Ava Lost Souls. Books 1-3. An urban fantasy adventure. ~Best read after the original Ava Delaney series~ The backdrop may be grim, but Dublin city has become the centre of change. And as the humans and supernaturals figure out how to live in each other’s worlds, the person who forced that change has quietly stepped aside for a peaceful life. Ava Delaney is still trying to adjust to her own altered existence when a tainted nephal turns up on her doorstep, apparently on the run from the monster who changed Ava’s life before she was even born. But she’s not supposed to interfere, even for the lost souls she’s vowed to help. But as the first vampire leaves death in his wake, and Ava becomes an easy target to blame, she realises she has to take care of business once again. There are more secrets hidden in the shadows, more voices just waiting to be heard, and obedience has never been Ava’s thing. Only one thing is for for people like Ava Delaney, there’s no such thing as a peaceful life. Ava’s been protecting her shifter friend from the alpha for months, but now he’s managed to come up with a brand new excuse to take Esther, and the Senate have turned their backs on her completely. While Ava works to find a way to keep Esther out of Mac’s reach for good, a series of violent murders put everyone in the cul-de-sac under suspicion. An entire race will be exterminated the real culprits aren’t found, and people like Ava just might be next on the soon-to-be-extinct list. Ava’s been trying to help her past and her future co-exist, but when it all goes wrong, she’s barely able to take a breath when the next drama begins, and she begins to wonder about her string of bad luck. Tensions are already running high when evidence of slavery appears on Ava’s doorstep, quickly followed by an unwelcome blast from the past with news that forces her to rethink where her trust lies. The only thing Ava knows for sure is that it’s time to finish cleaning up the mess that started with Fionnuala because bad luck is catching, and everyone she cares about is affected.
This series was as good as the first. The only problem that I had with it was that it dragged out the love triangle in Ava's conflict. Several times it could have stopped but it didn't. In the end, her reasonings didn't even make sense. It left it open that something else was coming but the series has ended. It has three stand alone's in the series but the final book was so focused on the romance spectrum that it forgot to settle the series whole spectrum. Who was the lost soul? Admittedly, I was not happy with the choice that she chose as far as her romantic end and that was one of the reasons that I felt it dragged on too long. There were plenty of opportunities to end it and it just got a little old, the back and forth, the hope to just be taken away again.
While the story line was really good with the ideas of the advesaries. In this series, Ava is extremely self centered and unforgiving. It was a her way or no way mentality. She seems to hold humans to higher standards and because of that she doesn't accept their flaws as much as others. This mindset of hers almost cost her her best friend Carl. She never really gave the "new" Peter a chance but judges him to be different than Phoenix who grew up used to the different types of supernaturals. Where Peter's introduction was from the brutal death of his wife and the kidnapping of his son, and Ava judges that he isn't open with his feelings, it's only been a year since he has been able to try and put some of those horrors to rest. He still sits with the memory of how his wife and family were murdered.
Phoenix grew up with the brutalness of the world that Ava only recently discovered. Yet, somehow, she seems to think that Phoenix is the better match for her because he is more open. That doesn't mean that he is the better one for her. Both of them have done the same things to her. Her problem with Peter is that he hold back his feelings, but she ignores his feelings about them, and he left her to go to Spain and she felt betrayed. He isn't going to change so quick in less than a year. What he has done for her shows how much he cares for her but she conveniently is blind about it. Phoenix has done the same thing. Blamed her for the dangers of his children and left with them. She was never really mad at him like she was with Peter. She loved him and she holds him to a higher standard but that should not be the case. She hasn't given him the time of day to even repair what had been done. She wants Peter to be accepting of Phoenix but why would he? She keeps giving him passes while blowing Peter off because she is "scared" of going to the past. It wouldn't be the past she had only needed to give him a chance. Granted, Peter could have at any time told her that he loved her but he guards his heart. In which he should, he is still traumatized about losing his wife so horribly and his new "love" has a knack for getting herself into trouble and has almost died several times. With all the back and forth, I just waited for when Peter would corner her and tell her how he really felt. Phoenix keeps telling her from the beginning, just like Peter did, I don't have anything to offer you that will last.
I feel like Phoenix's story would be a good story to read. Two series that speak of it over and over but I feel like we never really got to know it all. And, why did Lorcan and Lucia not come back? What happened that caused that? What was Ari's problem with Ava? Where did Melody Love go? Why was Peter spared his life when his families lives we taken from him? We never really did get an answer to that question. Was there more to why he was spared? And, who was the other tainted that Baba Yaga talked to and what "will work"? So many questions.
