PURRRRFECT...

Since Hungry heart Wild striker I've been a great fan of sports anime/manga. Started with Slam dunk, Captain Tsubasa followed by Kuroko no Basuke and now Haikyuu and Free/Free Eternal summer. Brilliant volley manga and pretty realistic. A must watch/read for the sport fans.

Beside I adore Tanaka.

I might be entering my manga era, eh. Este estuvo super bonis.

Haikyu seems to be one of the most hyped mangas, especially in people around my age, so I was expecting to love this one, but unfortunately I didn't. It seems like the whole appeal to this manga for some people is the shipping of the two main characters, but they just seem to young to ship. Shipping aside, I didn't even like the characters. Hinata felt childish and immature while Kageyama was rude and arrogant. I liked Suga somewhat, but he's such a minor character that I'm not going to force myself to read a whole manga series just to see his brief moments. I'm going to give the anime a try and hopefully that goes better for me, but characters are what make or break a series for me and this one disappointed me.

10/10, good stuff, just like the anime. Even though it's just pictures, the way Furudate draws movement is very effective in accurately portraying the epicness of the sport. This is something I was worried about, that it wouldn't be as enjoyable as seeing everything animated.

The absolute best thing about this series, what makes it the powerhouse story that it is, what makes me and so many others love it so much, is the characters. Oh boy, how Furudate knows how to write characters!! There are literally episodes in the anime (ones not covered in this volume) where they introduce characters, tell you their stories, and make you like and sympathize with them to the point where even though they're against the main characters, you end up cheering for them. All of this. IN ONE EPISODE!! It's actually crazy how fast and effectively Furudate can develop such good, realistic, multidimensional characters. So yeah. The characters are probably the best part of the series. That and also the volleyball moments are FRICKEN AWESOME too. Need I say more? Start this series.

So far judging from just this first volume, the anime followed the manga to a T. They didn't skimp out on animating anything from this volume. Though I usually like reading manga to see extra scenes that were omitted from the anime, I really didn't mind it at all it this time because it's just so enjoyable I don't need any more, it's perfect as is.

Still judging just by this volume, if you're wondering whether to read the manga or watch the anime, right now it's really up to your personal preference because they're pretty identical. In later volumes who knows, this might change. But, as someone who has seen both seasons of the anime I can tell you it is an absolute blast, and I absolutely reccomend it.

If you're interested in my list of Top Sports Anime, I wrote it on the bottom of this book review, so feel free to check it out!

Updated Review 1/8/24: "I can't do this alone. I can't win by myself. Alone isn't good enough."

Perfection. Absolute perfection.

Coming back to this story after so long (and after reading the entire series) gives me such a huge appreciation of how the story was set up and that Kageyama is definitely NOT the "enemy" I once thought he was. I was able to see all the nuances of his character and see how much he's hurting, which is something I haven't been able to do in the past. While Hinata is the main character, it's interesting to see how Kageyama's story is equally set up, and know he will grow as an individual too.

However, that couldn't happen if it wasn’t for his senpai. Suga has always been amazing, but seeing how instrumental he is in Hinata AND Kageyama's life from the start was truly touching. He genuinely takes an investment in both of them and helps them grow as a player. Truly, Suga is an exceptional senpai!

And Hinata!! My best boy! I love him so much and seeing his dedication inspires and encourages me so much! It hurt to see how he had to make himself loudly known to not be forgotten in conversation or that he was there, but don't you worry, Hinata! You'll get an awesome nickname one day and everyone will acknowledge who you are!

SO excited and happy to be back with these characters!!

Original Review 1/14/21: HINATAAAAAAAAA!!! 😭😭😭😭😭

I forgot how truly inspiring his character is! Granted, I call him my real life senpai as he inspires me everyday, but reading from the beginning of the manga and then seeing how incredible he is makes me so moved. What a fantastic character he is and will never not be a Hinata fangirl!

I totally blown away by the detail in all the art! I don't know why (maybe because I really a bunch of shojo and it's more airy?), but it was absolutely stunning! I felt it took me longer to read this volume then usual because I was trying to take in everything as I didn't want to miss anything!

I love love love the story! Though I totally got mad at Kageyama for being such a jerk to Hinata! LOL! I totally forgot how rude/mean he is, but on the flip side, I forgot how very awesome Tanaka is. He's always been a great character, but he really stands out and makes you want to cheer for him since the beginning.

This was such a fantastic first volume! I absolutely loved it and can't wait to keep reading!!

Reread: 04/11/2023

Rereading it after 3 years and I love this manga a lot and I love how it focuses on the passion and love for Volleyball and having watched the anime and all, its kinda nostalgic rereading it, just the love for the sport they have is amazing and then also lessons for teamwork and a drive and love for the thing you're doing.. its just inspiring on so many levels and it has so many awesome characters like here its Hinata and Kageyama and trust me you will just love these from the get go!! <3

____________________________________________________________________________
This volume was so good, probably one of the best starts! We pick up with this guy Shoyo Hinata who wants to be a volley player but his junior high school doesn't have the players, facility for it despite it he works hard to be one little giant! But then its the junior tournament where he meets Kageyama whose one of the best setters, obv they lose but its their first meet and we pick up with Karasuno High school and the two coming there, Hinata is shocked to see Kageyama there but there is some fight between them. Daichi, Suga and Tanaka enter and see them, and the cap daichi first order is they need to improve their teamwork and win a match in order to gain access to the club and its a fascinating read seeing them come together and form a great team! Tsuki comes in too and its a 3 on 3 match and while it looks like Hinata will lose, there we see the birth of that legendary partnership of the setter and spiker! It was such a great volume, intro was cool, story is in high gear already and a lot of great things to come and instantly likeable characters and the art is >>!

