In this powerful, sensual romance from the author of Her Survivor, a broken woman meets a shattered warrior—and discovers a passion strong enough to heal each other’s deepest wounds.
Navy SEAL Reece Browning sacrificed body and soul in the line of duty. He survived torture at the hands of America’s enemies, but lost his career and his voice in the process. Traumatized and desperate to get his PTSD under control, Reece escapes to Eagle Ridge Ranch. Under the big Texas sky, he finds peace, a renewed sense of purpose—and a woman who makes him feel like a man again. Her smile lights up his dark days, and her caress helps him forget the night terrors.
Ex-Marine Gina Wilson also bears painful scars: emotional wounds inflicted by men she once trusted with her life. She has fought hard to overcome her demons and build a good life for her daughter, and Reece is too intense, too damaged, too raw to let into her heart. Yet she’s drawn irresistibly to his steely gaze and heated embrace. No one else understands what it’s like to suffer in silence. And when Gina’s daughter is threatened, it’s Reece who risks everything to save the day.
Hers to Heal the 2nd book in the Black Eagle Ops series was hard for me to rate. I had mixed feelings about this book. There were things I really liked about this book. I liked Reece and Piper, and the dog Nance. I thought Gina was okay but at times she really got on my nerves. I liked the wounded warrior PTSD theme of the book. But there were things that just didn't work for me. One thing that really didn't work for me was Reece and Gina's relationship. It was insta-love which I'm normally good with but this didn't feel real. I didn't feel a connection to them as a couple and I didn't feel chemistry between them. Another thing that didn't really work for me was there was some really over the top cheesiness going on in this book. I am all for cheese. I love super sweet romance but there was a few things in here that I felt just was too cheesy. The last thing that didn't work for me was the whole book felt rushed. Everything was rushed, insta-love, insta-family, insta-healing, Insta-bad guy, insta-rescue, and insta-hea. That rush kept me from getting too invested. I will say that the book had some really fun parts, and some super cute parts with Piper. Piper was my favorite part of the book. Who doesn't love a sassy 6 year old. Overall not a bad read. I feel if this book had a little more meat it would have been a real hit. If the book would have slowed down a bit, added some more pages, more relationship, and personality development it could have been a 5 star for me. I would read this author again!
This book was a sweet combination of many things. There were military men and women, PTSD, a precocious almost-genius 6 year old girl, a wise and well-meaning mama, comraderie, a lot of laughs, and there was so much love among all of the characters.
Despite touching on heavy topics such as PTSD, torture and rape, overall the story was surprisingly heartwarming. All of the issues were handled delicately and sensibly. The author gave plenty of details without being too graphic or dwelling. It was more about accepting one's past, asking and getting help when needed, and being able to move forward.
I enjoyed this story immensely. I respect and admire anyone who serves in the military and this book shed light on what many of them have endured or are still trying to deal with. My only disappointment was towards the end. Without giving a spoiler, a situation occurs and the heroine, Gina, went off her rocker and completely disrespected the hero, Reese. It was uncalled for, unjustified, and unnecessary to the plot IMO. I really wish I could remove that part. And I don't think she atoned well enough for her behaviour.
My favourite characters: Piper (so effin cute), Junebug (she was a riot), and of course, Mr. Alpha himself, Reece.
This was a very emotional read for me. I enjoyed it very much. It was like watching a movie while reading a book.
Reece suffers from PTSD, which was hard on him and his family. You often find people who suffer from PTSD rarely admit it because they are ashamed and Reece was the same. I admire Vonnie Davis bravery for writing about the topic as many authors steer clear of such a difficult subject.
Gina and Reece had amazing chemistry, the kind many people live their entires lives trying to find but never do.
This is a story of loss and finding your path again. A story that shows how to love someone no matter what. Gina was such a strong woman and stood by her man throughout his trials.
Gina has the sweetest little girl, Piper, who develops the most adorable relationship with Reece. Piper aided Reece on the past to living out a normal day to day life with PTSD. It was seriously one of the cutest things EVER!!! The progression of their relationship was beautifully written.
The suspense keep me on the edge of my seat, I couldn't but it down. LOVED IT!!!! YASSSSSSS!!!!
I definitely have mixed feelings about this book. I read the first book of the series Her Survivor and I was definitely looking forward to more in this series. I love the theme of the military heroes with the romantic suspense aspect of the series. This book has a lot of pluses and some of minuses for me.
I can totally relate to the PTSD aspects of the story and the whole series focus as I live with someone who has many of these issues depicted. I can also grasp the Insta love aspect of the story because I have lived it many ways. Those suffering with the effects of tramatic injury want so desperately to fit in and feel love and be loved. So I get it.
