Vincent, Survivor

Vincent Li always assumed he’d die in Oakwood. If the local gangs didn’t get him, then cigarettes and alcohol eventually would.

Now, he’s pretty sure minotaurs will kill him instead, and if not them, the ghouls dragging people into the dark will.

In the wake of an unexplained spike in homicides, a masked figure opens portals to another world—a world filled with dangerous magic and mythological monsters. Creatures that shouldn’t exist suddenly do, and they don’t mix well with humans. My love for fantasy started with a series about mice that killed each other using swords and bows.

It's all been downhill ever since.

Vincent, Survivor is an interesting read that mixes urban fantasy and apocalyptic elements. I was generously provided a paperback copy by Mr. O.L. Eggert himself in exchange of a review and I would like to express my many thanks for his kind gesture.

I thought the premise of the story is unique while the writing pretty strong and accurate. I just felt like the main characters, save for Granny, could use more development and deeper characterizations. What I felt for these characters reminded me of how I feel for movies that have a strong plot but with actors that have below average acting skills. Sorry if that sounded rude but I honestly think the story would have been more relatable had there been better characterizations as well as smoother transitions.

Nonetheless, it was an overall entertaining read and the author has a lot of potential in becoming a great writer especially in the said genres.

This novel was provided free of charge by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Imaginative, exciting and a definite page turner.

Right from the beginning I became invested in the main characters. Their back story was realistic, well written and presented in a rapid, well-integrated way as to not slow down the pace of the main plot. Vincent is a great character. He's flawed in so many ways but so very real and believable. He behaves exactly as someone with his background would and I loved it. He's constantly forced by those around him to do things against his own nature, forced to become the reluctant hero. It's very cleverly written!

The excitement begins as soon as you start reading the first page and does not stop until you close the book. Even though it's part of a series the book is rewarding in and of itself. There is a very satisfying climax and a great lead in t0 the next book in the series. There are plenty of great twists and turns and some definite "oh shit" moments. There are great moments that make you laugh and others that might make you cry. Definitely one of the better first books I've ever read.

Looking forward to book two!!!!

I received a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Vincent keeps to himself and visits the woman who raised him named Grandma whenever he can. When he reunites with his brother Dante who is released from jail after hanging out with the wrong crowd, he doesn't believe that he can change. Strange things start to happen when minotaurs from Greek mythology and other demonic creatures begin to wreak havoc in Oakwood. Can Vincent and his family stop the creatures before it is too late and can they survive their apocalyptic new world? Read on and find out for yourself.

This was a pretty good read. I enjoyed this action-packed paranormal fantasy story. If you enjoy fantasy stories, definitely check this book out. It is available wherever ebooks are sold.

Vincent is NOT your stereotypical, alpha survivor with amazing skills, he is one of the millions of regular people in bad circumstances in the world who does little to help remove himself from those circumstances. Sure, he tries to keep his head down and go unnoticed in the bad neighborhood he lives in, that and Grandma, the coarse shop owner is pretty much all that keeps him from being mugged, or worse. Then it happened, his reality, as bleak as it was shattered the day the minotaurs invaded and started their mass slaughter of humanity.

Yes, I said minotaurs, nasty beasts with a thirst for death who came through a portal from another dimension, but how? Not creepy enough? How about ghouls, the flesh-eating kind? The only good thing to come through this tear in the fabric of dimensions is a wizard named Flea, who just happens to look like a chubby, pug-faced dog with the best dialogue ever!

Follow Vincent, Flea, and his merry band of misfits as they struggle to stay one step ahead of death in a world gone mad, battling the bad guys, from all directions while still making time to have comedic moments and to find out that one of their group is the only one who can save the world. Definitely a scary thought!

Vincent, Survivor is NOT your typical apocalyptic read! Author O.L. Eggert is here to entertain, to provide an escape form the world and he does it with humor, heart and his own quirky style of creating a world that is at once terrifying, and deadly. His heroes are far from the norm, they are a ragtag group of misfits who complement each other perfectly. I felt tension, I laughed, I felt sad, I was shocked, and I was definitely on board for this one! Take a trip with Vincent, Flea, Grandma and the rest, trust me, you are in for a surprise!

