Classics never go out of fashion! There’s a book to suit every taste. From wisdom to romance, from social commentary to adventure and intrigue, from science fiction to jungle fun, and from fairy tales to Shakespearian drama! Let children know and live and dream their tales!
All right, seems like either the book's writers or the editors don't know Beaumont from Villeneuve, because they're mislabelled this as being the Beaumont version when it's Villeneuves. A butchered version of Villeneuve that chopped off large chunks of it, specifically by the end, but still her version. So first strike: not knowing the author and the version is one huge mistake.
Then the second huge mistake is that this adaptation ends extremely abruptly, right after Beast turns back into a man. It completely omits why he was cursed and by whom. Again, I have to question the reluctance of so many adapters of this tale to include this bit. Is it that the fairy is a sexual predator? Seriously, the number of adaptations of Villeneuve's version that omit this bit is ridiculous, but also troubling for what it reveals about people's unwillingness to acknowledge female molesters.
Third thing I didn't like was the depiction of Beast, he looks like a depressed Chewbacca. He is supposed to be frightening and imposing, Beauty trembles in his presence at first, but looking at this sad-sack mix of the Yeti and Han Solo's sidekick with the nose of Gerard Depardieu (nobody's going to convince me it isn't Depardieu! Look closely at the cover), you wouldn't get that from this.
Long story short: a whitewashed adaptation that's not really complete as it should be and that changes and omits important sections.
I love this edition of illustrated classics! I have about 16 of them. and beauty and the beast's actual tale is a lot different than the one from the Disney animation! I mean beauty has 11 brothers and sister! and when she goes to live in the castle with a beast she dreams of the prince at night and he pleads for her to save him! I wish they added that in the movie adaptation.