I really love the character of Reese. He is so super sweet. And Piper is a great addition to the story. Gina, on the other hand, I didn't care for her sometimes, especially in time of stress. Plus I think her injuries were not depicted with the depth that is probably evident in survivors like her.
Some of my issues with this stem from how fast the book progressed. I think that in many ways the author was in too much of a hurry to tell the story and there were parts that could've been developed to make it more believable.
I really hated how obvious the foreshadowing was. As soon as the "issues" that the team was going to be dealing with, I knew exactly what was going to happen. That to me is kind of a bummer.
Overall, I love the story and the series. The guys on the team and their surrounding support characters are lovely people. So in that aspect the book is a pleasure to read, which is where the 4 star bump comes from.
I do look forward to more in the series because the author has tapped into a great plot and storyline. I just hope she gets better at a little bit more development in critical areas that can make or break a reading experience for someone.
I really enjoyed "Her Survivor", so this book was a little hard for me. The book started off strong! Reece was extremely traumatized by his experiences in the military and he is battling severe PTSD, the loss of an arm, and his demons. Reece doesn't speak either (and after reading about his experience I totally got it). For a month, Gina has been providing physical therapy to Reece. She talks incessantly and he just listen's. There is chemistry between the two but since both the hero/heroine are broken they don't act on it. My emotions were amped up and I was prepared for a tough journey for our H/h. But that journey didn't happen.
The beginning of the book started strong and I was totally invested in the characters....and then Piper (heroine's daughter) came into the story and everything changed, the characters changed, the emotions changed, and that's when the book just sort of lost me.
Let me start by saying, I giggled during this book, I shook my head, I got angry at Gina, and I did keep reading. But there were a few things that happened that caused me lose that "this is a great book" feeling. It happened right around the time Piper came into the picture, the entire dynamics of the H/h changed. It seemed like Reece just came out of shell WAY to easily, I felt Gina was far to open with her past so soon in the relationship, and it thought the Piper/Reece relationship was just a little off for me. It was the believability factor that caused me to feel like the book went from Great to okay.
I giggled at Junebug, and there are some funny interactions in the book, I like the secondary characters (can't wait to read JJ and Ashley's book), I liked the storyline...I just didn't appreciate how it was executed if that makes sense. Reece was a totally awesome/broken hero, in the beginning...and then his character changes to a lovesick puppy. And Gina...she really got on my nerves a few times and hit some TSTL moments that I totally lost respect for the character. Reece was also quick to forgive.
Also, this the first time I have ever heard a condom referred to as a "rooster jacket" what is the heck. Even a grandmother wouldn't call it a rooster jacket. There was also some other awkward sexual references that just had me asking myself "what the heck, who talks like that".
This is definitely and insta-love romance, that is a over the top. This book just had some elements that didn't sit well with me but I still like this series, and I don't want to ruin this for anyone else, but if you read it, I am sure you will understand what I am talking about.
I will still read this series and I really can't wait for JJ and Ashley's story.
I didn't like the H for the way he gave his h an ultimatum when she expressed her reservations about being with a serving military man. He didn't talk to her about her reasons for her fears (which were legit), he basically told her it was his way or no way. Where was his understanding? Where was the communication?
Let's be honest, that life isn't for everyone and if you really love someone, don't you want to reassure them of your intentions and feelings? The fact that his friend and boss tells him he needs to man up and not let her lead him on by the balls (just because she fears for him and his dangerous line of work!) made me really dislike both of them.
The h wasn't much better. She came off as a shrew and an OTT dramatic one at that. Even her "almost" genius little girl was OTT.
The romance was cheesy and the dialogue was jarring. The magic healing waterfall also seemed like an easy fix to the serious problems of PTSD and war trauma.
This is one I honestly would not recommend. It was not for me.
It was a good book to read during Veterans Day. I really loved Reece. He went through hell and came out on the other end. His relationships with his brothers at arms was touching. His heart was made of gold. He was very sext too.
Gina at times was very infuriating and so unfair to Reece. I know she had issues too, but she just rained them down on Reece without any forethought. I am glad the members of Reece's family put her in her place. Now I know she is a mom and your child comes first, but you don't have to be so cruel. Piper at times was WAY over the top. I know the author wanted her at the front of the story, but she got very annoying quick.
Now the recovery of Reece seemed to go at light speed. It did state he had been seeing Gina for therapy for awhile so he did interact with her longer then it seemed. But it did seem he came out of his not talking fast.
Emotional read. I would like to read the next on.

Let me start by saying there is something for everyone. Generally I am a huge fan of tortured heroes, wounded warriors, and the like. That’s the reason that I gave this book I try. And at first, while it could be a little corny at times, I thought it would be OK. Unfortunately the longer I read, the worse it got. So much so that I had to struggle to make it to the last page.
