Do You Want to Make a Real Living as a Writer? You'll Have to Throw Out Everything You Know

Let me guess—you’re a talented writer who is willing to do whatever it takes to make a full-time living by writing. You’ve read countless articles and books on the subject, followed the suggestions in them, but you just can’t seem to make the income leap.

Or you may be a new writer who is convinced that you’re missing something because your own experience isn’t matching up to what you’ve read is possible.

Or perhaps you’ve been moonlighting as a freelance writer for years, and you’re convinced that it’s simply not possible to quit your “real” job and do what you love full time.

Let me tell you a secret. You’ve been lied to. Yes, you heard me correctly. Lied. To.

The truth is, only about 10 percent of writers earn enough working full time to support themselves. Ten percent. That’s not something all those other how-to writing books spend a lot of time on, is it?

Luckily, there's a real solution.

I know this because I've been doing it myself for years. But in order to be successful in this business, you'll have to turn the current freelance writing working model on its head. In fact, you pretty much have to throw everything you thought you knew out the window.

What I'm talking about is a new system. One that doesn't limit a freelance writer's ability to make a great income because of time constraints. I'm talking about earning a living anyone would be proud of.
In my new book, I'll show you how to create your own Writing Empire in 30 days or less. You'll learn:

•Why most freelancers can't make a decent living—and what to do about it
•How to structure your writing business in a way that works best for your lifestyle
•How to brand your business to attract the type of clients you want
•Where to find clients and how to land the jobs
•How to structure your time in order to earn the highest possible income in the shortest amount of time
•How to hire a team of qualified, motivated writers who will help you build your Empire

And that's not all. I'll give you a step-by-step plan that will lead you to success. This plan looks in detail at your first:

•Day
•Week
•Month
•And beyond

Like I said, I structured my own business this way, so let my experience help you achieve your dreams.

Are you ready to get serious about your writing career and make some serious money? Start right now by downloading the book and learn how to make a real living with writing!

As a long-time freelance writer running a freelancing advice site, I read a lot of books that offer tips and resources to freelancers. This was the worst one I've read.

The crux of the book is that if you want to make a good living as a writer, you shouldn't be a writer, but the manager of a writing business. Since the author is a "serial entrepreneur" and not a writer, perhaps he doesn't understand that most people pursuing a freelance writing career want to...write.

He "proves" that it's not possible to make a good living as a solo writer mathematically, by assuming a goal of $100,000 annually and then demonstrating that there aren't enough hours in the day to earn that amount writing articles at $25 each. That's true, but it's hard to imagine why anyone would attempt to build a full-time career writing at those rates. There are, of course, many writers who make $100k/year from their own writing. They do it by cultivating their craft and expertise and charging quite a lot more than $25/article.

Then, after explaining in detail why he believes that you can't make a decent living on $25 articles, Kerns goes on to tell you the way to make good money is to hire a bunch of other writers and pay them $10/article. (Well, in one calculation--in others, he's suggesting paying writers $2.50/article) Similarly, after talking about how miserable your life will be if you have to crank out content 12 hours/day, he suggests that you require your writers to produce ten articles per day--in other words, work 50 hours/week or more for a $20,000 (or less) annual salary with no benefits.

Ultimately, after a long period of hiring and training a writer, increasing your business, rinsing and repeating, you will eventually get to the point where you have enough income that you can take the time to write what you want to write--something you could have achieved in much less time and without all of the complicated business aspects of an "empire" simply by developing an area of expertise and charging decent rates for your write.

But, there's more. This book is filled with misinformation and misdefined terms. "Long tail" keywords are absurdely defined as keyword phrases of more than one word (they're actually more specific terms that bring in a lower volume of highly targeted traffic, making up the "long tail" of your traffic graph), you're advised that it's "perfectly okay" to include a link to your website in your signature block on groups and forums (though many, especially professional groups, explicitly prohibit this), told bid sites will "protect you" from unfair feedback (though most bid sites don't meddle in feedback matters at all, save very specific TOS violations)...and so on, and so on, and so on.

