This is the amazing and riveting story of Brother Andrew.
I will give a warning to other people as sensitive as I am, that the cruelty humans are capable of and the terrible things that happen during war were described in several places, and that there are some things that I wish I didn’t have in my head. But I would definitely recommend it anyway. I’m very glad I did read it, because it is wonderful to see God’s work being carried out in amazing ways.

the young reader’s edition was an accident but I’m not mad about it. I was challenged many times, wondering if I would’ve believed God for some of the crazy things that happened in this book. this was a sweet, easy read.

It is so important for believers to know and therefore be strengthened by the stories of the Lord's faithfulness. This is an amazing true tale which gave me a shot of hope where faith has been limping along like Brother Andrew's war-torn foot. After a failed missionary attempt, I have spent years struggling with the aftermath of how that failure affected my faith. Reading this book has reawakened my trust in the Lord and strengthened my soul.

Astonishing anecdotes of complete trust in the Savior repeatedly brought tears to my eyes. I want to trust God and love people like Brother Andrew does.

Having read (and loved) his story in the original adult version many years ago, I scheduled this youth edition into my teens' homeschool reading this year and thought I'd give it a quick read myself. I'm so very thankful to have done so. Highly, highly recommended!

Note: there is nothing about this that would indicate it has been "dumbed down" for young readers. It was well-written and did not speak down at all. Kids, teens, and adults alike should find it gripping and edifying. And with a manageable page count, it's a great alternative to the original book for those short on time or with learning struggles who may be intimidated by denser books.

It has been at least 30 years since I read God's Smuggler, and I can't remember anything about it. That means I have no idea how different this young reader's edition is from the original. This is an abridged version, so it is obvious that it is shorter than the original.

This is an awesome story, made even more so by it being true. I tend to read a lot of Christian suspense novels, and this book kept my attention as much as one of those do. I was encouraged and convicted as I read the many stories related in the book, and of how strong the faith was of Brother Andrew and those helping him. It is truly amazing how often Bibles were smuggled right under the noses of guards and others when they were practically in plain sight. Not to leave out the miraculous way Brother Andrew's schooling and even his house were paid for.

The book is also a sobering reminder that not everyone is free to worship as we are, and not everyone has access to Bibles as we do here in America. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and though I don't consider the reading level "dumbed down", for lack of a better term, the targeted age group (9-12) will definitely enjoy it. As will older kids and adults.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Very good for what it is. A short, young readers overview of Brother Andrew. The story is inspiring, and it woke me up to the major heartache in the communist regimes. That was not very long ago and people really suffered in eastern Europe.

I really loved the storyline and the meaning but I personally found it hard to get into. I fell like the book is a little long winded and goes into extreme detail on thing that the extra detail wasn’t needed, but overall I loved the book and I would recommend it to anyone

What a moving story of an incredible man with incredible faith. I read it aloud to all my children- ages 15, 11, and 9. We learned so much about history and the communist regimes in Europe. No one can threaten God and his workers with their mission to spread the gospel. We were only sad that the book ended when I know there were many more stories of God working that he had to tell. Plus we were hoping there was a movie made about his work but unfortunately there wasn’t. Definitely recommend!

God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew with John and Elizabeth Sherrill: Young Reader's Edition is quite an interesting read.
It gives you an overview of the life of 'Brother Andrew, as he later became known, he was a Bible smuggler.

Andrew, like everyone, did not start out life as a Christian, he was struggling with life-purpose into his early adulthood. He became a Christian and had a growing desire for knowledge of the Word of God and an eagerness to put into practice what he learned and to share the Gospel with others.

After becoming a Christian, Andrew became aware of, and concerned with the peril of churches in countries that were under communist rule. He found that the Bible, in many of those countries, was scarce and hard to obtain, despite the idea being touted by the communists that they promoted freedom of religion. In some countries there were no Bibles being printed, in others there were plenty of Bibles available but hardly anyone was interested in owning one, and in one country the communists advertised that they were printing their own translation of the Bible, but they delayed its publication and did not allow any other publication of Bibles. Andrew sees a ministry opportunity in this need for Bibles and starts smuggling Bibles into those countries. This book details many of the ways that God protected Andrew and his co-workers in their getting the Bibles past the various country borders.

