Topics covered dealing with the early weeks, including responding mindfully to your baby's cries, joining your child in play and preventing mealtime and bedtime stress, screentime, encouraging outdoor play and saying no, developing positive qualities and managing difficult behaviour and introducing mindfulness to children.
Life with a baby - or more - is challenging, unexpected and, at the end of every day, exhausting. How to find then place in your hectic schedule for the luxury of mindfulness ? This book by Amber Hatch offers no only theoretical support but also many useful practical examples shared by the author, a parent too, and other parents, is explaining why actually parents should focus more on mindfulness, which will help the mental wellbeing of their children too. Through it, better relationships can be built, and 'a little bit of distance' as well as a 'sense of perspective' are given. With an open mind, we can learn a lot from our little ones too, as 'children can act as our teachers in the sense that they show us how to be present'. Written in an accessible style, Mindfulness for Parents makes you feel more relaxed about juggling jobs between tantrums and food spilled all over the house. The best we can do is to try 'to meet our baby's needs', Hatch taking out of the picture the obsession that we, as parents, we need to keep the babies happy. Even though you are not too much into spiritual retreats and meditation, you may find a couple of useful and comforting tips to better deal with the everyday parenting chaos. On the other hand, it encourages to cultivate a peaceful and beautiful house, avoid the consummerism temptation by avoiding to carry on the kids into the shop all round the day, spending more time in the middle of the nature and developing positive qualities such as loving-kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. A book strongy recommended to both new and experienced parents, in the middle of a devastating tantrum or just trying to find the right spiritual routines for their children. With such books, parenting life is much easier. Disclaimer: Book offered by the publisher in exchange for an honest review
This is a useful introduction to mindful parenting, suitable for a newcomer to mindfulness or someone whose practice has fallen by the wayside due to parenthood.
Having previously completed an MBSR course I was familiar with the concepts covered in the first few chapters. For me it was great to have a timely reminder of the how and why of mindfulness and meditation. I can also imagine it would be an inspiring starting point for someone with no experience of mindfulness. My course was completely secular so it was interesting to find out more about the Buddhist side of mindfulness without getting too bogged down in religious ideology.
The later chapters gave me some ideas about how to incorporate mindfulness and meditation into family life. They also provided some insight into how mindfulness could help me deal with the challenges ahead. I can see myself returning to these chapters as my child grows.
At times I felt perhaps the author was trying to sell a particular lifestyle so I think it's important to remember that this only one person's take on the subject.
Has some very useful tips in, particularly about fitting in meditation with young children. This book inspired me to make more effort to carve time for myself to meditate and pointed me in the direction of where to go next.
I thought the book was well written with a TON of practical advice. I especially liked the gray tip boxes through out the chapters and the review at the end. The author shared personal stories and stories from others which was quite helpful in trying to relate the advice to certain situations.
I would have enjoyed a resource guide, possibly at the end of the book which provided resources to help parents and teachers in regards to the topics in each chapter.
I finally finished my first parenting book in my parenting TBR stack and it was pretty good! Definitely had a ton of tips for dealing with difficulties, patience, and raising mindful children. • Reasons for it not being 5 stars are: 1) half of it is discussing implementing mindfulness for individuals with minimal parenting related content 2) she expresses the importance of in-person meditation classes and diminishes using apps which I feel have helped in my own practice 🤷🏻♀️ • All in all, I feel like I gained understanding and perspective and hope to increase my mindfulness as a wife and mother. If I’m more mindful of why I’m feeling a certain way I can convey it in a healthier and more understanding way to others.
I struggle with depression and anxiety, and am very familiar with mindfulness techniques. However, I struggle with incorporating those into my parenting life. I have been looking for a book like this for years! This book was a great way to bridge the gap between the two worlds that make up my life. Obviously it's going to take a lot of work before I am a master, but this book really had great new ways to look at parenting. I borrowed this book from the library and read the parts that applied the most. I need to buy a copy of the book though, so I can have it on hand. I have already recommended this book to a few friends!