Basically this series centers around a group of Navy SEALs who were injured in service and are now healing at a place called Eagle Ridge Ranch in Texas. They are there to support each other. There are also great therapists available for them, to help heal body and mind. And at least one of the men has his mama there to help make it feel even more like family. The hero of this story, Reese Browning, lost his arm in service. His physical therapist, Gina, is an ex marine.
Reese’s injuries extend beyond his arm. He is also suffering from major PTSD. He barely speaks. Gina is fighting her own demons, which I won’t spoil, but you will figure out what they are pretty quickly if you read the book. As the story begins, she has been treating him for about a month, and he has barely spoken to her, yet there is a clear attraction there. They go from 0 to 100 in about five seconds. This Insta love will give you whiplash it happens so quickly. And that is where the problems begin.
It’s one thing for two people to fall in love and into bed really fast; it’s another thing when a child is involved. Gina is the single mother of a six-year-old girl who decides Reese is her daddy the first time she meets him. She calls him ‘Daddy’ the entire book. It really bothered me. It also really bothered me the fine point put on Reese and his buddies being manly men. It is true that there are times that Gina has reactions which are not well thought out. But he cuts her very little slack. The book treats her like an hysterical woman for having reactions which are really pretty normal. Like when he wants to join the CIA or when her child is put at risk.
On top of this, the storyline is predictable. From the moment we learned of a threat Reese’s team was investigating, it was blatantly obvious how the story would play out. And it wasn’t even believable. What are the chances? Forgive me for dropping into spoiler land for a moment, but you knew the kid was going to be kidnapped from the beginning. So why let her go into the situation where you know she’s going to be kidnapped? And then why does everyone hate on Gina for being understandably upset that her daughter was put in danger when she didn’t have to be? It was beyond eye rolling.
And then there is the language. For instant in one case, Gina leaves Reese a thong, which we find out has been worn because he can smell her “feminine essence” on it. Ew.
Or this one? “She snatched his Stetson and rode him hard to the magic land of shared a erotic spirits, his thumb pressing on her clit to open the gate to her climax.”
Or my personal favorite, when the hero said, “Promise me when I die, you’ll have the coroner cut off my cock and you’ll tuck it inside that sweet vagina of yours.”
Do I really need to continue? I’ll spare you, except to say that even old people don’t say things like “fudge and buttermilk” when they’re upset, much less say it a dozen times.
Reese was a good enough guy, but he got over his trauma pretty easily.
I guess Gina’s vagina is not only sweet but it is also magical. It may be the only thing magical about this book.

dnf at 13% and don't get me wrong... what I read, wasn't horrible, it wasn't like I suffered reading those chapters... it's just... the book was *meh* for me, and that was a disappointment, because based on the synopsis, I was hoping to really love it... unfortunately, I couldn't really connect to the characters... the writing style wasn't bad, but it also wasn't as great as to want me to keep going... and I have way too big of tbr #BookMountain to get through, for me to feel like I'm wasting my time on a book that I don't really enjoy #SorryNotSorry ;) definitely don't let me discourage you from trying it out though, because I'm sure there's going to be quite a few of you who will actually like it a lot :) again, for me there wasn't anything really bad that I can point my finger at and say *that's why I stopped reading* but rather an overall vibe that I couldn't get rid off, of me just going through the book without really enjoying it... maybe I'll give this author another shot in the future to see if it was the case of the book or her writing style in general :)
Im fairly certain I have had my fill of bad dialog and will prob be putting this one down. It had so much potential in the beginning. I really thought the author was going to rake us thru the coals with Reece's arm and subsequent torture and also Gina's issues.. But for the most put all just kind of cleared up. What could have been a deeply emotional book just kind of turned into insta-love, miraculous healing and a man that talks more like a woman.
And please I dont think I ever want to see a woman's vag referred to as "love folds" ever again unless its a joke. Or a man's penis referred to as a pecker unless its also a joke or 11 yrs referring to a pecker. It made for a very unsexy and awkward sex scene.
If you haven't yet read a book by Vonnie Davis you don't know what you are missing. I really love her writing. She has a way of making her characters pop right off the page and in the room with you.
For the most part I really enjoyed Hers to Heal, I did have a few issues with the story and I will talk about them at the end of this review after the spoiler note. Hers to Heal is book two of Davis' Black Eagle Ops. You met Reece in the prior book and knew his story was coming soon. I really loved him and felt so bad for what he was going through. My heart just broke for this strong, loving man.
I'm so glad that he found someone like Gina and her daughter piper. I love piper she's so cute and funny and really gave Reece something to live for. Gina at times....she's more in the spoiler note.
You'll really enjoy all the characters in this series and want to know more about them. I love the way they all interact with each other and are there for them. You'll find yourself laughing more then once in this book. Most of the time it has to do with the words and actions of piper.
I really love her!!!
