Montana Fire #3

Burnin' For You

Rate this book
He’s loved her for years . . .

Smoke jumper Reuben Marshall harbors a deep regret—a split second decision he made that cost the life of his crew boss. His paralyzing grief has kept him from pursuing his long-burning interest in pretty, petite smoke jumper/bomber pilot Gilly Priest. Not that he has a prayer at winning her heart. Not only is she not interested in dating a teammate, she’s also the preacher’s daughter. And while Rueben’s not the chiefest of sinners, he’s no saint…

A dark secret that keeps her from trusting . . .

Gilly Priest has worked hard to carve out her niche as a female bomber pilot in the dangerous world of firefighting. Sure she’s small, but she’s made up for her statue in courage, grit and the tenacity to face danger other pilots wouldn’t dare. And yes, she’s noticed handsome Rueben Marshall—who wouldn’t? Dependable and strong, he takes up most of the space in the room. But Gilly’s dark secrets won’t allow her close enough to talk to him, let alone let herself fall for him.

A race to rescue the people they love . . .

When their smokejumper plane goes down in the northwestern Montana mountains, wounding their team, Gilly and Reuben are the only ones capable of hiking out to find help. But when their rescue mission turns out to be a fight for their lives against the elements, a saboteur, and a forest fire, they discover they’ll have to put aside their fears and learn to trust each other. But will trust ignite something they both long for . . .and fear? And can they save their team before tragedy strikes—again?

I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.

I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.

Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.

Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.

Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. And, if you're interested, sign up for my newsletter, a quarterly sneak peek into upcoming releases and projects. Thank you for your interest and support.

God Bless and Happy Reading!

Burnin’ For You was another amazing addition to the Montana Fire Series. These two characters were simply wonderful to read about. I loved the contrast of Reuben Marshall and Gilly Priest. They appear, at first glance, to be opposites. However, it becomes totally clear that these are both very tough people who have had to work through situations that have left them hurting. I thought that Reuben was such an excellent model of strength and caring.

Burnin’ For You packs in the action and does not let up! It is the novel that answers the question of who is behind the ongoing threat that the smokejumpers have been facing. There were so many terrifying moments in this book! Add to that a fantastic love story that was able to break open after seven long years of these two characters being drawn to each other, and you have a combination that has it all.

I have enjoyed the Montana Fire Series so much and can easily imagine reading these books several times in future years.

Love, love, love this series! I read one right after the other and then re-read my favorite parts from all three again when I was done. In all the books, there are deep emotions simmering beneath the surface in the characters, brought to light by the highly dangerous circumstances they find themselves in, resulting in explosive sparks! There is a blend of vulnerability and strength that is appealing. I think we all feel flawed and vulnerable in some way, but want to believe that we will have the strength to not only persevere but succeed when trials come. I kept reliving the stories of all three books in my mind for days afterward. Highly recommend!!!

Burnin' For You is the third of the Montana Fire series and I think that it is my favorite. It is the story of smokejumper Reuben Marshall and pilot Gilly Priest. Reuben is a big sweet bear of a guy. Gilly is a tough girl who wants to stand on her own feet without help and contribute to the team by making sure she gets them out to the fire and home safely. Their's is a tender story of two souls with wounds to overcome. Someone is out to sabotage the team of smokejumpers. We have gotten hints of this in all three books but they are really stepping things up in this book. I found it hard to put this one down. Expect lots of action, danger, questions and suspense-all things that bring the team closer. Faith and romance round it out for another great book by Susie May. The books really need to be read in order but so worth it.

Burnin' for You...my favorite of the trilogy! I loved the suspense, danger, and story. I felt for Gilly and especially what she went through when she was younger. A great conclusion and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

Action packed from beginning to end! This was a great conclusion to the Montana Fire trilogy. There is two other books in this series, but the mystery of who is out to get the team (who I guessed correctly but only after an obvious clue was give) is concluded in this book.

Rueben and Gilly is two adorable characters who both had to deal with issues from the past to be able to move forward together. I enjoyed a lot of the side characters as well and there was quite a few scenes which had me smiling.

There was a few scenes which had me holding my breath and thinking "No, that character has to be ok".

A series to be read if you like romantic suspense/action.

For those readers who enjoy clean romance, this book was not as "heated" on the romance as book 1 but did have a few kissing scenes.

I loved this book! Awesomeness, the whole lot of it. Romance (such romance, I think Susan May Warren might be my favourite author for building romantic tension and then letting the sparks fly), with a huge helping of suspense as the characters fight for their lives. There is also such a feeling of team connectedness. It so much fun joining these brave men and women as they jump from planes, fight fires, fly over dangerous terrain, and fall in love.