I do need to mention a couple of things that I didn't feel comfortable with the prophetic 'impressions' that Andrew and other people had about certain things: Feeling positive that God would give a car, or getting a confident thought that God would not let authorities harm them on a certain day. How does one know that one's confidence is in God at those moments and not merely in one's own feelings/desires? Perhaps this may be considered a drastic example, but what if I am locked up in jail for being a Christian and I'm not given any food. I will think that I need food, I may even have an impression that God will supply it, but what if it turns out that God wants me to starve, die and be with Him? That was my problem, and the fact that Andrew never seemed to believe that God would ever say "no" to anything he asked (like getting a helpmeet for instance). I know that they didn't mean it this way but it could come across to a kid as if God will give you any material, earth-based thing for which you ask.

But other than those things I really liked the book. One of my favorite parts to read was of a time before Andrew became a Bible smuggler. He went to a missionary training school, and quite a unique one! The school actually sounded like a real mission school based on faith in God and His provision rather than teaching potential missionaries to solicit people for funds and help. "The real purpose of this training….is to teach our students that they can trust God to do what He said. He would do……They cannot be effective if they are afraid or if they doubt that God really means what He says in His Word." On their practice Evangelistic trips they would be sent out with only one pound, and would rely upon God to supply their needs and His supplying did not merely take the form of money, it also took the form of food and clothes being given at just the right time. That seems to be a more biblical form of missionary activity than what one sees nowadays, and more faith-based. I know that all missionaries are not like this, but many come across as if they focus on money and the help of people If they really are called to the mission field, God will give the needed supplies even without them going to people for help. So I was very refreshed to see the perspective of the people in this book in regards to their trust in God to supply all their needs.

I believe that I would have liked this account a lot as a kid and a teenager. It was very well written, intriguing and it left me wanting more. It is quite fascinating to see what God has done in the lives of other Christians and to see the various circumstances God put them in in order to conform them to the image of Christ and to bring the Gospel to other people. I think that this was an abridgment of the original work and so one can probably find an unabridged copy of this account
if one wants to learn more (which I will probably end up doing).

Many thanks to the folks at Cross Focused Reviews for the free review copy!

Accidentally read the “young reader’s edition” by mistake… I’m sure the full edition would have been better as the text certainly felt watered down and simplified in it’s utterances. Still, incredible and touching story about a man of faith. A few of the points that truly resonated and impressed me.

1. The missionary seminary in Glasgow that would force it’s trainees to go out on local missions with only one pound and without being able to ask for money. This would teach them to trust in the faithfulness of God for all of their sustenance. Brother Andrew learned this lesson well and constantly relied and even looked forward to seeing how God would provide for him in bleak circumstances.

2. Brother Andrew’s flexibility when it came to his Christian living. For example, even though he never borrowed money as a principle he was able to follow the Lord when it came to him buying a house and needing to borrow money. Then when his car broke down in Austria and he needed to have men from the pub help him get his car out of the mud. After they helped him get his car out they insisted on him having a beer with them, and even though by principle he did not drink as a Christian, he realized the Lord in Him was leading him to just drink the beer they had bought him to take care of them. Lastly, in his living he at first was living in utter poverty tithing away almost all that came in to go towards the work; but the Lord touched him that His wife and family needed to be in more than just poverty so he went ahead and took care of them in a proper way.

3. The willingness he had to sacrifice and ability to not shy away from challenging circumstance.

Intense. Edge-of-your-seat action. Heart-wrenching. Each of these three Praises only scratch the surface of how impactful God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew with John and Elizabeth Sherrill produced by chosen books actually is.
The story of brother Andrew is one you may not be familiar with. During the Cold War the spread of the Gospel had been hindered in Eastern Europe for communism is incompatible with Christianity. Yet when the world seems at its darkest Christ will shine its brightest. God called a man to not only deliver God’s word to those who need it but to share the gospel and melt the hearts of his enemies. The book God’s Smuggler is a autobiography of brother Andrew’s life. Now until recently brother Andrew’s story had been written at a popular level inaccessible to some. In typical fashion Chosen Publications saw this need and created a young readers edition of this impactful book. While it is an abridgment of the original work any late Elementary or early middle school age child will find this book gripping and impactful. Part of the gripping nature of this Edition is due to the addition of drawings throughout the book. These drawings bring the reader into the story making it real to them. I highly recommend this book.

I first read GOD'S SMUGGLER years ago, so it was good to re-read the book. Even though this edition is the "Young Reader's Edition," I think many adults will also appreciate the concise length.

