Review for entire series: A fine example of how fanfic is so frequently better written and infinitely more creative than the vast majority of conventionally published fiction. Not only is this series a fantastic family and personal epic saga linking a century of global events, but it is also a superb work in both the action (war and superhero) AND the epistolry romance genres. That same level of skill is applied to the inserts: bits of journalism, fiction writing, social media posts... all of it independantly well-crafted and in themselves examples of what those things can and should be.

Please be aware if you are not in a safe headspace right now that this fic is... a lot. It's a lot of heartache and anger and then heartache all over again. dropdeaddream's talent made me feel both as numb as Steve did, floating through his hollow life, and also every bit as broken by the things that hollowed him out to begin with. There's very little direct Stucky in this, if that's what you were looking for, but what there is has a sweetness that hurts as much as the painful bits do.

Everyone who reads this has a favourite quote, usually something grand and sad and worthy of a literary prize even out of context. We can't help it - that's just what this fic is. I, though, would like to quote a throwaway moment of levity, because when I stumbled across it in context it didn't feel light or insignificant at all. What does it tell you about this fic that I felt that sobbing and flinching my way through nearly 118k words was worth it to finally see:
“Barnes, quit peacocking,” Steve says.
“Rogers, quit looking,” Bucky replies.
He grins at Steve in the reflection.

We belonged to each other begore we ever belonged to ourselves.

This was good, but I honestly didn't love it as much as the two others. I felt like for about 60% it was very slow, and the writing wasn't as poetic as the other two, only a lilttle bit by the very end. Although I like the ending it wasn't what I had in mind.

"Today I can see all the way to the truth I'll know at the end of the world. [...] I'll always come back from the dead for you. We belonged to each other before we ever belonged to ourselves."

It is actually scary how much I think about this fanfic. Sometimes I'm just minding my bussiness and a little voice in my head goes 'i won't be in the history books; that's for you. But I loved you first.' and I just wanna cry right there.

The way this fanfiction is better than so many publised books out there and the authors gave us this for FREE.
I was around 16 or 17 when I first read this series and I still can remember how much I sobbed reading all those letters. And I still sob like a baby anytime I reread them.

NEC is a piece of art.

“Here,” Bucky says, “And here. You see that?” Steve does, only barely. “This is your life line, right here. Sometimes it’s strong or bent or jagged or broken, but look at that: you have two.” And he’s right; Steve does. “And halfway down — see? Halfway down, they split right off.”

“What’s it mean?”

“Two possibilities, maybe,” Buck says, and strokes two fingers, middle and index, along both. He hums, curious. “Two ways it could go. Two ways your life might go, and then — look at this, see? They meet again. They meet again right there, at the end. So your ending’s the same, whatever it’s gonna be; however you get there. It ends the same both times. Strange. That’s strange, Rogers. I ain’t ever seen it before.”

“Steve Rogers,” Falsworth proclaims. “Freak of nature, baffling to psychics.”

“Thanks, Monty,” says Steve, very sincerely, and around them the men laugh. Steve looks across again to Bucky and finds that Bucky is already looking back at him.

“You’re a real piece of work, you know that?” Bucky teases, fond, his dark eyes glittering and happy in the light of the fire. The night is quiet and chilled, but between them their hands still touch, and where their hands touch, they are warm.

"The shape he took in my mind was something special, and beyond that he was stored in incremental pieces all throughout me anyway: my teeth missed him, and so did my kneecaps, and even my angry hands. My spine knew something was wrong, too — I swear to God it felt the absent rungs...

...Now I can tell anyone all about him; I can conjure him up straight from memory. And what a luxury it is, too — what a rich man I am — that I can think of him at all-"

The most moving and enthralling complete set of works I have read (whether published, unpublished, book form, digital form, you name it) in YEARS! I think I will cry over this till my death.

I loved this series so much. I'm not one for reading long fics let alone series but this was recommended to me and I'm glad I did. The story was so well structured and I loved recognizing all the different moments from the movies that were so carefully woven into the plot here. However, my favourite thing about this series has to be the notes. It's so crazy to see all the research that went into creating this gem & I actually learned a lot! I would easily recommend "Not easily conquered", even to those who aren't necessary Stucky/ MCU fans.

Well, this fic made me super sad but also super happy. It's really well-written and flows nicely; 11/10 will read again. Preliminary stuff aside; if you're like me and was disappointed by the cowardly ending to the Stucky film canon and wanted a fitting and generally better ending for these characters, then look no further than this amazing fic. You will not regret. Now I'm going to cry myself to sleep while I pine over my newfound unrealistic expectations of relationships✌️

this was pretty scattered and was confusing compared to the others because it was all over the place and focused on more than just steve searching for bucky and what transpires along the way.

it was weird to me that after bucky took back his life, his memories came back and he started acting like his pre-winter-soldier days when it felt like it wasn't naturally.

bucky in the end was hilarious and i enjoyed the fluff between him and steve.

ALSO THAT ENDING SCENE