There are a few useful tidbits here and there, but if you're not already an experienced writer/freelancer/entrepreneur, it will be very difficult to tell them apart from the blatant inaccuracies.

Summary:

How to Build a Writing Empire in 30 Days or Less:

1. Find writing jobs that pay
2. Hire people in other countries write for you
3. Make sure you are paying them less than the job
4. Run articles through a plagiarism software
5. Repeat with about 3-4 writers
6. Make sure they send you invoices before you pay them, otherwise you can get in trouble with the IRS.

There ya go. That's the book. Decent advice, but I won't be pursuing this.

Engaging and informitive

Looking forward to implementing these ideas. Common sense step by step guidance any newbie can appreciate. More experienced writers can learn as well with service prompts that are sure to increase client engagement. Definitely worth the read. Thank you.

Not What I Had Expected

It’s definitely building a writing EMPIRE, but not quite how I would like to do it. Good writer, but the content wasn’t what I expected. I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone who wants to do the writing work themselves.

‘When we dream big and set our sights on the big goal, we are better able to reach it.’

Sam Kerns is a handsome serial entrepreneur who has spent the past 20 years writing about small business issues, opportunities: he loves teaching people how to work for themselves and pursue their own dreams. He is proving this in his publications HOW TO WORK FROM HOME (in which this is Book 2 – HOW TO BUILD A WRITING EMPIRE IN 30 DAYS OR LESS) in what has become a very popular ongoing series, so successful is he in communicating his experience and ideas.

He opens his book by sharing his personal experiences: ‘Our culture teaches us that if we work hard enough and have at least some talent, we can become a success and accomplish our dreams. I’m not necessarily disagreeing with that. In fact, I wholeheartedly believe in the American Dream. But what I am saying is that the freelance writing business isn’t like most other career choices, and the uniqueness of the profession requires you to think a little outside of the box if you want to make a real living from it. Take me as an example. I’ve considered myself a writer my entire life. When I was 10 years old, I knew that writing was the career— the only career— that I wanted. I took the first step when I reached my early twenties— after suffering miserably in an office environment for a few years— and sent queries to magazines and book publishers. (This was before it was possible to act as your own Indie publisher.) I was lucky because unlike many of my peers, I didn’t seem to have any trouble landing assignments, and I was even given a book contract with a publisher in my second year. But there was a problem. Despite my early success, I was nowhere near making what I needed to in order to earn a full-time living. I began to wonder what was wrong. I was working 50 to 60 hours a week, and even if I’d been able to secure more writing assignments, I wouldn’t have had time to complete them. So instead of pursuing my writing dreams, I began to open other businesses, and while I achieved success with them, I couldn’t let go of my desire to work as a writer. There had to be a way, the entrepreneur side of me said, but for the life of me, I couldn’t figure it out. Something certainly wasn’t adding up.’

Now that we feel we know Sam we are ready for his facts and ideas about working from home. These he lists in categories: Why Being a Good Writer Just Isn’t Enough Any More, You are the Ruler. What Kind of Empire do You Want to Build?, Under Construction. What You’ll Need to Build Your Empire, Establish Your Empire’s Identity, Putting up Road Signs and Getting the Word out About Your Empire, Empire Basics— What to Write and How to Do It, Launch Your Empire: YOU are the Foundation, Expanding Your Empire: Making Your First Hire, and Don’t Stop! Take Your Empire to the Next Level.

It is this kind of down to earth, well-considered, tried and true assistance (and inspiration!) that Sam offers. Entertaining to read, full of smart ideas and stimuli, Sam Kearns is a guy you want to read and follow.

Good information - well laid out.

I liked the format of this book. It was well thought out and detailed. There were some areas that I already knew well, but it was great for the very new to business reader.

Not very encouraging...

I just find it hard to believe that someone would build their "empire" on the backs of the very writers working in content mills making $10 an article...

Couldn't finish this one as it ending-up being about a different aspect of writing than what I want to focus on. Did find it worth finishing because it wasn't the information I was looking for.
