The Success Intersection: What Happens When Your Talent Meets Your Passion

Rate this book
From the age of seven, Pat Williams's greatest passion was baseball. However, after two years in the minors, he had to admit it was not his greatest talent, and his career as a professional baseball player was at a dead end. But a phenomenally successful career in sports was just beginning. When he combined his passion for sports with his greatest talents--leadership, salesmanship, and promotion--he found his success intersection.

"When your greatest talent intersects with your greatest passion," says Williams, "you have discovered your sweet spot in life." It's the spot that will result in the greatest personal success and satisfaction and the greatest impact on the world. Williams shows readers how to

- identify their greatest talent
- pursue their greatest passion
- multiply their efforts through teamwork

Readers will discover how to maximize their natural gifting, focus their enthusiasm, and leverage their talent and passion into a lifetime of success.

I finished this book a long, long time ago, but I kept it on my digital shelf forever to inspire myself to continue on my journey of ascending through all of life's challenges!

I had found it rather well laid out, from what I recall, and extremely effective in making you identify what made you get up out of bed in the morning and pursue to the height of your abilities. Are you best at that C major arpeggio? Make those arpeggios soar triumphantly through the rooftops! Are you the best at descaling the office coffee maker? Make sure that nobody in the complex gets disgusting grungy yuck from that thing! Are you best at taking a nap? Dream well.
This book made me want to get my summa cum laude in whatever it was again! (Of course, it didn't happen, I had a bit of a setback and REFUSE TO ACCEPT I NEED TIME AND A HALF, but MAYBE NEXT TIME, you NEVER KNOW...)

Now, however, it is time to tell you this is an exciting and empowering book, even with all of the sports references, and it makes you want to get yourself "off your dink to think" as my professor would say. So please, do your thing, whatever it may be!

Great book. Pat has taken the time to cite the success stories of some of the most influential people in our lifetime, such as Steve Jobs, John Urschel and Pete Sampras to mention a few. He has taken the time to research and found great illustrations of what it means to have a passion behind your talent.

Thoughts:

The main objective of this book is that success comes at the point where talent and passion intersect. What stuck out to me from Pat Williams about talent and passion are:

- Talent: Many people have talent. There are many talented 10-year-olds playing the piano that are nowhere to be seen now, talented singers who become record store cashiers, and young painters who now only visit galleries. This is unfulfilled potential. They only had talent and didn’t find their passion.

- Passion: Have immense passion but don’t have as much talent as the person next to you? If you create your vision and work hard everyday, you will surpass them. Focus your passion to set you apart and fuel you.

Pat Williams has a huge love of baseball and sports. At first I thought I wasn’t going to make it through the whole book because I’m not a huge sports enthusiast. I completely understand why being successful at a sport translates into success habits, but constant sport references don’t really hold my attention.

However, Williams was able to use other references and stories that didn’t revolve around sports which kept the book moving for me.

Williams opens the chapters with some background and stories, then finishes off the second half of each chapter with numbered strategy steps. Although the steps were lengthy due to added stories within, they at least gave the reader a bit more structure that I felt enhanced the book.

Last Words:

Williams uses many sport references (which makes sense knowing his background and passion) but the steps he takes you through to focus your talent and passion are great.

Once again Pat has ignited my flame to a enormous blaze--his books are like adding fuel to the fire. In 3 hours I will be running my first marathon--so part of my daily success that Pat taught me was the power of reading. So today I finished up this magnificent novel-I will complete 26.2 miles for a dear friend, who is a breast-cancer survivor. As Pat noted in this book, successful teams are fueled by passion and talent--so let this book ignite your flame, let it guide you on your journey instead of looking down from 30,000 feet-this book will share stories that will allow you to narrow your gifts to pin point accuracy as a heat seeking missile will do. Read all of Pat's books--they are truly amazing.
