I think the insect egg that Gen was gave will have strong effect, and Gen will struggle by himself. I like the combination of Gen and Yoshimori (also Tokine), so I don’t want Gen to leave them.

Gore: No
Magic: Yes (they have barrier making powers, I think they call it manipulating space and dimensions, something like that, I don't remember, but I consider it to be magic)

Romance: (This one's kind of hard to say) So far, there isn't much romance, although it's obvious that Yoshimori likes Tokine, and I think she likes him that way too.
Action: 4 stars
Pacing: 3.5 stars
Plot: 4 stars
Drawings/Art: 4 stars

Warning, Spoilers

This volume starts with the Kokuboro having a meeting about the Karasumori site, it's master, and a bit about their plans. Aihi (the scientist for the Kokuboro) talks a bit about her past with Kaguro.

Yoshimori visits where Gen is staying for the first time since Gen came there and he he brings a cake that he made. Then after a little while, a strange women breaks in through the door, Tokine comes in right after, and the women introduces herself as Atora Hanashima, a demon tamer from the Night Troops and also Gen's tamer. She talks a bit about her and Gen's past and that Gen does't like sweets. Then she talks about their lack of teamwork and that she's going to train them the following night.

That night, Atora shows up with her demon partner named Raizo and explains to the three what they are going to be doing for their training and they start. The rules are: they have to stay on the school grounds and they've got one hour, in that hour, they have to catch her. It starts a bit rough since Gen charges off immediately even though their supposed to be working as a team, so Yoshimori chases after Gen to get him to cooperate with them. Tokine comes up with a plan and tells Yoshi and Gen what they should do. When she says that Gen will focus on offense (because he's still skeptical about teamwork so she wants to give him the central position), to the kekkaishis' shock, Gen offers to let Yoshimori do that instead of him, which means he's starting to trust them and cares about them. That's what they do and they catch Atora before the time is up, which means that they've passed. Before leaving, Atora tells Gen to treasure his friends.
I like Atora, she's interesting, plus she broke down the door instead of knocking, hilarious.

Later, two Kokuboro members: Gagin and Heikian are seen at the colorless marsh to find Lord Uro, although unfortunately for them, they are unsuccessful even after emptying the swamp. Yoshimori, Tokine, and Gen go there to investigate and they find that Lord Uro is safe.

Meanwhile, Yoshi's grandpa visits his old friend again, the one that's crazy about demons and knows a lot about them. They talk about the Kokuboro, the human skin, and something about the monster fox of the black pampus grass.
One thing I don't understand is, the leader of Kokubora (Byaku) has a secret meeting with Ichiro Ogi, I wonder what they're up to, this also means that the Ogi person is also up to no good just like I suspected.

Later on, Madarao explains that ayakashi need to be around humans, if they have no homes or human contact, they will eventually perish. Then the Kokuboro send one of their members, Shion to go kill Heisuke (the old friend of Yoshi's dad and grandpa that's crazy about demons) and they both decide to go there after receiving a letter from Heisuke. They meet a member of the Night Troops and they go to Heisuke's house, but when they get there, they are too late, he's not there, he's dead. The next day, they leave for his funeral. Later on, we find a shocking discovery.

The Kokuboro have another meeting about the Karasumori site and that they should somehow get the Night Troop members away from Karasumori.
Yoshimori's grandpa started to work moe with Masamori now because of what happened to his friend. That night, Yoshimori and Gen talk about Masamori and that just because he's Yoshimori's brother doesn't mean that he trusts him. He also says that he made a bitter cake for Gen (that must taste disgusting for people like me who love sweets).

The next day, Kaguro meets with Gen and tells him that he's one of them and he gives him an egg saying that when it hatches, it will grow into "a creature that reflects its master's innermost self," when Gen is at home he decides to throw the egg away, but then he hear's his voice coming from thee egg, he doesn't throw it away and he doesn't tell the others about it either.

This volume ends with Aihi explaining to Byaku that maybe the princess can get better if she goes to the Karasumori site and that she can make an device that will teleport her there so that they will only be there for a little while. She wants to be the one to use the device because she wants to go outside since she hasn't been outside in a long time, but Byaku doesn't let her, since he thinks she'll run away, which she probably will, and that they still need her.

I don't have many questions about it like others would, because I'm ahead in the anime so I know mostly what's going to happened, but there are always differences in manga and anime.

Can't wait to read the next one and so on.

After I finish a few volumes, I watch some of those anime episodes (not all of them, just some of my faves) just to see how those scenes look and any manga is always more funnier when it's animated, especially Kodocha.

Overall, I like this manga more and more, although this volume wasn't as enjoyable as the other volumes were. I'm getting really curious about the area Karasumori (I know I say that sentence in every Kekkaishi review, but I'm even more curious now). Oh well, I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm not sure if I should review every book I read in this series or just some of them yet, I keep thinking that maybe I should review just some of the volumes. I think that's what I'll do.

I'm hoping that the future arcs in this series are a bit more interesting than this one, I think they might be.

Kekkaishi, Vol. 9 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (76–85) of the on-going manga series.

