Alexa O'Brien, Huntress #1-4

Alexa O'Brien Huntress Book 1-4

Rate this book
This box set includes the first four books in the Alexa O'Brien Huntress series.

Once Bitten (Book 1):

Alexa O'Brien has never been like other people. A hunter of supernatural rogues, she is a werewolf with unusual but extraordinary power. Power that draws her to Arys Knight, the mysterious vampire who awakens her dark side. What they create together is dangerous and binding, forcing her to question the source of her abilities. It threatens not only her remaining humanity, but her relationship with fellow werewolf, Shaz Richardson, as well.
When Alexa's womanizing former lover and the Alpha of her pack is framed for murder, he draws public attention that could earn him a death sentence unless she steps in to help him. Alexa would love to watch karma at work but as the body count rises, long buried secrets are exposed. She's forced to face the painful truth that not everyone is who she thinks they are.

The Wicked Kiss (Book 2):

Alexa O'Brien is a magnet for trouble. Due to the power she shares with bad ass vampire, Arys Knight, power hungry creatures are eager to get a taste of her. That includes Arys' sadistic sire, a vampire that sees her as a toy, perfect for his personal collection. If he doesn't kill her, she just might wish he had.

Alexa is in danger, something her wolf mate Shaz blames entirely on Arys. The tension runs high when an argument blows up into a full physical confrontation between the two men. Alexa learns there is one way to protect herself from those who see her as a walking, talking power trip. Now she is faced with her biggest decision yet.

But can the two men she loves put aside their differences when it matters most? Because this is one sacrifice that will forever alter her very mortality.

Only Vampires Cry Blood (Book 3):

Alexa O'Brien has more power than she can handle. A werewolf bound to a vampire by a force bigger than the both of them, Alexa is feeling lost. Desperation drives Alexa to make a deal with the one person who can guide her, a man she loathes, Harley Kayson. He just so happens to be the sire of her vampire lover, Arys Knight. To say Arys is pissed about this would be putting it lightly.

Conflict threatens to destroy what Alexa and Arys share. Due to their eternal bond, they can never truly walk free of each other. When Arys teams up with his sire to revisit their sordid past, the pain he and Alexa inflict on one another rises to a scathing boil. Alexa comes to realize that her only solution is to fulfill Arys' greatest wish and worst nightmare, regardless of the consequences.

Blonde & Blue (Book 4):

Bloodlust and power. Werewolf Alexa O'Brien is a slave to them both. As she falls deeper into the seductive embrace of blood and death, the dangerous desire is encouraged by a forbidden attraction.
While trying to run the problematic local vampire hotspot, The Wicked Kiss, Alexa learns that someone is seeking the killers of its former owner. One of those killers just happens to be her. For Alexa's vampire lover, Arys Knight, it takes a personal twist and soon becomes clear there's something he's not sharing. Something that could unlock the mystery of where their power comes from and why it is so deadly.

I am the author of the Alexa O’Brien Huntress and the Rebel Heart series. I write urban fantasy that is dark and gritty with a twist of romance and horror but which is ultimately about people in dark places discovering who they are and what they’re made of.

I’ve been writing since the age of 9 when I had a Christmas themed short story published in the local town paper. A lover of rock music, vampires and muscle cars, I’m a dreamer who always secretly wanted to be a rockstar.

I love to hear from readers so don’t hesitate to drop me a line.

Overall, I thought the first four books were well written, fast-paced, exiting reads. Perfect for a quick read/day at the beach type thing. One of the biggest downfalls to the book is the way Alexa (the main heroine) seems to bounce from lovers faster than most of us change underwear. At time it serves a purpose in elaborating the craziness of blending two monsters, light and dark, and life and death together into one being. However, most of the time it leaves the reader with a sense of whiplash as she seem to ping pong from every available bachelor in town and break neck speed.

