Disclaimer: I am friends with the author; however, I purchased a hardcopy version of this book for full price.

This book picks up immediately after the events of Canyon Shadows, but is easily read as a stand-alone. It immediately grabbed me and sucked me in, with events that are all present-day and much narrower in focus.

This is an apocalyptic scenario played out in real-time, in both a suburban and very rural setting. Toby and his family are thrust to the fore-front due to a certain facet of his family line, and the very realistic issues of lack of communication and access to info about the greater world are starkly portrayed. Even so, I had no time to wish for a bigger scope of information because of how deftly Langille focuses on this one family.

Toby is a man pushed to his literal limits — physically, emotionally, psychologically. Readers can clearly identify with his goal, which makes the final scene all the more heart-rending. My dual hopes for the next book in this series are more information about the bigger picture of events and a continuation of Toby’s story line.

Be warned: This is a dark fantasy that regularly verges into horror territory. Langille does not skimp on the gruesome and visceral in his descriptions, though it’s always to good effect rather than gratuitous.

(Why not 5 stars? Some distracting formatting issues made certain conversations difficult to parse.)

This was my first time first time reading anything by C.R.Langille and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this great story. C.R.Langille has given us a story that sucks you in and keeps you there from start to finish and will leave you wanting more, this story is filled with demons, shadows of the night, and just one person stands in the way. This is Tobias aka "Toby" story.Toby is heading out like he does every year with three of his buddies to do some camping in the wild, to hunt and fish. But what they don't know is now it's going to be a race of survive of the woods. As a terrible supernatural storm begins to erupt across the lands, and nightmares becomes real. And the shadows begin to take on life, and a persons deepest fears become real, and the dead rise and are taken over by the demons and they have a horrible thirst for fear and anger. And then all hell is about to break loose. But only Toby stands in their way ,he has this power that he doesn't understand as of now. Well he be able to make it back to his loving family before it's to late, and can he save them? I could go on and tell you more about this great story .but that would spoil it for you. i highly recommend that you read this great story .you won't be disappointed.

I received Consequence by C. R. Langille for free in return for an honest review.

This story is a dystopian tale of sorts. Some guys go hunting, and in the midst of their hunting trip there's a kind of what can best be described as an electric tornado. All power is lost, there are balls of energy coming out of splits in the earth and there are creatures. the creatures manifest themselves in houses, beginning with a dragging noise and then loud thumps, and a disembodied voice claiming that they will play with the inhabitants.
In the forest, the hunting party is separated and are unable to find one another, the radio is also compromised. An elk that one of them shot appears to have be rendered by deep claw marks and dead, but later on tracks in the mud indicate that it has risen up and plodded drunkenly away.

I found this to be interesting, with well thought out characters and a compelling story, however, my background in proofreading and copy-editing told me it needed to be edited, with some jumbled tenses, and incorrect descriptors. For example, "the sunlight shined on him" instead of 'shone".

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Tobias Warner of Salt Lake City, Utah leaves his family for a hunting trip. He soon discovers, however, that his buddies have been possessed and transformed by evil forces into terrible creatures, and that he has peculiar powers they want on their side. Back home, Linda, his wife, Sebastian, his son, and his father run into a paranormal investigator trying to restore order as their world unravels into supernatural chaos. In the end, Tobias faces losing his family to the evil forces driving the apocalypse, or losing his soul by drawing on the unnatural abilities he’s been resisting to save them.

This book is a gory, bizarre, action-packed adventure that fans of horror–and the Salt Lake Valley–will enjoy. Langille’s apocalyptic tale taps into the human compulsion to defend those closest to us in heart and blood, and those we most fear to lose: our family. In the words oft repeated by his characters, “You Reap What You Sew.” So, be careful what you sew…you might reap destruction!

If this was a film, it would definitely scare the daylights outta me!
Demons, shadows of the nights, and only one person who stands in the way.
Tobias aka Toby will head out like he does every year with his three friends. To camp in the wild, hunt and fish. Only they don't realize it will now be a race to survive the woods. As a supernatural storm erupts across the land. Nightmares will become real, shadows will take life, your deepest fears will take life and the dead will rise being taken over by demons with a thirst for fear and anger. All hell is about to break loose. And only Toby stands in their way, with a power he yet has to understand. Now if only he can make it to his family in time to save them? And what of the strange man in the duct tape coat, will he be able to help any?

This is the first book I've read by this author. If you like Stephen King, you will LOVE this. From the first sentence I was addicted. I couldn't put it down. I tried not to read close to bed time but it didn't matter because I had nightmares anyway! Thanks a lot Mr. Langille! You did your job well. This is so creepy and scared the crap out of me. I can just see myself stuck far away from home and loved ones with no kind of contact and an apocalypse like thing happening. This whole story was like the end of time. A really brilliant read that messes with your mind! I loved it. It really makes you think about your loved ones and mankind and never taking anything or anyone for granted.

Why doesn't Goodreads allow half stars! This one needs 4.5, with my only complaint being that, while I have a good understanding of the dynamics of the world, I need to understand the magics in play more. The story was great, there were various pop-culture nods without being too distracting to the story. I also really found myself enjoying the morality questions that were presented throughout the book. If you enjoy dark urban fantasy/horror I would recommend this book.