#DNF

Well I had to DNF Vincent, Survivor. I really struggled with the decision to DNF this book. I don't like to DNF books, but we all know it's necessary sometimes. I had a harder time doing that with this one because it started off really strong for me.
#StartedOffStrong

So why did I DNF? What happened? I lost interest. Plain and simple. I'm not even sure why really. One thing I can think of that I could say about it, is that the writing is a bit bland. I wanted a little bit of flair. Other than that I just don't know.
#NoFlair

I have to say I was really intrigued by the minotaurs. That's pretty unusual in an urban fantasy book and I really liked that. Maybe some of the reason I lost interest despite a good start is because I didn't connect to Vincent. I liked Vincent, but he was a bit dull. Grandma is a really interesting character though!
#GoGrandmaGo

Overall, Vincent, Survivor is not a bad book. I just didn't connect with it like I was hoping to and I just couldn't finish it. I think there are some unique and interesting things going on here, but I just lost interest unfortunately. This book just isn't for me I guess.
#NotBadButNoConnection

I can't personally recommend Vincent, Survivor, but I think if you are an urban fantasy fan there is no harm in giving it a try! It's worth a shot.

*I received a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Vincent, Survivor follows Vincent Li as he navigates his life in Oakwood, trying to avoid the local gangs that are out to get him.

But then everyday life starts to go awry. People are dying, getting kidnapped, and going missing - and Vincent starts to think that maybe something's not quite right. When creatures that had previously existed only in fantasy and mythology begin cropping up, the world turns into a deadly battlefield. With the few allies he has, Vincent must learn how to not only find safety, but also put a stop to the portals that are being opened between earth and the magical world.

But of course, in a world where people are fighting to stay alive, who can you trust?

First of all, I think the cover is amazing. Such beautiful artwork, and it's really unique - but I do think it fits the story very well.

The plot of this story was definitely very engaging; there were numerous twists and turns that left me shocked.

I also really like the premise of this book; it was also developed in a really clear way. We saw events from Vincent's perspective as everything around him fell into chaos.

There was a sort of surreal transition from realism to urban fantasy. Although I knew it was coming (because of the synopsis), I still thoroughly enjoyed Vincent's journey as he gradually learned more about the magical world that was seeping into his reality.

I felt like the writing style of the book could be described as straightforward.

The descriptions were relatively direct and easy to understand. For people who enjoy more flowery language, deep symbolism, or heartwrenching quotes, the writing may come across as too straightforward or simple. I would honestly say that I am one of those people who have a weakness for beautiful quotes and tearjerking writing. and for me, while the story was solid and the writing was clear, it didn't quite blow me away - and hence, four stars. (However, this is dependent on personal preference, so this writing style could definitely be right up your alley.)

On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the sassy and hilarious dialogue, especially by Flea, the magical talking dog wizard.

How could you not love that little fella?
"I will not parade myself around naked with my privates flopping about," Flea shrilled.

That line actually made me laugh out loud. Bottom line is, I love Flea. He's adorable.

Now, in terms of the main character, Vincent was definitely not your typical hero. He was brave and risky, but he was also tough and angry and realistic - and that, I think, is where the author really succeeded in making an original character.

There were other supporting characters as well, and they were definitely all well developed and portrayed. Another positive of this was that the author established a powerful balance between the personalities of the characters. As the focus of the story, they definitely complemented each other very well, and the characters worked well simply as characters as well, whether it was as allies or as enemies.

Overall, I would say that this was a very enjoyable read! It was definitely a unique story and I will never forget such unique characters. (Especially Flea!)

I received a free e-copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review and I’m happy to say that yes I sincerely loved the book.

“Vincent, survivor” is a real gem of paranormal thriller. The action starts from chapter one and the pace never slows down, in fact even during the rare moments where you get to catch your breath you can still feel the tension in the air, you already know that something’s potentially bad is going to happen soon enough.

