I’m very torn over this review for two reasons. 1) I think this story had a lot of potential and that a less critical reader will see past much of what bothered me, and really love it. 2) It was offered free in exchange for an honest review and for some reason I feel guilty for not liking it more. I tried, I did. And there were parts that I did really like…with that said: 2.5 stars.
I definitely got off on the wrong foot with Three. I honestly felt like I started in the middle of something bigger. In the end, I feel like this read would have benefitted from being much longer with more background on all the main characters and how they end up together. Lauren is a web cam sub, to her boss, in another country for years? The ‘relationship’ is billed as an affair in the story synopsis, but I don’t see this as an affair. An arrangement maybe, but not an affair. Max seemed to have drawn emotional boundaries that she was expected to stick to, but she obviously had no intention of doing so. The sympathy that I should have felt for Max was overshadowed by the lack of depth in his background until it was almost too late. I would have loved for the story to begin with Max and his history. How did he end up in the arrangement with Lauren? How much did that mean to him? He is presented as a Dom, but so many of his decisions and actions go against that portrayal. I felt like I was left to assume that he is struggling with his dominance since his previous lover died? Was he a Dom to him? Lauren’s behavior also waivers. She is a sub, but she is extremely demanding and seems so uncertain of herself and her place in the world. She is a business woman, but her language use suggests she is very childlike. She is upending her whole life to move to the other side of the world for what? A one-product career? A possible relationship? I didn’t understand her goals which made it hard to appreciate her.
There were times when the flow evened out and the story began to evolve beyond the mechanics of the work and the sex, but they were a bit too short lived for me. I truly loved Max’s sense of command and control in business. He was smart and polished, well respected, but sensitive and caring at heart. Lauren’s observations on the scenery portray a beautiful setting. The writing in that respect is wonderful. I was able to really place myself at the villa, the restaurant, the office, etc.
The editing was good for the most part. My only challenge was the amount of exclamation points – were they really yelling at each other that often? In my opinion, it was overused to the point that it changed a lot of the emotion behind what was being said and felt.
Steve has a huge personality that just felt almost too much for this story. His playfulness was wonderful, but just out of place. Maybe if we had more time to adjust to his personality, but it was just there all of the sudden and he came across as only having one speed and one volume. Steve was blatantly sexual (fine, no problem) but, came across as crass at times, which Max should have found offensive. Steve was also presented in the publisher’s blurb as Lauren’s co-worker. While he ends up being such, he is a stranger to her when he arrives in Italy. He’s bi, and is presented by means of a BDSM reference which is far from professional. He hits on both Max and Lauren almost immediately, and fine, but are we in a hurry here? I don’t think I ever really knew Steve, but I bet I could have liked him a lot more.
The sex scenes were intense and detailed, but very mechanical. Instead of hearing Steve go through the steps of where he wanted to position Lauren or Max, we should have been visualizing the explanation of it. Instead of ‘Lauren, put your arm here and your leg there, now Max, turn this way or that….’, we should have read, ‘Steve guided Laurens body….’ Or ‘Lauren wrapped herself around Max as he slid his hand down Steve’s hip…’. The sex scenes with Max and Lauren early on were very hot and heavy and his Dominance was truly felt. I loved that! I do question all the alcohol before playing or having a scene. I find most authors (as well as lifestylers) refrain from drinking so much before interacting, and generally say as much in their stories. It’s definitely a choice and not a requirement, but it stood out to me. The synopsis also portrays dirty sex. One fisting scene (that was incredibly abrupt and short lived) does not make a ménage dirty. But hey, maybe that’s just me. I was waiting for something much more involved or sexually decadent. Dirty is quite the word to use to sell a book.
In the end, it was a good read, not great. The author's knowledge of Italy was an asset in portraying a beautiful backdrop. I’m a fan of the Novella and insta-love/sex stories, but this felt like it was meant to be a full length novel and therefore would have benefitted from a greater investment in the how these three eventually came together and fell for each other. Max was definitely the reason I kept reading. His character was the anchor of the story and he seemed to have the most to offer the reader.
The bottom line for me is, while some of the characters were interesting, the storyline of the trio coming together felt somewhat forced. This is probably a great story for a smaller, more specialized group of readers that had a checklist of things they want in a read. Nothing wrong with that!
