A sidestory/sequel for Yukito Ayatsuji's popular YA/light-novel supernatural/mystery novel:
Another

The story starts with a supernatural happening: A 26 years old man found himself 'waking up' from total darkness as a ghost. He had no idea how he was dead and who had killed him in his own villa. The ghost wandered in and out of his villa and the surrounding forest looking for his own corpse, believing he could find peace only after regaining his memory and discovering his own body.
Shortly afterward, the ghost realized his own sister and brother-in-law both knew he was dead but the couple was hiding this fact from everyone else, his beloved 10 years old nephew had clearly once witnessed his death scene but was now (out of shock and grief) in total denial about his death. The only person who was able to 'see' him, the only one who was willing to help him was the teenage daughter of a visiting family's friend, who could see...ghosts?
This murder mystery is pretty intriguing (why would the young man turned up dead and became a ghost? Why would his own sister hide this fact?) and although I had my own suspicion when I read this novel still the final outcome took me by surprise. Misaki Mei, the heroine of the story (the teenager who supposedly could see ghosts) plays her role as a mysterious, quiet girl quite well.
The final plot twist of the story is the same like the author digging a huge sinkhole for the readers to fall into and in my opinion he isn't entirely playing fair about it, still it's an enjoyable light-novel mystery.

Dĩ nhiên là không hay bằng "Another" rồi, cơ mà mình vẫn đọc cuốn này ngấu nghiến, vì độ hấp dẫn của câu chuyện vẫn rất lớn, và tài năng viết truyện để kích thích độc giả theo dõi câu chuyện của bác Yukito Ayatsuji vẫn rất khủng :)) Cú plot twist đúng là không thể ngờ được luôn đó trời ơi :D Mặc dù mình đã đọc ""Another" từ trước đó, nhưng mà mình vẫn không thể hình dung được là được cốt truyện đó với câu chuyện trong "Another S/O" lại có nét tương đồng như vậy. Cưng bác tác giả ghê gớm, những đoạn giải thích, phân tích tình huống... thật là hay luôn ấy :)) Bìa sách lại đẹp khủng khiếp nữa trời ơi <3 <3 <3

As a fan of horror fiction, I recently delved into the chilling world of «Another Episode S» by Yukito Ayatsuji. However, despite my initial enthusiasm, this book left me with mixed feelings.
The tale revolves around Mei's entanglement with Teruya Sakaki, a former student ensnared in the malevolent clutches of Class 3's ominous curse. As Teruya meanders through the ethereal realms as a specter, his fixation takes hold, urging him to untangle the web of circumstances encompassing his untimely demise, his sister's web of deceit, and the elusive verities lurking beneath the surface. United in purpose, Mei and Teruya embark on an otherworldly odyssey, braving the shadows, and endeavoring to unearth the secrets that enshroud his tragic fate.

Đắn đo suy nghĩ nên cho 3 sao hay 4 sao mãi, thôi ở giữ 3,75/5 sao nhen
2/3 truyện đọc chán, cứ lòng vòng về vấn đề của nhân vật chính mãi mà không thấy đi tìm hiểu gì cả, khá bị động. Mà do đọc truyện của bác Yukito nhiều nên biết rõ phong cách của bác, những câu nào của nhân vật mà cứ lặp đi lặp lại hoài đến phát chán thì đều sẽ chứa đựng mấu chốt rất quan trọng nên cũng ráng đọc tiếp xem sao. Và đùng, đúng là không phụ lòng mong mỏi của mình, cái plot twist gần cuối truyện chọi vô mặt làm muốn rớt cả hàm. Đã chuẩn bị sẵn tâm lí từ mấy bộ khác của bác là thể nào cũng có twist hết hồn nhưng thiệt tình là không đoán nổi! Cực kì bất ngờ. Tự dưng cái plot twist này làm mình nhớ đến truyện ngắn So far trong Zoo quá...
Bộ này cái bìa truyện lừa tình quá, nhìn bìa thấy hai chị em sinh đôi nhà Mei cứ tưởng câu chuyện sẽ xoay quanh gia đình Mei không hà, đúng là ánh trăng lừa dối mà. Mặc dù không hay và gay cấn bằng bộ Another thần thánh nhưng đọc cũng tạm được. Lời bạt khúc cuối bác Yukito còn nhử hàng sẽ có phần 3 Another 2001 nữa làm hóng quá đi! Một chuyến phiêu lưu bí ẩn của lớp 9-3 Bắc Yomi mới sắp bắt đầu rồi

Not as strong as the two longer novels in the series, but still a solid read that explores the nature of grief through a horror/mystery lens.

