Chris, small time drug dealer and general loser, only cares about the one person who's ever looked out for him, his Nan. So when the zombie apocalypse engulfs Nan's tower block, he wont let anything or anyone stop him from getting her to safety.
Armed with only a baseball bat and his attitude, can Chris fight his way through the zombie hoards and roaming gangs of feral youths to rescue his Nan from the Tower Block of the Dead?
And Nan? She'll just make herself a cup of tea and wait for things to calm down.
The Surviving The Fall series is a collection of stand alone novellettes, each following the struggles of a different group of characters in the perilous first days of the zombie apocalypse.
They don't have to be read in order - begin your journey into terror here…
She looked at Nan, “What’s going on?” Her voice shook. She was on the brink of tears. Nan rested her hand on Amy’s. “It’s the zombie apocalypse, dear. I’d best go get you a cup of tea.”
Chris and his misdirected, thuggish ways are introduced in this violent, non-stop zombie piece. It's the earlier piece to "Bridge of the Damned" from "After the Fall", and describes the meeting of Terry and his son Nate with Chris, Amy, and Nan. Nan is awesome, and I really enjoyed this no-nonsense, frying pan-wielding grandma who sacrifices everything in the end. I can understand why she is the only person whom Chris really and truly respects.
Nineteen-year-old Chris is a small-time drug dealer in Liverpool, and the story begins with him getting his ass handed to him by his supplier and local drug lord, who lives on the top floor of the high rise where his Nan also lives, a few floors down. After Chris' beat down and the introduction of Amy, the neighborhood girl on whom Chris has a crush, things quickly escalate into some fun and violent zombie action. Add the local thugs, a few guns, and Hummer envy, and you have a great action thrill ride of a story. Very recommended.
As usual Mr Cross delivers an exciting tale with lots of action and terror. The characters are regular people doing their best in an impossible situation. Exciting.
