This is a fabulous resource that provides information on all of the presidents, including Donald Trump. The presidents are arranged in chronological order and the information provided is their number (order), years in office, political party, a photograph or illustration of them, a brief synopsis about their life, and then there is a small box that shows a "Data File," which includes where and when they were born, when they died, when they were inaugurated as president (and their age at the time of inauguration), and a couple of key dates during their presidency. If there are other articles tied to their presidency in this book, then those topics and their page numbers are at the bottom. There is also a small circle with a "fun fact" about each president on the page.

There is another "chapter" on Notable First Ladies. Included here are: Abigail Adams, Dolley Madison, Edith Wilson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama. They, like their husbands have the same info. included in their "portrait."

There are also chapters on "The Constitution and the Presidency" and "Presidential Places and Vehicles." This last chapter I found to be most fascinating because beyond Air Force One and Marine Force One (chopper), there is also Ground Force One, which is a bus and Cadillac One.

In summer 1960, when I was ten years-old, my father bought a book called "Pictorial History of American Presidents", by John and Alice Durant. I would read a chapter every day when I came home from school during that autumn, and by the time the Presidential elections took place on 8 November, I had memorized the names of every president and knew the essential data of their presidencies. I was looking forward to the authors adding material of JFK, but they never did. The book started with George Washington and ended with Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Thinking of my grandnephews and nieces, I have wanted to find a similar resource for them, where they could have a pictorial presentation of all the U.S. Presidents. During the Covid19 Pandemic I found that the DK coordinated with the Smithsonian in Washington to publish such a book in 2017. I bought a copy. After the 2020 elections I wanted to see if DK would update their volume and they did in 2021, so I purchased the new edition as well.
This book offers a history of the life and times of each and every U.S. President. The illustrations are contemporary for each presidency, as if to transport the reader into the very era in which each administration unfolded. It is much briefer than the Durant's 1958 volume, but complete. The book ends with portraits of some of the better known First Ladies as well.
"The Presidents Visual Encyclopedia" is published as a "Children's Visual Encyclopedia", but I have given copies to a few of my adult friends who found the volume helpful and, in fact, enjoyable. One friend, a doctor, told me that he knew very little about the presidents who were in office before his own birth, but that he had enjoyed seeing the development of U.S. history and culture through the pictorial account of the lives and experiences of all the men who served the country as presidents from the beginning of the republic until now. "I go back portions every day," he told me.
London-based D.K. Publishing is now the world's leading illustrated reference publisher. Their editors do not disappoint. What they offer as historical material in their small presidential encyclopedia for children is top shelf.

The President’s Visual Encyclopedia is full of fun, interesting, and informative facts about everything presidential. The encyclopedia includes 3-4 pages of information on all 45 of our nation’s presidents from Washington to Trump, 20 pages of information about notable first ladies, 30 pages of information on the Constitution as it relates to the office of President, and another 18 pages covering presidential places and vehicles such as Camp David and Air Force One. As an added bonus, there are an additional 10 pages of information about political parties, Vice President’s, noteworthy elections, and a break down of Presidents by their home state. This book is sure to satisfy a young reader’s curiosity about the Executive branch of our government.

The text is appropriate for upper elementary through middle school aged students. High School students may find the text too brief, and lower elementary students may find the text and information overwhelming.

The illustrations are photographs, captioned political cartoons, maps, and timelines. The illustrations support the text, but do not carry all the weight of presenting the information.
This book has most of the elements of non-fiction informational books such as table of contents, glossary, and index but does not contain a reference page. There is an acknowledgment page which gives credit for the photos in the book but the sources for the text remain unclear. If I had to guess I would guess that since the Smithsonian published the book, there archives are the source of the text information.

Good book. Gives a short overview of all presidents and key dates of their accomplishments.. Have to laugh.. Trump's key dates consist of his "development" of hotel; opening his casino, entering race for Reform Party in 2010; and nomination for president of US. And I'm fairly sure the picture of him is the one where his fingers were elongated by photo manipulation.

The book also mentions several outstanding First Ladies, describes the different transportation that a US President has, describes several meaningful buildings attached to the presidency, highlights the Bill of Rights. Has some great information.

The visuals in the book are a WOW and perfect to pull in young readers and then they can learn more details about each president, some first ladies, the constitutional and more. Excited to share with my 8-year-old grandson who is obsessed with the presidents. He's obsessed with vehicles too so he'll love the section on the presidents' vehicles (Cadillac One, Air Force One, Marine One). Brings me back to my childhood days when I would spend hours pouring over our encyclopedias and their yearly update books...the fun was going in and out and reading this and that--never from the beginning to the end...that's how I envision kids using this visual encyclopedia.

This book is methodical, informative and illustrative of the U.S presidents, which enables neophytes to have a grasp of American presidents before further research in this topic by means of other books. (e.g. 45 Đời Tổng Thống Hoa Kỳ)

Saw this one come through the library and decided to pick it up. History was one of my worst subjects in school and I hardly retained any of that info. It was nice to be able to read this (especially at a younger level) and actually be interested in it. I think this is a perfect book for kids (or adults!!) who think history is too boring. It certainly kept my attention!

Very good if you just want a quick speed read for our presidents. It may be a disappointment for people who might want an in depth analysis of the presidents, but this is for younger readers. I just wanted a quick speed read to kind of refresh my memory. Other than that, I appreciate that the author had a generally unbiased view of the U.S presidents.

This book only had a 2pager for each president and the most of the space is taken by a picture. The information is limited to dates and a few odd facts. I did not find it informative enough for my elementary school children.

This book makes me feel like a happy felling. My parents went to Boston and learned about the Boston tea party and other history stuff. My dad read a lot about Boston now and it makes me want to now. He also reads a lot about Presidents too so I got this book at the library.

A pretty good book about the presidents with some of the most important events they dealt with during their presidency. I learned a lot of things that I didn't know. I think this would be a good start to learn more about an important job in the US.

NonFiction/Twin Text Entry #2

History is one of my favorite genres, so that is why I chose a book about Presidents. The book has a part for every President we have ever had, notable figures, and much more. I remember as a young student my teachers challenging us to learn everything we could about the Presidents and to see if we could recite their names in order. Learning about the Presidents is a huge part of our Nation's history, therefore I think this book gets the job done.

The fiction book I paired this text with was The Magic Tree House Merlin Missions #19 Abe Lincoln At Last by Mary Pope Osborne. The copyright year for this book is 2011. The genre for this specific book is fantasy. I chose this book because I loved the Magic Tree House books as a child. They are an easy read but yet are still chapter books. Even though this book is fiction, it makes reference back to the nonfiction text because it has the main characters, Jack and Annie, dressed in the clothes of the 1860s.

I would recommend these two texts be read by intermediate grade level readers (grades 3-6).
