More Than Words

Rate this book
When something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Or is it?

Alex is tired. Tired of being bullied, ignored, and tired of his dysfunctional parents. He cleans out his locker, so no one else has to do it for him once he’s gone. When his books are knocked out of his hands, however, it sets off a motion of events that makes him feel more alive than he ever has before.

Andreas is the best friend of one of Alex’s bullies, but he’s nothing like his friend. Andreas is kind and compassionate and charming—and he doesn’t seem to mind all of Alex’s scars. When it turns out Andreas is also bisexual, and interested in Alex, it all seems too good to be true.

Let's just list all the problems in order, shall we?

1. Alex gets bashed in the head with a pipe.

"'They'd had to shave some of my hair to get to the cut, but I should prize myself lucky. I could've got permanent brain damage if he'd hit me any harder, or just a fraction to either side.'"

"'I might have a concussion...'"

Despite that, he's released from the hospital the very next day.

2. Alex writes his attacker's motives off as the attacker simply not possessing a good sense of morals.

3. Alex credits Andreas with making his life worth living.

4. Unprotected sex. Which makes sense on Alex's part since he's suicidal, anyway, but Andreas is a fucking meathead.

"'You've used condoms with the other people you've been with?' 'Not every time, no.' He thought it over. 'No, not really at all. A couple times, but other than that...' He shrugged. 'Digging around for a condom - or having to ask for it - ruins the whole mood.'"

You know what else ruins the mood? Herpes, syphilis, and HIV.

"'I swear I'm clean. I've been tested and all, which is more than many people I know ever do.'"

That, right there? That's why condoms are so important.

5. "He was, by far, the kindest person I knew. Followed closely by his entire family. I had only known him for two months, but we had been sleeping together just as long."

What does sleeping together have to do with anything?

6. "He had not been advised to take antidepressants by his psychologist, but then, he was a more stable person than I'd ever been."

Stable? Depression is a disorder, and claiming someone is more stable merely because they don't require antidepressants is ignorant in the extreme.

7. "I didn't want the all-consuming feeling of wanting to die to come back. It was gone because of him, because he'd shown me kindness and comfort. And good sex."

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

8. The guy who bashed Alex isn't arrested.

"If I'd died, he might have got ramifications, but I was alive and well."

Really? It's called assault. Last time I checked, it's still a crime. And under these circumstances, it's a hate crime, which carries a stiffer penalty.

9. Repetition. We're told twice that Alex loves coming from anal penetration, and that dry-swallowing pills was never a talent he'd picked up. Good for him, I guess.

Needless to say, I think I'd rather get bashed in the head than read any more of T.T. Kove's work.

2.5 stars rounded up to 3 stars

More than Words wasn't a bad read at all, it just didn't live up to my expectations. During the whole first part of the story - it is actually divided it 5 parts - I was sooo sure that this would be a five star read.

Alex is growing up in a disfunctional and abusive family, his parents are always fighting and aren't able to take care of their son. He is ignored in school and is fighting a severe depression. He is about to give up, when suddenly meeting Andreas. Easy-going, concerned and interested in Alex, he is about to change Alex' life.

More than Words is a real roller-coaster ride. It has ups and downs, nothing is suddenly so very easy and this made the story very credible. Alex was fighting his depression during the whole book, Andreas made his life so much easier, but there were still these days when everything went and Alex kept hurting. The story ends with a note full of hope and I really liked it.

Unfortunately, the story was somehow too long - many aspects were very repetitive and I felt annoyed at times. Another aspect, that bothered me was the fact that we got the whole story out of Alex' POV. I had problems connecting with Andreas, I would have loved to read parts of the story from his POV. He somehow ended up one-dimensional and I didn't see much character development for most of the characters.

I liked the secondary characters - espacially Ben and Glenn, but I felt left hanging in the end considereng many questions I still had about them. I enjoyed that the author created stories for them, but it was disappointing to not know more about them in the end. Guess, I can only hope that there is another story planed. I would love to know more about Glenn, he was so intriguing and I keep wondering about his past.

I also liked that the story took place in Norway, which isn't all that usual in the m/m genre. I would have loved to get more information on the country ... it took me quite a while to figure out that it was even set in Norway!