Gilly knows what it takes to face her fears and prove herself every single day. It's what she must do to hold onto her place as pilot for the smokejumper team. For Reuben, smoke jumping is something he is good at, it gave him a chance at a new life, but he has many regrets, especially surrounding the deaths of his teammates. Gilly has decided to never trust a man again. Reuben knows Gilly deserves more than he could offer her, particularly when he can hardly construct a sentence when she is near. But when a simple jump turns deadly and it is revealed that someone is targeting the team, Gilly and Reuben will have to work together to save both their and their team's lives.

I enjoyed all the books in this Montana Fire series, but I think they definitely got better with each book, making this one my favourite. I love how so many familiar faces reappear from many of Warren's previous novels. I love all the characters. I love the setting, such rugged beauty - terrifying and breathtaking in both its glory and danger. There is no shortage of action, and the combination of friendship, haunting personal secrets, faith finding and really good romance make this book an absolute pleasure to read. It was so much fun to be swept away by this story.

I highly recommend this series for readers who love well-written books with loveable characters, plenty of adventure, high-tension moments, and heartwarming romance. All three books are well worth reading.

Oh me, oh my! I think this whole series has spoilt me forever when it comes to the romantic suspense genre, because I’m not sure I will ever find another book that will make me feel like these books have. Reading these books is like an intravenous dose of romance and action. Somehow, Susan May Warren knows exactly the right words to use to tap straight into my visceral senses, and my poor heart doesn’t know whether to pound, stop, melt, or some strange combination of all three. How will anything else ever compare with that?

Rueben and Gilly . . . *sigh* I loved Jed and Kate, and I loved Conner and Liza, but there was something about Rueben in particular that tugged at my heartstrings. I think it was his vulnerability; his lack of confidence around Gilly. He’s quieter than his smokejumping teammates; a man of action more than words. But his emotions run deep, and he feels like he’s let a lot of people down in his life: his father, Jock and the other teammates who lost their lives in a forest fire almost a year ago. His friendship with Gilly, meagre though it is, means too much to him to risk spoiling it by making a fool of himself and pursuing his attraction to her.

Gilly once had aspirations of being a smokejumper herself, but her fear of heights held her back. And yet, put her in a pilot seat and she’ll fly into what feels like hell if she has to. And that is exactly what she does at the beginning of this novel, on her first official day as a firebomber. She pushes herself to prove that she is capable and fearless, in spite of her size and gender, and she most certainly does NOT need a man in her life; someone who would feel compelled to protect her all the time, or worse, would end up trampling her heart.

Meanwhile, it looks like the arsonist who has been lighting fires and trying to pin the blame on Conner’s drones has given up. But when their plane crashes, leaving one of their team members dead(!) and two seriously wounded, Gilly and Reuben learn they couldn’t be more wrong. I was surprised that they learned who was behind the sabotage and arson halfway through the novel, but don’t think for one minute that it means the tension lets up! I guarantee your adrenaline will be pumping right up to the end.

Susan May Warren seems to have taken ‘show, don’t tell’ to a whole new level in this series. She doesn’t just show; she recreates the experience. And in a novel with raging forest fires, plane crashes, an escape-for-your-life trek through forest land, and a dangerous air rescue, that’s a lot of experiencing!

She’s also one of the handful of writers I’ve found who can create emotional intensity in her romances (and I don’t just mean the kissing bits!) without it coming over as cheesy or overdone. Her characters connect on a soul level and their attraction is anchored by that connection, making the romance a completely organic part of the story. And maybe that's why I loved Reuben's character so much. It's always the quiet ones that have the hidden depths!

Seriously, if you love romantic suspense, you are missing out big time if you don't get your hands on these books.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review.

This is one of my favorite series. I pre-ordered every book so I could have it on release day. This is the last book in this series, but there is a spin off series coming next and I can't wait.

This book has danger and suspense. It's full on and my heart was pounding a few times. Strong characters. Awesome pacing. I loved it!

BURNIN FOR YOU, the third installment in the Montana Fire Series sizzles.

Smoke jumper Reuben Marshall has his demons. Feeling he could have prevented the death of his crew boss, he struggles with grief. But he also struggles with his attraction for smoke jumper and pilot, Gilly Priest. He knows she’s not interested in a relationship with a teammate, but that doesn’t make her any less captivating.

Gilly Priest has worked hard to get where she’s at. Petite and tenacious, she’s a gutsy pilot who will do whatever it takes to get her smoke jumping team in and out of danger. Reuben Marshall has not escaped her notice, but having a relationship with a team member rarely works out.

