"October 26, 1892. This has been the happiest night of my life. My debut ball. Never, never--not if I live to be a hundred and one years old--shall I forget it. And only this morning I thought the whole affair would be a dreary farce. Tonight Harry asked me to be his wife. ... But eve in the midst of this mad rush of happiness, my heart aches at the idea of hurting Paul."(p.36)

Harry? Paul? Maggie Duncan won't be marrying either one of them, and she won't be living in San Francisco in the manner to which she had become accustomed in her 19 years. Her life will be more different than she ever could have imagined, thanks to someone she hasn't even met yet, and won't for almost another month. Once she does meet him, it doesn't take them long to fall in love, and then it doesn't take her long to decide that wherever he belongs, wherever he is happiest, that's just where she belongs. No matter what she has to get used to or give up. None of that is as important as true love. Right?

"Wherever goes, he makes his own world. Why can't I do that? Why do I feel I'm only living half a life?" Maggie asks herself on page 111. Then to her husband she admits she misses San Francisco and her best friend...."Then other times--like tonight--I know our life together is as good as life comes. It's what I want--at least YOU are what I want--all I want." Far from home distance-wise, and feeling like she's traveled back in time a fair bit, but....

How has Maggie gotten to this point, and where does her life go from there? "Quien sabe?" Meeting MAGGIE might be one of the best times of your life, one you may not forget if you live to be 101....or else you'll be glad enough that you read it and you won't forget it for a while. I think I first learned of it in my textbook from my college course in young-adult literature, and I'm glad I decided to look for it.

Thanks for reading. Buenas noches!

Maggie was a socialite in 1892 San Francisco society. She thought she was in love with Harry, a soldier, but then was swept off her feet by an Englishman named Nick, whom she married. Nick ran a gold mine in the Mexican wilderness and soon Maggie was dealing with very different problems that her upbringing had not prepared her to cope with.

This was a brutally honest story about dirt-poor Mexicans and life in that hot humid country for an American bride.
