Cast back into Purgatory at the worst possible time, Shepard is reunited with Horace, Matthew and Niki. Unfortunately for Shepard, there’s no rest for the wicked. Shepard must somehow find a way to return to Elysara and rescue his true love. The catch, she’s being held by an ancient enemy, bent on recreating the universe one soul at a time.
Enlisting the aid of his old friends and new acquaintances, Shepard must battle his way back to confront this very old, new enemy. But this powerful foe has enlisted some help of his own. Shepard and his friends will face their toughest challenges yet to find his lost love and thwart this sinister plan, before time runs out.
R.K. Gleason was born in Grand Island, Nebraska in 196-something. He grew up, and spent most of his adult life living in Seattle. In late 1999, he met the love of his life, left his home in Seattle and moved to Ohio. Currently, R.K. lives in Columbus, Ohio with his best friend, and gorgeous wife, Petra. They have four children, currently two grandchildren, and ABSOLTELY no pets.
While R.K. grew up with a naturally vivid imagination, although his friends might argue some of it was self-induced, he seldom put his thoughts to paper. At the age of forty-eight, after the inspiration came to him in a dream, he began his first novel. On that day, The Truth Death and The Michele Shepard Series came to life.
Death's Return is book 5 in The True Death series. I have to say I think this just might be my favourite book series ever. The story picks up where The Lonely Death ends. Shepard has been reunited with the gang but alarmingly Andrea has been left behind in the clutches of Eric who seems a little unstable. This story takes us on the crazy ride to get back into Elysara to save her.
There are a few welcome additions to the gang. Uriel, an enthusiastic, sword wielding Angel. Then there's Rusty, Shepard's psychotic cat, and the best of all is Bob who I fell in love with in the last book. Bob guides the gang, not so carefully, the long way round back into Elysara and they come across all sorts along the way.
It's action packed, gruesome, hilariously funny and totally unexpected. A great addition to the series. An ending I didn't expect and one I wasn't ready for. I think there is a lot more to come for Horace and I can't wait for that. I'm a huge fan of Shepard and Horace in fact I love the whole gang, even Rusty! A brilliant series I would recommend it to anyone.
A cool down period was required before reviewing this book. R.K. Gleason creates these wonderful characters that I love; they are funny and caring and sarcastic as hell and then he feeds them a shit sandwich. Shepard and his ragtag group of companions set off on a mission to rescue Andrea. Tackling grave and bizarre obstacles, they maintain their hilarity as they trudge thru this gruesome adventure. Pummeled by misfortune, I can't help but feel sympathy for this band of misfits but their charisma and determination keeps them moving forward and me turning the pages.
I think R.K. takes great pride in giving the finger to his readers' optimism. Mr. Gleason doesn't disappoint this time and takes what you hope will happen and says "Naw, not this time". As frustrating as this is, it's also what make this series so awesome and unique. If you don't mind a little (okay, a lot) of gore and find underdogs heroic and relatable, then you will love this book.
I love these books. These books are fast, smartly written and fucking fantastical. Meaning you have no clue where they are going and I enjoy that so much. I'm tired of predictable and I can say that these books are not predictable at all. They are witty and gross and funny and downright disturbing. I like everything about this book. The pace is so fast I missed these characters when I was done.
OH HELL!!! Here comes BOB!!! I can’t tell you which of this series is my favorite because they are all soooooo different but with the same flare for gore, sarcasm, wittiness, and a killer plot! Again, I feel a little more evil with each book I read from RK. Maybe I’m going to hell because I can not get enough of the twisted thoughts, bent sarcasm and the rollercoaster of gore. But it’s totally worth it! These are my people!
“Sowing the seeds of discontent, creating doubt, disarray and general mayhem.”
This sums up this story PERFECTLY!!!!
Ok enough with this. The story starts right where 4 leaves off. Shep returns but with quite a vengeance as he actually died in purgatory! WTH?! RIGHT?! But the kicker is that he found Andrea. He F’n found her! And now it is his mission to get her back. But when he found Andrea he met Bob. And get ready for Bob! He is one of my favorite characters in the story. Well, there is Rusty (the cat) too. And he is freaking hilarious!!!! If cats could talk, LOL! Shep is ready to form the escape plan for Andrea. He gets everyone on board and gets some major help from Bob. But Bob, he is super simple but not. I hope that makes sense because it makes perfect sense to me. The thing with Bob is that sometimes he acts a little too quick and doesn’t give or get the best direction. Because of this the crazy group travels to some outlandish new planes of existence. The story stays gory with all the sarcasm that we love but we do get to see some of the truer sides of Shep….and Andrea. “Every choice I’ve ever made was for me and me alone, to save my (behind) or get what I wanted. I’m a survivor, not a (f’n) hero.” Shep says this and I think this is true for a lot of people. And as with the rest of the True Death series, nothing is as it seems. When we finally get to Andrea is everything all rainbows and unicorns? You must read this to find out!!!!!!!
The thing about RK’s characters are that they are a lot like me in some way, shape or form. I CAN RELATE! I feel like I know them and I can’t wait to hate them, love them, and threaten some of their lives! I am looking forward to continuing this series. And if you haven’t read the beginning of the series yet….WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!!!!!
No rest for the wicked. Just when Shepard has found out who was behind all the disappearances and he finds Andrea alive (sort of), Jehna sends him back to Purgatory. Now Shepard and his friends, including Rusty go on a recuse mission to save Andrea. I hate all the female characters. I keep thinking that Horace and Shepard can do so much better, but I digress. The guys are just awesome. I was a little hesitant about Uriel, who is an angel, but he fits right in. Rusty scares me a little and I love cats. I'm glad my cats can't talk. You are in for a treat with this one. I nearly cried at the end. Can't wait to get started on the next book.