All in all, More than Words was an entertaining read at parts, but it wasn't able to really get me hooked. 3 well-meant stars! I might still give the other parts of the series a chance!

This is the best book I've read all year !!!
I never would have thought TT Kove could have written a sequel that is just as good as the original but she has. Maybe even better!!!

There are people we meet in life that just spark with us and we know right away we want to be friends. That's exactly how I felt as soon as I read about Andreas and Alex. I fell in love with these two from page one!
If you haven't begun the series, do yourself a favor and read these books. You will love TT Kove's writing style.
I'm looking forward to the next great addition in the series.
Five well deserved stars!!!

This book doesn’t have much of a plot. And it doesn’t seem to be a romance either, more like a narration of a collection of semi-random events in Alex’s life from the moment he meets Andreas.

Alex is depressed and cuts himself to cope with the bullying at school and the oppressive atmosphere at home, where his parents fight and shout at each other all the time.
One day, while he’s in the process of emptying his locker at school intending to go home and kill himself, Andreas approaches him and invites him to his house.
They spend the weekend together, have sex, fall in love and suddenly Alex isn’t suicidal anymore, because Andreas has given him a reason to live and look forward to the future.

To be completely accurate, Alex recognizes that his mood’s improvement doesn’t mean that his depression has disappeared for good and eventually seeks professional help. He keeps repeating that he’s not suicidal anymore only because of Andreas, though, because Andreas loves him and thanks to him Alex now has friends and a home. And that’s all fine and good, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that, if they should happen to break up in the future, Alex would be right where he started or only slightly better.
Add to that the fact that Andreas is a rather one-dimensional character, whose only purpose in the story seems to be loving Alex and making him happy, and I couldn’t buy their relationship.

The writing was so dry and “clinical”, that I barely managed to empathize with Alex for all the terrible things that he had to endure.
And that takes me to another point: Alex says that Glenn, Andreas’s best friend, was one of the people that bullied him and made life horrible for him at school, but he keeps worrying about the two friends falling out because of him, when Glenn makes clear that he isn’t happy about Andreas and Alex being together.
I could have really done without reading about Alex worrying about the delicate feelings of the boy who bullied him for years. Really.

Just like I could have done without the conversation about condoms and unprotected sex. Apparently, Andreas feels like stopping in the middle of sex to look around for a condom is too much of an interruption and he prefers to go without to not ruin the mood.
But that’s okay, because he’s clean, he’s been tested, unlike many of other people he knows. Some of those “untested” people he had sex with, I suppose, since we’re told that he’s experienced with both girls and boys.
He enlightens Alex with this fantastic little piece of wisdom after they’ve had unprotected sex many times, without so much of a conversation about it before, to which Alex didn’t object because he was suicidal and didn’t care much. Andreas, though, was never suicidal and should have known better. Not that anything changed after Alex, supposedly, stopped being suicidal because of Andreas’s love.
Apparently Andreas’s miraculous love doesn’t include sparing himself and his boyfriend a potential STD.

I didn’t read the first book in this series and maybe that’s why I felt More Than Words to be utterly dry and dull.

The book is in first person from the POV of Alex, a depressed 18 year-old who self-mutilates, and when we meet him he’s packing up his locker in order to commit suicide at home. He’s stopped by Andreas and then all of sudden their having (unprotected?!) sex right off the bat and in a relationship.

From then on, I had a hard time figuring out the plot. Was there even one? It just felt like reading a depressed kid’s diary. Just summaries of different events that happened that are vaguely connected in a linear way. More telling than showing, and I found myself skimming a good portion of the story. I was bored, but kept reading hoping something mildly exciting was going to happen.

The book suffered a lot from only showcasing Alex’s point of view. I thought the characters were completely flat and one-dimensional. Andreas just seemed like Alex’s personal cheerleader instead of someone with ups and downs like any other person. Even Alex was a bland, forgettable character that not even showing him as being depressed and insecure could make him a likable person. Kove had all these characters in the book and didn’t do a thing with them to make them less than cardboard cutouts that talked.

