Love in a Post-Apocalypse
Sixty years after the end of everything the city of Bluette survives, controlled by a malignant sect. It’s a place where men rule, girls receive no education and are matched at 16 to the highest bidder. Everything ‘modern’ is considered evil and prohibited. No one is ever permitted to leave the city and outside is a murderous wasteland of despair. Orphans Kruge and Jeyna are about to come of age – they have been devoted to each other through all the years of terror in this harsh regime and sworn never to be parted. But the beautiful Jeyna has been betrayed by the Warden and matched to the recently widowed Master of the Sewers, who has paid well for his bride. Kruge, the carpenter’s apprentice, has been swiftly banished to the Scraps, under the control of the Keeper. Jeyna is heartbroken; she will not accept her fate and escapes to find Kruge. She is pursued by ruthless Enforcers on horseback, whose task it is to bring runaways back, dead or alive. Jeyna hides in the outland where there are no rules; aware she knows nothing of the way of the world - only that she has to reach Kruge, or die in the attempt.

J & K 4EVER is a powerful young love story set in the bleak badlands of a ruined civilization.

Remy has one last obsession – to complete the restoration of his ’57 Studebaker Golden Hawk. He’s planned a road trip to Montreal to find a part he desperately needs. It’s a long way from Florida; his Chevy truck is almost as old as he is. There are doubts he’ll be able to make the drive, doubts about his bladder, his heart, but he’s determined to go.

At the very first urgent stop in the pouring rain, a dog appears from nowhere and jumps into his truck, quickly followed by a drenched teen. Scared, the girl, Ami, urgently needs a ride. She has escaped from a nearby religious cult and is desperate to find the mother who abandoned her when she was just five years old.

For Ami everything is new, all modern life was shunned at the farm. Remy worries she will be bitterly disappointed when she finally meets her mother who may not welcome her back.

One old man, a troubled teenage girl and Stan the dog are on a road trip into MAGA America where violence and grievance stalk the land. With each mile they travel towards Montreal it seems to get further away.

'Fabulous, can't-put-down story with quirky, original characters, a loveable dog and a great adventure'. ***** Roxy West on Goodreads. 8.28.24

Delaney and Asha are hired to find a missing writer who took money from the client and ran. It's December in New England. It's freezing. Turns out finding the writer is the easy part. The fact that he claims he’s being watched and told not to write anything on pain of death certainly adds a complication. What did he discover whilst researching the book he was supposed to be writing? What did the old man with dementia tell him?

Very good, cold, austere, paints a graphic picture of a post-nuclear war society with the terrible destruction involved. But the author paints hope. Would be nice to read again as it offers a sobering reality of "nothingness" that we could find ourselves into with the possession of weapons of mass destruction leading to the destruction of the post-industrial society we are currently living into. A nice narrative of two young lovers breaking out of the clench of Ministers and their imposition of an austere community because this they feel this is what would preserve their newly-reduced rudimentary life.
