Black is a contemporary version of the classic fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast. Maxwell has been living isolated for years after a traumatic event that left him scarred in more ways than one. His subterfuge is his library, which is open to the public, and books are the only company he thinks he needs, or more so, that he trusts.
Books were the only things that had been with me through it all. I’d never found solace in people; I’d found nothing but pain and betrayal and lies. Books provided shelter and support and encouragement.
But deep down in his lonely existence, he wishes, longs for something more, or better yet, someone...
But sometimes, on the nights that my thoughts overtook me, I dared to hope for someone to share my life with. I dreamed of a girl with eyes that sparkled, a laugh that made me weak in the knees, and a heart so big she could fit mine in it. Someone who could see past the moody, abrasive demeanor, and the thousand quirks that made me a man unlike any other. Someone who could see past the scar and into my soul. A revelation sliced through my heart. For the first time ever, I wanted to feel love. I’d just never found a woman brave enough to love a man like me.
But he could barely dare to dream for that. In reality, he had no hope that this woman existed, much less that she would ever cross paths with him. But the proof that dreams do could true appears right at his doorstep... Elle is on the run, lost and alone, she doesn't realize she's searching for something, or someone, to give her life a new meaning, a new direction, something to hold on too. And this brings her right to Maxwell's library, looking for a job, but finding herself with a new task, breaking down the walls he, due to his dark past, has built around himself.
Elle knows all too well about painful pasts. If there is one person that can understand him, and see beyond his scarred, rough persona, it's her.
I knew all too well about scars. How they were ugly and deformed from the outside in. Daunting slashes scraped across layers of delicate flesh. Maxwell wore his scar on his face, I wore mine on the inside. Mine festered and did not heal. My scars destroyed me and made me run; his seemed to have destroyed him and made him hide.
But healing a soul isn't the easiest of journeys and it's proven by the rough path they had ahead of them. With so many mental roadblocks, even their strong instant pull is not enough, and with the secrets they both keep, Trust proves to be their biggest challenge. Elle was such a sweet and loving character, a real mirror of the Beauty in the classic tale. Even with her sad past, she has an incredible amount of hope, and when she meets Maxwell, see can see right through his facade, that reflects a loneliness much like her own. With him, the first time in her life, she feels safe.
Their attraction was immediate, and shocking for both of them, but Maxwell is the one who truly struggles to give in. After so many years of isolation, and the nature of the tragic event from his past, it's very hard for him to give trust to someone else, specially someone that, for him, seems to good to be true, and appear at a too perfect timing. He hadn't counted and didn't believe in what Fate had reserved for him... Even with all the drawbacks the couple had and the secrets they keep, which translate into a slow building relationship, something the had no change to fight was their physical pull, the insta-lust was immediate, and it wasn't long before we got some sizzling hot, sexually charged scenes. Beware: a cold shower or a industrial sized fan may be needed! ;)
“So fucking sexy bent over, your pussy bared for me. You’re so fucking wet, sweetheart. Love seeing you so wet for my cock.”
They literally couldn't keep they hands of each other, which is awesome and gives us a true erotic romance. And his beastly character sure did transport to those scenes scenes, in a very deliciously dominant way. And boy, did the man have a dirty mouth on him (and I freaking loved every word out of it)!
Contemporary fairy tale is one of my favorite genres, and I have to say I loved this approach. For a debut novel, it's amazing the quality of the writing and character development. The story captivates from beginning to end, transporting us to that small town and that very special library, where most of the book develops.
Both characters were amazing, the storyline completely focuses on them, with almost no interaction with other people, and given it's a short story, I think it was a smart decision. I just wished that it hadn't taken that long for Maxwell to come to terms with his feelings and his error of judgment of Elle's intentions (which caused me to hurt along with her for too long). I understand these distrust and roughness were made to go along with his Beast similarity, but by extending his reactions and sometimes far too callous behavior towards her in such a short story, caused, in my opinion, the shift of attitude towards the end to be less credible and too sudden. And don't get me wrong he also had some sweet and tender moments.
"You’re the only thing that matters to me; protecting you, keeping you, being with you.”
But his suspicious mind and dark side were constantly fighting to take over. That idea would have worked perfectly in a longer story or for a shorter period, but here it became to forced. And don't get me wrong, I love this type of read-in-one-sitting type of story and would not change that! Besides that minor lack of character development / too sudden personality shift, I adored and enjoyed the hell out of it!
Black was the perfect story to indulge in some erotic romance, and contains all the elements I look for in this type of book: insta-love / lust, an OTT alpha Hero, possessive and protective and some off the charts HOT sex scenes. It has all this, and so much more! Aria Cole delivered a fantastic debut book, and I can't praise and recommend it enough, so much so, that I became an instant fan and my stalking following was guaranteed! I can't wait to put my grabby hands on White!!!