While I have enjoyed reading the first 4 books, I find the writing to be a little juvenile sometimes. The author describes what everyone is wearing all the time. If the main character gets changed, she tells us what she is wearing. This information is never important to the story and she is pretty much always wearing black, so it gets repetitive. The main character is continually making her situation worse, she knows it, and doesn't try to be better.

What initially drew me into these books is the setting (Edmonton, AB). It is rare that a book/movie is set near me.

From my personal notes:
OK, so I have a history with this series. I attempted to read the first book once upon a time. I can't remember if it was in a collection or as a single title. Anyway, I didn't really like the writing style or the way the MC 'thought'. I didn't read past the first chapter. Then I came upon it at some other time, probably in a collection. This time I persevered and made it through the first book. It got more interesting as it went along. So when I noticed that I had the first four books of the series in a book bundle on my phone, I thought I'd give it another go. Read through the first book to refresh my memory. Read through the second book. Groaned a fair bit. Tried to read the third book and I just can't put up with this any more. No, no, no. The MC is headstrong and stupid and I just don't like her. And all the talk about power... It gets way too much. I'm not going to force myself to suffer through the rest of it.

Fellow Paranormal readers, this one will rock your socks.

Trina M. Lee's "Alexa O'Brien Huntress" series books 1-4 offer a thrilling foray into the supernatural world, where the protagonist, Alexa O'Brien, navigates her complex identity as a werewolf with extraordinary powers. The first book, "Once Bitten," sets the stage with Alexa's struggle to understand her abilities and the dangerous bond they forge with Arys Knight, a mysterious vampire. This bond not only awakens her dark side but also threatens her humanity and her relationship with her werewolf mate, Shaz Richardson. The narrative escalates in "The Wicked Kiss," where Alexa becomes a magnet for trouble, attracting creatures eager to exploit her power. The tension between her wolf mate Shaz and vampire Arys reaches a boiling point, leading to a physical confrontation that underscores the series' exploration of love, power, and protection. Alexa faces a critical decision that could forever alter her mortality, highlighting the series' dark and seductive tone.

In the third installment, "Only Vampires Cry Blood," Alexa's power becomes a burden. Her desperation leads her to make a deal with Harley Kayson, the sire of her vampire lover, which only fuels the conflict with Arys. The story delves into the pain inflicted by their eternal bond as Alexa realizes she must fulfill Ary's greatest wish and worst nightmare, regardless of the consequences. This installment deepens the series' themes of sacrifice and the complexities of eternal bonds. "Blonde & Blue," the fourth book, sees Alexa grappling with bloodlust and power. Her descent into the seductive embrace of blood and death is encouraged by a forbidden attraction, adding another layer to her already tumultuous existence. As she tries to manage the local vampire hotspot, The Wicked Kiss, Alexa discovers a plot seeking the killers of its former owner, further entangling her in the series' web of supernatural intrigue and danger.

Lee's "Alexa O'Brien Huntress" series captivates with its blend of action, romance, and paranormal politics, making it a standout in the urban fantasy genre. The first four books are a testament to Lee's ability to craft a world that is as enchanting as it is perilous, leaving readers eager for more.

Alexa O'Brien Huntress Series is a pretty entertaining, action-packed vampire urban fantasy romance. The storyline is engaging, suspenseful, and super-steamy, packed with mystery, drama, passion, twists, and turns. Trina M. Lee's incredible imagination and world-building captured and held my attention. I'll be honest, it took me a little bit to get into the first book, midway through Once Bitten, the story picks up. The cast is well-developed with fabulous and distinctive characteristics. Alex is a kick-ass heroine with a strong, independent personality and incredible abilities. Alexa and Ayrs have an extraordinary vampire bond, their connection is magnetic and intense. Together, they were scorching hot.

Stellar narration by Sarah Puckett. She is an amazing voice actor. She captured the nuances of the characters' personalities, the intensity of the scenes, bringing the book to life.

