This Little Golden Book peeks into Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures’ The Secret Life of Pets, a comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day. It’s perfect for boys and girls ages 2 to 5!
Dennis R. Shealy is the author of many children’s books, including the popular Little Golden Books I’m a Truck, I’m a T. Rex!, My Little Golden Book About Dinosaurs, My LIttle Golden Book About the Solar System, I’m a Bulldozer, and The Noisy Garage. He lives in New York City with his wife and son.
I have not seen the film of 'The Secret Life of Pets' so the characters in this book are new to me. And they are all quite quirky and have their own agendas when their owners are out. They all live in a building, a block of flats by the look of it, in New York City.
Max, the main protagonist, lives with his owner Katie. Max thinks she is the greatest and they have a love stronger than words. Katie collects shoes and when she goes to work Max sometimes sits in her walk-in wardrobe and plays with them. The only down side for Max is that Katie goes to work every day and he misses her so much. Fortunately it is not too bad for he has other friends n the building; they are all pets like he is.
And in 'Max and Friends' he tells us all about his pals. There is Gidget, his Pomeranian neighbour, who thinks that Max's life is very exciting, sitting waiting for Katie to return home. Chloe is a big grey cat who is mostly interested in food, Sweetpea a little bird who likes to play computer games while her owner is out, Mel is an angry looking pug who frightens the squirrels through the window to keep them away from his territory and Leonard, my favourite, a poodle who loves hard-rocking music and has a ball while his owner is out!
Buddy the dachshund has worked out his own method of working out the kinks in his back while his owner is out and Norman is a little guinea pig who regularly gets lost in the vents as he is trying to find his way home. And Pops is an old three-legged basset hound who has a wheel for his right hind leg but it doesn't stop him getting around. The good thing is that Pops' owner is nearly always out so the whole gang love hanging out at Pop's place.
When Katie comes home from work Max is all excited and on this occasion she is bringing him something … he is so excited … that is until he sees what it is!!
There are lovely illustrations by Craig Kellman that complement an entertaining view of life in a New York City apartment block … at least, life when the owners of the apartments are absent!
I read this to Julianna tonight. She likes the movie but did not really like the book because the main dog was happy and then said sad when his owner brought home another dog on last page.

Library book. Our kid LOVES the movie version of this. However, it's got some rude comedy in it he was picking up on so we've banned the move from our home - till he's a bit older. We found this book and it has none of the offensive stuff in it. While it was in our possession, he asked to read it every night. He recognized the characters and would talk about them along with us reading the story to him. It was short enough to not drive us crazy but the story itself was missing - this was more of a highlight of what each of the characters did all day. (The intro to the movie in book form.) Four stars because he loved it and but also because there was no real story here.
A story of what our pets do when we’re away from the house for school or work. Although they miss us very much when we’re away there are plenty of other pets in the apartment building or on the street that they can talk to and visit with. Find out how they manage to visit one another when the door to their house is closed and locked and see what they’re all up to.
I always get my little nephew the little golden book for a movie coming out and he went to see this movie and loved it...so he has to have the book too!
I had no idea Disney was still partnering with Little Golden Books, or that kids still read LGB. Anyways, interesting Powtoons-New Yorker style illustrations.