My beauty. My love. My Elle.

This was a sweet book. Insta-love, with an scarred alpha hero. I liked both characters for the most part. Although I found Elle to be ridiculously naive. A 21 year old woman that has never masturabated?? And when they get finished having sex this conversation takes place...
"Maxwell, I’m not on birth control,” she whispered, and instead of sending me running out the door, my heart fucking rattled in my chest with hope and joy. “Well, that’s an interesting turn of events, isn’t it?” I grinned as I collapsed onto her body, my head tucked against her neck. “Should I go shower or something? To make sure I don’t…get pregnant?”
Seriously? My 14 year old daughter knows that a shower isn't going to save you from getting pregnant. Did Elle grow up in a cabbage patch?
I also thought that the hero and heroines backgrounds and the side story with Elle's father and the money could have been a little more sussed out. Overall though I thought this was a fairly decent book for this first time author (i'm assuming first time).
This kinda sucked. The content was mostly ok but the writing did not work for me. It did not flow and was disjointed. I seriously thought I had missed chapters in the beginning because of how fast he put the moves on her. It was weird.
Aside from that the hero was a jerk for much of the book. I just did not get over it instantly like the heroine. Additionally I was not a fan of the cleaning scene. Nor do I like debasement.
So....I actually will try the next one because the teaser at the end sounded interesting.
3.5 stars .This was ok at times. Hero was a bit of an ass at first and herione was a bit too naive but I enjoyed it. Sexy and sweet ! Instalove a bit too much but I love it. I loved the epilogue :)
Safety gang safe! Herione was a virgin! Hero has been celibate for at least 4 years. He does mention he had lots of women before but that's it no other details . Oh and he never had a relationship before. I felt herione was special. They didn't use condoms and he never went without before(I think he says that lol )

Black by Aria Cole is a sexy modern fairytale romance retelling of the classic tale Beauty and the Beast. Like the beast, Maxwell is a broken man who hides behinds his books and library. And so when he meets Elle, she ignites a new fiery desire inside him. And so the innocent virgin beauty falls for her beast. So if you like a modern retelling of this beloved classic with a very innocent naive heroine then this book is for you. Overall, this story was quick steamy read with your modern fairytale romance twist.
But the only thing little about it was its size because Aria Cole definitely packed a whole lot of story inside its pages.
I just love a broken hero and when his scars are of a visible nature, you can sign me right up for a ride! However, what made him that much sexier was his absolute OTT alpha ways and his immediate obsession with the heroine. He is not without his own set of insecurities though and that sometimes gets in the way of their HEA but our h is just perfect for him.
Apart from being hot as hell and totally swoony, this book also holds a surprising amount of darkness with both of their pasts still having an effect on both of them. This book has everything: suspense, a great H, hotness, sweetness and a little humour.
But most of my stars are for the scarf!

I liked this book - the writing was good, the story interesting and the sexy scenes were HOT! The only thing I had a small issue with was the heroine - she got on my nerves a little and she was a bit of a pushover. Even with my lack of love for Elle, I still enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading more by this author!
“You’re mine. Do you hear me?” I pulled her chin up to meet my gaze. “Whatever happens. You. Are. Mine.”
I'm not one to DNF books, especially these sexy kinds of novellas, but there was nothing solid in this storyline. From the start it was a jumbled mess. Random information tossed in with no rhyme or reason. Constant contradictions caused mass confusion on every level.
I'm sure there is potential here, the author just didn't execute. I could have forced myself to finish, but at this point I know nothing short of a miracle will change my rating.
I really enjoyed this book it was a wonderful mix of love and mystery. Maxwell and Elle were perfect for each other. They both had a past and went through alot. It in turn seem to be a good balance for each other and exactly what each other needed. I don't want to say to much and give the story away but if you like insta love, alpha male who will protect whats his then you will definitely want to get this book.
The synopsis of this book really grabbed me so my expectations were pretty high going in, but unfortunately, this story just did not live up to them. While both Max and Elle had the potential to be very compelling characters, I found myself more often than not shaking my head and saying to myself "Really?!?" at things they both did and said. I wanted to love Max, I have a soft spot for a damaged hero like he was presented to be, but he is just so completely over-the-top alpha. And while I can suspend disbelief and accept an uber-alpha at times, he is too domineering and that's just not something I can get past. For someone that supposedly never went our in public or interacted with people other than for limited times in the library, once Elle entered his life he sure changed his tune, and I didn't understand that 180* flip at all. Elle had some of her own issues and secrets, and I wish they had been delved into a little deeper.