The plot was good and kept you turning the pages as fast as possible, there were shocking twists at the end of the book that left my poor jaw hanging. I really had not seen them coming.

The characters were well defined, with a main character that I’d define “prickly” but – in the end – like Elise you end up liking him just fine. Not that the secondary characters were less likeable, especially Flea—I really wanted to adopt him ha ha. The bad guys were as bad and twisted as you they could get. I won’t give anything way but---oh well, it was so easy to totally hate them.
The author’s style was great, sleek but detailed giving you clear and vivid images, very film-like. Be warned: there is a fair amount of swearing in this book, violence and gory descriptions.
However, it didn’t really disturb me (And if you’re fan of Games of Thrones or The Walking Dead you’ll do just fine!) as I see it as part of the world building. Besides, “Vincent, survivor” gets some extra points in my eyes for not giving me any unnecessary romance and for not sugarcoating the harsh reality described in the book. I really appreciated the attitude “I don’t take shit from anyone” that seems to permeate the whole book.

Last but no least, I found the book’s paranormal twist very original. Seriously, an apocalypse-like catastrophe brought on humans by minotaurs? A wizard pug-dog (and so cute at that!)? I really wasn’t expecting any of that (not from this book) and I was pleasantly surprised. So---what are you waiting for? Go and get the book, you won’t be disappointed!

+Received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

I had been thinking about getting into urban fantasy lately so when the opportunity arrived I couldn't resist it and I actually liked this book so yas! I'll read more urban fantasy in the future.

THE WORLD: It takes place in Oakwood (US) where the world was all normal until The Catastrophe happened, the day mystical creatures (like centaurs, sorceresses, minotaurs, etc) took over the world and starting killing humans.

CHARACTERS: The main character is Vincent Li, and he's an actual arse. Well, he can be. I tell you he's the type of boy you wouldn't want to be near around. He's problematic but he also has some good qualities for survival and he actually cares more for people than he would admit. At first I didn't like him much but the more I read the more I appreciated him... weird. Then, we have Vincent's brother, Dante, who was just like Vincent but his experience in jail changed him a bit –or so we'd like to think. My favorite character was the woman who took care of Vincent and Dante as kids, Grandma (she likes to be called like that). She is so cool and very interesting! I'm sad I didn't get enough of her story. Actually a lot of background is missing but I guess it will be revealed in the next books since this one is only the first. Another character is Elise, who is Grandma's granddaughter and she doesn't do much. I wasn't a big fan of her. Moreover, we have a peculiar character called Flea, he's a wizard (yeah fine) but he's a talking dog wizard (what?)! He's the smartest of all to be honest but he cannot help much because his powers don't work in this world.
Together, they have to unravel the plot behind all the creatures being able to access our world via the Gates and to find who is behind all this mess.

LOVE: There is no romance in the book. It's all about survival.

PLUS: The action and the pace! The book starts right away with action and fights which I immediately liked. It's very easy to read and the language simple.

I also enjoyed all the creatures and the fantasy elements added to the story. And overall the characters were okay.

MINUS: I'm new to this genre so I cannot really compare this book to any others of the same kind... I might be wrong or it might be a characteristic of the genre but I felt like sometimes I could completely detach from the characters without losing anything. Deaths could happen and I couldn't bring myself to care enough. Maybe it's the downside to all the action happening.

OVERALL: 4 stars. I know it took me very long to read but it wasn't because I was not enjoying it! I had exams and then I went to a ballet intensive so I couldn't read much (if at all) but now I am more free, my apologies. I'm glad I started this new genre for me with this book.

—P.S. I Love That Book!

I’d like to start with a thank you to the author. O.L. Eggert contacted me about his debut novel, which he described as (and I quote) “an urban fantasy with a dark, apocalyptic twist”. After reading the synopsis, I decided it seemed like a thoroughly interesting read. Being a lover of such things, and having a soft spot for review requests, I said yes.

I’ll admit to having a bit of an up and down with the story. There were times when the book was great, and yet at the same time I wasn’t as engaged with it as I had hoped to be. In short, it wasn’t quite what I had hoped it would be. It was a great debut novel, but at the same time I was left wanting a little bit more.