I was a little wary of this book. I've read or watched every version of Another that's officially been made available in English, starting with the anime, then the original novel, and finally the manga. I noticed I was burning out on the story by the time I got to the manga. Could a sequel novel work for me? Would it be fresh and new enough?
First, I should mention that this book actually collects two different works: Another Episode S, a lengthy story that takes place during the events of Another but isn't directly related to the curse affecting North Yomi's third-year Class 3, and Another Episode 0, a short prequel manga starring Reiko, Koichi's aunt. I'll write about them separately, but my final verdict is that this had some interesting moments but was largely a disappointment.
Warning: Do NOT read this review if you haven't read or watched Another. My review will include major spoilers for that work.
Another Episode S:
It's been a while since I last read Another, but I think this takes place shortly after third-year Class 3's first death. It's presented as a story Mei tells Koichi after they've survived the events of Another. Mei heard that a man she knew, 25-year-old Teruya Sakaki, had once been in North Yomi's third-year Class 3 during an “on” year, so she wanted to talk to him to find out more about the curse. However, by that point he had apparently died and become a ghost.
The story is told from Teruya's POV, as he tries to figure out how and why he died and why his sister and her husband have lied to everyone and told them that he's gone on a trip. He's convinced that, if he can just find his body, everything will be made clear to him. Unfortunately, all he has to guide him are vague and disquieting snatches of memory. Although his memories are too wispy and jumbled to help Mei in her search for an end to the curse, she agrees to help him find his body.
I've read Ayatsuji's The Decagon House Murders . I know he's capable of writing mysteries that don't resort to cheating, but you wouldn't know it from his Another novels. Another cheated by having the POV character simply not think about certain important details. Another Episode S cheated by bending over backwards to choose an unreliable narrator. Considering that Mei was telling this story to Koichi, it really should have been told from Mei's POV, but that would have ruined all of the story's biggest surprises.
Like Another, Another Episode S was incredibly repetitive. Some of the repetition made sense: Teruya was very confused by and bothered about his death and had nothing else to do but obsess about the few things he could still remember. Still, it got a bit old. He'd tell readers something, and then spend the next three or so pages either telling readers the same thing in different ways or reassuring readers that he really meant what he was saying (for example, pages and pages on his death and his reappearance in the living world as a ghost). Also, as in Another, there were lots of seemingly random bolded words and phrases. I could understand why "appear" was bolded, but some of the other choices made no sense to me.
Despite all that bloat, this was a quick read. Unfortunately, the revelations weren't that great. The events surrounding Teruya's death weren't that hard to figure out. Neither was the reason his sister and her husband did what they did, although, I have to say, it was incredibly stupid on their part. You'd think one of them would have realized they were actually making things worse for themselves in the long run. The story's biggest surprise was Teruya himself, but, like I said, I considered that cheating on Ayatsuji's part. I think he might have recognized that, too, because he spent 20 pages, through Koichi, laying out and explaining all the various details that showed why things turned out the way they did. About the only thing that wasn't part of the final analysis was the odd way Teruya tended to refer himself. While I did think that was a clever clue, I was still annoyed at the decisions Ayatsuji made for this story. Was this really the best he could do?
Another Episode 0:
This very short manga shows Reiko at her older sister's shrine, telling her that Koichi is about to come stay with the family for a while – this part takes place just before the beginning of Another. Then a flashback shows Reiko during her own time in North Yomi third-year Class 3, when she first learned about the curse and watched people she knew die.
Oh, this manga. Not much happens, but there's so much emotion packed into such a small number of pages.
You absolutely need to have read or watched some version of Another for it to have the proper impact, because the writer (in this case, Hiro Kiyohara) doesn't bother to explain why these moments are important in the larger scheme of things.
Those who are familiar with the series know that Reiko was the casualty, the extra person, during Koichi's time in North Yomi third-year Class 3. Although she managed to survive her own “on” year, her beloved older sister was one of the ones who died, and Reiko herself died in a later “on” year (I believe she was a teacher then?).
Yomiyama is the worst place to live. Even the people who survive the curse end up scarred by it, like Teruya. And those who are killed by it might have to go through it again in the future, like Reiko. And dang it, Reiko loved Koichi so much, and yet the curse wouldn't even allow him to remember her after she died a second time.

