A very enlightening book on the many teachings of Ayurveda and the new discoveries in science that mirror some of these ancient teaching and what, as Chopra says, “the teachings have know for over 5000 years”.
There are plenty of nuggets in here about how we can find more balance and wellbeing by tuning into our bodies and focussing on each of the five senses. The five senses all have their own methods for nourishment and healing, as do each of the different body types: Vatta, Pitta, Kapha, and the different variations of each.
As many functional medicine practitioners will tell you, fad diets won’t work in the long-term. You need to understand your body type to understand yourself and then provide it the nourishment it requires, which also responds to different nourishment during different seasons.
“The secret to eternal youth is a balanced metabolism, a constant chemical flow that processes food, air and water in perfect equilibrium without losing a stitch to entropy.”
There’s so much to be fascinated by in this book.
I hadn’t thought about the human body as a “Pharmacy”, but - of course - it is! “Our bodies, in fact, are wonderful pharmacies and they make wonderful drugs. The human body can make everything; antibiotics, immune modulators, tranquillisers, sleeping pills, you name it, the human body can make it in the right dose, at the right time, for the right organ, there are no side effects and all the instructions come with the packaging.”
Chopra indicates his belief that all disease is reversible. If there is a mechanism for advancement of a disease there exists a mechanism for reversal. Medical industry has discovered coronary heart disease can be reversed and this has sparked a host of scientific medical research around how to reverse various diseases. Whilst he says Ayurvedic tradition knows about this, it is science that has discovered for itself and started to research.
Again, it seems that certain traditions of ancient cultures around the world knew a lot more than we do. If you think of the Egyptians and the tales of an advanced civilisation during that time, certainly they were more advanced than any mathematicians or architects of modern times.
The various methods for healing based around the 5 senses was fascinating, from sound to touch to taste. Different music will change & secrete different chemicals in the body, so Music therapy is used for a host of different ailments and recovery.
Ayurveda saying: “The only reason people grow old and die is that they see other people growing old and dying.”
“What we see. We become. What we hear. We become. What we touch. We become. What we smell & taste. We become. Our bodies on the metabolic end products of our sensory experiences and our interpretation of those sensory experiences.”
There’s plenty of good advice in here for wellbeing, which we sort of know anyway but often ignore - from changes to diet to suit our specific body types, understanding how much sleep we need for our body type, the type of music that we will find healing, the need for regular meditation practice, regular massage / touch, purpose, belonging. There are small things everyone can introduce to help themselves and also, we can listen more to our own bodies, understand what they are telling us to identify the first stages of disease, which - Chopra says again and again - is reversible with the right intentions.
An Experiment with seniors pretending to be in the 1950s for 10-days, where the subjects pretended they were 20 years younger than they were, in a controlled study by Harvard Medical School, resulted in the subjects reversing ageing by several years across a range of key biological markers. This is possible due to the “collective perception of people and their interpretation of what is happening to them, which actually causes physiological changes in their blood. Their hormone levels change, the length of their fingers increased, they grew in height, they could see better, they could hear better. In fact, all they had to do was just be themselves. The instruction was: let yourself be just who you were in 1959!”
The power of intent and the power of the mind. Fascinating.
This book changed my life. Deepak has such amazing way to explain the mix between science and spirituality. He knows how both are connected. Then, he has such knowledge of the universe, he has access to unviersal wisdom and he teaches that wisdom and how to access that wisdom. He share elemental life knowledge from Ayurveda, oriental and occidental medicine.
Still listening to it on Audible. Might not agree with every opinion, however, its interesting to hear and make sense.

In normal Deepak fashion, this is an enlightening and educating work. It is a series of presentations he has done, interspersed with comments from Deepak and a narrator. A few short segments repeat info from others, but it is worth listening again. The last chapter is a collection of all the meditations that are scattered throughout.
Great resource of eternal wisdom, deep knowledge, and calm. Deepak is, as usual, adheres to high standards. His lectures are filled with practical tips, profound meditations, and he structures all his talks in a bullet-points manner, so it's easy to follow, remember and use. Great listen to center oneself. And to remind us that we are spirits having human experience.
I was sceptical of this book, considering the sheer noise around the author. However, after dedicatedly following the path he's shown in this book, I can say that I've progressed a lot with my anxiety and regret management.
I have become much more aware about my feelings, and intentions and there is a certain sense of calm that's descended on my life.
It was alright, I'm a Chopra fan so I liked it. It was kind of a hodgepodge of clips pulled from his live seminars and also excerpts from several of his books. Because of that structure a lot of things were repeated which was my only real complaint.
Life changing. I am obsessed. His explanations of Ayurveda, the Circadian Rhythm, and self healing are so incredible and have changed my life, health, and overall wellness.