When Gilly’s plane goes down with her team on board, only she and Reuben are capable of going for help. With their team running out of time, Gilly and Reuben must navigate not only the wilderness and a forest fire, but quite possibly the person who’s been sabotaging their team.

BURNIN FOR YOU was another amazing installment in this fast-paced, suspense-filled series. With each new installment, we learn more about other members of the smoke jumping team, while catching up with the main characters of the other books in the series. Reuben and Gilly work well as a team, but their chemistry goes beyond that of teammates. I love that each member we learn about has a superhero-type persona, but inside, they all struggle with their own insecurities and fears—fears they slowly realize they have to surrender to God. Great characters. Great stories. Great series.

BURNIN' FOR YOU is the third book in Ms. Warren's Montana Fires series and readers will want to read them in order since the sabotage and mystery start there with the damaged parachutes, escalate to include tampered-with drones in book two, and then comes to a fiery end as the villain moves on to planes....
I enjoyed getting to know Reuben and Gilly better in this story. Their hopes and buried dreams, their fears and rejections and all that made them who they are. I also enjoyed another burning visit to the northern forests during fire season, an up close and personal look at smoke jumping and all they face.
I was a bit confused by somethings, went back and reread and it wasn't clarified, but I can't tell you what because that would ruin the story for you. I'd also love more background on Reuben's father... something about him intrigued me.
All in all, this was a great read. Not as long as Ms. Warren's usual stories but long enough to develop the characters, set the scene and draw the reader in. I will be back with a review (in a few weeks) of Ms. Warren's fall 2016 release Wild Montana Skies.
I love Ms. Warren's books and BURNIN' FOR YOU was no different. It left me shutting off my kindle with a sigh and wondering what I could read next that would (as if anything could) top this.

The third and final book in Warren's Montana Fire trilogy wraps all of the storylines up in a satisfying way. This tale by far has the most action and suspense of the series, as readers finally discover who is behind the arson-created fires. The relationship between Gilly and Reuben is wonderfully written. The intertwining of a faith message of God holding them close to Himself, along with both of them learning how to trust is beautifully conveyed. It's best to read this entire series in order so as to keep the large cast of characters straight.
Bomber pilot Gilly has gained respect from the smoke jumpers she accompanies to fight fires in the wilds of Montana. She has also caught the eye of smoke jumper Reuben, although both of them have secrets they are hiding that make them shy away from revealing their feelings. When their plane goes down deep in the forest, with fire raging nearby, the two must rely on each other when they discover sabotage and the identity of the culprit. Then it becomes a fight to stay alive as they try to avoid the fire, as well as those who would like to see them dead.https://www.rtbookreviews.com/book-re...

Just when you think the perilous situations these smoke jumpers get in can't get more complicated, they do. Since I've read all 3 book in this series I feel like I actually survived a river rescue, aggressive grizzly attack, skydiving AND plane crashes, not to mention numerous forest fires and arson threats.

This story is the one where we *finally* get Reuben and Gilly's story, an attraction that has been hinted in the previous books. They learn a lesson in teamwork and trust when their team's lives depend on their abilities to battle the elements and find help (and all of this while realizing their chemistry and fighting an arsonist.)

One important line was delivered by Gilly's sister, and if I may paraphrase, she encouraged Gilly to not letting her fears determine or failures dictate her choices or limit her potential.

The arc of a mystery arsonist is finally solved in this one. It was well threaded through the 3 different stories -- I didn't suspect who it was at all!

Main theme/lesson: Trusting God to handle your life is the only way to have true peace. And, illustrating how God waits for us to choose Him, seek Him.

Another action packed romance from Warren! I have enjoyed this series and I am really looking forward to the new one that these kick off. Burnin' For You had all the elements that draw you in and keep the pages burning, um I mean turning... Danger, betrayal, friendship, romance, faith, hope, suspense and action. I enjoyed getting to see Gilly and Reuben find their way through not only the danger, but also their own issues and into a sweet romance! The ending left off with one part of the story still open, not in regard to the romance (never fear); so I am hoping that the loose end will some how get tied up in the next series. If not, that's okay too, Warren hinted at a conclusion she just did not spell it out.

Overall, a really enjoyable read!

Once again I have been captured and made to feel as if I've lived in Susan's novels! I am continually amazed at how well-written and well-developed her stories are! They build me up, and yet humble me, and this one is no exception. Not only have I laughed, cried, and sat on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen, but I found myself singing, "Great is Thy Faithfulness" all the way through the book. I fell in love with the wonderful characters of sweet Gilly & strong Reuben, who learn that "the only way we can have peace with our decisions & choices, is if we trust God." One of my favorite quotes is: "...as if creation was made to flourish even under suffering. Starting anew, despite the ashes." "Strength for today & bright hope for tomorrow" accurately describes this book! LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!