- Two full-color illustrations - three, if you count the one on the inside of the cover, although that's just the uncropped version of one of the two color illustrations included in the book.
- Character sketches, cover roughs, the line drawings for several of the manga covers, and a few storyboards.
- Afterwords by both Yukito Ayatsuji and Hiro Kiyohara.
Rating Note:
If I were rating them separately, I'd probably give Another Episode S 2.5 stars and Another Episode 0 3.5 stars. I went with 2.5 stars for my final rating because the bulk of this book was devoted to Ayatsuji's sequel.
[I rounded down for Goodreads because the main thing I remember about this book is being very annoyed by the ending of the novel portion. I do recall the manga being quite good - I'd recommend at least reading that, if you're at all a fan of Another.]

Rating Note:
If I were rating them separately, I'd probably give Another Episode S 2.5 stars and Another Episode 0 3.5 stars. I went with 2.5 stars for my final rating because the bulk of this book was devoted to Ayatsuji's sequel.
[I rounded down for Goodreads because the main thing I remember about this book is being very annoyed by the ending of the novel portion. I do recall the manga being quite good - I'd recommend at least reading that, if you're at all a fan of Another.]

A lackluster, barely related sidequel to Another. Misaki's the only character from the main story who plays a role here, and she's mainly a plot device to resolve the plot. Kouichi only shows up in the frame narrative, which serves to pad out the narrative by fifty pages as Misaki explains away the plot holes -- and to make matters worse, one of those plot holes is introduced solely to add an extra bit of mystery and is resolved with a casual, "Oh, that was just a misunderstanding. Pay it no mind."
The only thing of real interest here is the ending, which implies that Ayatsuji's going to write a proper sequel someday.

Another was one of my favorite reads last year. I was so in love with the story that I bought the manga adaptation and this book too. The manga was awesome, but this one was somewhat disappointing. Episode S was really boring at the beginning, almost until the end. I was about to give up when a plot twist appeared and left me dumbfounded. However, that twist alone doesn’t mean that I changed my opinion about the story.
By other side, I really enjoyed Reiko’s side of the story in Episode 0. The art was great and I loved how it was related to the original main story.

Dưới ánh chiều tà của Yomi”, cửa hiệu búp bê của nhà cô bạn của cậu, Misaki Mei. Phải hai tháng rồi cậu mới đến đây. Lần cuối cùng là hôm giỗ mẹ cậu, ngày 27 tháng Bảy. Hôm đó cậu biết được Mei cùng gia đình sắp đi nghỉ ở biệt thự bên bờ biển.
Hôm nay Mei có ở nhà, và trong lúc đang định về, Mei gọi điện cho cậu và bảo sẽ xuống ở cửa. Hai người đi xuống phòng trưng bày quen thuộc nằm dưới tầng hầm.

Mà vấn đề là góc nhìn này lại rất hợp lý, hợp lý đến độ không thể tìm ra một điểm bất thường nào cho đến khi lật đến chương cuối cùng. Chỉ một dòng văn, mọi thứ bị đảo ngược, những điều bình thường lập tức bị đẩy thành cao trào. Rồi sự thật trong suốt, rõ ràng đến tàn nhẫn được hé lộ. Như khối thuỷ tinh lấp lánh dưới ánh mặt trời, từ từ rơi xuống, vỡ vụn, chỉ còn lại cảm giác xót xa.

Another S được xem như phần ngoại truyện của Another, tác phẩm cùng với series Thập Giác Quán đã làm nên tên tuổi cho tác giả Yukito Ayatsuji, là nhà văn đã hồi sinh được thể loại “Trinh thám cổ điển” bằng những tác phẩm của mình. Thế nên cũng chẳng cần phải nói quá nhiều về văn phong để mà làm gì. Những miêu tả chi tiết, những diễn biến tâm lý tinh tế được ông khắc hoạ là điều không khó để thấy trong những câu chuyện trinh thám khác. Nhưng cái thành công của ông là luôn biết cách để tác phẩm của mình nhuốm một màu sắc gì đó bí ẩn, nằm giữa hư và thực. Và cả cái cách ông đánh lừa độc giả, nó hay đến mức người bị lừa cuối cùng cũng chỉ có thể cười mãn nguyện, vì đã bị lừa một cách xuất sắc như vậy mà thôi.

