It's OK. It's entertaining. Quite well written. It's just incredibly derivative. That said, I enjoyed it in the same way I would enjoy watching reruns of Burn Notice.

Burned A Magic Bullet Novel, Book 1
By: A. Blythe
Narrated by: Carly Robins
I wish this showed what all she could do before or after clearing up the murder mix up. She has to solve the murders as a human. She has to rely on others to help out. I was a bit disappointed at first but as the book continued I started liking it more. There is some interesting aspects to this world and the fantasy therein. Interesting plot. The main character is not a person I came to really love but more tolerated. The narration was good. Would I listen to it again if I knew what I know now? Yes, it is worth a listen. It is enjoyable but be patient in the beginning.

I love urban fantasy, and love reading about all kinds of supernatural beings. Somehow, I had never read a book involving a djinni before. Alyse is a djinni, and her powers end up "suspended" by a pair of magic cuffs. I really liked the characters in this book, especially Alyse. I love a super strong, sassy, and smartass main character. The author did a great job with the world building. There were other supernatural creatures in the story, and they were all described very well also. Alyse finds herself in the middle of a string of strange murders involving some of those creatures. I would describe this book as an urban fantasy mystery story. The narrator of the audiobook was Carly Robbins. She was fabulous as Alyse, and was absolutely perfect with the smartass attitude! I definitely recommend the audiobook version for anyone interested in the story. I really enjoyed this first book of the series, and I hope the next audiobook is released very soon!

Copper bracelets? Seriously? Copper is a soft metal. You could go right out to a hardware store and get a power tool that could cut them off and unlike a human she could heal right back up afterward. This set-up is massively derivative to the point of fanfiction and the heroine's approach to just about everything is poorly thought out. She's no Michael Weston.

I did enjoy this and I will read the next book, however, there were definitely a few things that annoyed me that were mostly due to credibility or a common sense viewpoint that seemed to escape the purview of literary privilege.

Alyse is (or was) an intelligence/secret agent with loads of experience and at the top of her game. Keeping this in mind she embarks on an investigation of her own incredibly carelessly. For example, she tells everyone, regardless of their potentially hostile and dangerous position, what she is all about. Even with her generous amount of experience she jumps into death defying situations with no backup, little protection and no knowledge or background on what she's about to get into. Displays of a stellar policing? I think not. It sticks out like a sore thumb reducing an otherwise good book edging toward pulp fiction.

Nonetheless, the characters backup characters are good, there's an excellent dose of fun,, and the plot although predictable in spots is good reading.

At first I was excited by a paranormal series that didn't revolve around vampires and werewolves.

The excitement didn't last long. It was a struggle to finish this and I really only did it to see if Winters would get out of trouble - spoilers - not in this book she doesn't.

There are too many inconsistencies within Winters character by the end for me to ignore.

Winters is a Djinni and a powerful one at that. She is a undercover/secret agent working for a group called The Shadow Elite which was somehow frowned apon by her Djinni family although we never get many answers as to why. The opening scenes see Winters trying to close a sting operation, it goes badly and she wakes up in her home town, shackled, which forces her to remain in her human form without powers.

Winters doesn't believe this was an accident and thinks she was getting too close to uncovering some powerful secrets - again no real answers come from this book. But with no magic and no resources she is forced to reconnect with her old Djinni friends, who it appears she all but neglected when she joined The Shadow Elite.

The rest of the book is Winters running around Philadelphia looking for the real person who cuffed her. The plot that follows is chaotic and most of the time leads no-where. Winters is accused of killing a bunch of 1/2 angel warriors despite the fact she has no powers, then she is recruited by a mob boss to track some weird heirloom - spoiler you never find out the significance of the heirloom she just ends up returning it at the end of the book - she pisses off both her friends who had moved on with their lives after she left town but still tried to help her when she shows up unexpectedly.

The book ends with Winters in pretty much the same place it started. She is still cuffed so no magic, but oh that is solved by the mob boss rewarding her with a personal mage. Winters came across as the dumbest undercover secret agent and honestly I was left thinking no wonder The Shadow Elite kicked your arse to the curb.

I won't continue this series. It was a let down when it could have been a great influence in the genre.

It was a fun, intriguing mystery that I enjoyed reading. I liked the magical world that was created and I'm definitely interested to know more. There were twists and turns I didn't see coming which made the book all that more enjoyable. The characters were unique and entertaining. I can't wait to learn more about them.
I look forward to reading the next book.

