राबर्ट वाइज द्वारा निर्देशित, आर्थर लोरेंटज द्वारा लिखित, जेरोम डी. रॉबिन्स द्वारा नृत्य-संयोजित, नियोनिद बोर्नस्टीन द्वारा संगीत और स्टीवन सोंघीम द्वारा लिखे गए गीतों से सुसज्जित फिल्म 'वेस्ट साइड स्टोरी' सिर्फ अपने दस ओस्कर अवार्ड्स की भीड़ की वजह से ही प्रसिद्द नहीं है, बल्कि विलियम शेक्सपियर के 'रोमियो एंड जूलियट' से प्रेरित यह ब्राडवे म्यूजिकल क्लास्सिक कई मायनों में दुनिया के आधुनिक थिएटर इतिहास में मील का पत्थर मानी जाती है 'एक्ट-वन' ने अपना अगला नाटक चुन लिया था जिसे नाटक से अधिक दुस्साहस कहना उचित होगा 'वेस्ट साइड स्टोरी' का नया नामकरण हुआ...'जब शहर हमारा सोता है' जातक पढ़ा गया फिल्म देखी गई और गदगद होने की प्रक्रिया से उबरने के बाद सर्वसम्मति से फैसला हुआ कि अब इस स्क्रिप्ट को एक तरफ रख दिया जाए हमारी स्क्रिप्ट हमारी होगी जिसमे हमारे चरित्र होने, हमारी सिचुएशंस होंगी, हमारे दृश्य होंगे, हमारे गीत और संगीत के साथ हमारा अपना हिंदुस्तान होगा नाटक समसामयिक और पूर्णतया प्रासंगिक होगा और उसको लिखते वक्त हमारी नजर में हमारे दर्शक होंगे देश में उन वक्त सम्प्रदायवाद ने खोलती हुई धूनी रमाई हुई थी बाबरी मस्जिद पर पहली चढ़ाई हो चुकी थी आज से चार सौ साल पहले ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के आगमन के परिणामों को भोगता हुआ हमारा खूबसूरत मुल्क 1947 और 1984 को छूता हुआ आज जब गोधरा से एक कदम आगे जाने की छटपटाहत से गुजर रहा है, तो 'शहर....' के जिन्दा होने का अहसास पहले से भी ज्यादा मुखर और प्रखर हो जाता है

शेक्सपियर के रोमियो-जूलिएट से प्रेरित नाटक 'वेस्ट साइड स्टोरी' को पढ़ दिल्ली के कुछ मतवाले कलाकारों को ऐसा ही कुछ भारतीय परिवेश में करने की सूझी। उसका परिणाम है पियूष मिश्रा द्वारा लिखित 'जब शहर हमारा सोता है' । देश के बटवारें के काफी समय बाद जब अगली पीढ़ी जवान होती है, तब उनके दिल में भरे ज़हर और ज़िन्दगी की कश्मकश को उजागर करता हुआ यह नाटक युवा जोश और भटकी मानसिकता को दिखाता है, और किस तरह से प्रेम नए खून की सोच को शिथिलता देता है।
नाटक का परिवेश एवं भाषा काफी वास्तविक है एवं कुछ संवाद बेहद संजीदा। संगीतमय नाटक होने के कारणवश काफी प्रभाव गीतों की भाषा एवं उसके संगीत से होता है। इसी कारणवश पढ़ते हुए थोड़ा प्रभाव कम है। मगर एक बेहद रोचक कहानी और सटीक भाषा इसको काफी दिलचस्प बनाती है। पियूष मिश्रा के फ़िल्मी गीत-संगीत को सुन उम्मीद की जा सकती है की यह नाटक स्टेज पर काफी शानदार रहता होगा।

A play which, in the foreground, has a gangwar of a Hindu gang and a Muslim gang. The play revolves around those gangs and their leaders, their relationships and their love. It's a dark but engaging play which touches on the communalistic colours of today's society. Written in the backdrop of a time which was particularly communally hostile in India (given the Babri Masjid incident), it still seems relevant. A good quick read.

The context of this book is one of the saddest and controversial eras for India as a country. He has beautifully engraved a love story in the middle of the chaos that engulfed the society then. I think the power of the novel is in the closing scene and the strong message it delivers.
The song "Ghar" has so much more meaning when you hear it after reading this novel.
A must read for a leisurely weekend. Will open your mind and heart to emotions that we typically keep closed in the core of our hearts.

This ebook edition is defective in some parts. More than 6 pages are there probably in pdf format - and it jarred the flow in reading. That's why I have deducted 1 star. Otherwise, it's a good musical play and there is lot a good team can do with this script.

This was the first Hindi play I read in its entirety and at no point could the genius Piyush Mishra disappoint me. The plot of partition acted as an excellent analogue to the originally American play. The dialogues and short songs were beautifully done, with the vocabulary and dialect reflecting those of the characters.