Another Episode S/ O khi đứng bên cạnh Another thì chỉ là một cái bóng mờ nhạt. Tuy nhiên, mình vẫn ráng đọc đến cuối xem tác giả có thể cứu vãn câu chuyện tẻ ngắt này không. Nhưng không, kết thúc làm cho mình có cảm tưởng tất cả mọi thứ chỉ như là một trò đùa.

Khi bắt đầu Another S/0 mình đã rất chán nản vì cảm giác nó bị dài lê thê và không gì hấp dẫn. Thậm chí mình đã định từ bỏ câu chuyện này cho đến khi Misaki Mei xuất hiện. Cái kết của Another S/0 thật sự gây bất ngờ lớn với mình vì chân tướng hình thành nên linh hồn của Sakaki Teruya lại khác xa với những gì mình suy đoán.
Nếu mọi người đang mong đợi vào lớp 9-3 và lời giải thích cho tai ương vì sao lại có thì Another S/0 sẽ không đáp ứng được. Đây là một câu chuyện khác không xoay quanh lời nguyền lớp 9-3, mà là về cuộc sống của người sau khi vướng phải tai ương (?) Theo Yukito, Another S/0 là mắc nối cho phần Another kế tiếp. Vì nó không trực tiếp kể về lớp 9-3 và là cầu nối cho Another 2001 mà ông đang viết nên tựa đề truyện “S/0“ có nghĩa là “Start 0”? Hoặc S/0 là tên nhân vật chính - So. Yukito không giải thích về tựa đề, ông ấy nói khi mọi người đọc và nghĩ tại sao tựa truyện là S/0 thì sẽ cảm thấy rất thú vị.

It was a nice filler for the series, but it has nothing to do with the main plotline of Another. If you are a fan, this is a must-have for your collection. The translation was good and wasn't too difficult to read. Mei Misaki went on vacation with her family and get rapped up in a ghost mystery.

I've read several of Yukito Ayatsuji's books, and maybe it's the entire Another series, but he is terrible at writing well-thought out characters and plots, instead focusing on dragging out the runtime for no reason whatsoever. This book can be easily condensed to half its length. How many pages are spent with the narrator saying things like "I'm dead," "I'm a ghost," "I reappeared and disappeared," "I can't see myself in the mirror," "No one can see me," etc etc? It's really, really, really annoying. I honestly wanted to strangle the narrator. Like, we get it already! Shut up and move on, please!
Anyway, this story is kind of like a "filler" arc, and it really shows. Unnecessary fluff that takes place in between major events, and while it may set up for "Another 2001," ultimately, there's no major changes that will change the plot in the future. You can consider it a little bit of worldbuilding, because it's set in a place that is not Yomiyama. Rather, this is the place where Mei Misaki spent her summer vacation. She's also the one initially narrating the story to the original narrator in "Another," but because she's basically omniscient here, it has to switch to another narrator for most of the story, until it switches back to her when the twist is revealed.
If you thought Kouichi Sakakibara as the narrator for "Another" was an unreliable narrator, then the narrator here is even worse. So this guy tells us that he's the ghost of Teruya Sakaki and he died, but his family is covering up his death, and he has no idea where his corpse is. The entire situation revolving his death was very boring and there were no twists. I was actually hoping his sister killed him on purpose, but no, he just got accidentally pushed over the railing, and broke his neck. They just covered up the death because her husband was running for office and didn't want the messy news drama, but to be honest, since his body was found later, they're going to be charged for mishandling human remains and obstruction of justice and other things, making it even worse for themselves. If they had just called 911 (or 119 since it's Japan) and reported truthfully about how the accident occured, literally none of the events of this book would have happened. So the twist is that the narrator isn't Teruya at all, but his nephew Sou, who was so traumatized by watching his uncle die right in front of him, he manifested a new consciousness that was convinced it was Teruya's ghost. Mei knew all of this already, so she just played along with the kid's fantasies until it was time to tell him the truth. So really, this resulted in absolutely zero character development and every single event which happened here is irrelevant. You can just imagine it's a side quest in a game, and I feel like you can skip this novel and just read "Another 2001" instead, where the interesting events happen. There's absolutely nothing valuable in this book, because Mei doesn't learn anything new or see a real ghost, Sou is just in denial, and even the author knew nothing made sense because the last 20 pages or so was spent justifying how Sou could possibly exist as a "ghost". Weak, weak, weak stuff.
I did like how the Teruya character ties back in with the cursed "on years" in "Another," but it feels like a teaser. It wasn't all that major, except that in the end, Kouichi realizes here was another person who deeply loved someone who ended up as being the casualty (and thereby the cause of the calamities) of their particular year, and faded from their memories after they graduated from middle school. For Teruya, it was a fellow classmate called Satsuki, and for Kouichi, it was his aunt Reiko. Despite the depths of their feelings towards these people, they will eventually forget everything over a period of time, until even looking at a photo of them, they only see a blank space. This was the only emotional payoff in the entire book, which is the only reason I'm not giving it 1*, although believe me, I was quite tempted to. Oh, and the short manga at the end titled "Episode Zero" was quite good and well-drawn despite its brevity, showing Reiko's POV.
Now onwards to "Another 2001"!