The story itself is great fun. It’s exactly as described by the author: urban fantasy with an apocalyptic twist. In a few ways, though, it reminded me of The Walking Dead. I know, I know, they’re two completely different things. O.L. Eggert gives us a wonderful twist to the usual urban fantasy. Nine times out of ten, the urban fantasy novels I stumble across contain the same supernatural creatures – vampires and werewolves – yet this one gives us something new. In fact, this one gave me something I have not seen before: we have minotaurs. Whilst this isn’t the first time they’ve been used, it was the first time I read about them without a direct link back to Greek mythology. They come from an entirely separate world, a creation of the author. They’re not the only creature, though. We have an entire cast outside of the norm, saving us from the repetition that we so often find in the supernatural elements of urban fantasy novels.

Nevertheless, as I said, I did feel the occasional The Walking Dead déjà vu. It was probably just me, though, as I’m sure many will see my links as being… well, tenuous at best. It merely felt that way to me, and distracted somewhat. It was the whole untrustworthiness of safe havens that did it for me. There were other aspects as well, that gave a slight The Walking Dead feeling, but that was the biggest aspect. It’s not as though such a thing is limited solely to The Walking Dead, as it’s been done in many novels, but with the whole apocalyptic twist such is where my mind went.

Although, that wasn’t the only aspect of the story that has been done before. There were a few ‘twists’ that I saw coming. I’m not going to go into detail, but I saw quite a few of the things before they came to be. Things were made far too obvious, in that regard. It was fun, yet I couldn’t help but feel annoyed at how the characters were overlooking what was so obvious.

Despite this, I did have fun.

Whilst the characters fell flat at time, some did stand out. Grandma, in particular, was a massive love for me. I imagined her to be the grandmother from Mulan. That is, of course, were Mulan not a Disney movie. Grandma let out far too man f-bombs to ever get a role in a Disney movie. Still, she was such a great character to read. If nothing else, she is someone to aspire to be like in old age. Being old and miserable is overrated, this woman grabs life by the most sensitive part of the anatomy and squeezes. Yeah, as you can tell, I enjoyed her character.

There is also potential for where the story will go in the future. I’m not quite sure what to expect next, but there are so many ways in which the story could go and it would be interesting to see what the author decides to do. Whilst I’m not going to go out of my way to read the second book, I am interested enough to give it consideration. Hell, there have been many situations whereby the first in a series hasn’t pulled me in as far as I’d expected only for the second book to win me over. Such is my hope with this.

Overall, it was a fun read. I’d like to once again thank the author for allowing me to give this one a read – much appreciated!

Thank you to the author for supplying his book in an exchange for an honest review.

I didn't hate the book, but I didn't enjoy it either. It was too jumpy, too much going on and a lot of conversation that simply had nothing to do with the plot line whatsoever. The plot line was forgotten then remembered then forgotten again in favour of silly family feuds that were unnecessary. The characters weren't well-rounded, I didn't believe in them and felt a lot of them were crude and cruel just because. Vincent was not a good protagonist, there was nothing to him to make him stand out from the rest of the characters, he was boring, crude and forgettable. The premise was such a good one, it could have been done so well and really explored the themes of courage, mythology and the end of the world as we know it in great detail but unfortunately it fell short for me.

I was provided a free copy in exchange for an honest review. And honestly, I read it in a day and a half because I couldn't stop. The world was unique; Vincent, Flea and Grandma were worth the price of admission; and the plot was easily discerned but the outcome was unexpected. Reminded me of Supernatural and Aisling Grey in turns. I'm in love with Flea, he's freaking adorable. I hope the next book answers the unanswered questions.

I was given an e-copy of Vincent, Survivor: An Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy Thriller (Vincent Series Book 1) by O. L. Eggert for review.

Vincent, Survivor... was right up my escapist, apocalyptic alley; a group of average people trying to survive an extinction level event. This extinction level event is very different from the norm. No plague, no evil corporations, not even any zombies (by the accepted definition anyways). Not really a spoiler; we are under attack by mythical beings.