Spoiler Note.... ↓ ↓
↓ ↓
For the most part I enjoyed all the characters but at times Gina pissed me off. I understand that she has a few issues due to what she had to go through.(I'm doing only the spoilers I want to give away, for the rest read the story) but at times it was just to much.
On the other hand what happens at the end of the book I'm totally with her, if the man I loved but my child in danger without telling me I'm KILL HIM! there would be no feeling bad for how I reacted. I also didn't get how everyone, mostly Clint thought that it was okay to belittle her feelings. I really liked him till that moment. I will admit that for me if I was living this there would be no happy ending. I would have walked away from people who thought that endangering my daughter was okay.
I do realize that in a novel people need to heal fairly quickly so that the story can go forward. However, it is so misleading to portray PTSD as being "cured" or even eased in just one or two sessions with a counselor. PTSD is something that effects soldiers for years, for a lifetime, unto death. While counseling can help those suffering with PTSD, often the first major hurdle is to get the patient to agree that he/she needs treatment, that they have anything that needs treating. Those with PTSD will often tell you that they are fine, there is nothing wrong with them, they are coping just fine and readapting to civilian life just fine.
To see PTSD handled as it was in this book is grossly misleading and belittles what those who suffer with it must go through to return to some sort of regular life following combat with or without imprisonment or military sexual trauma. When you take on such a subject, you should be ready to deal with it properly or leave it alone. The tone of this book was in no way dark enough to portray the subject properly and so came off as being a lightweight overall.

“Hers to Heal” is the second book in the “Black Eagle Ops” series by Vonnie Davis.
I loved the first book in this series but am having a really difficult time with my feelings towards this one and how to rate it. How do you rate a book where you loved 90% of it but hated 10%?? Really, really, hated it.
Let me start with what I enjoyed. The books in this series so far are not your dark and gritty types of read regardless of some of the more serious topics. I’m all for dark and gritty but sometimes I just want a really sweet read and it doesn’t hurt if there is some action, danger, and suspense involved. That’s what you are going to get here. The PTSD and some of the issues the characters are going through are often more easily resolved than they would be in real life. I didn’t have a problem with this as it was the read I was looking for at the time.
I loved Reece and Gina for the majority of the book. She had known Reece for about a month but once things started happening they happened FAST. I can roll with that though. They were just both so sweet, yet so troubled and I wanted to see good things happening between them. Reece was so considerate of Gina’s past and Gina truly wanted to help Reece. I loved their interactions. I loved the steamy scenes. I enjoyed the addition of Gina’s daughter Piper, I thought she was cute and added some laughs to the book. I loved seeing the eclectic characters from the previous book. Basically I just really enjoyed this fast moving sweet read.
But then came that 10%. The two things I hated to the point that I think it pretty much ruined the entire book for me. I even waited over a week to write the review to let some of my anger subside so I could see if I viewed it differently. Nope. Still angry.
Nope. A week apparently isn’t enough to assuage my anger. I’m pissed off all over again. SO, how do I rate this? I think if it hadn’t been for all the misogynistic BS I would’ve said 4 or 5 stars. But it was so bad, made me so angry, all I can think is 1 star. I’m going with 2. It sadly destroyed a wonderfully sweet book for me. And made me really dislike ZQ and Clint for the way they treated Gina. I will probably try the next book. The first one didn’t have any of this nonsense in there so I can only hope the next one doesn’t either. Otherwise that’s probably it with this author for me. I don’t need, nor want, this authors version of a “man’s man”.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
I have to start off by saying that I did enjoy the chemistry between the two main characters, Reece and Gina) but I loved Piper...what a little spitfire that kid was. Piper had no filter when it came to what she said, in true kid fashion, and there were times that I just couldn't help but shake my head while saying "kids" out loud. Now back to Gina and Reece, Reece is suffering from sever PTSD now that he has been rescued from the terrorists that held him captive, he also lost an arm and that is how he met Gina, she is his physical therapist determined to get him to use his prosthetic as if it was still his original arm.
Reece was so far into his own head that he never spoke to anyone, actually when I read the books blurb I thought he might be mute but that wasn't the case at all, he just needed a reason to start speaking again and Piper he found that reason. I absolutely loved the bond that Reece and Piper had and when a series of events unfold I understand why he did what he did. I am not going to let on about what happened but I will say that if I was in his shoes towards the end of the book I would have done the same thing.
I CANNOT WAIT to read JJ and Ashley's story!!!