Alyse Winters is a powerful djinn and a globe-trotting agent. But then she is cuffed and cut off from her powers and is dumped back in her hometown of Philadelphia. With no money or resources, Alyce must rely on the few friends that will still talk to her. Stuck in her human form, she must try to find out who burned her and why before her enemies find out she is powerless. She also has gotten entangled in a murder investigation of supernatural creatures. She needs to clear her name of that as well.

Alyse is an interesting character but she has problems. Being trapped as a human helps to make her vulnerable instead of an all powerful being that can magic her way out of any situation. The copper cuffs needed more explanation. Obviously, they must have some magical protection to keep them from simply being cut off but it is never really said. A rather gruesome solution was suggested by one bad guy. He said he would cut her hands off to keep the cuffs as souvenirs. It made me wonder if since djinn can shapechange and have incredible healing powers, why Alyce didn't cut off her hands (get her powers back) and heal/shapechange back to a form with hands. Gruesome but it should work.

Alyse kept complaining about being stuck in human form to the point it became tiresome. Strangely wnough, even though Alyse still had a few djinn friends, none of them seemed willing to use their powers to help her.

Obviously, Alyse needed limitations so the books would have suspense and not just be a magical Jane Bond running around. But, truthfully, these limitations seem silly or unbelievable when you stop and think about them.

Still, the story was solid and fun to read. It reminded me of the TV show burned with a supernatural twist. It could have been a worse start.

Alyse is a djinni, attached to a special supernatural team hunting those who misuse their power. When a case goes wrong, Alyse wakes up in her hometown of Philadelphia, with copper bracelets on, which eliminate her powers. Trapped in her human form, Alyse, with the aid of her friends, must discover who has done this to her. In the meantime, she gets sucked into a murder mystery; who is killing. the Nephilim and magicians in Philadelphia?
.
Annabel Chase has created a fantastic new world, one in which humans, genies, angels and magicians all co-exist. The characters are brought to life in Chase's writing, and the storyline is riveting. This is sure to be one series I will be enjoying for a long time to come.

My name is Alyse Winters. I used to be a powerful djinni until…
“We’ve got a burn notice on you – you’re blacklisted.”
When you’re burned, you’ve got nothing. No cash, no credit, no job history. You’re stuck in whatever city they decide to dump you in.
“Where am I?”
“Philadelphia”.
You do whatever work comes your way. You rely on anyone who’s still talking to you. A sleazy ex-boyfriend. A friend who runs a sex-shop/illegal weapons depot. Bottom line? Until you figure out who burned you… You’re not going anywhere.

DNF @ 20%.

This was surprisingly bad. I don't think this was a good partnership for Annabel Chase, or maybe she just edited it--I don't know.

The main character was pretty unlikeable. She was snotty in her thoughts, tried to be snarky but it was unfunny and unclever, and she was pretty stupid. She would think of the most obvious things to try that would clearly fail and then fail.

The dialogue, which Chase usually makes snappy and funny, was extremely boring.

Characters react in peculiar ways--she's discovered at a crime scene, decides to shoot and stab at the one who finds her, and this person just... lets her go? Because that's not suspicious behavior at all. She says something presumably meant to be snarky but gross to a yoga instructor (but still as unfunny as the rest of the dialogue), and this is apparently immediate grounds for ejection and people trying to trip her as she passes? Lol? What is this?

I tried to persevere as the premise was interesting and I quite like this author, but this really does not read like anything she wrote at all.

If you have ever watched and loved Burn Notice, imagine it with djinn (i.e., shifter equivalent), witches, and nephilim involved. I was amazed at how well the fantasy blended into the concept. Alyse, a djinn who is used to being the top agent, gets "burned," loses her powers and bank account, and is dumped back at her home town, the most likely place for her enemies to find her.

Alyse is a smart alec, and her interactions with her friends make me wonder why they don't kick her out as well. I can see why she got burned. The action, the character interactions, are all on the money, and I loved the story. Except....

I love a strong element of romance. You won't find any here. The main naphil, Captain SavesTheDay Reeve, could be hot. But I don't see sparks yet. I hope later novels develop this as a subtheme.

Unfortunately I am OCD and must finish this series. Better than Vanilla and Venom series, but barely. Djin, mages and nephilim in one book makes even a fantasy series hard to swallow. Unless you are a red fox in this series.

Burned is a fun story about a djinni secret agent who gets a "burn notice" and is unceremoniously dumped in Philadelphia with a pair of copper cuffs that block all of her magical powers.

Although the book is well written, my main complaint with it is right there in the logline. She's a magical creature trapped in a non-magical human form. You know what we call that? We call that a person. This is, essentially, a book about a human who used to have powers and doesn't anymore.