There are many twists and turns in this story. The question is: Who can you trust when the excrement hits the oscillating appliance? Almost no one it would appear. Our hero, Vincent, is basically a jerk (insert a stronger adjective here if you wish, you won't be wrong) and unlike other such stories, he does not really overcome this negative aspect of his personality throughout the book. I personally did not think it was part of his rough, anti-establishment charm, he was just a jerk.

Vincent, Survivor... author O. L. Eggert keeps the action level high, the story doesn't lag at all. The twists add a touch of mystery for the reader to try and figure out.

The negative you may be asking yourself at this point? The language. The use of F-bombs (or derivatives thereof) do not particularly bother me, the overuse of them does. It just isn't necessary to the story. I'm not saying erase them all, they did set a tone and develop some of the characters, but excessive use doesn't help the flow.

As the full title tells us, Vincent, Survivor... is the first installment in the Vincent Series. It is a good start to a continuing story, and language aside, I am interested in reading more. Who knows? Maybe Vincent will mellow out over successive entries (but I kind of doubt it).

Graphic violence, minimal sex (talk mostly), mythic beings (good and bad), love and loss, and a mostly angry hero make up a very entertaining read. O. L. Eggert has started a good series with Vincent, Survivor: An Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy Thriller. Enjoy!

Great story! I had a really good time reading this one. Post apocalyptic plus fantasy makes for an exciting fantastical fun read, I loved every minute of it.

Vincent's home town is turning into a ghost town. Murder rates have doubled and missing persons cases have tripled, but no one can seem to figure out what's going on. Vincent's neighbor is acting strangely, and when Vincent and his brother Dante witness him being kidnapped they call 911 and get an automated message telling them to try again later. They run to their car and follow him through town and into a warehouse where they witness a portal to another world being opened and mind blowing magical creatures spilling through.

These creatures begin filling the streets and killing anyone in their path. This is where the adventure/survival of the fittest begins. Minotaurs are destroying every human they see and ghouls are eating the bodies through the night.

Vincent and his group, which consists of his recently released from prison brother Dante, a foul mouthed tough as nails old lady called Grandma, Grandma's granddaughter Elise, and a wizard pug named Flea, are trying to make it across town to a possible safe haven.

There is plenty of action, mystery, suspense, scavenging for survival, bad guys, twists, magic, and laughs, lots of laughs.

I'm excited for book two, I can't wait to continue the story. I received this book free from the author but I'm not obligated to write a positive review, just an honest one.

5/5 for a truly engaging story, and for multifaceted characters that shine from start to finish.

Vincent Survivor is a tale of complexity that transcends genre conventions and enters into an entirely new demesne of storytelling.

Where this book shines the most is in its characters and their interactions with each other and external forces. These characters are no shining examples of the traditional hero, but rather real, gritty people with as many layers as an onion. There is no bowing to the protagonist, but rather continuous inspiring realness that is evident from the beginning to the end of the story.

Vincent Survivor is a tale that clashes the real with the unreal. A world thought completely separate and unaffected by the supernatural is suddenly thrust into a magical apocalypse and expected to survive in extreme situations henceforth considered incredulous and fictitious.

There’s no doubt in my mind that this book will see large acclaim in the marketplace, whether that’s in a niche market or on a large scale. The author writes in such a way to truly engage the reader, with incredible skill for description and creating multifaceted characters.

Take my word for it, you will not regret giving this book a chance, not in the slightest.

Full of fun, this wacky dystopian novel pulled me in from the first page. Vincent and his older brother Dante practically grew up on the streets. With all the violence, disappearances, and his brother getting locked up in jail, Vincent assumed that his city Oakwood would kill him eventually. But that's where he's wrong. Evil forces have come into the world through magic portals and he has to dodge minotaurs and ghouls. He wishes he had to worry about gang violence, because this is too weird even for him! All he has is his smart ass mouth, a pistol packing elder by the name of grandma, a talking pug that is supposedly the greatest wizard ever, his brother, and the cute girl next door. Together they must try to escape the city to get to a sanctuary they heard about on the radio or risk getting torn to bits. Full of adventure, ridiculousness, sarcastic comebacks, and general badassery; this book will appeal to readers of comedic fantasy, Christopher Moore and Douglas Adams. Lots of fun and a great debut by O.L. Eggert. The books ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so get ready for the next book; this is the first in a series!