Atora Hanashima, Gen Shishio's former Night Troops instructor, pays him a surprise visit at Karasumori. She is displeased with his inability to work with Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura as a team, and subjects them all to rigorous training exercise to bring them up to a cohesive team.

Meanwhile, the Kokubōrō ayakashi send a reconnaissance expedition to the Colorless Marsh in hopes of unseating its master, and follow up with an assassination attempt on Heisuke Matsudo, an expert on their demon kind. However, Heisuke fakes his demise, fooling not just his enemies, but his old friend, Shigemori Sumimura – Yoshimori's grandfather, as well.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Yellow Tanabe. The Karasumori Trio goes on a cooperate retreat of sorts to have them work better as a team by Atora Hanashima – Gen Shishio's former Night Troops instructor. Meanwhile, Kokubōrō Clan attacks the master of the Colorless Marsh to further their plans for the Karasumori site and its guardians.

All in all, Kekkaishi, Vol. 9 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

We're getting to the set up of something really sad, and I don't want to read the next volume. There is a lot of political drama in this volume that I missed the first time I read it. Really interesting, showing how the ayakashi are trying to integrate into human society to take control.

Volume 9 of Kekkaishi is somewhat of a placeholder volume. A lot of different things happen that provide background for the ayakashi and although things that lead into future plot points. I have mixed feelings about this volume.

On the positive side, I loved the story line that forced Tokine, Yoshimori, and Gen to work together. Their natural inclinations are to be three lone gunmen who happen to be in the same battlefield. Gen's "monster tamer," otherwise known as teacher/mentor/babysitter arrives to change things for the trio. Like most of the adults in this series, she's a bit twisted. You don't know whether are to help or harm the group. But it makes for an interesting battle as the trio are forced to work as a team to defeat her challenge.

On the unsure side is the story line about the ayakashi. We are introduced to Princess Kokuboro. Apparently her powers are weakening and she needs to harness the power of the site that the trio defends in order to survive. I'm a little confused on exactly who she is or why the fighting ayakashi seem to be holding her prisoner. Or are they protecting her? I don't know. It adds another layer of complexity to the ayakashi. They have someone in their society they consider a princess. It shows they're not flatly evil nor are they without intelligence or human-like traditions. I don't know what direction the plot will go with this, but it's interesting. For the moment though, I'm quite confused.

There's a third story arc involving Matsuda, a friend of Yoshimori's grandfather. He's the old professor type. Very eccentric. The ayakashi try to take him over and fake his suicide. But he doesn't actually get taken over. He just lets the ayakashi think they've taken him over and then he actually does commit suicide. It's very confusing and I don't yet see the point. But I'm sure there is one.

Overall, this volume is interesting, but it leaves so many questions unanswered that it's one of the more frustrating volumes.

This volume has a regrouping after the last volume and retraining for Yoshimori, Tokine and Gen, as well as some background development for the enemies (although they don't explain the real reason they are attacking Karasumori).

An old friend of Yoshimori's grandfather named Matsuda, who seems to be exceptionally weird himself, is introduced and asked for help by the grandfather as well as attacked by the enemies. Lovely bit of Yoshimori's father in action ^^. It turns out that Matsuda is extra creepy himself and while he takes himself out of the action in his old house so convincingly that Yoshimori's grandfather goes to his funeral, he actually goes after the enemies themselves in their stronghold.

Gen is made more comfortable with Yoshimori and Tokine and made aware of the fact that they are friends (his personality doesn't really lend itself to this thought - we won't get to it this time but there is enough reason for that). But then the enemy who so far was the strongest opponent makes him an offer to come to their side and reminds him of the fate of his sister...

This one was so packed with backstory that I didn't want it to end! My favorite character was Mamezo, Lord Uro's aide. He looks like a cherry with limbs. We finally figured out who is running the Kokuboro and what their jobs are, as well as what they really intend on doing. Gen is starting to become friends with the Kekkaishi, and to make sure they are working together as a team, Gen's monster tamer boss (Atora) from the Night Troops shows up and tests them. The other storyline is with Yoshimori's grandfather and his friend Matsudo, who has found out where in the other dimension the Kokuboro's castle is at, though they are now on his trail. He must fake his own death in order to escape from them. Also Kaguro the original fake human-skin ayakashi is trying to tempt Gen over to the Kokuboro's side of the fight, but I think he is losing the battle.

In this volume we learn a little more about Gen's past and how a "tamer" has helped him learn to control his ayakashi side. And, it's that side of Gen that the Kokuboro appeal to to get Gen to switch sides. I'm also glad to see that side characters like Heisuke (does he look like the Emperor, or is it just me?) seem to have larger roles in store for themselves. Favorite illustration: Raizo the electrocuting bear tossing Gen around like a chew toy.

We meet Atora and learn even more about Gen, who's grown on me in this volume. We saw a lot from the bad guys' perspective this time, and are piecing together the mystery of Karasumori.

Oh! And Shuji/dad gets in on the action! He has a robe and everything..! Did he used to fight alongside his wife..? I wonder when we'll learn more about her..?