Black is well written and had the potential to be really good, but for me it just fell short.

4.5 stars Great debut book. The story is of two people abused by the fathers, who should of protected them. They are scarred, both emotionally and one physically. One is running and both are hiding. They find each other. One brings doubt and suspicion to the other. One brings love to them both. They save each other.
I have found another author who can tell a wonderful story. The characters are portrayed with emotions, both have fear, but overcome it for each other. The story, hopefully, is the first of many to come and may the next one's be as great as this one.
A sexy-modern retelling of one of my favorite fairytales. It was an enjoyable story. I love insta-love stories with alpha males. They are simple and easy to read. Sometimes I get emotionally tired of reading angst-heavy books, and it's stories like this one that provide a mental break. I liked this author's debut novel, and I will probably read her next story when it comes out.

I understand if you think I am spoiled – when I read a comparison in a blurb calling itself a “modern spin on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale” that raises certain expectations in me.
While it is an instant “Must Read” in my eyes (that I devoured in one session) it is also has to follow very specific “laws”. And while “Black” by Aria Cole itself basically only suffers from its Insta-love and is otherwise a nice romance.
I also struggled the most with the comparison to Beauty and the Beast.
For a book to live up to this comparison there has to be not only a slow growing romance (that is so NOT given in this book) but also an intense chemistry between the two leading characters.
Also there are certain characteristics the reader expects to find at specific points of the plot.
As I said this is a nice romance with interesting characters but the use of a Tag like Beauty and the Beast is a double edged sword – that on one side might be drawing readers of a certain kind – but on the other it is raising an expectation that this book cannot meet - which might result in less positve reviews.
I believe the prospects of this story would be better without this comparison. Maxwell and Belle are strong yet vulnerable characters – dominant yet insecure so, if the Tag had been erased and the plot had given them more time to fall in love this could have been a beautiful story.
But HEY – this is only my very personal opinion and it might be the next person feels totally different – and as it is not a bad book by all means – you should give it a try.
Black by Aria Cole is a great debut novel. Beauty and the Beast-esque, the story is filled with romance, insta-love, heat, and a sexy obsessed alpha hero who fills the role of "beast" in all the best ways.
Maxwell Black is the scarred hero, who has kept himself separated from the small town and the people he grew up with. Never truly venturing out of the safety of his library. That is, until the beautiful Elle McKellan appeared on his library steps seeking a job and needing his help.
Has the beast finally met his beauty? Or will their separate pasts keep them apart? I very much recommend reading to find out.
Super possessive, obsessive, and protective H. If you like a H that is desperate for the h, you will love this one. I loved that he wanted the h all the time. Hot and sexy story too.
I found this really hard to give a star rating because there were a lot of things I didn't like, but I still really enjoyed reading the book. My problems with it were all personal taste in terms of how people treat their partners, if a not so nice person redeems themselves, if I felt their reactions matched what was going on or just the characters thoughts/feelings matching their actions.
There was times I widened my eyes and thought in my head, holy shit that was real rapey, and considering I absolutely love dominant characters and dubious consent, I should have still loved it here, but I think the way the characters thoughts were written didn't match their actions.
He was SUPER dominant, where at times it felt jerky, and I guess he's meant to because that's him, but if I'm seeing her POV saying she's having an anxiety attack and he's feeling her up (as strangers meeting two seconds ago) and tells me she can't trust men (legit thought she was a rape survivor, she wasn't thank the lord, maybe that's why I was so hesitant?) I'm just not going to feel comfortable. And when he told her to shut her mouth or he'd fuck her against the window for everyone to see? That would be OK with me, if before she hadn't been thinking thoughts that went against that being ok.
Really, they're both a tad insecure and there's lots of not telling people stuff and him telling her she can't leave him because he owns her. It felt odd. If he calls her property, and she walks off angry about it, I can't be happy. If she blushed or something, because personally, I'd be blushing if someone said that to me, it's okay to read. There's a fine line between coming off as really toxic but just saying they're in love, and actually having a relationship where someone's dominant and it's wanted. (I mean, she says at one point she likes sex with him that's loving and slow, but he let his beast out of the cage and she didn't like it because he was cruel, but isn't that not loving EVERY part of him?)
It just wasn't something that redeemed all its faults for me I guess, but it was a quick fun read and VERY well written.
I do not want to insult anyone. I can understand what it takes to not only write a novel, but to have the guts to publish one. I also realize this is the debut novel for this author, which hopefully means things will only look up from here on out. It's probably best if I end it here and not say anything else because that old adage about not saying anything nice is shouting to me in my ears. I should listen, but...
I usually love modern-day twists on fairy tales. So this take on Beauty and the Beast intrigued me.
