Another deception trope, another Hero who has fallen in love with the face of an angel in a painting. Happily, heroine resembles his obsession.
The heroine and her step mothet are quite poor. So they plot for the beautiful step mother to marry the Duke. I liked how they loved and looked out for each other. This one was not an evil step mother, they truly cared for each other.
Since they are too poor to afford a lady’s maid, the heroine goes as her step-mother’s maid.
However, it is the heroine who arouses the interest of the Duke because of her interest in art and painting. The Duke is an art connoisseur himself and is intrigued by the heroine plus attracted to her due to her resemblance to the angel in his favorite painting.
There is some intrigue because a painting that the Duke owns has been switched out with a fake and the heroine discovers it. Instead of informing the Duke she decides to investigate the suspects room. She finds it and almost gets herself killed in the process.
Luckily the Duke saves her. The step mother has also fallen in love with another guest, an Italian count. So happily she is to marry him. They leave for Italy w the heroine where the Duke will join them and “meet” her as the daughter of the bride.
So alls well ends well and no one finds out she was the lady’s maid to her step mom. ❤️
A fun, light cozy read with a few anxious moments as our smart, brave heroine work hard at outsmarting the antagonist and saving the day for herself and her loved ones. I love the fact that the heroine did not sit around waiting for a chance to be rescued. The story was also set outside of England giving the reader a new beautiful area to explore.
I loved the book — it was well written, though I found the storyline a bit dragged at times. As I kept reading, I wondered where “Look, Listen, and Love” played a role in the story. I later discovered it all connected to the Duke.
The Duke first looked at the portrait that resembled Tempera when he was nine and fell in love with it. When he finally met Tempera, he listened to her, and in the end, he truly loved her — hence the theme “Look, Listen, and Love.”
The same applies to Tempera, though her journey was more centered around art. She had to look at the Duke’s art collection, listen to what the portraits were telling her, and eventually fall in love with them — so much so that she made it her mission to save the stolen portraits. In the end, she realized she did it all for the Duke. Personally, I don’t think there was any real need for her to go that far.
I also loved the relationship Tempera had with her stepmother — it was beautiful. I’m happy that she, too, found love in the end.
Kinda boring, a whole lot of nothing. I just wanted to know if I'm over my Harlequin romance era, and I proved it beyond a doubt. The entire time I was reading I wanted it to finish lol. The mc was so dumb.
