Elisabeth Kübler-Ross was a Swiss-American psychiatrist, a pioneer in near-death studies, and author of the internationally best-selling book, On Death and Dying (1969), where she first discussed her theory of the five stages of grief, also known as the "Kübler-Ross model". Kübler-Ross was a 2007 inductee into the National Women's Hall of Fame, was named by Time as one of the "100 Most Important Thinkers" of the 20th century and was the recipient of twenty honorary degrees. By July 1982, Kübler-Ross had taught 125,000 students in death and dying courses in colleges, seminaries, medical schools, hospitals, and social-work institutions. In 1970, she delivered an Ingersoll Lecture at Harvard University on the theme On Death and Dying. The New York Public Library also named, "On Death & Dying" as one of the "Library's Books of the Century."
this is a compilation of talks that kubler-ross has given at workshops around the world over a span of almost twenty years. as dry as on death and dying can be, death is of vital importance is juicy, rich, and robust.
over and over again in this book, kubler-ross comes back to the essential question raised by death: what does it mean to really live? she talks about life with the wisdom and honesty that sitting with over 20,000 dying people can give. she talks about what has made the difference between a peaceful death and a painful death for her patients, and what each of us can do to prepare now for a peaceful death when it comes.
she also talks extensively about spirituality, mysticism, and life after death, which i didn't expect. again, her experiences with the dying, her medical training, and her obvious intelligence, lend a credibility to her discussions of subjects that are tricky to discuss without sounding like a kook.
regardless of one's beliefs about spirituality, i think every person in the world should read this book. i have already bought two copies and given them as gifts, and i plan to stock up on them for numerous future occasions.
This book really helped me understand death and dying. Death scared me before and as a result I never really gave it much attention. My dad died recently and I felt like I was slapped in the face by death. I would wake up in the middle of the night and wondered where my dad had gone. The terrible pain and loss I felt was overwhelming so I went in search of answers to questions no one really could answer. This book was recommended to me by a friend who had recently lost her parents.
The book addressed a lot of questions I had and helped me to understand and process things better. I am still in mourning but I am better able to handle the grief knowing that my loved one is not alone.
I would recommend this book to anyone with an open mind who is seeking answers regarding death and dying. Now I am no longer afraid of death. I look forward to it when my time has come.
I consider this compendium of Conferences "Dying is of Vital Importance" is a jewel, because all the knowledge and experience of Elizabeth Kübler-Ross is transmitted spontaneously, pleasantly and very closely, in the colloquial style with which they were dictated. All the issues it deals with are of primary interest and need for a human being, since sooner or later we will all face death and life beyond.
Not a book of essays but edited transcripts of talks given. Material in each chapter is largely recycled examples and bullet points - like reading the same TedTalk 12 times. Not unimportant stuff but not engaging as a compilation.
Important topic but I struggled to connect with the message Elizabeth repeatedly emphasized: "God doesn't give you more than you can manage." While it sounds like a motivational line, it doesn't resonate in real-life. The recycled examples and the emphasis on the supernatural diminished the book's impact for me. It's a collection of transcribed TED Talks rather than a book.
Although it is an issue that most of us would like to ignore, it is a fabulous book, that everyone should read. Because death is part of life. It was not easy to read it, because it touched me deep inside. But I'm glad that I read it and I'm sure that there will be a time that I have to read it again. Read it in German.
