The much anticipated companion volume to Emergence, the story of Dave Hooper's superhero embiggening. When an oil rig drills too deep under the Gulf of Mexico it breaks the capstone separating our world from the UnderRealms - home to monsters, daemons and dark magiks. The nightmares of our long ago come flooding back into the world where they are met by automatic weapons fire, heating seeking missiles (they're hell on dragons, don'tcha know) and one drunken, dissolute son of a bitch called Dave. But this is not Dave's story. This is the story of the poor bastards who had to put up with him while he saved the world and acted like a jerk.
John Birmingham grew up in Ipswich, Queensland and was educated at St Edmunds Christian Brother's College in Ipswich and the University of Queensland in Brisbane. His only stint of full time employment was as a researcher at the Defence Department. After this he returned to Queensland to study law but he did not complete his legal studies, choosing instead to pursue a career as a writer. He currently lives in Brisbane.
While a law student he was one of the last people arrested under the state's Anti Street March legislation. Birmingham was convicted of displaying a sheet of paper with the words 'Free Speech' written on it in very small type. The local newspaper carried a photograph of him being frogmarched off to a waiting police paddy wagon.
Birmingham has a degree in international relations.
When orc-like monsters start eating people on an oil rig who do they call for? A bunch of nerds headed by a bloke with a neck beard, some navy seals and a CIA bloke who smartly gets sidestepped by neckbeard guy. And they get mixed up with The Dave. Dave is a two-fisted, coke snorting, whore-chasing oil rig safety manager who happens to, well, get himself superhero status. This book is a companion to Birmingham's "Emergence", the first in his Dave vs The Monsters trilogy. Its lots of fun.
Yeh, as expected, same witty writing style. Interesting reading the same scenario as the novel however from other points of view, worth the few dollars for the novella. Authors style not for everyone, not the Tom Clancy serious type which I also like however is still very clever and entertaining.
Really liked this story in the Dave VS The Monsters world. Would like to have the rest of the books in the series finished so that we could read them. Definitely recommend this!