It's easy to forget how dangerous it was to go behind the "Iron Curtain." The book captures the excitement and danger of smuggling Bibles and tracts to various countries in Eastern Europe, as well as to Russian. (For example, in the chapter, "For Russian with Love.") Many of the stories involve his worn Volkswagen beetle, which one mechanic claimed could only be running through God's miraculous intervention.

I found the book to be a quick, fun read. The illustrations also make the stories come alive, by depicting the soldiers standing close by with guns at hand. Brother Andrew is ever-optimistic about what God will do in your life. For instance, in describing how he obtained his driving license, he quotes a friend, "That's the excitement in obedience. . . Finding out later what God had in mind."

All in all, I found GOD'S SMUGGLER to be an inspiring book, offering encouragement to Christians interested in spreading the Gospel. I had forgotten that Brother Andrew was actually from the Netherlands.

Biographies are an important and much needed way to learn about others, particularly those who were bold and courageous in their faith.

God's Smuggler Brother Andrew with John and Elizabeth Sherrill is one such story. Brother Andrew was one who risked his life to bring Bible and the gospel behind the Iron Curtain.

With only the protection of God, Brother Andrew traveled to places where most would not. In these places, to merely talk about God was forbidden and could be cause for death.

Yet God repeatedly protected him, closing the eyes of military police and the government and made a way for him to bring hope into the darkest of places. He became known as "God's Smuggler".

This book is filled with many exciting stories which beautifully illustrate the favor God brought to each of his journeys.

I first read God's Smuggler as a teenager years ago and am glad there is now a concise version for young readers. This version is especially written for young readers. ages 9 - 12. It is a book sure to hold the interest of any reader, inspiring them to trust God and live boldly.

I read the original version of this book a few years ago and was encouraged by the work God accomplishes when His children are faithful. This edition is no less impactful despite being abridged. It is a blessing to read of men such as Brother Andrew who did not do everything correctly; this man, despite countless instances of God meeting his needs, still dealt with doubts and fears. Comparing the circumstances he operated under and those many of us face, I am ashamed of the lack of effort I put into reaching those who are daily available to me.

I don't recall this original book being especially scary, although there are events in this Young Reader's Edition that might be intense for elementary children. Still, I would recommend all Christians read a version of this book and then seek the Lord's will as to where they can best serve Him.

Note, I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest appraisal and was not obligated to provide a positive review.

"God's Smuggler" by Brother Andrew, John and Elizabeth Sherrill is an amazingly beautiful story. It's thrilling, heartbreaking and spirit encouraging. Andrew and the others that helped him, risked so much to do the will of God. They put their lives on the line, spent months away from their wives and families.
This book has blessed me greatly. Brother Andrew's story challenges you.

What will you do for God?
Will you follow His calling?

I loved "God's Smuggler" and HIGHLY recommend it!

This is the second Young Readers book that I have read recently, and I really do enjoy them. It was truly inspirational to hear this man's story and to see how putting his trust so fully in God took him to places and helped him develop these relationships he never would have otherwise been able to even imagine. At the end I was amazed to hear that he continued his missions into the Middle East and just continues to put his life on the line for the Lord. Pretty amazing story!

What a great book. It was mentioned in Victorious, the life of Corrie ten Boom. I took a chance and ordered a copy which proved to be an excellent read. I highly recommend it. It is the story of Brother Andrew who made it his life mission to smuggle Bibles into countries where they were forbidden. Supporting the Christians and their churches by providing the written word at a time when it was illegal.

Such an encouraging testimony! I bought this Young Reader’s Edition of God’s Smuggler to give to my son in his Easter basket but decided to read it myself first. It was amazing! I have never read the unabridged version so I can’t speak to the differences in the two books but as an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Brother Andrew’s story!

The power of God demonstrated

This book is so inspiring and eye opening. Time after time Brother Andrew was protected by God because he was doing the Lord’s work to spread the Gospel of Christ in communism countries. Gives much eye opening practices in these countries and also how they manipulate young people into thinking communism and socialism is good.
No doubt Brother Andrew and many others on his team were in danger many times but protected by God and many times God supernaturally blessed them with funds to do His work and get the Bible into these countries.

His story is amazing, but would have liked more details in some regards, but perhaps the adult version has more. The writing was dated, but did not detract too much from the story. Really enjoyed reading about all the miracles that happened as he followed what he felt he was called to do.

This is the story of Brother Andrew and his life dedication of bringing Bibles to people behind the iron curtain post WWII. He experienced many miracles doing this work. His firm faith that the Lord would provide, protect and guide I believe is why his experiences were so profound. It was an eye opening story of life under communism!