Lâu lắm rồi mới "động" não vào một cuốn trinh thám kinh dị. Another S/O tiền truyện của Another đã được xuất bản năm 2015 và được làm thành anime. Đánh giá chung về ANOTHER là xuất sắc với một cuốn "mystery" hội tụ cả ba yếu tố "Kinh dị", "Bí ẩn" và "Bất ngờ" (theo Asagiri Kafka).
Tóm tắt Another:
Nhân vật chính là Koichi một cậu học sinh sắp lên lớp 9 chuyển đến thành phố Yomiyama để sống ở nhà bà ngoại vì bố cậu đi công tác xa. Hàng loạt chuyện lạ bắt đầu khi cậu chuyển vào lớp 9-3, khi tất cả những người trong lớp và cả thị trấn đều đang che dấu một điều gì đó, nhưng không ai nói với cậu. Tình cờ cậu và Mei được kéo lại gần nhau. Mei là một cô gái bí ẩn có đôi mắt được một nghệ nhân làm búp bê chế tạo và tình cờ cô cũng chính là người bị nghi ngờ cho điều mà tất cả mọi người sợ hãi. Khi bắt đầu khai giảng được một tháng, hàng tháng sau đó sẽ có ít nhất một người trong lớp chết (có thể tự sát, tại nạn...) và sẽ không thể biết trước ai sẽ là người tiếp theo.
Và điều đáng sợ là làm sao chấm dứt được hiện tượng xảy ra vào những năm định sẵn này. Liệu khi kẻ "đã chết" bị lật mặt thì hiện tượng này có chấm dứt... Nói chung kết cực hay và không thể lường được.

