This was the best novel in the series thus far, because it allows Ushio to be as central a character as Kei, while also making it clear how mutual their relationship is.

I know a book is good when all I can think to say for a review is excited and emotional babbling, along with a passionate waving of my hands. Please just picture that I am doing that, while smiling and tearing up a little.

Because, my god, I adored this. I got everything that I wanted from this volume (MORE USHIO POV SCENES!!! YES!!!) and then some -- I got things I didn't even know I wanted, and they were done perfectly. Because my thoughts are, sadly, nothing more than excited and emotional babbling accompanying passionate hand motions, I am forgoing my usual review style for just a list of my random thoughts:

- This volume felt more tender and warm than the previous two volumes did, which I really liked given that Kei and Ushio are two years into their relationship. Sometimes long term relationships in books feel kind of stagnant, but I really felt like they had come a long way and had a much more established routine/way of interacting.
- I loved that this volume focused on Ushio having a crisis and Kei struggling to figure out how to be there for him. It was a really good reversal of the last two volumes, which focused more on Kei's work struggles and Ushio supporting him, which in turn highlighted how each of them deals with crisis differently and showed how much Kei has grown over the last two years.
- Really, in general, I liked that Kei seemed a bit different -- softer, almost. Yes, he was still sassy and bitchy outside of his Kunedia-san persona, but the aggressive edge that was there in volume one has melted somewhat, and I really love seeing him change, and knowing that his change is likely due to a combination of Ushio and Kei becoming a more authentic blend/version of himself.
- I loved the random inclusions of Ushio's POV, and how none of the swaps are labeled. It was fun to be reading for a few sentences then go "wait... is this Ushio?" or read a whole page only to find out near the end it was Ushio the whole time. Like, it's fun, and I loved getting his perspective here and there; it added just a little something extra to the story and let us see into his head. I wish his POV scenes would have included Kei though, because I love seeing Kei through his eyes (I love seeing a character's love interest through their eyes when they are absolutely smitten).
- Okay -- my favorite part of the volume:

All in all, I loved this. A fantastic addition to the series. The ending almost made me cry again, and I hope, with all my heart, that there is more coming and we get more Ushio POV time b/c it is delightful.

dude this was so boring compared to the first two novels. The plot was so bland. Rating it four stars since I still love this series. It had so much potential but I think the politics of it really got to me so I didn't really like it. I was looking forward to find out more about Ushio and I even thought this novel would have him as the main voice, not that I don't like Kei as the voice, but you know...

I quite liked this volume. The plot was pretty goofy, but I still enjoyed it. My main issue though is that both Kei and Ushio were narrators and I could not tell their sections apart at all. There were a couple Ushio sections in the last volume, but it was pretty clear when they were and when it would switch back to Kei. That wasn't the case in this volume. I was constantly trying to find hints as to who was narrating. I think I got a full page into a section until I realized it was Ushio and not Kei, then I had to start the section all over again. Even though this was annoying, the book was still a quick and fun read.

This series is so wobbly, but I do enjoy it.

Since all the regular relationship stuff's been resolved and the two of them are solidly, happily together, this final volume went for a pretty out of left field development. (Although I say that after the silly amnesia plotline in book 2.)

All the political pieces are interesting and plotted out pretty well on their own, but how exactly does it fit with the other two books? How did an investigative news station somehow not know that Ushio, using his mother's maiden name, is the last son in an extremely well known political lineage?

Plus, with his dad planning to yank him back into the political spotlight and "keep him in the closet," that's uh. Impossible? Considering Ushio's first introduction in the first book was that he is a very openly bisexual artist. Everyone would know? He cannot be closeted when this is public information already covered in various news outlets??

So yeah, the gaping plot holes were pretty frustrating, but if you ignore those, I do like how substantial and strong their relationship is shown to be. Kei is fantastic. I love that he comes out swinging and really proves how much he loves Ushio, wants him in his life, and is willing to put his own very much cherished career on the line in order to save their relationship - and to keep Ushio happy.

Ushio's dad honestly gave up way too easily, but there's supposed to be a thread in there about how he'd gotten dragged away from a love of art into a political world he hadn't wanted to be a part of, either, so I suppose he's willing to let his son live out the life he'd wished he'd had. But then why all the threats and property destruction to begin with?

And then the conclusion, with the 5th floor walkup in some old apartment building that seems far away from everything, like the restaurants Kei loved and frequented, is...a choice. I like the familial connection and nostalgia and sense of forging a new life together and all that, but couldn't it have just been a normal house? Like, in a nice neighborhood that didn't sound like it was in an industrial complex?

It's such a mixed bag of a series. The plot is wobbly, but I really like the characters and how much they grow over time. Kei changes the most, but it's interesting that Ushio turned out to have been living a double life all along, too. Maybe that's why he'd connected to and understood Kei's two sides so well.

The writing is intelligently crafted and pretty solid in everything but the still unnecessarily frequent smutty parts. Those are important for the relationship dynamic and showing how much hot-and-cold Kei really does adore Ushio, but the writing is so awkwardly bad in those sections. And I'll be honest, I don't love the illustrations. I hope the manga adaptation has a different artist who can capture them better. Will be interesting to see it in that format.