This book had me riding on a rollercoaster of emotions. It is another incredible story in the series. Part of The Black Eagle Ops Series this book takes a deeper look at PTSD, and the physical struggles encountered and how they are dealt with. We meet Reece and Gina in this book. Reece is a SEAL part of ZQ's unit and comes to Eagle Ridge to cover from his injuries and PTSD. He lost an arm but worse was captured and endured unspeakable torture at the hands of ISIS. He has day visions as well as nightmares. Reece's way of dealing with things in his silence. He mainly grunts or speaks one or two words and only when necessary. He isolates and is obstinate about wearing his prosthetic arm, much to the ire of Gina his physical therapist. To say Reece is uncooperative is an understatement. At a point Gina asks Reece if he'd like a replacement therapist because he's so noncompliant and unresponsive with her. She has worked with the SEALS before and so she understands things, but clearly Reece just doesn't seem to like her. Reece's response is "No" he doesn't want her replaced. He wants her. He comes around, wearing his arm, getting used to it. Talking more, and it's ZQ's mother Junebug who helps pull him out also as well as Piper, Gina's precocious and absolutely charming 6 year old daughter who spends some time at the ranch during her school break. Reece and Piper become bound at the hip. She wants a Daddy very badly. Gina is also military, serving time in the Marines. She suffered a horrific trauma during a training exercise which she keeps to herself, until one day she opens up to Reece. These two develop feelings, deep feelings for each other and Reece takes Piper as if she were his own child. Meanwhile the side story is Ashley, who ZQ has been trying to get to come to the ranch finally calls and is ready. The ranch is a place where they come to heal and re-collect themselves. ZQ also heads a Special Ops team. JJ who we met in the previous stories has past history with Ashley, their initial encounter was anything but pleasant and causes tension for everyone until ZQ takes them for one of his "lessons" I love him. Tucked into this story is also their mission that has been unfolding, a group of Russian mafia who are now abducting little blonde haired girls from Florida and Texas to export them in the slave market. Little girls. We get to see Fed Marshall Clint again and his wife, and the cast of characters from previous books in the little town of Warrior Falls. This book is another winner by Vonnie Davis. Each book successively builds on the last but can still be read as a stand alone. I love this series. She does the characters justice and has a keen insight into the struggles these men and women face when they return home and try to adjust to life that has no sense of normalcy. Amazing read!
**arc from NetGalley and Publisher** in exchange for an honest review.
For those who have read some of my reviews, you know that I'm a sucker for anything Military. But I'm an even bigger sucker when it also involves Wounded Warriors. I have to admit that I was completely hooked on this series from the very beginning and was looking forward to reading about all of those on the Black Eagle Ops team. I'm not gonna lie, I was secretly hoping for someone elses story, but it looks like I got a little taste in this one anyway.
Gina is the physical therapist that's been working with some of the boys and townsfolk for some time. She's been assigned to the newest addition to the ranch, Reece, and has been having a hard time. Take away the fact that he's totally hot and all alpha male, she's been talking to him for weeks and he's refused to speak to her. Desperate times, desperate measures. In fact, she over steps her professional boundaries a little bit, but it works. Reece is finally saying more than "no", "hell no" and "mmm". And now that he's talking, her body is SOOOOO on board. It's her mind that needs a little adjusting.
Reece has been through hell. No really. HELL. He's been captured and tortured and created a little bubble that he's been perfectly fine in...until Gina starts hitting all of his buttons. Now that he's finally talking about able to speak his mind, he's very well aware of Gina's body and what it does to him. But it's not just Gina that he's noticed. He's completely smitten with her daughter, Piper, as well. Must be the fact that Piper starts calling him "Daddy" from the get-to. And here's where I start to lose a little of my interest, to the point that I keep talking myself in to continuing the story.
The instant chemistry between Reece and Gina is completely understandable. I mean, she rubs her hands all over him everyday for crying out loud. But she has a young girl who, yes, is totally cute and adorable. But who apparently has been "searching" for a "daddy" for some time now. And she's dug her claws in to Reece. Now, don't get me wrong. The interactions between them are precious and super cute, but it was really hard for me to accept some of it considering how fast everything happens. Ok, I've gotten that off my chest. I feel better now...let's continue.
Despite my feelings about Reece and Piper's relationship moving too quickly, the story is pretty cute. Once we learn about Gina's past and who Piper's dad is, not to mention how Reece was tortured, it's no wonder why and/or how these three end up together. Because this IS a package deal. The drama with the Mafia isn't over, but it sure did add some suspense. And of course now I'm chomping at the bit to get my hands on the next one.
*I received this from the Jeep Diva in exchange for my honest opinion.
