It's a nice little story. There's a compelling protagonist with an obstacle to overcome. A nice little narrative with a beginning, middle and end. Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends and at the end the main character is richer for the experience. The main character gets into a relationship and suffers a little heartbreak. This makes the characters a little more three-dimensional and it's a little richer experience for the reader. It makes those second hundred pages really keep the reader guessing what's going to happen. There's some twists and turns, then there's an epilogue. Everyone learns the hero's journey isn't always a happy one. You should really look forward to reading it.
Wendell Odom is an excellent teacher and I firmly believe this book will be the reason I pass the exam.
Since as of today, I am ICND1-certified, I can close this book for now. ;)
I can't honestly tell how it'll fare for 100-105 (I took the 100-101 exam, mostly I read the new book just in case). But a lot of the material is very similar to the previous edition's, which was pretty useful to me, so I'd consider this good reading, especially if it comes after something even more geared towards the exam itself, like Lammle's book.
This book is amazing. This book is a crucial first step in reading when trying to go for your CCNA. This book is specific to the ICND1 portion of the CCNA but it is great for the fundamentals of Networking. This book is a beast and will take time to read as most of the material is dry and technical but if you are passionate about Networking this wouldn't be a problem!
Back in 2016, I read the 100-101 study guide (by the same author), and passed the 2013 version of ICND1. In 2019, I took ICND2 (200-105), but I read the 100-105 book as a recap. This is a long book (over 900 pages), and honestly I found it a slog to get through: it took me several months. However, it contains all the information that you need to pass the exam, and I don't think there's any way to make that interesting.
Some of the content was more relevant to me than other parts, but that's due to the exam syllabus, and the author's hands are tied. For instance, the 100-101 and 100-105 books both cover "legacy NAT" rather than NVI (NAT Virtual Interface). Similarly, both books refer to classes of IP addresses (class A, class B, class C), and these were superseded by CIDR many years ago. You need to understand classful addresses for RIP, but I'd like to see it presented in a different sequence.
The original CCNA exam went live in 1998. This book covers the 2016 syllabus, which is the 7th incarnation. In practical terms, that means that this book has been revised from previous editions rather than written from scratch. That's not a criticism: it means that the content is pretty solid, because most of the mistakes have been dealt with. I submitted some errata in Feb 2020, but the list on the Cisco Press website hasn't been updated since Apr 2018, which is disappointing. However, none of them were too bad. It was mostly errors with cross-references (e.g. p457 refers to figure 19-11 rather than figure 19-9) and typos (e.g. "you" instead of "your").
Each chapter starts with a DIKTA quiz. ("Do I Know This Already?") In previous versions of the book, the answers were in an appendix, so I'd keep 2 (physical) bookmarks to flip back and forth between the pages, but that's awkward for an ebook. In this version, the answers are in a footnote on the following page; that works a lot better.
Bottom line, if I decide to take the new CCNA exam (200-301) then I'll get Wendell Odom's new books for that. Despite my criticisms, I think his books are the best way to learn the syllabus.
A textbook that was very easy to read and understand. Everything in it is broken down well to explain it for a laymen's understanding. Good to use for studying for the CCNA ICND1 exam.
Excellent prep book. Passed the ICND1 first try, ICND2 took two attempts but I felt confident both times. Made a few too many dumb mistakes the first attemp