Though I will say, the most interesting character that I needed to know more about was Glen. I hope that his story gets explored and he gets a happy ending. Maybe with Leo? And I hope he won’t end up in an unhealthy relationship with someone who requires him to be the sole emotional support in the relationship.

Sadly, the best thing about this book is the cover.

Loved this!

Heartbreaking first couple chapters; my heart broke for Alex. I can't imagine the life he lived and how horrible it had to have been for him to get to the point he was at. His parents were horrible and his siblings had left when they could, not wanting to be in such a terrible environment but it was sad that they left Alex to it. His parents were toxic and just didn't care about him at all.
Thankfully, Andreas befriended him and gave him a safe place to be. His family seemed amazing and supportive and I was lucky they'd all had each other.
I want to read more about them. Ben and Leo and Glenn especially!

I loved the way Andreas loved Alex, their connection felt real and he loved him unconditionally. It was sweet, I loved that Andreas' friends accepted Alex and was good to him, apart from Glenn that is, but he came around; and I really really want to read more about Ben. I think I'll just love him lol

I hated how this one just kind of cut off without much of a warning, it was just like... in the middle of something, I wasn't prepared for it... which I guess is pretty genius cuz now I"m going back to buy the second one if it's out.. which I'm really hoping it is!

Another part that made me mad/ broke my heart was that Marcus got away with the gay bashing... I hate that, that still happens and people still get away with it! What business is it of anyone else's.... drives me crazy!

Other than that, I loved this story and I can't wait to read more!

I'm disappointed in this book. I loved book 1 alot. I was happy to see some of the characters from the first book returned. I'm glad it's a series book, and I can't wait for Ben's book. I really enjoyed Andreas he had such a sunny disposition about life that I appreciated. I liked Alex, but he was my biggest problem with this book. I get wanting to live for someone. Someone to love you, and be kind to you. But forever is not guaranteed and somehow I wish the author would have made Alex his very on survivor in himself. I really wanted him to fight for himself. I wanted him to live for himself, instead of the clingy, enabling relationship he had with Andreas.

Alex had a very hard life. I despised his parents so much. I just couldn't believe we never got anything resolved from his father at-least. Gosh Thomas is the most amazing man ever! If I was not married, I wouldn't mind being married to him. He was super kind, loving, and genuinely cared about the wards in his care. I thought this family dynamic was awesome and I'm happy that Alex was able to see what it means to have a family. Thanks Leo for being an amazing older brother, even with his reservations of being back in town he wanted to be apart of Alex's life. I have no clue how they handle laws in Norway but Marcus would have been in prison if he was in the United States. I loathed him. I will continue reading the series. I really like the author's writing style.

*** thanks netgalley/publisher for providing me an arc ***

more than words was... yeah, like the name says - more than words! a beautiful love-story about a jung man, who has been dealt a shitty hand in life and who experiences love for the first time in his life with a guy, he'd never thought boyfriend-marterial. but that's just life - it happens when you least expect it. that's a message, this book says loud and clear.

the story has romance, angst, is honest and open about self-harm and depression and the bonus: it was VERY erotic! :-)

i can really recommend “more than words“ to everyone, who is open for m/m books with explicit sex-scenes and emotional depth. 5+ stars from me!!!

thanks, dear tt kove, for creating such a beautiful story! and maybe we'll learn more about glenn and/or ben in the future, i liked them both!!! ;-)

Before I started this book, I told myself: "Calm down. You KNOW there is no way you will love this one as much as you did he first one. Set your expectations low and it'll be fine." Imagine how pleased I was to discover that I DID love this one as much as More than Anything!

So, for folks that read the first one, here's what I think you may want to know:

1) This book is not as dark as the first one. Nothing compares to what Jørgen went through. There is still some dark stuff, but it feels almost light in comparison to the first book. Also, there is only one perspective in this book - Alex's.

2) This book has a LOT more sex than the first one. No slow-burn here! There's even some light kink!

3) You will get to see Jørgen again in this book, but not much and not with Geir. Honestly, this book could probably stand alone because there are no hints about stuff you learned in the past book.