Another winner in the Eagle Ops series. This time it's Reece Browning who is fighting PTSD and the use of an artificial limb. His physical therapist and ex-Marine Gina Wilson, is part of the equation along with her daughter Piper. Piper is a gem. Tricky and loveable. Reece and Gina's story is tender, confrontative and fiery. Along the way a couple of others from ZQ's team come to Warrior Falls. Davis seems to combine a touch of Zane Grey with the raunchy reality that surrounds the men in this series. I like the human face of these characters, their interplay and support for each other. Gina has her own particular set of 'demons' to exorcise. I really appreciated Davis' support and understanding for women in service and the particular issues they face. This story only touches on what I am sure are deep emotional scars for some of these women. The dedication at the back of the book makes clear how personal the challenges facing returned personnel are to Davis. Sure, this is a HEA type novel that includes deep and heartfelt issues. I love that a character like 'Silver' is included in the group--a Vietnam Vet who has had to face similar issues to those of the Eagle ops group. This gives a wry sense of continuity as the past bleeds into the today.
I had a few issues with this book, mostly around the characters themselves and the pacing of the book.
I didn't like Gina, at all. I thought she was very quick to judge and jump to conclusions. The way she treated Reece was downright disrespectful. I'll not put any spoilers in here, but I am so glad that the other characters called her out/reprimanded her for her treatment of him. He could have done way better.
With Reece, when we meet him, he is a sullen man suffering from PTSD. Doesn't talk much and is surly. Totally understandable after all he went though. But then, miraculously, after a day or 2 he is this charismatic, loquacious, man who sings and dances. huh?! I would have liked to know a bit more backstory on him or get perspective from other characters who knew him before. Was he always that outgoing? Did his experience change his personality completely? Did the love a woman or time on the ranch bring him back to what he once was?
And speaking of time....This was so not even plausible in my mind. I get love at first sight but this was just too far fetched for me. It's like all of their issues were solved in 1 week. But in fact, none, of their issues were really solved because in real life this relationship would be totally doomed. But since it's a work of fiction I guess they get their HEA.
This was an awesome read. I loved these characters. Reece and Gina were great but Piper, Gina's young daughter, stole the story. Reece is a former Navy SEAL who's last mission went fubar and he ended up in enemy hands. During his captivity his refusal to speak was heroic, now that he's home his refusal to speak is just another symptom of his PTSD. The only person that seems to be getting past his defenses is physical therapist Gina Wilson. Gina is a former marine and knows full well what it's like to be haunted by demons. The person that really breaks through to Reece's heart though is Piper. She is a ball of energy who isn't afraid to tell anyone exactly what she's thinking. She makes up her mind that Reece is going to be her Daddy and nothing will change her mind. Will her belief in him be enough to make all their dreams come true??
Hers to Heal is the second in Vonnie Davis' Black Eagle Ops series and the second book of hers I've read. I wondered if she could impress me as much in the this one as she did in the first novel in this series, Her Survivor, and yes, she did--another 4.5 star read.
This novel centers around tortured, wounded and PTSD-damaged, Navy SEAL, Reece Browning, whose fellow SEAL Team 5 members rescued him after he was captured, beaten, whipped, waterboarded and hung upside down in ankle manacles for days. As a result, he lost part of one arm above the elbow and is slowly recuperating along with fellow SEAL team members at the 22,000 acre Eagle Ridge ranch, which is owned by his former commanding officer, known as ZQ. He's also receiving physical therapy from Gina Wilson, a single mom and former Marine, who's experienced trauma of her own, and is the mother of adorable, 6-year-old, Piper. She's been trying to get Reece to communicate but so far all she's gotten out of him is the occasional grunt. Part of her job is to train him on the use of his prosthesis, something he's been fighting tooth and nail since her first day spent working with him.
The relationship between Gina and Reece is contentious at best, but there is also a strong attraction between these two characters, and as soon as Piper meets Reece, she decides that he's going to be the Daddy she's always wanted, and she starts calling him Daddy as soon as she she discovers that they share the same middle name, Morgan, believing it to be fate. Although I'm generally not a fan of children in romance novels, Piper is a hoot and a half and some of things that pop out of her mouth had me laughing out loud, the same is true of ZQ's mom, chief cook and adopted mom to all of the recuperating SEAL team members at the ranch.
As the relationship between Gina and Reece intensifies with them both talking about the trauma they've each experienced, so too does the tension, as ZQ asks Reece to join his covert group, Black Eagle Ops group. After proposing marriage to Gina and Piper, Reece is offered a spot in the group and is thrilled to again find purpose in his life. Gina, who's own father always put military duty ahead of his family, is less than thrilled to hear this news. When the team becomes involved in attempting to bring down a Russian mafia-led child sex-trafficking ring, not only does the tension ratchet up, so too do the relationship issues between Gina and Reece.
There's a lot of relationship drama for these two main characters to work through to get to their HEA ending, and there's even more drama and action to follow, not only between the main characters, but between some of the secondary characters at the ranch as well, and I, for one, cannot wait to read their stories.