Love this crazy paranormal series

Okay I will explain why I didn't give these 4 books a 5 star first off. As adventurous as the book was I got bored a lot reading it. As far as the club The Kiss goes I found every time the characters in the book were at The Kiss the story just was boring. Now , as you can tell I'm not a writer. I thought about just being done with this series after the last book but decided to give one more book a shot. I loved the steamy sexy part and all the adventure the book has. It says how tough she is and some of the weakest foes she has a hard time with. I know that Alexa is new to these powers but she was suppose to be kick was before them. Anyways I would recommend reading it because hey it could just be me. Enjoy

I gotta say, this is one of the best world buildings I have ever saw. It's very well explained, interesting and not just info dump. I find that very difficult to achieve, so kudos to the author. Now, the romance aspect really lower the rating here. I didn't like the drama or the love triangles, nor the push and pulls. It was annoying to say the least. Good thing all the other aspects was so amazing that made me want to continue listening!

I don't even need to say the narration was spotless. Sarah Pucket is a great voice actor, you can feel the MCs emotions, their grief and their joy through her voice. I'm keen of female narrator when listening romances, but I love her voice and her narration that I pick up audiobooks solely because she narrated.

I got the set and read the first 3 books before I got bored.. Maybe I started that out wrong. The first 2 books were really good and fast paced. I really enjoyed them. But by the 3rd book there wasn't a lot of character growth.. You'd think with how fast the books are going you'd notice the MC evolving. She KNOWS she's power hungry and even has a witch friend that is offering different solutions to help her control her powers. But she never makes an effort to change what she doesn't seem to like about herself. It just got really frustrating to me.. Will probably pick the series back up once I've taken a breather.

Alright, since books 1-4 are lumped together in one package, I've decided to review each book as it comes up, posting the whole review when I'm finished. Got that? Good.

Book one is excellent. While it can be said that it is a little difficult to really love these characters, I feel as though they're more honest than a lot of fantasy people who populate this genre. There's not a wholly noble being amongst them. And that's what makes it interesting. When Alexa comes upon the vampire Arys- to whom she is strongly attracted- sucking the life out of a woman in an alley, she only looks on with interest and a little blood-lust of her own. Now that's different, and that's what made me sit up and take notice of these creatures. Alexa is a werewolf, a natural predator herself, so it creates a sympathetic dichotomy in her actions. She is refreshingly unjudgemental. It's nice to have a lead character who doesn't rail against the evils of taking a life to live. Arys isn't one to take a little sip and move on, although he does snack on the more unsavory elements of society- pediphiles and the like. He's just taking out the trash, so to speak. Alexa just waits around while he finishes gnawing on the woman's neck, then takes a hand-in-hand stroll. It's almost romantic and stuff.

There are some very interesting and frankly shocking twists to the story. I was pleased to actually be surprised by the ending. I'm very very seldom surprised. Usually these books all go the same way. The good guys win, the bad guys die, all is well with the world. Things are definitely not well in Alexa land.

I refuse to sit and list the entire plot of a book. That's what the informational blurbs are that Goodreads provide. Read them for yourself. I'm just here to tell you my personal take on what's going on, on how the characters progress. And I'm here to tell you, they are surprising. I don't know what the next books entail. From some of the reviews, Lee falls into some of the same traps that other authors fall into- the tendency to repeat certain words (OMG, you could make a drinking game out of how often she uses "orbs" to refer to eyes. Get a thesaurus. Use it.), and her overuse of commas drives me batshit crazy. However, at this point I'm willing to overlook these little pecadillos for the sake of an excellent plot of intriguing characters. I'm reading the second one right now, and it's as good as the first, barring her overuse of "orbs" and commas. I think I'll take a break from the last two books and read another author before coming back to clear my head of those issues. Sometimes reading a single author for a number of books brings up the repetition problem. But so far, so good!

