De geschiedenis van Indische Nederlanders bestrijkt vier eeuwen, vanaf de eerste koloniale vestiging tot op de huidige dag. Het is een boek over beweging en vertrek, over ras en klasse, over crisis, bezetting en revolutie. Het gaat over afscheid van geboortegrond, over ontheemding en opnieuw inburgeren. Uiteindelijk leidt het spoor naar de Indische ervaringen in Nederland en het pioniersbestaan in de Verenigde Staten en Australië. In woord en beeld komt de veelvormigheid van de Indische cultuur en de (post)koloniale wereld tot leven.
De auteurs publiceerden eerder een gelijknamige serie wetenschappelijke boeken over de Indische cultuur en de migratiegeschiedenis: De oude Indische wereld van Ulbe Bosma en Remco Raben; In Indië geworteld van Hans Meijer; en De uittocht uit Indië van Wim Willems.
De geschiedenis van Indische Nederlanders is het eindresultaat van tien jaar studie en geeft ene fascinerend inzicht in de lotgevallen van al die honderdduizenden Nederlanders die op een of andere wijze zijn verbonden met het voormalige Indië. Het beeldverhaal is samengesteld op basis van foto’s uit privéalbums. Ze geven een intiem beeld van het Indische leven in de twintigste eeuw.

Bevat veel belangrijke informatie en poogt duidelijk een zo compleet mogelijk beeld te schetsen. De indeling van het werk en daarmee de ordening van de informatie is helaas nogal verwarrend, waardoor de tekst veel in herhaling lijkt te vallen. Tegelijkertijd zorgt dit voor onoverzichtelijkheid, waardoor aan de ene kant moeizaam gaat om de tekst aan een stuk door te lezen, en aan de andere kant lastig blijkt om haar sporadisch te raadplegen voor informatie. Desalniettemin een een belangrijk en inzichtgevend boek.

pada hemat saya, buku ini adalah suatu usaha untuk memaparkan riwayat suatu ide. riwayat suatu gagasan yang bernama 'indisch'.
bahan yang digunakan tidak terlalu asing bagi saya, tapi caranya mendekati fakta hibriditas di tanah jajahan ini menarik. hibriditas, creolization atau apa pun istilah yang dipakai, dalam buku ini hendak ditetapkan awal dan akhir pemunculan serta pemekarannya.

penulis menggunakan rentang waktu [1500-1920:] yang dipakai untuk menegaskan fakta sebelum makin membanjirnya orang eropa ke tanah jajahan. yakni rentang waktu ketika jalur transportasi antara belanda dan hindia belum mulus, sehingga gejala hibriditas berlangsung rame-ramenya. seperti kita tahu, rentang waktu sesudahnya adalah masa ketika infrastruktur kota di tanah jajahan sudah 'baik' menurut ukuran eropa, banyak orang eropa yang melakukan migrasi ke tanah jajahan sehingga ada di sana kelompok-kelompok orang eropa yang 'murni', tidak tercampur dengan pribumi. buku ini mengulas periode sebelum itu.
lebih dari sekadar membicarakan masalah perbauran etnik, buku ini juga membicarakan konsekuensi2 penegasan identitas itu kedalam hunian, kota, pekerjaan, konflik-konflik kelas dll.
sebagai pembuka, buku mengulas konsep klasifikasi 'separation and fusion' yang kemudian diturunkan ke bab-bab beriktu tentang rasisme, perbudakan, konversi ke kristen, jaringan para pedagang pribumi dan asing, kapitalisme perkebunan, rekruitmen pribumi menjadi tentara VOC, pendidikan dan diskriminasinya, koran dan penerbitan serta munculnya kesadaran nationalisme...buku ini menutup dengan bab mengenai 'indische: defined and identified".

babak yang bagus itu (didirikannya masyarakat baru yang TIDAK berbasis etnisitas)harus berakhir ketika semakin banyak orang eropa membanjir, semakin banyak gaya hidup yang kebelanda-belandaan, makin banyak bahasa belanda dipakai, moda transportasi mobil dan sepeda meninggalkan kereta binatang, 'rijstafel' digantikan berbagai jenis masakan eropa, sarung dan kebaya tidak lagi digunakan nyonya2 belanda, maka proses hibridization itu digantikan oleh 'dutchification' yang menegaskan pemisahan antara belanda dan pribumi. organisasi2 yang bersifat etnisitas pun muncul... suatu perkembangan baru yang merupakan kemunduran?

This book was simply a histographical masterpiece. Along with The Social Order of Batavia, you feel like you are walking in colonial Indonesia society. I used both books as a couplet for research and Bosma and Raben do excellent work.

What made this book so great is that it looked at the European, Asian, and Indigenous eyes and the scopes and statistics are just superb. It explains why there is no Dutch legacy in this lost colony and that is because the Asians trampled everything and preserved their culture as the Chinese and others swallowed them up even though they were there for such a long time.

This book is a crown jewel of social science and I wish could read the original Malay, Indonesian, and Dutch versions of this book. I may translate this into French as my other social scientist buddies would eat this book like a cherry drop. Truly a joy to read and I learned so much! The Dutch Empire is so cool and I will never forget the diverse cultures and the VOC coins that turned an archipelago into a great nation on Earth.