Gilly Priest and Reuben Marshall have worked together for years with the Jade County Smoke Jumpers, appreciating each other from a distance and deciding to keep it that way. After executing a daring fly-over, Gilly saves Reuben and his team of jumpers from a dangerous fire; disobeying orders, but displaying her daring piloting skills. After the smoke settles, it just takes one celebratory dance at the Ember Hotline Saloon and Grill, and everything between them re-ignites.

Susan May Warren has added a third excellent novella to her "Montana Fire" series, as Gilly and Reuben navigate their relationship through dangerous territory, both real and imagined.

"The only way we can have peace with decisions and choices is if we trust God."

Just finished binge reading this series! I absolutely loved all 3 books. Susan writes the danger element so well, and though it seems a little incredible that they can never seem to catch a break, her characters are fighters, and I loved reading about the smokejumpers. Take me to Montana! I love this area of the US! So beautiful!

I basically read this book in one day and the series in a weeks time. The hero in this book, Rueben, is the strong silent type who is protective, brave, a smokejumper as well as bull rider. He is as big as an ox and yet has a tender heart. Gilly, heroine, is tough and feisty but also has a heart of gold. This book is romantic suspense at its best! I recommend it and the whole series:)

These are some great exciting stories that I'm clearly breezing through! I am really enjoying the suspense, mystery and action of the books. The main characters in this book are Reuben and Gilly. Gilly got on my nerves a little. I think she dragged out the "I am She'Ra" outlook on life a little too long. But they make a good team along with the rest of the hot shots and smoke jumpers.

There are a lot of characters within this series that also intertwines with other series by Mrs. Warren and after reading this one I now understand where one of her newest series "The Montana Marshalls" is coming from.

Rating: PG -alcohol consumption, intent to do harm, implied swear words, some graphic detail regarding an accident
Language: no use of deity or profanity, during some intense and stressful moments there are implied "swear" words that a couple of the characters express
Recommend: yes

I recently read the Montana Marshalls series by this author, and it was quite awesome. I had wondered why the oldest of the 6 siblings didn't get his book in the series, and was then told he had his own book in this series...so I had to read it. And it was quite awesome too, and suspenseful. I enjoyed it enough that I may have to read the rest of the series.

Burnin' for You by Susan May Warren
Montana Fire: Summer of Fire Trilogy Book Three
Reuben Marshall has a past of failures that haunts him. The if-onlys he'd have followed his instincts or done things differently. That fear of failure holds him back from getting to know the pretty pilot for their smokejumping team as well.

Gilly Priest, aka the preacher's daughter, isn't sure she's worthy of God's love. And defintely not dating material. If she was though, Reuben seems like the trustworthy type of guy she could lean on.

When a crisis hits their smokejumping team, Reuben and Gilly need to work together to save them. And that includes opening themselves up to trusting each other and working together. This is the last book in this trilogy. There has been a continued story in each book about someone stealing Conner's drones and starting fires with them. Great series. I love how this author writes, making everything so real.

SMOKING HOT BOOK

This is another fantastic book by Susan May Warren!
I've LOVED this whole series about the Jude County Smoke Jumpers.
In this series the author has vividly painted in words all the aspects of what it's like to be a smoke jumper and the lives they lead.
It's not an easy life. There are many struggles sometimes physically but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually. These young men save lives every time they jump. I for one am thankful they do.
This book is full of action, suspense, drama and a bit of romance. Just my kind of book!

While reading this book I was very conscious of the fire out of control in Hamilton Montana. I enjoyed the series and was good to meet new characters in a dangerous job and leading into the new series with Peak Mercy Falls Rescue. Rueben n Gilly's story was compacted in drama in ten chapters. Just hope those injuries are healing for CJ as I think his story and Hannah's is coming.
Lots of research and detail in the pages. Looking forward to the next book.

Another great romantic suspense in this summer series by Susan May Warren. Loved the hesitant romance and loved Gilly and especially Reuben (a sweet, strong, gentle giant of a man). We also finally have some resolution in this one to the suspected arsons, culminating with a shocking suspect! Already anxiously awaiting the Wild Montana Skies series!

I knew I would like Rueben and Gilly's story. Great dynamics between these two and, of course, lots of action in the last few days of the fire season for the smokejumpers and their number one pilot. To think that all Gilly had to do to unlock shy Rueben's voice was to... (no spoilers; discover it for yourself).