4) This book ends before the first book did in the story timeline. So, you won't see further into the future or anything. In fact, the first book shows you some stuff you will probably be dying to see from Alex's perspective, but won't. (I was so disappointed that it wasn't longer! I wanted more!)

If you're cool with all those things, you are in for a treat. This author has a really interesting way of keeping tension throughout the story. I noticed it in the first book, too. Never knowing which hints were going to pan out and which weren't made for a lot of good tension and nail-biting as I read the story.

As I finished the book, I kept looking at the estimated time remaining and hoping it was wrong, because I didn't want the story to end when it did. I wanted it to at least end a the same point in time that the first story did. In fact, I may go back and pick up the first one to read the scene I was hoping for again, even though it isn't from Alex's perspective.

Also, I am DYING to read about what happens with Glenn. I really REALLY hope we get his story in book 3! And that there IS a book 3 for that matter!

So, once again, an excellent book from this author! Can't wait for more!

Everything felt so rushed...except the book. It kept going on and on and on. I remember thinking at 40% "is this ever going to end?" I really should learn how to DNF. It would save me a lot of time and painful reviews.

Seriously though, everything felt rushed. One minute Alex was so alone and the next he was basically living with Andreas. I guess I needed to know Alex a little more before jumping into the deep end with his issues. His cutting was there, but it was kind of glossed over, in my opinion. Maybe that's why I needed to hear more about him before things got bad? I wanted to see how he was before he met Andreas. I would have a better understanding of Alex. Even when he cut, I didn't FEEL it. It was like 'yeah, I cut and made a big mess on the floor, but I cleaned it up and now I'm ready to go.' Seriously? No, I need more than that. Alex, there's more to life than sex and living for a man. You need to find YOUR way for YOU! This was a HUGE issue for me in this story. Alex only wanted to live for Andreas and not for himself. What happens if they split? Then what? Will Alex go back to wanting to die?

Andreas? He pissed me off. The unprotected sex without consent REALLY bothered me, but Alex's lack of care about the situation made matters worse.
say what photo: tumblr_lno5werL8o1qhgnad.gif

Glenn? What the fuck was his issue?
I'm an asshole photo: asshole tumblr_m1voxy1D3n1r2yedv.gif

Leo: Glad you pulled your head out of your ass.

Ben: He was a little too verbal with his issues, too. I mean, laying it all out there to someone you just met? Seems kind of inappropriate and unbelievable.

I won't be continuing on in this series. This was just a huge reminder that I can't do YA/NA.

After book one I was expecting another pretty strong emotional tear jerker. Surprisingly this one was a much gentler read, but still with the emotional connection I like.

Alex was a real heart breaker. The loneliness he suffered and the cruelty made my heart break for him.

Andreas on the other hand was such a positive guy. He was so perfect for Alex. It was easy to see how these two fell in love.

I loved meeting up with everyone again. Especially Ben, I'm hoping we get his story soon.

Surprisingly I'm also interested in reading Glenns story. I think he is another character I could easily develop strong feelings for, despite his less than stellar introduction.

My only real niggle was probably the sex. At the start it fitted and was done well, but towards the end it seemed to be the same old sex for sex sake kinda filler.

Overall a much slower paced and gentler read than I was expecting but still a worthy read.

The insta-love-lust was even more rushed then I would expect. I mean to the point it felt really unrealistic. It started out well and I got emotionally attached. But at the same time the point of unreality in this was enough with the rush for intimacy turned me off. If this was a paranormal I could let it slide more; when it's contemporary I'm just more picky on insta lust. Especially when we are dealing with the theme that this story is in. So, because of this I had to only give it 2.5 stars.

This is going to be a DNF for me at 12%. I really wanted to like the story, I just couldn't. It's not a bad story, it just didn't grab me by the fourth chapter.
I felt for Alex at the start of course, he had a difficult life but things seemed to go so quickly from nothing to something, it needed to draw that point out further before even meeting Andreas.

The writing style wasn't one I preferred, it felt a bit too straight forward and it didn't immerse the reader in to the life of the MC.

