites in the Anthology would be De Man, Lessons At Alto Palo, Crochet Doll Unravels to name a few. This body of works has a spectacular range with a multi-layered voice. Definitely will revisit a couple stories in the future.
