When Thunderbolt goes public with his secret identity, Peter Cannon, enemies come out of the woodwork to take him down...

I'm a fan of the Charlton characters and I saw this on InstockTrades for cheap a while back. I thought it was the newer Thunderbolt omnibus but it was still a great read.

Trained at a lamasery in the Himalayas, Peter Cannon has mastery of his body and mind. When he creates an illusionary dragon to deter nuclear testing, he opens a can of worms. Cannon creating an illusionary dragon kind of reminds me of Ozymandias in Watchmen, which makes sense since Ozymandias was based on Cannon. People come gunning for him and his abilities are tested to their limits and beyond.

I had no expectation to like this as much as I did. Peter Cannon is an ass kicking martial arts hero, determined to help humanity without ruling them. Other people studied the same scrolls as Peter, making for some tough enemies, along with US Government super soldiers. There are some guest appearances by a couple Charlton characters that made me smile.

Jonathan Lau's art couple with Simon Bowland's color give the book the feel of painted pulp covers at times, probably intentional. Steve Darnall and Alex Ross give the book a great pace. Single issues were gripping on their own. I didn't once thing there was any filler.

This wasn't the Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt omnibus I thought I was buying but it was great. 4 out of 5 stars.

This revival of the obscure but awesome Charlton Comics superhero Thunderbolt was pretty good but I didn't love it. My favourite part was probably getting to read the unpublished "Secret Origins" story done by Thunderbolt creator Pete Morisi in the late 80's. Co-writers Steve Darnall and Alex Ross did a good job of mining the dozen or so issues of the original series for ideas and I liked the nods to some of Charton's other heroes. Visually I didn't really care for the Thunderbolt costume redesign. The original costume would definitely not play well in today's market but this one just seemed too heavy and constricting for a character who's supposed to be the peak of human potential. I also understand wanting to differentiate from the 90's revival but this look just didn't jive with me. Overall though a fun attempt to bring Peter Cannon into the 21st century.

Muy interesante actualización de un viejo personaje de la Charlton, que en su época destacó por incluir tempranas referencias serias al misticismo oriental en un cómic estadounidense. Sin complicarse en renovar orígenes, la premisa apunta a mostrar al héroe en un escenario contemporáneo donde el villano de turno comparte lugar con matices psicológicos y mucha introspección; inesperado en un mercado rendido al juego de bien versus mal, "Peter Cannon: Thunderball" debe ser uno de los títulos más subvalorados del último lustro.

There has always been something fascinating to me about Peter Cannon/Thunderbolt. His classic aesthetic was always cool and I've been dying for a modern retelling/viewpoint.

Though this one started a bit slow, I absolutely loved it by the end!

Я б ніколи в житті не почав читати цей комікс, якби не один цікавий випадок. В мене є друг, котрий одного разу надіслав пост в якому розповідалося про те, що персонажі ”Watchmen” Алана Мура були створені на основі персонажів видавництва ”Charlton comics”. Та і сам Мур не заперечує цього факту в післямові до ”Вартових”.


Найбільше мене зацікавив Пітер Кенон , який був прототипом Озимандіаса.
Останньою краплею, котра переповнила чашу було те, що обкладинки до кількох випусків Кенона виконав Джей Лі, котрий також був художником ”Before Watchmen/Ozymandias”.


Варто зазначити, що історія створення Пітера Кенона дуже цікава, його автор Піт Морсі свого часу працював полісменом, а потім відчув у собі талант сценариста-художника і створив власного героя .


Комікс, якому присвячений цей огляд, це ремейк, повернення до життя Пітера Кенона – супер-героя, що народився на початку 60-х років.
Власне, видавництва ”Dynamite” якраз і спеціалізується на коміксах у яких старі герої постають перед нами знову. Це і ”The Shadow” і ”Black Bat” і ”Green Hornet” і навіть ”Зорро”.

”Peter Cannon. Thunderbolt” це історія надлюдини в якій розкриваються такі серйозні питання, як колапс озброєнь, тероризм , саморозвиток і гармонія зі світом та натовпом.

Головний герой, як і Озимандіас відкрив себе світові, як борця проти дракона – істоти, яка нападає на воєнні полігони і з’являється в місцях де випробовують атомну зброю. Тобто він став знаменитістю по-неволі, опіумом для мас, месією і спасителем.

Але в першому ж номері , ми дізнаємось що Пітер сам є тим драконом. Він створив його щоб налякати людей і примусити світових лідерів укласти пакт про роззброєння.


Також він, як і Озимандіас написав книгу, котра була свого роду і інструментом для самовдосконалення і елементом відверненя зайвої уваги людей.
Свої сили Кенон отримав зі стародавніх сувоїв, які він вивчав у відлюдній тибетській обителі. Батьки Пітера були лікарями і борячись з чумою, врятували багатьох жителів тибетського храму, але самі загинули.

Він був обраний делегатом миру, але чи хотів цього герой?
Саме тут і розкривається один з найцікавіших аспектів характеру, бо він часто сумнівається в своїх силах, навіть розуміє що не любить людство, то для чого ж боротися за нього?


Разом з ним завжди знаходиться його друг – Табу. Але насправді, він це створена уявою проекція, котру розум Кенона спроектував через самотність героя.

Також з’являються багато цікавих персонажів : Адам, Тигр, Чоловік в плащі, Ахмосет.

Але найбільшим ворогом Пітера виявляються військові. Вони відчувають найбільшу ненависть до дракона і таємно вирішують знищити його за допомогою програми супер-солдат.

Це короткий переказ сюжетної лінії, а якщо ще говорити про арт, то і він на належному рівні.
Особливої уваги заслуговують обкладинки Алекса Роса , які також був співавтором сценарію і обкладинки Джея Лі, що за мотивами нагадують Озимандіаса.

Маємо досить цікавий і оригінальний сюжет, хороший арт і купу цитат Будди, котрі переплетені з думками Кенона.

Комікс читався довго, може через те, що тексту багато, а може й через свою специфічність, але все ж я зовсім не жалію за витраченим часом, всім шанувальникам дорослих коміксів рекомендую.

This was bad. Tempted to go 2 stars, but this wasn't offensively bad, just dull, dumb, forgettable, and tedious. A lifeless revival of a character who doesn't seem to have had that much going for him to begin with (Gillen's take on the character may change my mind when I move on to that!). It has that mediocre mid-2010s house style every single Dynamite comic of this era has, there's nothing all that memorable about it, not worth reading. 5/10, an F.