Our "beast," Maxwell, never really made it past his beastly ways. He was a very rich, over-the-top-alpha-male, I-must-mark-you-as-mine, I've-had-a-horrible-past-to-justify-being-an-asshole, claim-you-as-my-property, moody douchebag, which just happens to be everything I hate in a hero. And we learn all this in chapter one.
Our beauty, Elle (notice it's not Belle!), is a meek virgin who comes from a quasi-abusive background where she witnessed her gambling-indebted, addict of a father beat on her mom. Then when the loan sharks come collecting, she is the payment. At least that's what is alluded. She gets so nervous meeting Maxwell that she suffers a panic attack, so we believe she has been raped or used sexually in some way. So how can she later claim she is a virgin? This, one of the first of many inconsistencies plaguing this novel, had me scratching my head.
Ridiculous can't adequately describe the book. Seriously, I said many times, "I bet (add stereotypically predictable plot point here) will happen next," and I was right every single time. I gave myself a headache from all the eye rolls I suffered at the hands of this book.
I can say that at least the author can construct properly written sentences. I did not find any glaringly obvious grammar mistakes, but I was kind of distracted by the eye rolling. I know, I know, why did I finish it if I didn't like it? I had to see if it got better. I was let down.
I know others have enjoyed it. I might have, too, if the author claimed it was a satire. Sadly, there was no such proclamation. Therefore, there will be no more of the series from me.
Usually I am all about the "Beauty & The Beast" themed books. I love them. There is something about a woman taming the Beast. He's rough and hardened but when she walk into his live he falls for her and her alone. That's book crack people. Pure book crack.
This book walked those lines but with a few things it crossed it and not into the territory I liked. First there is Elle, she was a bit to naive for my liking. Sometimes I can tolerate and in this case I could not. At her age she should know that showering after sex will not stop you from getting pregnant. I just can't even with her right there.
I know this was insta love. I know I shouldn't read books with it cause I never like it. But this was B&TB ish and I like that story line. So I gave it a shot and it fell flat for me. I just don't think he would of fell that fast for someone.
One other thing, he was way to over the top alpha for me. I know, as if that is even possible, it was here. I do not like that she was thinking she was having an anxiety attack while he was touching her and it continued. That is to rapey for me. I was not comfortable with that, I don't know how she was. The whole relationship was splattered with toxic stuff instead of a mutual dominate relationship that it should of come across as.
I am giving this a 3 just because I think the author has potential. If I didn't think the author had potential I may have rated this less.
He was maddening, frustrating. Sharp-tongued and sexy as hell. One minute, he was undoing me with his words; the next, he was all business. A wry smile turned my lips and I followed his hulky body to the circulation desk. I was eager for more of his kind of training.
Why, hello Aria Cole. This is my first of Miss Cole's books and it was a fantastic start. I must say that I love Beauty and the Beast retellings and this one held me captivated. Maxwell Black, our hero, our beast, has been deeply hurt by his father, scarred for life. He’s kept himself hidden from society for years. The only part he shares of himself is his books, in which he has opened his library to the public. But he yearns for love, a woman who’ll accept him for who he is, scars and all. Elle McKellan is running away from her life, from a father who cares more about money than he does about her. From being sold to the highest bidder because of his debts. Elle and Maxwell are a fireball of a combination. From the first moment he lays eyes on his beauty he doesn’t want to let her go. Elle finds Maxwell alluring, sexual, gorgeous and she’s not sure if she could ever leave him. But when her life comes crashing down around her, her beast will have to find a way to save and keep her all at once. I loved every second of this story.
It's a modern fairy tale with a dark touch. Beauty (in a real and empowering sense of beauty) and Beast (a man trapped and hidden by a scary face). I loved it. It's very hot and a bit surprising. You get to see the Beast/Maxwell and the Beauty/Elle by a whole new perspective and this way is so much more... charming. I always get attached to the characters' background stories and this book has it. Elle and Maxwell both have a obscure past, and while you enjoy their sexy encounters you understand what happened to them, what led them to that place in life. It's a great read! Great Debut Novel! Congratulations Aria!
Elle is running from her past and Maxwell is uncertain about his future until he meets Elle. Elle has a lot of secrets, secrets that won’t stay hidden for long. Maxwell has his own secrets but Elle secrets refuse to stay hidden. Maxwell is the handsome library owner who is terrifying, intimidating and completely straight forward when it comes to how he feels for Elle. Elle is desperate to work in the library but Maxwell gives her more than she could ever imagine. He will do what it takes to protect her and have no intention of letting her go. This is a great story for anyone looking for a good instant attraction, lustful read with a little bit of suspense and a HEA.