For a powerful djinni, this should have been a huge deal, like a regular person losing a favorite body part. It should have been the emotional core of the book. But rather than giving us a reason to really connect with the struggle and care about the protagonist's plight, we're mostly just given constant reminders of the problem. It feels more like an annoying inconvenience than a life-changing event.

The book is heavily peppered with passages along the lines of, "I'd fly right up there and look in that window if I had my powers. But I don't, you see, because of these cuffs. But if I did I'd shapeshift and kick some butt. Which I can't do because I'm stuck in this dumb human form. Let's revisit this in a page or two."

That said, the book strikes a pretty good balance of telling its own story while setting up the larger world of the series. There are at least three distinct mysteries happening simultaneously, and two of them find a resolution by the end of the book. (Though, to be absolutely honest, I had a hunch who was behind the crimes pretty much the first time the person was introduced.)

This is the first time I've read an Urban Fantasy of the "glowing girl on the cover" genre. I enjoyed it enough to explore more of these.

Enjoyable quick read made possible by my reading all the reviews and knowing what to expect. 1) readers do not learn who burned Alyse. That seems to be the overall series plot line. 2) this novel has a complete plot line in that the murder mystery is solved and Alyse finds a way to support herself.

The characters are realistic in their personalities, nothing too extreme, pretty balanced. There is actually some growth there. The dialogue is quite funny sometimes and i laughed out loud while reading several times. No romance to speak of, but there seems to be a possibility for future novels. Love that aspect of the novel. I’m tired of the “girl needs a guy to be happy” theme. I much prefer the “woman kicking butt and taking names” theme. In terms of Alyse’s spy skills, do not expect serious treatment of this character trait. She seems to have no plan of attack or investigative procedure. She didn’t even make a list of suspects for the scian theft so she could systematically exclude people. Readers do not get the inner thoughts behind her actions. Since i had read a review critical of this aspect, i knew what to expect and so was not disappointed.

There were a few places where the editor was asleep- extra words in a sentence as if it had been reworked and the extraneous words weren’t deleted - but overall the editing was good.

I was concerned when i reached the halfway point in the novel that there wouldn’t be any closure or that there would ve a ridiculous cliffhanger. I’m happy to report that was not the case. At the midpoint is where things started to turn. and since I liked the characters and the magical world, i will definitely read the next novel.

This was an ok read for me. While I found the premise of the book intriguing the delivery and content were mediocre. I'm a huge fan of the tv show Burn Notice and this was one of the reason why I picked this book up. I was expecting Michael Westen kind challenging assignments but, it just wasn't there.

I really liked that Alyse is a djinni. I haven't read anything with djinn story line before so this was good that way. The story is about Alyse, who is a powerful djinni and is part of a covert group that handles difficult assignment. This CIA agent for Supernatural - that's the closest I can think of. She's highly trained and considers herself one of the best. One day her routine assignment goes wrong and she finds herself burned and magically cuffed in her hometown. Alyse is stuck in her human body with a huge disadvantage - she cannot use powers and has to learn to use her human body for everything which she is out of practice. She is broke and powerless.

As the story progresses, Alyse finds herself connected to a series of supernatural murders in the city and thus ends up being on the radar of a Nephilim Capt. Reed. Another complication she didn't need in her already complicated life. So begins her quest to solve who the murderer is, why they are killing and as well finding out who burned her.

The book was somewhat entertaining cuz it was pretty fast paced. It sucked that we didn't get to see much of Alyse's so called super powers. The entire book we're told how powerful she is or was. Also, some of the other characters just came across as flat. I couldn't care for them much.

For example, the Prince, we had Alyse's word that he was an ass. However, we never got to know why. Similarly, Reed and Flynn, just came across as so-so. Actually, I didn't care for Flynn much.

This book was interesting enough to read. It just did not wow me.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

Accidentally deleted from 'all' shelves when I meant to remove from just one! -- Thankfully I had the original shelf open in another window, and it was just one page that I was able to grab a screenshot of, so I can re-add all 17 books.
I don't store reviews, so I have clue what else I added beyond the star rating, sorry! :(

I'll try to recall to add my thoughts, again, when I do a re-read.

First time read the author's work?: No (think I read her work as Annabel Chase first before realising the same person)

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Alyse Wynters is a djinn who works as a covert operative until she receives a burn notices, losing access to her powers due to some unsightly handcuffs, no money and no designer clothes. What's a girl to do? She tries to fly under the radar and gets in contact with some of her old friends in Philly without the Prince of the djinn discovering she is in town. Of course that's easier said than done and very quickly, Alyse finds herself in the middle of a serial killer investigation and on the radar of one fine Nephalim investigators, Detective Reed.