Lâu lắm rồi mới "động" não vào một cuốn trinh thám kinh dị. Another S/O tiền truyện của Another đã được xuất bản năm 2015 và được làm thành anime. Đánh giá chung về ANOTHER là xuất sắc với một cuốn "mystery" hội tụ cả ba yếu tố "Kinh dị", "Bí ẩn" và "Bất ngờ" (theo Asagiri Kafka).
Tóm tắt Another:
Nhân vật chính là Koichi một cậu học sinh sắp lên lớp 9 chuyển đến thành phố Yomiyama để sống ở nhà bà ngoại vì bố cậu đi công tác xa. Hàng loạt chuyện lạ bắt đầu khi cậu chuyển vào lớp 9-3, khi tất cả những người trong lớp và cả thị trấn đều đang che dấu một điều gì đó, nhưng không ai nói với cậu. Tình cờ cậu và Mei được kéo lại gần nhau. Mei là một cô gái bí ẩn có đôi mắt được một nghệ nhân làm búp bê chế tạo và tình cờ cô cũng chính là người bị nghi ngờ cho điều mà tất cả mọi người sợ hãi. Another S/O
Về Another S
Đây là phần truyện xảy ra trước Another. Nếu Another tập trung tìm ra người thừa trong lớp 9-3, Another S lại là câu chuyện đi tìm bí mật cái chết từ lời kể của hồn ma Sakaki. Mở đầu bằng việc Mei kể lại mùa hè năm lớp 8 của cô cho Sakakibara Koichi, sau khi sự việc ở Another đã được giải quyết, việc Mei gặp được hồn ma của Sakaki.
Sử dụng cách dẫn truyện từ góc nhìn của hồn ma Sakaki, nhưng lại là một hồn ma mất trí nhớ, những kí ức ngắt quãng, việc ức chế không nhớ được lý do chết của mình, sự lo lắng khi không biết xác mình ở đâu, việc nghĩ rằng do đó mà bản thân không siêu thoát được...từ đó tác giả dẫn người đọc giải quyết những bí ẩn quanh biệt thư bên biển của Sakaki, cũng như mối liên hệ giữa Sakaki và lời nguyền lớp 9-3, là một người chạy trốn lời nguyền sẽ nghĩ như nào.
Truyện sử dụng nhiều lần biện pháp lặp để thể hiện vẻ lo lắng bất an của hồn ma Sakaki, ngoài ra việc bẻ ngoặt những lý thuyết đưa ra ban đầu về cái chết của tác giả tuy không mới nhưng cũng khiến người chưa đọc tác phẩm nào của Yukito phải ngạc nhiên (Người đọc cũng có thể nhận thấy những chìa khoá mà tác giả đưa ra như: sự khác lạ trong cách xưng hô của Mei với Sakaki, việc tính cách So trở nên trầm lặng hơn, những đoạn hội thoại ở Sketch... )
Another S cũng giải thích thêm về tính cách của Mei, đôi mắt giả của Mei có tác dụng gì không (Bìa vẽ Mei thực sự rất đẹp). Phần cuối quay lại câu chuyện giữa Mei và Koichi, cùng một số câu hỏi Koichi để lửng chờ sự giải thích ở phần tiếp theo của Another
Nhận xét chung thì Another S dành cho độ tuổi 15-20 nên không quá u ám, bi kịch, tất cả chỉ đứng trong góc nhìn và cách xử lý vấn đề của những nhân vật của lớp 9-3. Nhưng từ Another quay về Another S mình đều rất thích tầng ý nghĩa tác giả nói về cái chết, về sự sống sau cái chết, về cách những người còn lại đối diện với mất mát, hay cách Mei và Koichi cùng cố gắng ngừng lời nguyền lớp 9-3.
P.S: đoạn về tình yêu và lời cuối Sakaki nói thực lòng ấn tượng với mình. Đúng kiểu có sự kết nối giữa những người đã chết.
Về Another O:
Là phần Manga do Hiro Kiyohara vẽ phân đoạn Koichi đến gặp dì Reiko của Another, nét vẽ siêu đẹp (kiểu mình cực thích). Hình tượng các nhân vật vẽ ra đúng như hình dung của mình khi đọc truyện.

One day, Yomiyama North Middle School lost a beloved member of the infamous Class 3-3. The students were so heartbroken by this loss, they carried on pretending as if she were still alive. Unknown to the students, they have unintentionally invited the spirits of the dead into their school by treating the dead as if they were still alive.
Years later, a bizarre curse now looms over the school, where a cursed student enters every odd year. If this cursed student is not discovered and dealt with in a timely manner, mysterious deaths and constant misfortune will visit randomly selected members of the school until the cursed student has been removed. Koichi Sakakibara believes that either he or a mysterious girl he meets at the hospital one night may just be the cursed student this year, or it could potentially be something far more complicated.
Another definitely has an interesting setup. The creepy gothic atmosphere of a cursed school. The classic ghost story vibes. The eerie undertones of old urban legends coming to life. There’s some really cool stuff in here that slowly evolves into an interesting conclusion that can be difficult to solve.
Unfortunately, I think the series is held back by quite a few shortcomings. It has a cast of bland characters that speak in robotic wooden dialogue. The pacing is dragged out far beyond necessary. The cryptic manner in which all the characters talk to each other often feels more awkward, vague and annoying rather than actually being disturbing or unsettling. Much of the logic revolving around the curse also feels made up on the spot which makes the mystery elements feel inconsistent and impossible to solve since they constantly change on the fly.
Another is a fairly good gothic supernatural mystery, but often suffers from its own cryptic nature and inconsistent mythology.