Wicked Kiss-----

Excellent read. There are a couple of characters that would be nice to see more of, then again, things might get a little crowded.
Not sure of the publication dates, but parts of this read much like Lexi Blake's Thief series. That's not a problem per se, just an observation.
Lexi is trying to deal with her increasing powers, a threatening vampire sire, and juggling two lovers...what's a girl to do? Well, combine them of course.
--------------------------------------
Only Vampires Cry Blood:

Okay, this is where Lee has started to lose the plot, so to speak. Rather than further her storyline or develop her characters, she instead rehashes old themes. Her main characters fall into the same ruts that every other writer of this genre does, losing their freshness and originality. There is no real story arc to the book- it seems to be prologue, about three pages of "climax", then about 8 chapters of epilogue. Seriously. Just chapter after chapter of after-game replays and plot add-ons.
There are also some serious flaws in her plots. Alexa, Jez and Kale (you named your character after a lettuce?) work for a company that are basically killers for hire. There is no indication that there is some internal governance paying for their services, they simply have clients who hire them to take out whatever werewolf/vampire they don't happen to like. Apparently it pays well. And it seems that none of our characters have issues with eliminating other beings just because someone signs a check. At the same time, Lee seems to want us to see the gang as a bunch of fearless vampire/werewolf slayers who are doing a great community service, just going around slaying willy-nilly.

There are a number of plot points that are never addressed: what is the nature of Lexi's power? How did she acquire these powers? Did her employer know of her potential before she became a werewolf? It is implied that he directed her turning into a lycanthrope, but apparently this doesn't bother Alexa. I'm thinking this would piss me off. At the very least, I'd be curious.
Alexa never seems to mourn her dead family. They seem to have been mentioned only as a means to an end. I find this troubling.
From book one to book three, a character goes from murdering sociopath to polite houseguest, who was justified in her killing spree because she had her feelings hurt. Buh?

There's one more book in this set, but I don't think I'm going to bother with it. What started out as a nifty new series (albeit a clone of Kate Daniels/Anita Blake/Theif series), has sadly fallen into a mess. Sad indeed. Maybe the author can re-edit these books, do some re-writing, and create something special.

Good...Until It Wasn’t...

Book 1 & 2 were amazing! I loved this group together. Then Harley came into the mix and suddenly Alexa is a raging idiot. I’m all for strong women, but the constant chip on her shoulder and raging “you don’t control me” was tedious. She also became incredibly unlikeable. She goes behind Arys’ back to Harley - she sees the monster he is - yet STILL seems to think he’s the best bet? I just couldn’t continue reading at that point. She’s so self absorbed and unlikeable by the 3rd book I just can’t.......

Mostly soft erotica, wish the writing was better.

The first book set the scene for what I was hppong, a well written juicy story with a badass heroine and some juicy sex scenes in between.
Got to book 2 and its just so badly written with no story to hold you in other than her 3 and 4 way sex scenes. And those are not particularly written well either.

The books were nice

Very well written, not sure if Alexa is the good girl or the bad cause she went from hunting the wrong doers to being the monster that she hunted herself. Not sure if she can change and actually be the light cause so far i want an Angel to tear her soul from her body cause she ain't no hero in my eyes.

I can't wait for her next book! You won't be disappointed in this series if you love the paranormal books....vampires, werewolves, demons, and fallen angels, OH MY!!!!!!!!

Better than I expected

I’m not normally a werewolf and vampire style reader. But I am into reading series of books that are mostly complete (missing book 5 right now and will now have to find it to continue the story).
I guess the real bonus was finding that the main character and I share a very special connection: a Birthday!!! Thanks Trina!!!

Must admit although I like the potential and idea of the story. However, four books in I can honestly say I hate Alexa. She's whinny, selfish, hypocritical, controlling and for someone supposedly so powerful she is forever getting her butt kicked.....Oh and she never seems to think beyond her own agenda never considering the long term ramifications of her actions and how they affect other people.