It seems that troubles just seems to hunt Alyse down. She soon visits her flaky ex boyfriend, Flynn and his yoga teaching girlfriend. However, if she is going to surviving enough to find out who is behind the burn notice she will have to find a paying job and avoid any more murder scenes. Well, the job isn't a problem once she connects with a crime boss looking to retrieve a family heirloom but avoiding murder scenes is easier said than done.

I really enjoyed "Burned" as well as the writing style of A. Blithe. I found I was quickly immersed in the story as well as the lives of the characters. This series has the potential to become a favorite and I can't wait to see where the new book in this series takes me. Yes, the theory for this read is similar in concept to the T.V show, Burn Notice but just because you read Dracula doesn't mean you will need ever read another vampire novel! Give it a try, you won't regret it!

I really enjoyed this new-to-me series from Annabel Chase, Burned. Think of Michael Westen from “Burn Notice,” but featuring a female with a supernatural slant.

Alyse is a djinn special agent working for PAN, the Paranormal Agency Network, a worldwide intelligence agency. She is suddenly “burned” after a job gone wrong, and is dropped off in her hometown of Philadelphia. She needs to figure out what happened, but that is made more difficult due to her bank accounts being drained and her powers being cuffed—meaning that her djinn powers are blocked and she’s forced to live as a human while performing her investigation.

The good news is that she still has friends in her hometown—Farah, her best friend and owner of an adult entertainment store; Mix, another good friend who is skilled in technology; and ex-boyfriend, Flynn, who has his ears to the ground on the unsavory part of town. She also makes some new acquaintances, and even helps with a local murder investigation, as well as picking up a side job for income.

All in all, it’s a fast-paced, fun mess she’s in. I’m looking forward to the next one!

I discovered this through Instafreebie, so had no real expectations of what to expect. I was really pleased to find that this was a brilliant book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this even though it was a quick read. It was fun, and fast paced with lots of action. I thought that it was very well written. It has a good story line that's not overly complicated, but is just enough to keep you interested and entertained. This was coupled with great descriptions that allow you to create a clear image of this world and it's goings on in your head and therefore completely immerse yourself in the book.

This good writing carried through into the engaging characters. I loved the mix of the different types of supernatural and human, as well as how they all clearly had very different personalities. There was great chemistry and relationships between the characters and they all played off each other really well. The dialogue also added another level of dimension. The different types of characters had varying speech patterns and used different phasing, this really helped create a sense of individuality. I also enjoyed how the wit and humour was woven into the narrative as well as the speech; it made everything feel cohesive and carried you through the story.

I would totally recommend this book to anyone that loves a humorous, fast paced read with a supernatural element thrown in. I will certainly be getting the next one!

The writing is workable but the entirety of the book hinges on what feels like a plot sketch the author penciled together and then didn't really think through very hard. "What if an enormously powerful djinn lost her powers?" Okay. But if everything centers on all parties involved being too dull to think through the problem then it goes from an intriguing device to a persistent annoyance.

Characters stumble from plot-necessary encounter to encounter with little to no rationale, shoe-horned along, which causes them to feel stupid and unbelievable as they're acting not as people would act but as the plot sketch dictates they need to act to keep things moving. No emotional resonance.

I finished the book at the end out of pure cussedness when the "we're wrapping things up" just got too painful to handle. None of the end made any actual sense for how any of the characters had comported themselves to that point and the BBEG's plan only "worked" because the main character kept thinking: "Oh no, that would totally work! I would know, I am from here and yup, that would totally work!"; absolutely none of it had been established previously in the fiction.

Alyse Winters is an extremely powerful djinni covert agent for the Shadow Elite when she is ambushed, made powerless by copper bracelets and dumped in her hometown of Philadelphia. She’s been burned by the company she worked for. All of her powers and money are gone.
With no idea what happened and all of her contact numbers now out of order, Alyse is forced to rely on old friends. Farah, her best friend, now runs a sex shop and is a secret weapons seller.
With help from Farah, their techy friend Mix she sets out to find out what is happening. What she finds instead is a dead body of a Nephilim, as well as Captain Reed, who is in charge of the Nephilim.
Unfortunately, this is not the only dead body she comes in contact with, it happens enough that she is a person of interest. Add to that another gun runner who wants her to locate a missing dagger.
This book has a fair amount of action, great characters, a mystery, and humour. Between Farah, who has never seen a good-looking man she doesn’t want to sleep with (explains why she runs a sex shop), the ex-boyfriend that Alyse asks to help with her non magical fighting skills, and numerous others, this is a great read.