One other thing that annoys me is how unclear it is when the point of view shifts between Kei and Ushio. There was one chapter where I couldn't tell at all who was present in the scene and which dialogue bits belonged to whom. I think there was actually a translation issue, where "I" was used when it should've been "he," but I had to read it about fifteen times to try to understand what was going on.

Not splitting into chapters seems to be a traditional light novel format, and at some point maybe I'll try to read up on why that is. But you could still put at the start of section breaks if you're moving out of one character's head into another. It almost felt intentional, like readers were supposed to be confused, but I don't see the point of that.

Still, I liked the mix of sweetness and angst in this final volume, and I have a fondness for this series as a whole. Partly based on liking the anime, and partly just because I liked getting to know Kei and Ushio and watching them build their life together.

"If I worry about you, will it ruin the economy?"

This is the last volume in the trilogy focused on Kei and Ushio (though there are other volumes focusing on Tatsuki as well as Shitara), and you can really feel the relationship come full circle with this one. This is the volume that packs the biggest punch, and also shows how much Kei has grown from the asshole brat he came across as in the first volume.

To keep it short, there are circumstances surrounding Ushio that force Kei to be proactive and to actually fight for his relationship, and it's so good to see him acknowledge how much Ushio means to him under all the personas - either the professional Kunieda-san persona, or the tsundere prickliness he adopts when he's with Ushio - he has. It's a story of reciprocation, of how Kei shows his love for Ushio and of how Ushio lets himself be the one to be protected, not the protector.

I'm sad that this trilogy has come to a close, but for me it's quite a satisfying finish. You can most definitely feel the character and relationship development that happened over the course of three volumes. I'm hoping Seven Seas licenses the side volumes as well!

A great ending to an overall excellent series! This didn't have any bumps like volume 2 did (and there was less sexism), so it was overall quite wonderful. It was nice to see Kei really come into his own and properly support Ushio.

If you like this, I would recommend giving the animated movie and manga a shot. The movie is short and cuts out an important moment, but generally it's wonderful. The art in the manga isn't the best, but it's a pretty decent adaptation.

This was definitely my favorite installment, despite some confusion as to who was talking from time to time lol It's the most solid plot, with only a few questionable moments à la throwaway comments by Ushio during the smut.

This is our first in-depth look into Ushio, his life, and motivations. I've always been of the opinion that Ushio's character was underdeveloped compared to Kei - I didn't always understand his actions, and to be fair, I didn't necessarily understand why he loved Kei - I only knew that it's undeniable that he did. This installment cleared up a lot of those issues for me. It didn't spell out the answers, but I think they're definitely there.

Moreover, it felt like Kei's growth throughout the last two installments all culminated in this—it enables him to "get his man" and stand his ground, in a way I don't think book 1 Kei ever could. It was certainly a pleasure to see!

In terms of the overall plot, I was honestly pretty satisfied. I got so angry when Ushio's situation was introduced—I know he has nostalgic feelings toward that secretary, but I'd like to punch him in the face a couple of times—but overall, my worst fears didn't come to fruition. Although I am not sure I quite understood what about Kei's speech really tipped the scales at the end there, I did find the whole thing extremely attractive LOL

As far as I know, this is the last installment in Kei and Ushio's story for a while. The next few books are for other characters, such as Tatsuki (ugh) and Shitara (!! Interesting!!), but I am not sure if Seven Seas intends to translate them.

My only serious complaint would be that there was no indication for a POV shift when we're in first person. So it always took about a paragraph or two to figure out what was off—namely, that we were now Ushio and not Kei LOL.

What a fun and quick romance from Japan. This seems to be the final book, although there could be more if the author wanted. It's a great relationship story. We get to see how their relationship works, which I love.

The story is well paced to start with. We have set-up and then the complication and wow, the end feels like it wraps up quick with a nice tidy bow. It's just a little too quick and tidy. I'm not sure it would have worked that way.

Kei almost quit work. Have the two of them been found out? What a wonderful bath scene with ice cream as well. Ushio is having a rough time with his father. Both wants the best for the other and makes decisions for them without asking, which drives me crazy, but it sort of happens to people.

One of my most hated tropes is in here. Amnesia. It's so overused. I tried to look how many people actually suffer from it and I couldn't find a number. They say that short term memory is more often affected from it, which authors never use that part of it. How the amnesia ended was silly and cute. I really hate that trope. so. much.

Still, I have loved reading about their relationship together. It's a good spicy story and I'm glad I have read it. Each book has been around 200 pages, so it's an easy read.

I really loved this volume and it made me cry so it should get 6 stars really. I always give a bonus start if a books makes me cry.

This one surprised me again by giving me a lot more info about Japan than I expected in a series that started kind of silly. In the previous one, we went deeper into the world of the TV news, and in this one, we go into politics. We learn a lot more about Ushio, and his family dynamics is far more complex that I would have expected - shame on me, clearly. I loved Kei in this one, and his deep trust in Ushio is deeply moving. 10/10 what can I say.