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review, so here it is....

I thought that this book was incredible! It kept my attention fully focused on it, I devoured this book within a day, the definition of a page turner. Straight away I was captured by the main character (Vincent) as their back story was realistic and kept the book on a fast pace. The author describes the character so well that it does feel like you are reading about a real person, you uncover his flaws which makes the character have depth too him and makes him even more realistic.
The book is full of twists and turns that keep the reader on their toes. This is the first book of the series and after reading this one it makes you want to read the next book and follow Vincent in his life and see where it takes him next. The book is packed with Greek mythology and demons, this is the perfect book for fans of fantasy/paranormal stories. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!!

I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Eggert creates a world that sucks you in within the first few chapters, creating a fantastical story with out of this world creatures that would be ridiculous in a lot of cases but not in this. I mean, portals where mythical creatures come through and destroy life on earth along with a talking pug of a wizard? It should be silly but it's definitely not.

I had to admit, I was scared half the time. Those minotaurs were terrifying and the ghouls even more so. I had to put the book down and do something else every couple chapters because I kept imagining these things running down my street.

I found the book to be well written and fast paced that I read this in just over a day. I'm impressed, so much so, that I can't wait for the sequel!

If you like fantasy, definitely check this one out.

Review: 4 Stars

Vincent, Survivor is a bit different than some of the typical YA I've been reading as of late and if I'm honest part of what drew me to it. It's real and gritty. It's the end of the world and there is lots of swearing and some bad decisions. Vincent is a regular guy working in a gang infested home of Oakwood where he always figured he'd end up dying be it from gangs or his vices of smoking and booze. Never did he think creatures from another world like minotaur's or ghouls and the like would make the list. Still as the world goes to hell and back as a mysterious figure opens a portal to another world Vincent must face more than he ever expected. Vincent is a survivor and he will do whatever he has to in order to make it.

The circumstances Vincent and those he is with are faced with and the decisions that have to be made seem like real conversations I'd have. Saving people and playing hero is well and good but so is not risking your life for strangers on a whim but being practical. When everything you know about life goes out the window and you're forced to create a new resting point for "normal" you learn things about yourself and what one can learn to adapt to. That's what kept me in the story as much as the supernatural elements wondering what could be happening next. The idea that it was about a normal person, not some chosen one or someone destined to be a hero just a normal guy. As strange as it sounds it seemed normal in his voice.

The story moved along quickly making a fast read. The only down side to that for me were a few instanced of injury that were very serious but then later at an unspecified amount of time later it wasn't as big of an issue. This didn't deflect my enjoyment at all I still very much enjoyed the read but just in a few moments did get pulled out of it long enough to check and see if I had missed something.

So Vincent is real. Some of our other characters had their own great aspects. I adored Flea. He was so fun to read about all of his scenes he stole them. His personality was so strong but then when you have the mental image as well it just took the show. Grandma was a hoot. I mean she's not like my grandmas that's for sure but I have known some people in my life that I feel could be her and some parts to aspire to be. Elise, like Vincent for me, was real in that she really struggled with the whole right and wrong morality of the new world understanding the logistics that the world has changed into a darker version of itself and really accepting it.

Because let's face it there is some seriously dark stuff happening. Not only from the creatures that have taken over which seem bad enough but then factoring the rest of the human population and if they are a good hearted band of survivors like yourself or a demented band of psychos. Again the idea that the story pulls in both aspects of the supernatural threat but doesn't ignore that another world might not be the only threats. Still as dark as the book seems in parts there is still that hope. You have to have something to keep pushing you to survive the world after all.

Overall I enjoyed the book and I'm happy to have read it and look forward to following into the next book as it wrapped up some aspects but still have a lot of ground to cover and questions left to answer. Plus I have some suspicions about a few things and I'm curious to see if I'm right or way off base. Vincent, Survivor was a book that did manage to surprise me at times that is for sure. I saw a few larger things coming but was kept on guard most of the time which is always fun.