My only issue with this novel is the speed at which both the relationship between Gina and Reece develops (one month), and how quickly his PTSD starts to respond. Being married to a Vietnam vet with PTSD for 40+ years makes me well aware of how lengthy a fight these emotionally damaged wounded warriors are facing, and the knowledge of that long struggle is the only reason I gave this well-written novel 4.5 rather than 5 stars.
After reading the first book in the Black Eagle Ops series, Her Survivor...and giving it five stars, I expected this second book to provide that same level of a gripping story. This second book was good, but didn't deliver quite at the same level as the first story.
Ms Davis once again created a moving story with characters that reach deep within and touch your heart. Her message of wounded warriors is so much more than a surface topic, she delves deeply into their psyche and physical pain providing the reader with an emotional attachment and investment in the characters. Both primary and secondary characters get equal attention by this author, i.e., Junebug and Piper, who both were scene stealers and delivered some very humorous moments.
Some of the more comical encounters came between Piper and Reece...that little lady certainly had an endearing way about her that simply drew Reece, breaking down some of his tougher barriers. Not only was the banter between the characters entertaining it of itself, but even more entertaining was Reece's inner dialog...it was sharp, very wry and definitely sarcastic to the point of hilarity. Gina did not set to well with me on several occasions...she was too fast to jump down Reece's throat for perceived slights or Piper's safety, which was irritating that someone in a medical profession could be quick to judge and find fault. Though she justified her actions as her "mother mode", it just was used too often and was too much. There were a few other things that were a bit unbelievable in the way of how the real world functions, but not enough to take away from the story as a whole.
The action in the story was gripping and got the heart racing, but I would have liked to have had a bit more of the hunt and capture of the bad guys rather than the general synopsis that was given to neatly tie up that aspect of the story. Not sure if this was because the book was an unedited copy or not, and would be caught and corrected before release, but the author's interchangeable use of filly and colt for the female foal born in the story was glaring to anyone familiar with horses. All in all though, I enjoyed the continuing Black Eagle Ops story and look forward to the next book in the series.

A huge fan of this writer and a huge fan of this series, this book is no different, I am a huge fan of it and the characters as well.
Reece is another of ZQ's former SEALs and one wounded from battle. He's lost part of his arm and is battling PTSD and the hallucinations it brings. He was captured and tortured and his body is paying the heavy price for that. The former easy to laugh SEAL is now angry at the world and pretty much hates everyone.
Gina is the physical therapist who has worked on the others and other Warrior Falls residents and she is currently giving Reece a hell of a time. He is stubborn and only answers with grunts. She is feeling things for Reece that cross the line and it bothers her but this man is something different.
Gina talks a lot and when she asks him if he would rather have another therapist he barely whispers the word no. She informs him then that if she finds him with his prosthesis off again before nine she will shove it up..... After all she is a former Marine herself.
Then Piper, Gina's daughter, shows up one day with her and sets his world on it's side. She talks more than her momma. And she's decided that he's going to be her daddy. Whoa!
ZQ is working secretly to for a clandestine team of the best and that means whether they are wounded or not. His momma, Junebug loves having all her boys there and now Ashley is coming too.
As things progress it seems that the Russian mafia are kidnapping little blonde girls and ZQ and his team have been tagged to stop them.
Gina has had her own trauma and she is really getting put to the test with Reece and Ashley. She is all for helping everyone but this might be too hard for even her.
Reece has to tell her about his PTSD and why he can't stay over. They are getting closer and closer and when he comes clean so does she. It isn't a pretty story, even worse was what her father did in the aftermath.
Will she be able to overcome this? Will she be able to accept Reece's job and will Piper get her daddy? Will the team be able to save all those little blonde girls? You'll have to read to find out.

OK – now it is official Vonnie Davis has me hocked to her “Black Eagle Ops” series – I just finished reading the second book in that series that is called “Hers to Heal”.
And I have to say that the second book held onto everything that the first book in that series promised. When I read “Her Survivor” about half a year ago I found a romance that was just enough “sweet small town romance” to be endearing but not enough to make me run off and believe me I would have because I don’t “do” well with those “sugar coated romances”.
I fell in love with the characters and I could not wait to hear more about them. The intriguing part in this series is that the author uses components of those “small town sugar coated” romances and places some really tough soldiers in that setting. And I can not help myself I love wounded warrior novels.
Also Ms. Davis used a clever spin as spice in this series (which I will not give away because using the words I would have to use to describe it some people might consider this book belonging to another genre and that is not true – it is just a little spice and not really a genre switch)
It seems that each book in the series will focus on a different couple and I have my feelings on what the next book(s) might be about. Also the reader will find a background story that connects all of the books and that is connected to the fact that all of the leading characters are soldiers.
Reece and Gina were a great pairing and their developing relationship was well written. The suspense that was added was just the icing to this cake.
I really like the way this series is developing I hope we will not have to wait to long for the next release.
