It's an Old New England custom to delight in the fine old institution which is New England itself. From Maine through Connecticut, New England continues its adulation of New England weather, haunted houses, strange gods, longetivity, churchyard literature, and New England's gift to all the states of the Union - turkey and cranberry sauce. But although it is difficult to admit that some of the good things in life have passed, we can still hark back with Mr. Mitchell to the glorious days of pie for breakfast, giant cheese, bundling, and the glorious world of as we were.
A fun book with lots of great history and anecdotes mainly from the 1600s-1800s from all over New England. Stories such as a full church knocked off its foundation and which ended up floating down river intact, how different towns got their names, and the giant cheese made in Western MA that was presented to President Jefferson. Fun stuff that they didn't teach in history class but should have!
I bought this for my Cthulhu Mythos/Lovecraft shelf solely because it has a chapter called "To Thirst After Strange Gods." Sadly, no mention of Innsmouth or Dunwich.