This story, outside of the love triangle was three different stories. THe first was my favorite. Seth came to town causing havoc like always and Ava tried everything in her power to stay neutral. She was close to losing her Matriarch role, and almost caused her protection to cease in the cul-de-sac. However, her "Sister" needed her help and Ava needed to help her. The second one was about helping a friend. Ava true to her word has helped her friend in a time of need but this causes a senate member to target her. In the meantime, a new threat comes about and starts making everyone that she cares about as a threat. While trying to figure out where the new threat is coming from, the senate are hiding secrets again and working against her. When they find a bunch of pregnant shifters along with a dead body, Ava finds herself an enemy of the pack. She finds herself a new threat as she races to save her loved ones. The third one seemed a bit rushed. It really focused on her love life than it did the series. It left me wondering who was the lost soul that she was supposed to protect. Ava finds a new slave and it is supposed to lead her to her lost soul. Phoenix and the witches think that the slave would be better with them but the answers Ava kept looking for only raised more questions. The senate had a new traitor in the midst but, with out the evidence, they did not want to believe it. I feel like this story could have continued a little more.
I checked online to see if there would be any more stories because this one opened up other possibilities but this seems to be the last of the Ava series. I am now going to be reading some of the stand alone novels to see if some of my questions are answered. However, since I did get wrapped up in the romance part of it, I just want to say that I route for Peter 100%. Now if it was Gabe vs Peter, I don't know who I would have wanted her with. For one, I really don't think that Phoenix had to take such a drastic measure as to use that whip on her. That's one thing that I won't be able to forgive him for as a reader. Despite my sadness of the romance, and the fact that I still have questions, this series was a great read. I highly recommend this book.
So Ava's first Lost Soul has come and gone, she was kind of a pain in the ass but then again she was just a teenager so her attitude was understandable. I thought with Seth being the first vampire that he would be scarier, even deadiler but he was basically a regular ole vampire. Nothing scary nor deadly about him.
I felt bad for Ava, it seems like she lost all her favorite kids in one shot, no thanks to Phoenix and while I understand he wants to get to know his children, I hate that men like him and Peter treat Ava like a queen when they need her but then like a bad rash when they get what they want and all of a sudden she's to dangerous to be around their children..that sucks because she's a good person who genuinely cares about her friends. At least Peter is trying to change, its super funny watching him get shot down by Ava over and over again...dork.
2) Tethers 4 Stars
Another awesome addition to this already engaging series! Truly page turning this one was! That fucking paragon was a pain the ass! Why can't everyone just get along? Why must people have secret agendas and just want to hate on others? The world is crazy enough without adding more shit into that pot!
As much as I love Ava's character, quite frankly I'm tired of her floundering in her personal life. Pick a fucking man already, you either want Peter or Phoenix but you can't have both of them and I feel like she's playing both men. She says she can't be with Peter because of his violent ways, but he's trying so hard to change not only for his son but for her. Her reasons for not being with him are fucking ridiculous. If she knows she doesn't want a relationship then let him move on and find someone else, let him be happy. Stop giving him hope by kissing him and telling him you need more time just because you're jealous of Melody and subconsciously are trying to sabotage his potential relationship. That's wrong and selfish.
Then there's Phoenix, obviously the man has feelings for Ava and she's crushing on him but can he give her what she wants? At this point I don't think so, I think he's experimenting with Ava. Due to his missing memories he really has no idea what it is to love and form a relationship and Ava is just ripe for him to test himself and his feelings....but can something serious come out of that? Oh and let's not forget that Phoenix is just as violent as Peter if not more...so again her reasons are just fucking stupid!
Aside from Ava's ridiculous love life, this was an amazing read with plenty of action and mystery to keep any reader turning the page!
3) Tithes 4 Stars
Sighs.....so much hate and violence, I just don't understand people, human or otherwise you should never hate so much that you would hurt children! Its not their fault they were born different or special, that's life...move the fuck on!
Ava has been especially frustrating since she became the Matriarch. I understand she wants peace, her view of the world went from being cynical to wearing rose colored glasses, its just not reality. As much as I like her character I can't help but feel she's a bit of a hypocrite. She preaches about equality and how every species should respect one another without judgment but she's does the complete opposite of that when she meets people she initially doesn't like. Makes for a weak and unlikable heroine because I went from loving her to just barely liking her...sucks because she really does care but only about her people, makes her seem a bit selfish at times.
I can't even get into the games she playing with Peter and Phoenix, again hypocrisy at its finest, because the reasons she gives for not being with Peter are the same reasons she's chasing after Phoenix. I feel like she should just focus on herself and her unattainable goals of saving the world. Pitting these two men against each other is just spiteful and she knows exactly what she's doing and that its wrong, because if she didn't feel like she was playing with their emotions she wouldn't feel guilty around both men. She's old enough to know better..
Overall this was yet another engaging and page turning read but there were many things left up in the air so I had to reduce my rating...to many unanswered questions, to many missing people...WTF!
Always a good read when it comes to this author. The character is a strong, independent woman with a caretaker mentality. Farrell perfectly nails the personality and maintains uniformity throughout the books.
I loved, loved, loved this series so much! I can't wait until more books in this series come out, I never get tired of this world and I doubt I ever will!
Tainted: I really enjoyed this book. The plot and characters were amazing. Great action scenes as well as intense emotions and of course the bits of humor. I definitely recommend this book. Tethers: Another very interesting story. Enjoyable characters. I recommend this book. Tithes: I enjoyed this book and although I know there are other books connected to the Ava Delaney Series I was really hoping the Lost Souls Series would continue. I recommend this book.
