Part of the "Zodiac" series, this is the story of a teenage girl born under the sign of Pisces - the characteristics of that sign leading her down twisting paths into a contemporary tale of mystery and horror with a touch of romance.
Jahnna N. Malcolm is the pen name for husband-and-wife team Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner. Together they've written four musicals, two movies, three CD-ROM games, and nearly one hundred books, including the popular series The Jewel Kingdom. They met in the theater and were married on the stage using Marlowe's famous love letter from "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" as their wedding vows.
Phoebe is a Cajun who lives in Louisiana. She has psychic abilities that have been passed down to her by her grandmother. They sometimes frighten her and make her an outcast at school. Her visions help her find out who destroyed her grandmother's garden. They come in to play when a boy at school who she likes, Mark, goes missing. She sets out to save him.
Mild but decent YA thriller offering, with some light gothic elements. It handles its supernatural aspect matter-of-factly and consistently. Phoebe is an easy character to get behind as she tries to deal rationally with a gift she isn't sure she wants, yet uses it to try to help others. It was fun and refreshing to see her take charge in order to rescue someone she cares about. You don't see the useless hand-wringing simpering morons in adult domestic thrillers doing that! It culminates in a decent chase through the Louisiana swamps. I feel it kind of ran out of steam, however, and the climax got sillier and sillier as it went along. Very quick, inoffensive read.