More Than Words: By TT Kove

I loved this as I read Louder Than Words ❤️ first and had to find out the beginning. It was fun and gave me a better understanding of louder than words. Thanks for this great story, it is great that someone is game enough to write about these issues and problems to show that we are all entitled to love and happiness. Once again great looking forward to the rest of the storyline.

More than expected

Wasn't sure about this book at first. It felt a little off, but then I realized it was all the main character's perspective. He is a teen dealing with so much and at the end of his rope. One thing I really liked was how mental illness and therapy were a part of the story and treated fairly. Overall want to read the next book.

“... if you only knew, how easy it would be to show me how you feel. All you have to do is close your eyes and just reach out your hands and touch me. Hold me close don't ever let me go. More than words is all you have to do to make it real. Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me 'cause I'd already know...” ~ Extreme (More Than Words)

Alex, of 'More than Words' by TT Kove, is surprised when Andreas stops to help him but he is in desperate need of something positive to happen in his life. Alex has given up on ever being happy, but Andreas is determined to show him there is a lot left to live for.

Andreas has noticed Alex before and wanted to meet him, but hadn't gotten around to it for a number of reasons. Alex is an outcast, different, and gay. He's bullied and teased far too often. Alex seems totally defeated; Andreas senses he can't wait any longer. Alex needs help immediately. Andreas steps up to reassure and befriend him. Alex is stunned that one of the most popular boys in his school would even talk to him, much less offer his aid. Alex doesn't believe Andreas's kindness will last, but doesn't want to let the opportunity pass by. Slowly, but surely, Alex lets his guard down; trusting is very hard for him. Andreas is patient, accepting Alex as he is in spite of his low self-esteem and destructive behavior of cutting when the stress gets to be too much. Andreas tells Alex that although cutting is self-destructive, at least Alex found a way to cope with his difficulties and ease the pressure. They quickly become lovers, but it takes time for Alex to see Andreas is not using him and truly wants to be with him. Alex still worries about what others will think when they are seen together.

Alex is in awe of Andreas's untraditional but very close family, comprised of an uncle, cousins, and brothers instead of a mom, dad, and children. Alex can hardly believe how well they all get along. Alex prefers Andreas's family to his own, which isn't difficult to understand considering the way his father and mother fight all the time and hate each other. There's never a minute's peace at his house. They hardly acknowledge Alex exists. He's more of a bother than a son and his mother, especially, lets Alex know at every opportunity. Alex's last fight with his mother leaves him with bad scratches on his face. When he confesses the situation to Uncle Michael, he invites Alex to come live with them. When he and Andreas are in the midst of proclaiming their new status of boyfriends with a public kiss, tragedy strikes. Alex ends up in the hospital fighting for his life and Andreas knows, more than ever how much he loves Alex.

As in the first book in the series, there's a lot on anxiety and strife happening, but there is also a lot of love for Andreas and Alex and his family and friends. It was nice to see some of the previous characters and learn more about them. Book two is definitely my favorite. There's just as much tension, self-esteem problems, but enormous personal growth, especially for Alex. We should all be as lucky as Alex to have someone as kind, understanding, passionate, and loving as Andreas. Fans of the first book will probably enjoy the second even more. For readers new to the series, it's not entirely necessary to read book one first, but it will help you understand the second one better if you do. If you enjoy reading about angst, passionate lovemaking, forming a relationship, setting priorities, and a happy ending, you may like this book. Thanks, TT, for a great follow-up to the first book in the series. I'm hoping for more of Andreas and Alex's story in the future.

I really loved this story. It was about self discovery, learning to love yourself, finding your family and wraps up with a great romance.

Alex and Andreas are an awesome couple. I love how Andreas, right away, stands up for what he believes in. He is not afraid to take that stand and show everyone he means business. Alex, on the other hand took some getting used to. I had a slight issue with what he chose to live for - I felt he needed to do more self discovery rather than use Andreas as such a crutch, however, in the end, I did end up liking his view. It seemed he came around to understand that he had made it just as much as everyone around him had helped him. I also really liked how despite Alex's reservations about Andreas, he didn't immediately shut him down.

Then you have Leo, whom I really came to like - even if he somewhat abandoned Alex, Sarah, who was both feisty and loyal and even Glenn, who you can't help but feel sorry for.