This was precious
Hinata's determination literally made this manga.

Hinata was such a heartwarming and soft character but his determination and passion for volleyball is what really made this manga. Although I did enjoy the other characters in this manga such as Kageyama, and Tanaka. The characters that really stood out were Kageyama and Hinata. I know, shocking... especially since they're the main characters ;) But anyhow I can't wait to go through the series and see the rivalry! This is going to be FUN.

I love reading sports mangas but most of them are baseball-related. This is the first manga (about volleyball) that I read and I love it. What I love most about this is the lead character and how he is not some pansy and coward hero but because he started-out strong despite his ultimate weakness- his height.

****Actual Rating 4.5****

So aside from this being one of my friend’s favorite manga and anime series and that it revolves around volleyball, I knew little to nothing about it or what to expect aside that I was curious and wanted to try it for myself (because I am just so fun like that *grins wickedly*).

And honestly? If the series continues on like this or somehow gets better I’m SOLD. Over a story about VOLLEYBALL no less! (I’ve played volleyball before, but like most sports I stink at it and it caused me lots of pain. Moving on)

Hinata is honestly a little ball of energy, light, and passion and I love him! (don’t you dare hurt him, mister mangaka) He doesn’t give up no matter what or who throws absolute crap in his face and honestly I need to learn from that and become more like him. He’s so inspiring!

Though on the flip side I…don’t like Kageyama. He’s a total jerk! Oh my GOSH I want to slap him! I have a feeling if I watched the anime I’d be throwing things at the screen whenever he shows up, lol. Hopefully he has some kind of redemption arc though at this rate he’s going to have to do a LOT in order for me to like him even a tiny bit.

I don’t have much to say about the other characters since I haven’t spent much time with them yet, but they seem well rounded though I don’t know what Glasses Dude’s deal is though I sense he’s also got some baggage he’s hiding.

The art is really great, the action shots especially—you can almost FEEL the movement and action behind the characters which is awesome!

I’m looking forward to reading the next volume (whenever the library decides to send it my way, that is) and I REALLY hope I keep liking it and that it gets better and better. A great first volume!

It's been so long since I read a sports manga! This one is really fun! It gets right into the story very quickly. It follows Shoyo Hinata, a boy who is short but very good at jumping, who wants nothing more than to play volleyball. His middle school doesn't have a team but he manages to scrape together enough friends to enter exactly one competitive game. His little rag tag bunch is beat by a team with an ace player: Tobio Kageyama, who has the ironic nickname "King of the Court", because of both his talents but also his bad temper. When Hinata gets to high school he's so excited to finally be part of a real team. Imagine his surprise when he learns that none other than Kageyama is on the team too! I'm definitely going to keep going with this series, which is all available to read online for free here: https://ww4.readhaikyuu.com/

OKAY THE HYPE FOR THIS SERIES IS WELL DESERVED!!! it's the first volume out of like 40 something yet we already have some good character development, we know the main plot and can see it being developed, and it's overall incredibly entertaining!! Tobio Kageyama is the character i'm already obsessed with!

This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga

”You don’t win alone.
That’s just how it is.”

READ FOR: best character developments and themes that I have ever encountered
READING LEVEL: Level 1-3 out of 5

*All of my reviews are as spoiler-free as possible unless stated otherwise*

I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.

It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.

When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.

description

PLOT: ★★★★★
The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.

ART STYLE: ★★★★★
The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.

description

CHARACTERS: ★★★★★
The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.

The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.

This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.

*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++

Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE

description
I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^

THEMES: ★★★★★
Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper.

I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++

The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.

description

PACING: ★★★★★
THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.

It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)

description

PAGE TURNER: ★★★★★

You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)

I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.

This series is an absolute joy. It follows two boys who absolutely love volleyball. Shoyo Hinata fell in love with it the day he saw a short player known as the little giant compete on television and he tries to do everything he can to become the best player despite his height. He applies to the same school the little giant went to, but he runs into Tobio Kageyama, a volleyball prodigy, who is too self-focused to work well on a team. They butt heads constantly but eventually become a volleyball duo to be feared. The team is no longer the team it used to be when the little giant played, but working together all the boys sharpen their skills to return to the team to its former glory.

I never thought I'd become this invested in fictional volleyball, but this series is just so captivating. It focuses solely on the games and the characters' growth as players and as a team. It goes beyond just the two main characters. It shows the rest of the team and their struggles as well as the opposing teams and players. Furudate knows how to give all his characters well-developed backgrounds and he makes you care about nearly every character, even ones that only appear once. I have cried and laughed many times while reading this series and I highly recommend it.