I was blown away by this new fantasy novel, which exceeded all of my expectations. I read the whole thing almost non-stop in two days, constantly intrigued by the creatures and motives for the monster invasion. The story is told from the perspective of Vincent (duh), which I really enjoyed. He’s such a flawed character but that actually works in his favor. It makes him more real, and unlike other books where the hero ends up being a super trained navy seal with ultra strength, this guy was more down to earth. That’s not a knock on him either. The end of the world can’t be scary if there’s no threat to the main characters! Speaking of main characters, the supporting cast was some of the best I’ve ever seen. Everyone had such distinct back stories and by the end of the book I could tell you exactly who was talking just based on their dialogue. The characters are realistic in their actions and motivations, and even though there are clearly good and bad guys in this story, the author explores the moral gray areas between them. PS there’s a wizard pug like some of the other reviewers have mentioned—he’s legit.

This book blurs the line between young adult to new adult; there’s definitely cross-over appeal and I think if you read exclusively in either age group you’d still be able to enjoy this book. There’s cursing, but no worse than other young adult books these days. Apparently this is a self-published book, too, but I never would have guessed. Not a single editing error and the cover is gorgeous, if not better than what I see some traditional publishers pushing out.

The only negative about the whole book is that this is the first in a series, and the others aren’t out yet! Not to worry, though, O.L. Eggert leaves a lot of hints and mysteries for you to chew on in the meantime.

Overall I ADORED this book, more than any I've read in years, and can't wait for the next in the series. I’ll be recommending this to all my friends and family. I don’t want to be the only one suffering while I wait for book 2 to come out.

*I received a copy of this book for an honest review*

Okay, I gotta be honest. When I started out, I was thinking more like 3 stars. It felt a tad bit....well, corny. A wizard pug? But, I kept reading, and kept getting sucked in deeper and deeper, and suddenly, that wizard felt like he'd be weird and cheesy if he were anything else.

I really liked how there were flashbacks sprinkled here and there, showing Vincent's development, how things came to be as they are, in a way I've never read before! Very unique.

I loved the characters, and though I somewhat figured out why one was special and different from the rest, I was still on edge and wondering exactly what was going to happen, and ended up thrown off of the ending. Which, by the way, made me pretty sad. So, you've been warned haha.

So, if you like fantasy, creatures, monsters, and action, I would definitely recommend this book.

One last note: I wanna be Grandma when I grow up!

Bob says: 4.5 Platypires!

1st quarter of the book was fantasy and gore, scary and thrilling. The rest of the book was rather boring until the last 15 or so pages. Capped off by the fact this author gave up on the story and trashed the follow up. Stick to the guns man. Finish what you start. I would have continued.

I mean the Minotaurs and Ghouls are freaking cool in this book. So powerful and scary. And then they are just gone and don’t come back in the book. I feel like they were the central antagonist and some sort of crazy fight or battle or miracle could have happened. I am just mad at this book. So much potential. Speed read the last 100 or so pages.. boooooooring

Fantastic

I give this book two thumbs way, way, up. Vincent Li is the protagonist everyone can find a part of themselves in. He's witty, sarcastic, crude, angry, terrified and confused. Ultimately he's a man trying to survive and doing the best he can in a world that's gone crazy. This book has everything you might hope for and then some. Magic, minotaurs, a talking dog, love and heart break, not to mention twists and turns guaranteed to blindside you. Anyone after a gripping urban fantasy adventure, pick up this book. You won't regret it, I promise.

First, I got to thank O.L. Eggert for giving me the opportunity to read his book.

The characters are perfect, but the story is not. I really enjoyed the diversity of the characters and the humoristic content. But, it was a little too implausible for me to give it a 5 stars.

I have to say give it a chance and see.

This book was a fun, quick read. The concept of the story peeked my interest immediately. Filled with lots of the fantasy I love, with a post-apocalyptic twist. I would recommend this book to any young adult looking for their next read.