Overall this was a great story about learning to love yourself, accepting yourself and learning what love really is.

I really hope that Glenn, Jorgen and Leo get stories too.

I enjoyed this book so much more than the first in the series. The writing was excellent and I loved Alex and Andreas. I immediately connected with them. The love between them was perfectly written. What Alex went through at home and how he was able to overcome that type of upbringing shows how strong he’s become.

I loved Thomas, how he opened his heart and home to anyone in need. To me the ending was kind of abrupt, even though the ending of book 1 went a little further. Hopefully there will be another book in this series.

I gave this book a 4.5 stars rating because (even though it was not the MC’s) I can’t stand cheating, even though I realize it happens in real life. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

I really liked this book.. I loved Andreas and Alex, they were so sweet together. I loved the way Andrea treated Alex, so protective and caring. From the beginning you could feel like they belonged together. The author pulled me in from the start of this book and I could not put it down. I know I felt like the first book in this series was a little to descriptive in parts. This one I did not feel that at all. I would definitely recommend this book. All together a very good book!

More Than Anything 2

Alex has had about all he can take. He doesn’t want to keep enduring one misery after another. All he has to do is clean out his locker, take his stuff home, and then he can bring it all to an end.
But then a random jerk crashes into him, sends his belongings scattering across the floor, and Alex is helped unexpectedly by Andreas. Unexpected because Andreas is friends with the school bullies, who are no small part of the misery that has driven Alex to the breaking point.
Andreas, however, seems nothing like his friends. He’s kind, doesn’t seem to mind all the things about Alex that drive so many others away. When he also turns out to be bisexual, it seems far too good to be true, and Alex is torn between trusting that good things can happen and the certainty it only exists to be torn away.

Summary:

Depression is a crippling disorder that impacts every aspect of an individuals life. Alex's parents were at best absent and worse abusive when they acknowledged his presence. Alex's decision to end his life was sad, but in some ways understandable when you consider how alone and isolated he felt. Andreas's offer to help Alex was a breath of fresh air into his life showing him that things could change. The past showed Andreas the signs when someone was about to give up, so when he saw them in Alex it gave him the strength to approach him. One act of kindness can is all it takes to effect change and it could change Alex and Andreas's lives forever. The in depth first person descriptions of how depression can lead to hurting ones self to release the feelings could help others know that they are not alone and there are other people who can understand what they are going through. It was inspiring how Alex understood and found help for his problems. But most important was his drive to get better could show others that there is help out their and people who will help them in their search for a better life.

I'm thrilled that Alex and Andreas finally get their story told in this sequel because they certainly piqued my curiosity in More Than Anything. Alex has felt invisible all his life and the first person to see him is Andreas, a guy who he would never have thought would have noticed someone like him. Cutting has always been Alex's coping mechanism, but being with Andreas makes him want to handle his anxiety differently. The story doesn't make everything seem simple or easily fixed, and I'm glad for that because then nothing is glossed over nor trivialized, making what Alex goes through come off as far more realistic and allows those who are going or have gone through the same thing to relate to Alex's story much easier.

I love how T.T. Kove is able to write these deep, thought-provoking stories of young men who would be considered broken or damaged but are still fixable with the help of love, hope, and persistence. The situations that the cast of characters find themselves in make you stop and think about what you would do in their shoes. While I would have wanted a bit more delving into Andreas's past, especially since his father did take his own life, I still enjoyed myself immensely. Will Ben's story be up next, whether with Tarjei or Nik, next or maybe Leo and Glenn? Of course, both stories and hopefully more are things I would seriously welcome because the series has memorable characters. I'm giving More Than Words five stars. ♥

After reading the book summary, one would think this book is probably filled with nonstop pain and sadness, but it's actually a book about changing your life and having a hope. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of angst, but there are also a lot of lighthearted and heartwarming moments that balance out the heavy subject matter.

I liked the main characters as well as the secondary characters. They were fleshed out and complex, and made me want to know more about them. I look forward to reading the sequel Louder Than Words and seeing how Alex and Andreas continue to build their lives together.