Another: Episode S is a weird side-story/midquel to Another; it takes place during the time before the summer trip, when Mei goes on a family vacation. Sakakibara only appears in the framing device, as Mei is putatively telling him the story, although in fact it’s told from the first-person perspective of a different character, the ghost of Teruya Sakaki, who wants to know how he died and why he became a ghost.
Unfortunately, I found this novel quite tedious, in spite of it being less than half as long as Another. The heavy use of flashbacks made for repetitive reading, and until the last chapter, everyone is remarkably passive, wandering around and cryptically talking past one another, but not really driving the action forward. And although things briefly perk up in the last chapter, they come crashing down again. The twist in Another is genuinely clever, and enhances the novel. Here, Yukito Ayatsuji flew too close to the Sun; the twist ending invalidates the rest of the novel rather than enhancing it, a sadly common pitfall, and the thirty page epilogue where Mei and Sakakibara try to psychologically analyze a character is incredibly tedious. Have we learned nothing from Psycho?

Leyendo los agradecimientos de Yukito Ayatsuji, queda claro que sabe cuál es el personaje que le dio la fuerza a la historia principal de Another.
Dicho esto, ese ojo azul de Mei tiene muchas historias que puede contar. Dicho esto quiero decir que el final de la historia me gustó y no me gustó. Me gustó porque es un giro que no te esperas, aunque sí hay pistas en la historia no las tomas muy enserio. Lleva la historia siempre por un camino y al final que siempre no. No me gusta porque el sello de Another, aparte de la "maldición" es el ojo de la muñeca. Y que al final se le quita el mérito, a mi gusto, no me gustó.
Pero bueno, no esperaba una historia como Another y creo eso ayudó a que me entretuviera la historia. La historia puede ser otra vez un poco repetitiva pero bueno por lo menos ahora creo que tiene un poco más de sustento para ello.
En cuanto a la historia del manga, está bastante entretenido saber un poco del año en que Reiko estuvo en la clase 3. No he leído los mangas de Another, pero espero que las ilustraciones sean como este manga, son sumamente buenas.
Y volver a aclarar, si buscas un historia como la historia principal de Anoder, eso no va a pasar. Lo que sí es que vas a encontrar a la Mei de siempre.

🖤 This is the side story / prequel for Another series. Another S is about the ghost of Teruya Sakaki whom was also a former student from the "curse" Class 3-3. You must read Another series first to get a clear picture of the urban legend in that area. So the ghost of Takaki was wandering and lonely. It needs help from Mei to search for his remained body. So this is the best part of the book. The whole story turns into mystery genre when they both started the investigation. Mind you, there will be a shocking truth discovered by Mei which you won't see it coming. I like the message that Ayatsuji sensei wanted to deliver here. It was about the regrets after the suicidal attempt.

Setelah membaca Another I dan II karangan Ayatsuji Yukito, sekarang tibalah membaca kisah Misaki Mei dalam Another Episode S. Buku ini bukan lanjutan dari Another I atau II. Memang sih ceritanya ada sedikit nyambung dengan kedua buku tersebut. Tapi di Episode S ini agak beda sedikit.
Buku ini beneran membuat penasaran. Kenapa hantu Sakaki tidak ingat? Sebenarnya di mana jasadnya? Apa yang terjadi dengannya? Apakah Mei berhasil mendapat petunjuk tentang teror kelas 3-3? Kasihan sekali hantu Sakaki ini.
Setelah baca dan baca, eh ternyata plot twist!
Di buku ini ada bagian-bagian bab Introduction, Sketch, dan Outroduction. Bagian Sketch adalah bagian dialog yang dilanjutkan dengan cerita dari sudut pandang Tuan Hantu. Episode S:
Ayatsuji did it again. I was completely unable to predict the twist, and had no idea what was going on until it was laid out in front of me. The clues were all there from the start, but I once again ended up focusing on the wrong ones and assuming things that I probably never should have considered givens in the first place. Such is the genius of his writing, I guess.
Episode 0:
It's too short for me to write a proper review, but it was interesting, I guess. It was nice seeing a little of Reiko's backstory and how she got to where she is now ("now"). I especially liked noticing the parallels between what Ritsuko told her and what she later went on to tell Kouichi, like the "it's important whether you're cool or not" line. That part really gave depth to a character that had always been mostly a background one.
I also like the art style. It's pretty and conveys things well.