Most importantly this book needs a trigger warning for a very graphically described flashback to a gang rape scene.
I also don't like that her bad guys are involved in child sex-slave rings. Real life is dark enough - I read books to escape it, not wallow in it.
Why was Gina the one who had to apologize at the end? It's not like the things she said in her voicemails to Reese were wrong. He did knowingly allow Gina's daughter to go into danger without letting Gina know. That whole mess was like the Black Ops team was using all of those children as bait, given that they didn't warn any of the parents or try to stop the field trips when they knew it was very likely the bad guys were going to be there that day. I'm sorry but they all owed Gina and the other parents an apology, not the other way around. Good god, this book made me so angry.
Her heroes seem to say a lot of borderline asshole things to try assert their alpha-ness, and that's supposed to make them attractive? Give it up. And what is her obsession with thongs? ugh. All I can think is how uncomfortable every one of her heroines must be all the time being made to wear butt-floss. It also seems really out of character for some of them to choose those, given their pasts. I could see them doing it for a date, but for everyday work-wear? It seems really unlikely in some of these cases. Inconsistent characterization.
Reece a Navy Seal who was injured in the line of duty has gone to the ranch of his commanding officer ZQ. His hope is to find peace from his PTSD and rehab his missing arm. What he hadn’t planned on was the beautiful physical therapist that would be pushing his buttons and pulling him out of his self-imposed silence.
Gina, who was also military, has been a physical therapist for many men, and many of them military but there’s something about Reece that has her being drawn out of shell. She’s shut out close, personal relationships, especially with men for so long she’s didn’t know that anyone could crack the wall she had put up around her heart.
These two are each other’s healing ointment. Without each other they crash and burn but don’t think it will be easy, they crash and burn together a few times too.
This is the second book of the series and the second book I’ve read of Vonnie Davis. I will say she has quickly become one of my favorite and I look forward to book 3. Although these books are a series, they could definitely stand alone. The storyline and characters are strong enough that you will not be lost if you haven’t read Her Survivor but if it was me, I’d still recommend going back and reading it.
I was provided an ARC copy of this book by Netgalley for an honesty review This book rated 3.5 stars from me. For the most part, I enjoyed the story premise and the characters, but there were some things that didn't sit quite right for me. The hero - he was was damaged and broody, and then suddenly he wasn't. And it was just "too easy" of a fix. I'm all for the love of a good woman fixing a broken man, hell...I live for that in my favoritest books - but this just happened too quickly, and I didn't have 100% buy in. I like more angst, more push/pull, and a hard won "saving of my man". The precocious little girl - and my goodness was she precocious and precious! I absolutely loved her, but it really rankled me that she called him her "daddy" from the beginning. The major plot twist - it was just a little too convenient and unbelievable and put in there to get the story to its conclusion. And while it was needed for the story to finish, it didn't have the "oh sh*t" moment that I like in my stories.

I love a military/ex-military romance and I'm a sucker for a veteran. Unfortunately this story was just too much for me. Given some of the very sensitive topics (rape, torture, PTSD), the writing made me cringe. It was overly sweet and didn't mesh with the topics that both MCs faced. A few things I just did not get:
1. The h called the H "Tool Belt" and it wasn't sexy, at least to me. 2. The H and h's 7 year old daughter fell in love with each other immediately and she started calling him "Daddy" immediately. This is the same H who suffered with PTSD so badly he couldn't speak to anybody until the day before (not literally but almost). 3. Nance, the wounded vet K9, that ate at the dinner table with a bib on. 4. Junebug.
What in small doses may be charming or folksy became very cornbally (is that a word?) and too sweet and saccharine for me.
I didn't enjoy this book as much as I had hoped to. I thought the relationship between Reece and Gina just felt too easy. Come on...her little girl starts calling him Daddy and he doesn't immediately freak out? They had only just met!!!
Plus her ultimatum about the military job was just ridiculous especially considering she herself had served (granted she had a bad experience, but she should understand the duty he felt to his country). I felt she flew off the handle way too often and didn't give him the benefit of the doubt nearly enough.
Now...I loved the parts about Ashley and JJ. I can't wait for Ashley's book...I'm eager to read about how she will overcome the horror she went through and what that could possibly mean for a future with JJ.
Reece is an ex-SEAL and Gina is an ex-Marine. Reece is left with only 1 arm while Gina's wounds from the war are much different. Gina's life now revolves around her 6 year old daughter Piper, while Reece is dealing with a prosthetic arm and PTSD. Gina is a physical therapist and is assigned to help Reece while he is at Warrior Falls on the ranch of his former commander. It doesn't take long for them to develop a deep connection. Although the premise of the book is really good and the beginning kept me interested, it soon went down hill and I though that the some of the wording was very cheesy ... some things I could just not picture people saying.
